Dear Reader,

Fall 2010 saw the Team HBV Collegiate Chapters focus on developing new bonds with each other and our local communities, and in doing so, inspired people across the nation to join the fight against hepatitis B. The variety of demographics, experience, and member talents at each chapter contributed to an equally diverse set of events and campaigns. Some chapters held their first on-campus events, some chapters held favorite annual fundraisers and displays, and others established sustainable campus and community clinics. This report highlights inspiring and creative events from each chapter and the impact of our members on furthering the Jade Ribbon Campaign.

Uniting the nation On November 11-13, 2010, we held our 2nd Annual Team HBV Collegiate Chapters conference in Palo Alto, CA to network, share successful strategies, and learn how to increase our media presence. Conference participants described keynote speakers Dr. Samuel So and Ted Fang as “inspiring” and “passionate,” and loved “the good company”, nightlife, “team bonding games… HBV Plushie Workshop,” and “okay, let’s just say everything”. This successful conference would not have been possible without the involved support of the hosting chapter, Team HBV at Stanford.

The conference also marked the launch of the first-ever Intercollegiate Outreach Project, in which representatives from eleven chapters partnered with each other to brainstorm, develop, and present their ideas for a coordinated campaign to celebrate Hepatitis B Awareness Week in May 2011, which will coincide with National Hepatitis Awareness Month and Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Shout-outs We would like to recognize and thank Diana Ngo, Youth Programs Coordinator at the Asian Liver Center, for her continual and extremely dedicated 24/7 efforts on our behalf. We would also like to thank all the ALC staff and interns for their input on and support of our activities. And last but not least, our fondest regards to the outgoing Advisory Board members Jian, Derek, Jen W and Kristina. You will be missed.

Keeping the momentum The newly-appointed 2010-2011 Advisory Board hopes to continue its successful system of individualized chapter support and bring chapters closer together through coordinated Hepatitis B Awareness Week 2011 activities and other collaborations.

Together, we can eradicate hepatitis B and liver cancer!

Sincerely,Amanda, Francis, Jen, Philip, Jonny, and Melissa2010-11 Advisory [email protected]

Summary and Reflection Brown Team HBV jumpstarted the semester by becoming an officially recognized organization at Brown University. We recruited around 20 active members after attending the fall student activities fair. We have also recruited a solid executive board. Our first goal this semester was to focus on campus outreach to make Team HBV known among the student body and to educate our peers about viral hepatitis. We achieved our goal by organizing and attending campus events, and our message reached not only students but also faculty. Our second goal was to attend events outside of Brown University. After participating in conferences in Boston, we were able expand our network of students and also connect with other organizations in the community. In the spring semester, we joined with APAMSA to plan a series of HBV screenings in the community. We hope to continue recruiting more students for this cause and also plan further projects for community outreach.

Summary and Reflection Team HBV at Cornell’s main goal this past semester was to outreach to different organizations and diversify in our recruitment efforts. We successfully reached out to 700+ students and 10+ organizations on campus. We hope to maintain these networks in an effort to engage in more collaborative events for the upcoming semesters. For the spring of 2011, we have a number of events planned to continually raise more awareness about hepatitis B and liver cancer on campus and in the community.

Tabling at Grand Asia We tabled at Grand Asia (a local Asian supermarket) to spread hepatitis B awareness to local residents in the Triangle Area of North Carolina (Raleigh, Durham and Cary). Target audience: Local residents

The primary goal of Team HBV at Duke this semester was to raise money for the Jade Ribbon Campaign. However, due to the fact that our events were mostly on campus, we had a difficult time fundraising. Hopefully, we can improve on that aspect this upcoming semester. Foodfest was one particularly successful event in terms of campus education. Students wanted to know more about hepatitis B as we gave out cookies. Overall, we did well with the outreach aspect of our mission. One of the main obstacles that the chapter faces is recruitment. We hope to be able to improve on this process this Spring.

Together Empowering Asian Americans (TEA Walk) We attended an annual event held by a local community center with over 1500 members of the Asian American community. The walk focused on raising awareness and solidarity for community health. After the walk we gave out cookies with jade ribbons and educated walk participantsTarget audience: Local communityCommunity partner: Center for Pan Asian Community Services

Team HBV at Emory is excited to host its first real events aimed at promoting on campus awareness. We were able to garner a lot of student interest through the surveys and now have an idea of the current knowledge of HBV on campus. Although we have tabled at several events, it has been difficult to draw significant attention to our cause and we are looking toward collaborations to create a more focused event. Our community outreach was limited to the TEA walk but we look forward to doing educational sessions in the future. Finally, our initiative to promote free screening has proven challenging but we will continue to push forward during the spring semester.

Campus Outreach Initiative: Chopsticks As a part of the campus’ Asian American Awareness Week, a “Chopsticks” display was erected in a grassy quadrangle with heavy foot traffic during class hours. An online survey and raffle (for engraved chopsticks) dedicated to raising awareness of this display was utilized to assess impact, and educate students about this artistic display on hepatitis B. The display consisted of an informative banner strung behind 100 chopsticks planted in the grass, with every 10th chopstick demarcated with a green ribbon to signify the prevalence of hep B in Asian-Americans.Target audience: ~1000+ students; 232 people entered the online raffle.Community partner: Partnered with other participants of the Asian American Awareness Week to publicize this event. Groups included the Chinese Student’s Association, the Korean Association, and the Asian-American Brotherhood.

Summary and Reflection This past fall, Team HBV at Harvard strived to maintain its community outreach programs while expanding its presence on campus. For the first time, we participated in the campus-wide Asian American Awareness Week with an artistic outdoors display of chopsticks, combined with a viral campaign to attract awareness about hepatitis B as a health disparity for Asian Americans. In the community, we continued to organize Liver Health Program screenings that target minority populations for hep B screening, expanding our network of partners this semester to participate in local health fairs to reach out to even more community members. We continued to educate minority populations by presenting or tabling at ESL and citizenship classes, and holding booths at local cultural fairs in collaboration with the Hepatitis B Initiative of Boston. Finally, we continued our tradition of sponsoring the Jade Forum with HBI, a series of lectures open to the public and the Harvard community to discuss and raise awareness about hepatitis B.

Summary and Reflection Our chapter goals were definitely met for Fall quarter. We were very successful in recruiting new members, particularly young members, and have 10 new freshmen and a new sophomore. Our goal was mostly to focus on increasing team spirit and a sense of community, as well as mentoring the freshmen to become future leaders of Stanford Team HBV. This is being accomplished through a “Frosh Intern” program, in which the freshmen have been broken up into small teams and are in the process of orchestrating their own outreach events. Our fall quarter was very busy with organizing the National Conference. Most of our members were able to participate in some or all of the conference. This was a great learning experience for them. This quarter we will be focusing more on on-campus outreach events. We have a busy schedule for both this and next quarter.

Summary and Reflection This semester marked a time of transition for Team HBV at UC Berkeley, as Tiffany and Greg took over as new co-presidents of the Berkeley chapter. Goals for this semester included increasing member retention, creating structure during meetings, and increased community outreach. Member retention was decent throughout the semester, with many members consistently coming to weekly meetings. We still had the obstacle of midterms occurring during meeting times, so many members were not able to attend on a consistent basis. Structuring meetings by dividing into subgroups allowed for efficient group work and interaction between officers and members. Improvement could be made on how the work done within individual groups can be integrated efficiently with each other. Effective community outreach remained an obstacle, as getting responses from local community organizations was difficult. In the future, more persistence must be taken to establish long term relations with outside organizations. Overall, we did many good things that can hopefully be taken over to next semester in preparation for larger spring events such as HBAW.

We also passed out brochures and answered questions. Target audience: General population, new Asian immigrant families, low income familiesCommunity partner: Paul Hom Asian Clinic

20

Page 21: Team HBV Collegiate Chapters Fall 2010 Semester Report

Summary and Reflection Overall, we met most of our goals on educating and reaching out to our target population. A lot of our events were successful in that we were able to talk to students, patients, and those of Asian and Pacific Islander ethnicity on the importance of being aware of hepatitis B and liver cancer. One of our biggest obstacles this quarter was trying to recruit or attract more committed members. In tabling events, we were able to talk to many students about hepatitis B, but were more successful in educating than actually recruiting. In the 2010 Team HBV Collegiate Conference, we learned of different events and recruitment methods that other colleges used, and hopefully we can apply this knowledge to future recruitment events!

Summary and Reflection Team HBV at UCLA started its second year with a greater focus on collaborating with other student organizations, promoting awareness in the community, and volunteering at hepatitis B screenings. Fortunately, we have been able to build strong relations with other student groups such as NSUCLA and VCH that have allowed us to spread our campus outreach. In the community, we have been able to volunteer at numerous hepatitis B screenings with the Asian Pacific Liver Center—giving our members another opportunity to fight the hepatitis B virus hands-on. One of the main things that we will work on is advertising our club and recruiting more active members. We will aim to accomplish this by exploring more volunteer opportunities for our members. Overall, the 2010 Fall quarter at UCLA has been very eventful and our members have been very engaged in our activities.
