Leadership Philosophy

Ultimately, what differentiates Team Concepts’ approach to teaching leadership is our desire to help our clients become team builders. Not only do our programs bond participants and engage them in an active process of practicing leadership, but our Eight Secrets of Inspirational Leadership teach participants precisely how to create high- performance teams themselves among the people they lead.

The Eight Secrets of Inspirational Leadership are designed to develop team building and leadership skills necessary to effectively lead your organization. They are a philosophy used to educate participants on specific elements of coaching, high - performance teams, and inspirational leadership, while at the same time building camaraderie, trust, and team unity.

The eight secrets are divided into three categories. The first two secrets describe fundamental rules of human nature in the context of teams and organizations:

Secret 1: Everyone Wants To Be Part of Something Bigger Than Themselves –

Recognize the commonality in the human experience and its ability to bring people together.

Secret 2: Everyone Wants to Feel Valued – Take care of your people with sincerity and authenticity.

The next five secrets combine to create an action plan for creating a high- performance team:

Secret 3: Define the Performance Objective – Clearly articulate specific objectives which are both challenging and achievable.

Secret 4: Ennoble the Effort – Highlight the intrinsic value of the team in its historical and organizational framework.

Secret 5: Empower Individuals Within Team Synergy – Make each team member feel exceptional while providing the resources for their accomplishment to support team objectives.

Secret 6: Foster Personal Responsibility – Challenge each team member to make a personal commitment to be the best they can be.

Secret 7: Celebrate the Journey – Recognize and reward the efforts of your team so that you win every day.

The last secret is the common driver, a characteristic that all members of the team must possess in order to accomplish the prior secrets.

Secret 8: Maintain Positive Engaged Energy – Demonstrate passion and a positive attitude that will inspire others.

Programs

Team Concepts’ programs include a mixture of academic discovery, challenge, and inspiration that provide each participant the tools required for effective leadership while allowing them to test these new skills in an unfamiliar environment.

Our programs engage each team on what it means to be part of a high- performance team, the role and responsibility of each team member, and what is required of an inspiring leader. The concepts learned in seminar are tested in an experiential challenge that involves competition between teams. The following experiential challenges represent Team Concepts most popular programs:

TEAM CHAMPION – ROWING

Team Champion is our rowing program in which all participants – grouped into teams between 5 and 8 – will learn the fundamentals of rowing with the help of experienced elite level rowers and coaches. Each team will be placed in a rowing shell and will be educated on the mechanics of the boat and trained on how to row an eight-person boat efficiently and gracefully. As the day progresses, and tactile feedback is used to improve the individual rowers’ skills, focus and

attention will then be shifted toward working together as a team. The day concludes with a 500-meter race between all boats and medals will be given out accordingly.

Team Champion highlights all the major components of inspirational leadership, but the rowing metaphor is particularly useful in assessing team dynamics, achieving flow and balance, and learning to modulate oneself in the context of a greater organization. Rowing well demands not that participants pull hard, but that they pull together. This lesson—which translates well to many business situations—becomes tangible in the boat. Participants learn that locking into the team objective, rather than their individual agendas, ultimately makes the job easier for everyone including themselves.

TEAM HOLLYWOOD

Team Hollywood is a creative yet highly challenging program in which participants are broken up into small groups of 5 – 7 and are required to make short films based around the core values, objectives, and goals of their company. These core values are personified by selecting a movie theme from a collection of popular classic and modern movies. Once a movie is selected, each team is provided a camera, props, soundtracks, and a coach that will help them with the logistical issues involved in the making of the film. Participants will experience the challenge and

reward of working within their teams as they go from story-boarding to a finished product of a 5 – 7 minute edited film. The end of the day is reserved for the viewing of these films and finally voting for best film, and best actor/actress, with awards given out accordingly. Team Hollywood focuses primarily on Secret 4, Ennoble the Effort. The filmmaking process serves as a metaphor for creating a compelling vision of the future. Effective leaders leverage hope and inspiration in ways that motivate their employees to greatness, much in the same way great filmmakers instill awe with their storytelling. This program places a specific emphasis on building the leader’s storytelling toolkit and in how to help others see the future in a way that brings out the best in them. In addition the standard 8 Secrets curriculum, Team Hollywood can also serve as an engaging experiential element of an appreciative inquiry.

TEAM ENERGY:

Team Energy is an exciting, fast-paced, high energy “Festival Games” experience that involves a series of timed challenges. The purpose of the challenges is to demonstrate the effect of competition on the team. Competition is also a model for observing the dynamics of team member interaction. It demonstrates the effect on individual and group personality traits, communication skills, goal setting, and conflict resolution.

Team Energy is a highly diverse set of academic challenges throughout the day tailored to be less active but every bit as experiential as our other programs. Participants will be divided into dynamic groups to complete difficult objectives that will encourage each member to display their leadership qualities while at the same time embracing those of their teammates’. Unique to Team Energy is its ability to accommodate hundreds of participants in a variety of locations, and keep them all actively engaged at the same time. While being less physically demanding, Team Energy is a high paced energetic atmosphere that requires motivation and dialogue between team members throughout the day.

Team Energy includes activities designed to highlight each of the 8 Secrets. From Tower Build—in which participants learn the importance staying focused on the performance objective—to Castaways—in which team members facing fictional injuries need to be valued in order to keep the team unified, the keys to high- performance teamwork are made evident through a range of challenges. Individuals grow their inspirational leadership skill sets in the context of aligning, motivating, and celebrating a team.

TEAM SAILING:

Our sailing program is a unique blend of individual and collective competencies used to teach participants the advantages of leveraging expertise and identifying strengths for the ultimate success of the high-performing team. During this program clients will learn the individual responsibilities and skills necessary to navigate smaller sailing vessels and then, by day’s end, be given the opportunity to transfer those skills to

the collective group as they work together to navigate a larger keel boat in open water - tacking and jibing in an America’s Cup style racing event. A full day program will consist of two sessions on the water. During the morning session, participants will be divided up into smaller sub groups of two or three and taught by an experienced sailor, the skills and nuances of handling a 12-foot dingy. Skills will include tacking, jibing, working the jib and main sheets, operating the tiller, weight management, and the different points of sail. These small groups will be responsible for working together as a crew to efficiently maneuver the boat and optimize its speed. The lunch hour will consist of debriefing this experience and making the connections to the work environment. How did you leverage your expertise? How did you rely on others to compliment your strengths and weaknesses? How did participants respond when presented with the challenges and diversity that a new skill demands of you? Ultimately, what were the leadership and high-performance lessons being learned and executed on the water? The afternoon session makes a transition to the collective competency as every two small groups are combined to form a larger crew that must now operate a 20-30 foot keel boat. Using the skills they all learned that morning, participants must quickly realign as a new high-performing team in the context of a new challenge. With the help of experienced sailors on deck, each keel boat will get a chance to integrate their new skills with a new crew before racing each other in a pre-designated open water course designed to test the leadership and teamwork of the new sailors. The day concludes with a debrief of the second session along with a medals ceremony from the race results. Optional dinner at the Yacht Club is also available.

Overall, the day consists of blending the experiential with the academic to make sure that the lessons are being experienced, learned, but most importantly retained, for a leadership and team-building session that can be integrated into the working environment for lasting change. We recommend this program for group sizes of 5-50. TEAM GOLF:

In a High Performance environment Team flow, synchronicity and singular focus are the ideal. Invariably obstacles to this flow can manifest themselves in miscommunication, competing agendas or silo-thinking producing anxiety, fear and tension. The Team Concepts Team Golf experience is an exploration of High Performance Teamwork through the sport of Golf. Previous golf experience is not necessary and, in fact, the novice golfer

makes a significant contribution to the team’s learning and growth.

In Team concepts unique Team Golf experience the individual will understand how his/her approach, technique and attitude contribute to the success of his/her swing and the success of the team in “Swinging Through To High Performance Teamwork”. Teams will examine first hand their personal technique and how it impacts the Team. As individuals perfect their swing Teams will see how each aspect of technique contribute to the goal.

After Teams are formed (by counting off randomly) Dan Lyons will introduce the Team Concepts Inspirational Leadership Philosophy and Teams will establish their goals for the day. Professional Golf Master Teacher, Grant Griffiths will lead your Group in an introduction to Golf fundamentals and etiquette. The entire group will perform a 1⁄2 round of Golf in the first part of the day. Team Members technique will be shot on video and coaches will take notes as they play through their first round. The individual ego will channeled toward the collective ego as our Team of Golf Professionals examine individual style and technique. The 2nd part of the day combines classroom discussion about the experience and culminates with a Gold competition in the afternoon.

Client Testimonials I find the Eight Secrets to be so powerful in their truth and simplicity that I carry a copy of them with me wherever I go. Team Concepts has helped transform the culture of Vanguard over the past three years. Bill McNabb CEO, Vanguard I highly recommend this leadership philosophy to anyone who desires success at the highest level, whether you are a recent graduate just beginning your career, or a seasoned executive. Brian Edgar SVP, Tommy Hilfiger, Canada The Team Concepts’ “Leading Teams for Growth & Change” was the best adult Executive Education program I’ve ever participated in. Mark Rossi Director, Northrop Grumman I want to thank-you for the great job you and your staff did for our sales team with your wonderful program on the “Eight Secrets of Inspirational Leadership.” The unique nature of the day was highlighted by the intense, but fun, competitive exercises, motivational talks, and the breakout sessions that allowed everyone in the group the opportunity to learn and apply the lessons of the course to our challenging work environment. Your Olympic experiences and video presentations were outstanding! It helped everyone see their possibilities and gave all the determination to succeed. Our entire staff came back to work refreshed, motivated, and with easily applied and long lasting lessons for the future. I couldn’t be happier. The entire department is working toward achieving our second quarter goals so we can work with you again on a “rowing” team-building event. Judith O’Flynn Kayser Ritz Carlton I thought it was not only a great experience, but a valuable lesson in true team participation. It was very obvious that all oars needed to be in the water a the same time in order for the boat to go smoothly forward. Any variation would cause the boat to do strange things. The same thing is true with a business team. Failure to execute results in a lost sale, an unhappy client and a loss of revenue. It was the most appropriate team training exercise t that I have ever been through. M. Holan SEI
