Thirteen Years and Counting Volume XV Issue 9

Good evening. Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedomcame under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The vic-tims were in airplanes, or in their offices; secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers; moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Thou-sands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror.

The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures col-lapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a quiet, unyieldinganger. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation intochaos and retreat. But they have failed; our country is strong.

A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorist attackscan shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shat-tered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.

America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And noone will keep that light from shining.

Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature. And we responded with the best of America -- with the dar-ing of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way theycould.

Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is power-ful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C. to help with local res-cue efforts.

Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens athome and around the world from further attacks.

The functions of our government continue without interruption. Federal agencies in Washington which had to be evacu-ated today are reopening for essential personnel tonight, and will be open for business tomorrow. Our financial institu-tions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business, as well.

The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts. I've directed the full resources of our intelligence andlaw enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction be-tween the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.

I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And onbehalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assis-tance.

America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world, and we stand togetherto win the war against terrorism. Tonight, I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worldshave been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comfortedby a power greater than any of us, spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: "Even though I walk through the valley of theshadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me."

This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stooddown enemies before, and we will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this day. Yet, we go forward to defendfreedom and all that is good and just in our world.

Thank you. Good night, and God bless America.George Bush, presidential address, 9/11/01

Essay on Listening

It was a struggle to decide on whatI wanted to write about this month, but I have decided to write aboutlistening. And with most everythingthat I write, there is much irony andrhetoric.

Let us begin this discourse withWebster’s second definition of theword listen: to hear something withthoughtful attention; to give consid-eration. The word listen is derivedfrom the word hear, and this is im-portant. The words listen and hearare dependent on each other andcan not exist without each other. So when someone says there is adifference between hearing andlistening, they are wrong. There aredifferent types of listening, but youare either listening or you are not. There is a difference though be-tween speaking and listening. Justbecause someone is not speaking, does not mean they are listening. But if someone is always speaking, the opportunities to listen are muchless then those who choose not tospeak.

Listening is not easy. The famousAmerican poet, Oliver WendellHolmes said this, “It is the province[function] of knowledge to speak, and it is the privilege of wisdom tolisten.” Listening requires a level ofcaring, vulnerability, selflessnessand empathy that most people areeither not aware of or comfortablewith and encompasses more thenhearing words. It is also about un-derstanding and interpreting thephysical cues of the person speak-ing (or not), which are the manifes-tation of people’s emotions- theintent behind the words and thereaction to the words.

Listening is not simple. I am not writ-

ing about this subjectbecause I am a “good”listener, but rather that Ihave no excuse for notbeing a “good” listenerwhich is a far worsecrime. To purposefullyand arrogantly dismissothers by not listeningreveals greater charac-ter flaws in Jessica Garcia then justplain ignorance. So, let me nowpose the question to you: How welldo you listen? How you answer thequestion will reveal much aboutyour personality, beliefs, values andperception of yourself, others andthe world you live in.

Listening is important. Actually, it isone of the most important thingsyou can do in your life, and it hasan impact on every relationshipthat you have whether social, pro-fessional, or personal. As hard as itis to learn how to listen, it will saveyou years of struggle, disappoint-ment and heartache. That at itsleast is worth the effort to try.

Do what you will with this essay, butrealize when someone is speakingabout the power and importanceof listening; there is purpose andmeaning behind the words. All youhave to do is listen. Whether or notthe speaker actually understands, believes and practices what theyare saying is a whole other topic foranother essay on bullshit.

Remember... and never forget.

T.E.A.M. Security is honored to be a part of the Healing Fields 2007 in Tempe Beach Park.

The finished sight is amazing to behold, and to know that you were a part of the creation andconstruction of a living memorial to immortalize the events of 9/11/01 is very powerful.

If you would like to volunteer to be involved in this project, please contact Elizabeth or Taz inthe office, or there is a volunteer signup sheet at the reception desk and in scheduling.

There are several different shifts; Early FRIDAY morning, all of the Beach Park gets griddedand marked. FRIDAY afternoon, all the flags are picked up and prepped. Early SATURDAYmorning, we go to the park and pound the rebar that holds the flags upright. Then all the flagsare placed and unfurled. The following WEDNESDAY, we form a crew to go and carefully

dismantle the memorial.

Please give a few hours of your time to remember those who lost their lives on 09/11/01.

We now havetroops who are making it betterand still not really understandingwhat they are to do. I have friendsthat are over there; I have friendsthat were in the pentagon. I stillhave friends who are leaving to goover and fight. I am forever knownas the birthday that was a deeptragedy. YES! I am a 9-11 baby. Iwas turning 31 when this hap-pened. I use to hate it, but nowwhen I have to give my birth dateout I say yep, and now you re-member and instead of looking atit as a bad, bad day. I look at it as“you now remember.” I hope thateach time I have to say my birth-day it stops one or more personsand makes them think what hap-pen and have them rememberthat we are still over their fightingand we are still losing troops eachday they are over their. I watchedthe news today and it said that wehave lost 4,000 troops, and I amsure that is a guess and not an ac-curate count. We lost 3097 in theplain going into the towers and inthe pentagon and in the Pennsyl-vania field. Page 7 POST ORDERSback...we are not the first to thinkthis way. I’m sure there were peo-ple thinking these very thoughts inDecember of 1947. Do you re-member? December 7th, 1941.The “day which will live in in-famy”. No doubt our Parents andGrandparents were thinking thesame thing about that tragicevent. Truth of the matter is, 3generations later, do we reallyunderstand the importance ofthat day or feel it’s effects in ourday to day life?

“Never Forget”. I am ahuge advocate of this thought.December 7th, 1941, November22nd, 1963, January 25th, 1986,and September 11th, 2001 are justa few days in our recent historywhen this country suffered agreat tragedy. More important tomere remembrance of theseevents, are the lessons learned.“The best prophet of the future isthe past”. If we do not learn fromour past we will be doomed torepeat it. There are many thingsthat have come from theseevents. Yes some bad things(don’t want to mention anynames, but their initials are TSA),but a lot of good things too.

I guess in all of my ram-blings, what I am really trying tosay is; Yes, this is a time of remem-brance for those who lost theirlives on that fateful day, but let’snot forget to celebrate the living.

Show those who may be watchingus from beyond, that from their sac-rifices have lead to positivechanges in the ways we live ourlives.

I hope that you all have theopportunity to enjoy your Labor dayweekend with your friends andfamilies. Don’t forget, the AutumnalEquinox on the 23rd. don’t blink, you might miss Fall.

Ya’ll take care, we’ll seeyou out there.

Greetings everybody:So....I have been trying to

think of what to write for thismonths newsletter. With it beingthe 6 anniversary of the Septem-ber 11, 2001 tragedy I wanted thetopic to be something poignantand appropriate for the time. Butwhat can I write about that is notalready overdone and at thesame time interesting to share withyou all....Then today Clear broughtup something quite profound. While trying to come up with ideasfor the cover of this month’s news-letter she wanted to include somethings that were not related to thetragedy but found herself at a lossfor any thoughts. That’s when it hitme. The events of 9-11 have com-pletely overshadowed the memo-ries of what Septembers past. Tosteal her statement (and adjustingit to make it my own) I’ve had 26Septembers before 2001 and all Ican think of when I think of Sep-tember is 9-11-2001. It saddens meto think that children who were tooyoung to remember and thosethat have been born since will as-sociate this month with that greattragedy.

However, then I think

There are times in our lives, if welook around us, children can re-mind us of the simplicity of life. Alwe need to do is acknowledgethem and just watch.

Last week, I took my children to arestaurant. My six-year-old son asked if hecould say grace. As we bowed our heads he said,"God is good, God is great.Thank you for the food, and Iwould even thank you moreif Mom gets us ice cream for des-sert.And Liberty and justice for all!Amen!"

Along with the laughter from theother customers nearby,I heard a woman remark,"That's what's wrong with this coun-try.Kids today don't even know how

to pray.Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!"

Hearing this, my son burst into tearsand asked me,"Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?"

As I held him and assured him thathe had done a terrificjob, and God was certainly notmad at him, an elderlygentleman approached the table. He winked at my son and said,"I happen to know that Godthought that was a great prayer.""Really?" my son asked."Cross my heart," the man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, headded(indicating the woman whose re-mark had started this whole thing),"Too badshe never asks God for ice cream.A little ice cream is good for thesoul sometimes."

Naturally, I bought my kids icecream at the end of the meal.My son stared at his for a moment, and then did somethingI will remember the rest of my life.

He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in frontof the woman. With a big smile he told her,"Here, this is for you.Ice cream is good for the soulsometimes;and my soul is good already."

Sometimes, we all need some icecream.I hope God sends you some IceCream today!A smile says a lot…….smile atsomeone todayBe safe out there….TAZ

Hello everyone out there in TEAMland. I'd like to apologize to you allfor missing the deadline for lastmonths news letter. Just like myhomework in school, I waited untilthe last minute and then ran out oftime.

There is a saying that "behind everygood man is a woman". Well I'd likeall of you to know that behindTEAM's warehouse is an incrediblelogistics team. Vinnie, Craig andDevon have been working theirbutts off making "things happen".You sometimes see them at eventsand in the office for brief moments, but don't let that fool you, they putin a ton of hours. They have beenworking long days, long nights andmany long weekends to keep all ofyou communicating, in clean uni-forms, and trying to supply you witheverything that you might need towork your next shift. Funny how this prayer stands trueover 100 years later.

There will always be outsiders thattry to take the freedom that Amer-ica allows us. I just wanted to takethis moment to reflect on how veryproud I am to be an American andto Thank all of the military personnelthat fight to keep America the landof the Free!

Responsible. “Response-able”. Ashuman beings we have the intelli-gence to make decisions and re-spond to certain situations, separat-ing us from more stimulus-basedcreatures, such as animals. When

we are presented with a situationwe have the ability to make eithera decision that will positively affectour lives, or one that will have anegative impact. As schedulers,Carolyn and I have the ability togive our field employees part-timeor full-time hours and we absolutelylove giving lots of hours to responsi-ble employees that will remembertheir schedule, show up for theirshifts, and make the right decisions. The reason I bring the subject ofresponsibility up is because wehave employees that will acceptshifts and either forget, cancel atthe last minute, or not even showup. If you accept a shift, please besure to write it down and make sureto keep it somewhere where youwill see it daily to help you remem-ber. Some of our employees need

40 hours a week, so when you ac-cept a shift and don’t show up,those are hours that someone elsecould have worked. In addition,we have to call someone that’s al-ready planned their day to come inspur of the moment to cover yourshift. This is a job and we expect all ofyou to be at your post 15 minutesprior to your given call time. If youare unsure of your schedule or yourcall time, take a few extra minutesout of your day to call us at the of-fice. We’ll be happy to remind you. Also, if something comes up, pleasecall the pager or the office duringbusiness hours ahead of time to letus know. This gives us time to findsomeone to cover your shift, andalso gives that employee notice sothey can plan for it.I’ve really enjoyed getting to knowall of you and hope my relationshipwith each and every one of youcan continue to grow. Carolynand I appreciate the hard work youdo for us and for those of you thatexude the professionalism and su-perb customer service that makesT.E.A.M. such a great company.

Page 11 FINAL THOUGHTSWe live in a world where there ismuch hate directed at us, by peo-ple who hate with religious feverand irrational anger. They hate usbecause our women have equality, and are not treated like posses-sions. They hate us because ourparents worked hard to have agood life. They hate us because wehave rights and freedoms, enjoy abeer or a shot of bourbon, likepretty women, realize that there is adifference between women andcamels, and the list goes on. Theyhate us simply because we are notlike them. A war based on religion isthe most dangerous of all. This willnot end soon. You ever look at thehate and distain they have for us.Remember that when you remem-ber 9/11. Remember that it canhappen again, and if they havetheir way, it will. 9/11 was a wakeup call for all of us, but we are go-ing back to sleep.

Easy to do, when you deal with id-iot like the TSA, that have nothingbetter to do than come up with theprohibited item of the week – Light-ers no, matches ok. Lighters yes, butbaby food no. Matches still ok, butshoes no. Put your liquid items in thespecial TSA bags, and suddenlythey are no longer a threat. I guessnone of the morons got the memothat monkeys were on the no list aweek ago, because a monkey sit-ting on top of a passengers hat, under a hat, made it not on oneflight, but two. The passenger evenwent though a magnetometer andthey did not catch on. The admini-stration stated repeatedly that Weneed to be right 100% of the time, and the terrorists need to be rightonly once. Did anyone explain thisto the TSA Brain trust? I think theymay have gotten it backwards. Theday someone can explain to mewhy it is ok to harass old frail peoplein wheelchairs, but to actually set apolicy that one cannot profileagainst Arabs and not do “specialscreening” on more than three ap-

I remember certain dates of my lifethat mean much to all of us. I re-member where I was when welanded on the moon, where I waswhen Elvis died, when John Lennondied, when Princess Di died, whenwe lost Challenger and Columbia, and I will never forget where I waswhen 9/11 began to unfold. Thereare certain aspects of this that areetched into memory. I rememberthat it was a Tuesday, and we weresupposed to have a staff meeting. We still were in our offices on Broad-way and Priest. My mom was visit-ing, and I woke up to her scream-ing for me to turn on the TV. I was abit disoriented, as I watched thefirst tower on fire, and the Pentagonburning. I watched the secondplane hit the towers, I watchedpeople jumping from those towers. Those images will never leave me. Iwatched the towers fall It was allsurreal. I remember the confusion ofhow many planes were missing, and what was going on. The rumorsof the military shooting downplanes, and the realization of themagnitude of what had hap-pened. I will never forget how quietthe skies were for several nights af-ter that, with no planes up there. Many people call 9/11 the PearlHarbor of our lifetime. There is a lotof parallel, and I think it is importantnot only to never forget what hap-pened and the enormous lose oflife, but also why it happened. Weneed to remember how we cametogether as a nation, how everyhouse, apartment and car had anAmerican flag waving from it, howwe treated each other with a littlemore kindness, spoke a little quieterand were just a bit more polite.

We have to remember that it wasan attack on the United States, onour way of life. Since that day, thousands more have given theirlife to defend our way of life. We

are in the midst of a war, a warthat is fundamentally a much big-ger issue that Iraq or PresidentBush. This was a war that was in-evitable, and similar to us enter-ing the war in Europe and Asiaafter the attack on Pearl Harbor,we again were taking at attitudeon “not our problem” until theday we were attacked. Fewevents in our life truly are impor-tant, and if you know anything

fromhistory,youknowwe mustlearnfrom it.The les-sons of9/11 arebeingwrittenas wego

about our lives. PLEASE, don’tever forget all the people, thefamilies who’s lives were changedforever one early Tuesday morn-ing. People who kissed their lovedones good-bye, not knowing itwould be a final farewell. Travel-ers and business people who goton routine plane flights, and ex-periencing final moments thatnone of us can imagine. Sincethen, never forget all the soldierswho went off to serve their coun-try, to return in flagged drapedcoffins, leaving behind parents, siblings, wives and husbands, fian-cées and children. It is a neverending pain for those left behind.A pain that most carry with prideand honor for a patriotic life givento defend our way of life. As yougo about living that way of life, give thanks and appreciation forthe sacrifices other have to livewith each and every day. Forthem, they live 9/11 and the daysthat followed each and everyday. We can not ever forget.

Page 12 FINAL THOUGHTSparent Arabs per flight due to dis-crimination concerns, then I mightchange my opinion on the TSA. Inthe meantime, I am going to con-cern myself with their keystone coptactics, as guess what – The Arabsare not discriminating against us –they want to kill ALL of us! The Dan-ish offended their God by printing acartoon of their cartoon, I meanGod. They have no idea how theyoffend me with their hatred. Re-member that on 9/11. That is theother image I will never forget from9/11 – The sadness of peoplearound the world, how the wholeworld embraced the United States, and showed their love, their supportand their Sorry – From Germany,Italy, Japan, Russia, Brazil, and amillion places you would neverthink, but I also remember thecheering in the streets of Palestine,Iraq, Syria, Jemen and Afghanistan.Remember that on 9/11, and re-member it always. Hatred is not thesolution, but neither is tolerance ofhatred. Be safe, keep the Peaceand see you out there. It’s gonnaget busy…

Steel salvaged from the World Trade Center wreckage will be used in the con-struction of the USS New York. The shipyard and Navy inspected the steel andfound that it was of sufficient material strength so that it could be incorporatedinto the bow stem of New York.

"We're very proud that the twisted steel from the WTC towers will soon beused to forge an even strong national defense," said New York Gov. GeorgePataki. "The USS New York will soon be defending freedom and combatingterrorism around the globe, while also ensuring that the world never forgets theevil attacks of September 11, 2001 and the courage and strength New Yorkersshowed in response to terror."

USS New York is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missionsthat include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360sailors and 700 combat-Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

"It would be fitting if the first mission this ship would go on is to make surethat bin Laden is taken out, his terrorist organization is taken out," said GlennClement, a paint foreman. "He came in through the back door and knocked ourtowers down and (the New York) is coming right through the front door, andwe want them to know that."

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite,La., to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept.9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalledNavy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment foreverybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade centersteel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stoodup."

"It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. Theycan't keep us down. We're going to be back."
