    In the recent years society as a whole as become more aware of the environementaland conservations. There are PSAs commercials and advertisements that talk about theimportance of conservation and sustainability. With this recent healthy trend, many differentcompanies are using marketing efforts as well as the concept of sustainability, to make theirproduct more effective and more marketable. In this document you fill find informationregarding the University of South Floridas steps to make imporvements within the campus tosupport this cause.

    Within the documentsustainability will be explainedand defined. The importance ofsustainability and how toimplement it into everydayliving will be addressed. Thisinformative document alsocontain expert opinions from theheads of differentdepartments within theUniversity.

    Our paper has provided agreat amount of detailregarding the University ofSouth Florida's continuousefforts towards becoming a "Green University". Included are various campus initiativespertaining to sustainability such as maintaining a designed environment, academics,transportation, energy conservation, recycling, and waste reduction.

    Evaluating USF's efforts against other campuses raises awareness about ongoingpractices that have helped to establish an acceptable standard for sustainable universities. Inthis comparison, are Arizona State University and University of California- Los Angeles, bothcharter participants, along with USF, of the AASHE Sustainability Tracking, Assessment &Rating System. Finally, two interviews with Dr. Elizabeth Kaplon, of the academic initiativesstaff, and Dr. Christian Wells, founding director of the USF Office of Sustainability, providefeedback on what to expect from the universities' upcoming projects.

    researches project on

    converting commonorganic material to jetfuel. The team wasnamed semi-finalist withthe Global VentureChallenge 2010. Thestudents and facultyreceived a Phase IIgrant from the EPAsPeople, Prosperity andPlanet Competition.Even the USF Physical

    Plant has developednew methods to reducewater usage which hasresulted in 30-40percent less water usecompared to traditionalmethods.

    Sustainability is a majorcontroversial topic todayacross the world. Since thelate 20th century, the idea ofsustainability has increasedacrss the globe. People oftoday are starting to realizehow quickly ournonrenewable resources arebeing depleted. The fearassociated with the creationgof these sustainability effortsis that the people of the nextgeneration will not be able tolive, because the people ofthis generation are depletingall of the resources, and theyhave not created apermanent change forrenewable resources that areeco-friendly and actually helpour environment more than

    1) Over the course of time, what major accomplishments has USF made with efforts towardsgoing green?

    USF has worked on our carbon footprint, we have been evaluated by national standards boards and

    our Green Report Card has risen from a D to B+- A- range. The USF President has also signed theGreen Climate Commitment.

    2) What role can students or faculty play in sustainable efforts? What programs, groups, orclubs would you recommend?

    Everyone can recycle. Everyone can pick some type of sustainability cause. Students can now beinvolved in green causes through Student Government or the several student organizations such asStudents for Environmental Action (SEA). There are many others please look at the Office ofSustainability website. Faculty across the university are very motivated especially in the Colleges ofEngineering, Business and departments like Geography and Environmental Sciences.

    3) How do you feel you have impacted USFs Sustainability Committee?

    I have been instrumental in getting Housing & Residential Education to start green initiatives. Since Ihave been involved we have started a Green Living Learning Community. We have started recycling the residence halls; we have participated in Recylomania and ConservaBull.

    4) How has the ConservaBull initiative reduced energy consumption within residence hallsacross campus?

    We only have data during the initiative but in two years of doing the program there was up to a 39%decrease in energy consumption in some selected halls. Because of the power infrastructure in theresidence halls many halls do not get separate readings thus cannot be calculated individually. It is tobad that we cannot get all halls to compete but from the facilities side, it is not possible. However theprogram has an effect in energy consumption and more importantly it has an educational effect on allresidents for their future.

    5) What advice would you give to students concerned about making USF more environmentallyfriendly?

    If you live in the halls, make use of our 5 recycling bins in strategic locations in res hall areas. Be sureand use a power strip and turn off your computer on a regular basis when not in use. Use yourreusable bag that will be given to you during move. For the first time this year if you live in ourapartments, make use of the blue recycling containers we have placed in your apartment kitchen. If

    you are really motivated check out our Green LLC and learn what ways they are helping theenvironment by composting and using less water.

    Since the University of South

    Florida opened its doors backin 1960, it has been aneternally evolving school withnew program, buildings andpropositions constantly being

    implemented.The USF Physical Plant isone of most evolving parts ofthe University regardingconservation efforts. Some ofthe programs the Physicalplants have established andendoresed are programssuch as the RecyclingProgram, the Green LightProgram, Coversion to F28

    Flourescent Lamps and soon.USF established theyrecycling program since 1994which is still continuing andexpanding. Now in manyplaces around campus thereare blue recycling cans nextto the regular trash cans.USFs recycling programscurrently recycles mixedpaper, aluminum, glass,plastic, mixed metals, yarddebris, light bulbs as well aselectronic equiptment.

    The USF Physical PlantsGreen Lights Program wasestablished and upgraded thelighting system around the

    campus with high efficient

    blubs. This program currentsaves the Universityapproximatly 1 millionAnnually. Some of the otheenergy conservation

    programs that have beenimplemented are motionsensors in tampa campusclassrooms. This programwill save a significant amounof energy by having the lightturned off when not in use.Other more technologicallyadvanced programs track thamount of energy usage inmany of the tampa buildings

    The Direct Digital ControlSystem as well as the energmonitor and metering systemWith the newest buildingsadded to the Tampa Campusuch as the Music andNatural and EnviornmentalScience Building.With the new and the olderbuildings USF has donemajor renovations to imporvthe efficiency of eachbuilding. Some of theupgrades includes increasesboiler efficiency, solar roofefficiency, replacinginefficient gas with electricoperated chillers.Water conservation effortsare also a responsibility ofUSF Physical Plant.

    students. Programs such asConservaBull, the greencredit, and the bull runnerassist students in doing so.

    The USF Bull Runneroperates typicall Monday-Thursday from 7:00 am-12:00 am Fridays 7:00am 5:30pm and Saturdays andSundays from 2:30 pm- 9:30pm. With busses looping onan average of one every 10minutes per stop USF knewthat inorder to remove theircarbon foot print that they

    would need to develop asolution to the averagecarbon admissions a typicalbus would produce.

    USFs Parking andTransportation Services usesBio-Deisel for the Bullrunners. 100% of the busesrun off of this and it isenviornmentally friendly andnaturally produced. USFsbio-deisel is composed of soy

    oil, chicken fat, palm oil, andrecycled grease trap oil. Thisacompolishment is somethingthe University if very proud ofand has been consulted by

    other Univerisities to receiveinfromation about how toimplement bio-deisel intotheir own campuses.

    ConservaBull is another morerecent edition to studentsability to contribute to goinggreen. This program allowson campus housing studentsto compete against eachotherwith each resident halls beinga team.

    According to Dr. ElizabethKaplon in two years of doingthe program there was up toa 39% decrease in energyconsumption in someselected halls. Because ofthe power infrastructure in the

    residence halls many halls donot get separate readingsthus cannot be calculatedindividually. It is too bad that

    we cannot get all halls tocompete but from thefacilities side, it is notpossible. However theprogram has an effect in

    There are a total of 14residents halls acrosscampus. The programs maengage is to raiseconsumption awarenesshowever it in return hasassisted with sustainabilityand making a goodenviornmental impacts. Thiprogram is on going for thepast couple years and theresident hall with the lowest

    energy usage wins a customt-shirt and each resident ofthe building is entered into adrawing for a new iPod.

    Recently implemented is thenew first year housing policyin which 1st year students arrequired to live on campus awell as purchase a meal plaWith all the additionalstudents as well as the allyou can eat style meal planthere is a significant increasin the amount of water towash the dishes. In hornor earth day back in 2008 USF

    decreases USFs diningservices enviornmentalfootprint by decreasing

    excessive water waste. Atotal of 400 trays have beenput away in storage for thetwo dining halls. Byrefraiming from using thesetrays an estimated 200gallons per day. Also by nothaving the trays the totalquantity of food waster by 0.6ounces per person. By nothaving a tray to carry around

    a plethora of food, studenthave reduced theirconsumption to food that theywill eat or want.

    According to Dr. ElizabethKaplan there are a multipleways that green mindedstudents who live in theresidence halls cancontribute. She says If youlive in the halls, make use of

    our 5 recycling bins instrategic locations inresidence hall areas.

    Be sure to use a power stripand turn off your computer ona regular basis when not inuse. Use your reusable bagthat will be given to youduring move. For the firsttime this year if you live in ourapartments, make use of theblue recycling containers we

    Enviornment Association,USF Emerging GreenBuilders and Engineers forSustainable World. All theseorganizations are commited

    to dedication of conservingand sustaining theenviornment. Dr. ElizabethKaplan who is the assistantDirector of AcademicInitiatives within theDepartment of Housing &Residential Education saysthat everyone can do theirpart. She says Everyone carecycle. Everyone can pick

    some type of sustainabilitycause. Students can now binvolved in green causesthrough Student Governmenor the several studentorganizations such asStudents for EnvironmentalAction (SEA).     FOUNDING DIRECTOR OFTHE USF OFFICE OFSUSTAINABILITY

    1) How and when did USF begin its efforts towards becoming a

    sustainable institution?

    USF was 'going green' long before it became popular. Since the mid-1990s,USF has been making efforts to build a sustainable and resilient campus.Most recently, in 2008, President Genshaft signed the American College andUniversity Presidents' Climate Commitment, which set the stage for majoradvances.

    2) What key programs have the university implemented to carry out the Office of Sustainabilitypledge to reduce negative environmental impacts of college operations?

    Since the signing of the Climate Commitment, we have: incorporated sustainability into our university'Strategic Plan, convened a sustainability steering committee that prepared the university's firstgreenhouse gas inventory and Climate Action Plan, established an Office of Sustainability,implemented a university-wide policy on institutional sustainability, launched the worlds' first School ofGlobal Sustainability, erected the first eco-friendly building on campus and, most recently, created amillion-dollar Student Green Energy Fund to steer USF toward a carbon-free economy fueled byrenewable energy.

    3) What major obstacles has the university faced throughout its efforts to go green?

    Our biggest obstacle (apart from everyone still wanting to drive to campus by themselves!) is funding.

    Without a recurring source of revenue to fund sustainability projects on campus, we won't be able tocontinue making gains.

    4) What was your reaction to USF's inclusion in the Princeton Review's Guide to 311 GreenColleges?

    I was honestly not surprised. After having been awarded a prestigiousGOLD rating from the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, andRating system (administered through AASHE.org), we have shown thBulls can do anything we put our minds to!

    5) What recommendations would you give to new studentsattending USF about how to make a positive greener impact on theuniversity?Get involved. There are so many wonderful student groups on campus that are making a hugedifference in the world. Don't be apathetic-- be active!

    The University of SouthFlorida has made greatprogress to achieve their goaltowards becoming asustainable university for thestudents, faculty, and TampaBay community as a whole.With the rise in recognition ofsustainable institutions, thereare several other schools that

    have made progress towardsgoing green. The Universityof South Florida has joinedArizona State University(ASU) and University ofCalifornia, Los Angeles(UCLA) as a CharterParticipant of the AASHESustainability Tracking,Assessment & RatingSystem. This voluntary self-reporting framework gaugesprogress of universities whohave comparable effortstowards becomingsustainable.

    The Global Institute ofSustainability is Arizona StateUniversitys center forsustainability initiatives.

    Similar to the University ofSouth Floridas Office ofSustainability, the Institute

    develops advances inresearch, education, as wellas finds practical solutions toenvironmental, economic,and social challenges. ASUsmission established by theGlobal Institute ofSustainability is to:

    Identify the grandchallenges ofsustainability

    Advance knowledge forapplied practicalsolutions

    Create new tools forimproved decision-making

    Prioritize university-wideefforts towardsustainable practices

    Build global research

    partnerships

    The mission statementsbetween ASU and USF arevery similar as bothuniversities have priorities tobuild partnerships for

    initiatives and makesustainable practices a

    priority around the campus.USFs ultimate goal is to

    transform the school intoaGreen University.

    Arizona State UniversitysSchool of Sustainability is acomprehensive degree-granting program with a focuon finding practical solutionsto environmental, economicand social challenges. Theschool, established in 2007,allows students to pursue abachelors, masters, or

    doctoral degree insustainability.

    The University of SouthFlorida recently established School of GlobalSustainability in 2010. Theiinitial degree program inGlobal Sustainability has a

    focus on water. However, theSchool has plans to evolvethe program to include abroader focus on sustainablecommunities.

    ASU has made significant

    efforts towards providingalternative transportationmethods, which ultimatelyresult in a reduction of trafficcongestion, air pollution, andautomobile fuel. Some oftheir programs in placeinclude a public transit passfor the METRO light rail to allfour campuses, free ridematching services to allowefficient carpooling, a bicycleborrowing service at no cost,and fuel-efficient rental carsthrough their partner Zipcar.

    ASU has decreased theamount of indoor and outdoorwater consumption on itscampus through installationof low-flow water fixtures andautomation of water systemsbased on current weatherconditions and various otherfactors affecting the plants.

    ASUs commitment to energyconservation has allowedthem to reduce consumption,increase efficiency, andminimize harmful emissions

    from the environment. Someof the advances they have inplace include roomtemperature guidelines,purchasing energy efficient

    computers, expanding solarinstallations throughout theirfour campuses, renewablewind energy through windturbines, and CampusMetabolism, an interactiveweb tool that allows its usersto access real-time energyand water on the campus.

    ASUs recycling efforts haveallowed the campus toreduce contamination inaddition to its university-widecomposting program.

    This program composts 14tons of landscaping wastemonthly at a local farm,therefore replacing artificialfertilizers. The campus also

    has a Ditch the Dumpsterevent allowing students torecycle, reuse, or repurposetheir leftovers as they moveout of residence halls.

    The Sustainable DesignPolicy at ASU has green

    design elements for newconstruction and majorrenovation projects. In 2005ASU adopted the Leadershiin Energy and Environmenta

    Design (LEED) Silvercertification for all newconstruction of university-owned and operatedbuildings.

    The Institute of Environmentand Sustainability is UCLAscenter for sustainabilityinitiatives.

    UCLAs mission establishedby the Institute ofEnvironment andSustainability is to:generate knowledge andprovide solutions for regionaland global environmentalproblems.

    UCLA has various programsconcentrating on climatechange and sustainabilityeducation at bothundergraduate and graduatelevels. In addition to offeringover 200 courses that directlyrelate to sustainability, UCLAis consistently rankednationally as one of the

    premier public researchuniversities worldwide. Withover 160 faculty dedicated toclimate sustainability-relatedresearch, the university iscommitted to combatingsustainability challenges.

    UCLA has enacted manyalternative transportationoptions in efforts to save gas,money, and harmfulemissions.

    congestion in LA, theuniversity began sustainabletransportation efforts since

    1984, long before thesustainable term was coinedUCLA provides numerousways to get to campuswithout driving alone such acarpool matching, vanpoolprograms, METRO tappasses, reduced bus rates fall students, as well aspromoting students to walk,

    bike, or even skate tocampus.

    UCLAs water conservationefforts include recovering anreusing clean water from nocontaminated sources forcampus cooling towers.

    UCLAs efforts to increaseenergy efficiency on campushas progressed over many

    years. With theimplementation of newprojects, they will be able toreach the goal of the UCPolicy on Sustainability. Oneof the major programs is theHVAC Retrofit Project, a$16.65 million energyconservation project that willreduce UCLAs carbonfootprint by nearly 17,000

    tons of CO2 annually. Theproject will retrofit HVACsystems in 25 buildingsaround the campus saving$4.2 million in annualoperating expenses.

    UCLA has decided that theymust increase the amount thecampus currently recycles.The recyclables ending up intrashcans add to the vastamount of waste sent tolandfills; therefore they haveestablished campus diversiongoals that require 75% ofwaste to be diverted fromlandfills by 2012.

    They have enhanced theirefforts to increase recyclingby changing labels onrecycling bins explaining whatcan be recycled. In addition,a frequently asked questionssection on the UCLA

    Sustainability website wasformed to educate studentsand faculty about recyclingguidelines.

    In 2003, UCLA adopted alandmark policy on GreenBuilding Design and Clean

    Energy Standards that haveset the precedence forsustainability initiativesstatewide. The university alsoestablished an equivalent tothe LEED certificationprocess that will be applied toall major construction andrenovation projects. The firstgreen building to be built oncampus houses the Institute

    of Environment andSustainability.

    In conclusion, both ASU andUCLA have unique policiesand programs dedicated tobecoming a sustainableuniversity such as ASUs

    enhanced green buildingdesign and UCLAs multi-million dollar energyconservation project. WithUSF, ASU, and UCLA all

    being honored as one of thePrinceton Reviews top greecolleges, it is evident thatthese universities have astrong commitment tosustainability.

    The University of SouthFlorida has accomplishedmany of their goals towardsgoing green. The Office ofSustainability pledge to not

    just promote environmentallysustainable practice, but to

    live it has become evidentwith their coveted Goldrating from the Associationfor the advancement ofSustainability in HigherEducation. Below are futuredevelopments USF has inplace to further theircommitment:

    Many of the buildingsconstructed around the USFmain campus have beentaller than those built in thepast. This is the result ofUSFs campus designinitiatives that highlight

    greenway expansion of openspace, integrated landscape,and waterscapeimprovement. Thepreservation of retention

    ponds, consistent planting oftrees, and an aggregatedstorm water system are alltransforming the USFcampus into a GreenUniversity as their missionstated.

    The recently opened School

    of Sustainability plans toadvance the school towards

    becoming a degree-seekingprogram offering bothundergraduate and graduatelevel degrees for students.The Patel center for GlobalSolution plans to continueresearching topics of globalconcern and sustainableactivities.

    USFs has adopted a LongRange Bicycle Lane Plan thatwill increase the amount ofsidewalks, bicycle lanes, andimprove the roadwaythroughout the campus.

    This will hopefully increasethe safety aspect of bikeriding around the campus anconvince more students tobike to campus rather thandrive.

    Under the Florida EnergyCode, USF has builtinsulation throughout walls,roofs, windows, andequipment efficienciesaround the campus. In effort

    to enhance energyconservation, USF has alsoreplaced F32 fluorescentlamps with F28 T8fluorescent lamps in buildingexceeding 4 million squarefeet. Also, they are planningto replace incandescenttraffic lights with LED trafficlights.

    There have been manydifferent renovation projectsto several buildings acrossthe USF campus such as thhighly anticipated Sun Dome

    renovation. The LEEDcertified buildings currently inthe construction phaseinclude the Wellness andNutrition Center,

    construction materials iscurrently in effect with thereplacement of old roofs tothose with high insulationvalues. Some of the building

    and construction plans to lookfor in the near future includethe Music Building, College ofMedicine improvements, and

    efforts to sustain. With USF implementing it policies for first year students to live on campus, i

    has increased the on campus population by a substantial amount of students. With this

    population increase, comes an increased amount of food and water waste. Aramark and USF

    Dining services have teamed up to conquer this expense and discussed in this article, USF

    Dining has gone tray less. This has had a substantial impact by potentially saving 200 gallons day of water.
