A Silver Baron’s Residence characteristically was the perfect representation of the extreme and almost instant wealth created from the silver boom of the late 19th century by combining old world elegance and new world style. The silver mining “baron” was rapidly born and the homes built by the new American aristocracy are replicate of Old World Elegance. This vintage style refers to a specific design that reflects a timeless European sensibility. Old world elegance style starts with the architecture. Detailed ceilings and woodwork, period windows, columns and arches are the backbone of this style. It relies on natural elements with timeless appeal. This translates currently into wood cabinets, elaborate wood trim and imported tiles and slabs used for flooring, walls and counter tops. The Silver Baron’s home was one of magnificence, grandeur and the nobility of the day. It is this rich history which inspired this featured estate.

LAKE CITY TOP SCHOOL DISTRICT IN STATE!

The top school district in the state of Colorado for this year is Hinsdale County RE1. Recently, the State Board of Education members rated more than 1,600 schools in our state and THE top school in Colorado was right here in Lake City. Lake City’s school earned 95.4% of the points possible in the rating system. The second place winner was the Aspen School District with 89.4% rating.

There are 178 school districts in the state and only 18 received the top rating “Accredited with Distinction” by earning 80% or above of the total points possible. Lake City was also included in the top schools last year. Our excellent school system is led by Dr. Karen Thormalen and she is supported by a staff of incredibly talented and dedicated school teachers. With only 96 students in the system, the student to teacher ratio is terrific.

A small district such as Lake City has a real challenge with an athletic program. Amazingly though, the school’s field soccer, basketball and track teams hold their own with towns much larger in size. Unlike larger school districts, each Lake City team member gets a chance to “get in the game”.

Our new school is state of the art but is already bursting at the seams with the addition of middle school and high school students to the program. In the recent past, middle and high school students were bused to Gunnison, but when given a choice to attend school here in Lake City, they all decided to stay at home.

This excellent school system was not built overnight. The struggle to build the new school was a tough one. The business community knew that in order to progress, Lake City must have an improved school system. The first tax increase was defeated, the community was divided and feelings ran very high on each side of the issue. A few years later when Lake City was on its way to being the progressive community that it is today, another vote was proposed. The tax increase was approved with the support of the entire community and Lake City had its new school that stands at the top of Colorado schools today.

ALPINE LOOP SCENIC BYWAYCOLORADO’S MOST BEAUTIFUL DRIVEThe Alpine Loop, located in the northern San Juan Mountains, is a spectacular 65 mile tour of some of America’s most magnificent scenery. The Loop connects three of the San Juan’s most historic and interesting villages: Lake City, Ouray and Silverton, all of which are full of gold mining history and incredible stories of danger and hardship experienced by the early miners. To access this scenic marvel, you will need a high-clearance, 4WD vehicle. The “road” goes through many old mining towns that have long since been described as ghost towns. Seeing these by-gone mines with all the old equipment will make you wonder how in the world they were able to get those huge pieces of machinery into these mountains - let alone up on the mountainsides.

Along the way, you will pass American Basin which is the most photographed wildflower area in the area. This spectacular mountain basin explodes with brilliant color in the summer months and should not be missed! You will go over Cinnamon and Engineer Passes - both over 12,000 feet - and from there you will get great views of Mt. Sneffels, Handies, Redcloud and Uncompahgre Peaks - all topping out above 14,000 feet.

Volcanic activity filled the southwest region of our state before humans were ever here. The volcanoes

created gold, silver, zinc and many other precious metals. In the late 1800’s, miners came west to seek their fortunes but conflicts with the Ute Indians became a real issue. Agreements with the Utes, to give up much of this mineral rich land, finally enabled the miners to access these treasures. At that point, many little towns evolved but only those with rail access were successful communities. Those settlements unable to be serviced by rail are the ghost towns you will view along the way. Many of the ghost towns were destroyed by floods, harsh winters or the mined gold and silver played out.

The majority of the land along The Alpine Loop is managed by the BLM or National Forest Service, however, many of the old mining claims are now in private hands. Large scale, hard-rock mining has become less economical and so development - particularly the construction of second homes and mountain cabins - has replaced mining as the preferred use of this unique mountain property - the mining claim. A move is underway to protect the Alpine Loop and yet private landowners, sportsman and outdoor lovers alike will still be able to enjoy the area.

Hinsdale County Colorado is absolutely blessed with 96% of our county being public land and open for all of us to enjoy. Included in that vast amount of public land is some of the most spectacular and beautiful country that Colorado has to offer. Much of this beautiful land has been designated wilderness. We have access to four wilderness areas and two wilderness study areas which are protected just as though they were actual wilderness. No motorized or mechanical transportation is allowed in these areas. This wilderness land offers unlimited opportunity to experience a return to nature just the way it was when discovered by our forefathers.

The Uncompahgre Wilderness covers 102,721 acres and is home to two of Lake City’s fourteeners, Wetterhorn Peak and the most beautiful Uncompahgre Peak. The trailheads of these two peaks can be accessed from North Henson Creek Road and Nellie Creek Road. You will need a good four wheel drive vehicle for both of these access points.

The La Garita Wilderness is the lesser traveled and encompasses 128,858 acres. It was one of the original five wilderness areas in the state. San Luis Peak at 14,014 feet and Wheeler Geologic Area are two of the outstanding things to visit here. The La Garita can be accessed at several points along the Cebolla Creek Loop, Spring Creek Pass and from the town of Creede. Most of the trails in the La Garita, as well as the other wilderness areas, are suitable for horses.

The Weminuche Wilderness at 488,210 acres is by far

the largest wilderness area accessible from Hinsdale County. It contains sections of the Colorado Trail and the Continental Divide Trail making it the more traveled of the wilderness areas in our region. It can be accessed from several points, the more popular access point is from the Rio Grande Reservoir south of Lake City.

For many years, access to the Powderhorn Wilderness, with 61,250 acres, was pretty limited due to the private land surrounding this wilderness. In recent years, the BLM has traded for ranches on the boundary and has made public access much easier. This area contains the largest continuous tundra in the lower 48 states. It also contains Powderhorn Lake and Devils Lake along with some of the most spectacular views of the San Juan Mountains available. Hiking trails into the Powderhorn Wilderness can be found in several areas around the Lake City area and is well worth the hike.

Redcloud Peak and Handies Peak Wilderness Study Areas contain 54,321 acres and is home to three of Lake City’s fourteeners: Handies, Redcloud and Sunshine Peaks. This study area contains some of the more spectacular evidence of the volcanic events that spawned these incredible San Juan Mountains of Colorado. Much of the remnants of Hinsdale County’s rich mining past can be found here as well. Numerous hiking trails can be accessed from the beautiful Alpine Loop. It is an area rich in history and is well worth the time spent on the trails.

The Colorado Trail is a 483 mile trail that runs from Denver to Durango. The trail traverses the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Its highest point is 13,384 feet above sea level and most of the trail is above 10,000 feet. Despite its high elevation, the trail often dips below the alpine timberline to provide a measure of safety in the exposed, storm-prone regions above tree line.

The trail is an established, marked and [mostly] non-motorized trail open to hikers, horse riders, and mountain bikes. Mountain bikes are prohibited on the sections which are designated wilderness. From the eastern terminus, southwest of Denver, the trail winds its way thru the state’s most mountainous regions to its final conclusion near Durango. Along the way, it passes thru eight mountain ranges, seven national forests, and six wilderness areas.

The trail passes through what is considered the state’s most beautiful country rising and falling dramatically from 5,500 feet to over 13,000 feet. Wildlife abounds and wildflowers in season are abundant. While much of the trail passes thru forest, a good portion of it reaches above timberline where the views are breathtaking.

Along the trail, you will encounter historic mining towns, ancient Indian trails and a modern world class ski resort. Much of the trail appears much as it was 500 years ago. The western part of the trail from Monarch Pass to Durango is generally considered the most scenic; it has less human influence, greater vistas and spectacular wildflowers.

Summer days are warm with cool nights but unpredictable mountain weather can threaten snow any month of the year. Violent thunder storms can happen very quickly and then give way to warm sunshine and cloudless skies. The best time to travel the trail is June thru mid-October. The most spectacular time would be mid-September.

The Silver Thread Scenic Byway is a 125 mile drive from South Fork, on Highway 160, up Highway 149, through Lake City and ending at Blue Mesa Reservoir on Highway 50. This scenic byway offers not only beauty and natural wonders, but also Colorado history through abandoned gold and silver mines and boomtowns. At the height of the mineral rush, this road was a major thoroughfare for prospectors and entrepreneurs, boasting towns of thousands of people seeking their fortunes. Now only a shadow of its crowning glory, this stretch of highway attracts visitors with its beauty, history, wildlife and alluring vistas.

As you travel along you’ll come to Wagon Wheel Gap a narrow passage along the Rio Grande River said to be a favorite place for Indians to ambush wagons filled with supplies for the mining camps. Also in this area is the road to the Wheeler Geological Area, an unbelievable site of volcanic remains. Very diffi-cult to get to, but well worth the trouble. Plan a full day for this adventure. As you drive toward Creede, watch along the fence line for birdhouses which are usually occupied by the beautiful Rocky Mountain Bluebird. You are on the Bluebird Trail. Creede is a quaint little mining town that was not so long ago a silver mining area producing vast amounts of the precious metal. Spend some time in Creede with its shops, mining museum and home of the famous Creede Repertory Theatre.

Along the byway, you will usually encounter a herd or two of bighorn sheep, elk crossing the road, mule deer on the mountainside and moose in the distant willow breaks. North Clear Creek Falls is a little known magnificent site that is visited by very few people. Watch carefully for the signs, because in your wildness dreams you would never expect a beautiful waterfall in this area. Shortly after leaving the falls, you will begin to climb toward Slumgullion Pass where the famous earthslide formed Lake San Cristobal, Colorado’s most beautiful and second

largest natural lake. Always stop at the “Overlook” and take in the view of the lake and the surrounding mountains that were the sides of an ancient volcano.

Dropping down into Lake City is an experience that most people will never forget. This little town sits in the valley floor surrounded by thirteen and fourteen thousand foot mountain peaks. Lake City is a special place and time should be spent here.

Leaving Lake City you will pass many beautiful ranches and mountain homes and come to Powderhorn, a ranching community that supplied the beef, hay and many vegetables for the mining towns in the area. Powderhorn is still a cattle producing area but fishing cabins and summer homes are more plentiful now.

Seventeen miles down this incredible scenic route, you will come to the massive and gorgeous Blue Mesa Reservoir, which dead ends at Highway 50. This is the end of The Silver Thread Scenic Byway. A drive worth taking!

WHEELER GEOLOGIC AREANEAR CREEDE, CO

The Wheeler Geologic Area is located high in the La Garita mountain range of south central Colorado near the little town of Creede. Wheeler is 640 acres of haunting landscape in the Rio Grande National Forest. When you find Wheeler the mysterious spires will not be the only ghost around. This is the area where John Charles Fremont led his expedition of 36 men in the winter of 1848 to prove that a rail line could work in the Colorado Rockies, even in the dead of winter. Wheeler only proved that even men and mules could not survive in the harsh winters of these mountains. Snowbound the men camped near Wheeler and as the men weakened, they watched over a hundred mules die in one night. The men survived on mule meat and to this day, some believe they even resorted to cannibalism. In desperation Fremont sent to New Mexico for help. Eventually Kit Carson rode in to rescue the few survivors.

Wheeler is very difficult to get to, but if you do, you will be rewarded with, in the words of Frank Spencer, who was sent to look at Wheeler for the Forest Service, “A truly remarkable site…before us, enhanced by the rays of the setting sun, lay the vista of what seemed to us an enchanted city. Spires and domes, castles and cathedrals, mosque and temples, with the fluted columns and wonderfully carved friezes, were arrayed in a confusing panorama of form and color.”

Spencer recommended that it be designated a national monument and in honor of Captain George Wheeler, who led the war department’s surveying team through Colorado in 1874, on December 7, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed just that - Wheeler National Monument was official.

Even with all its beauty and after over 100 years since its discovery, access to Wheeler can be very difficult. Recently, a good road and primitive campground have been established within a few miles of Wheeler. It no longer has the designation of a national monument and is now a part of the Rio Grande National Forest. This is one of the few areas where visitors are not encouraged primarily because of the fragile nature of the site.

HOT SPRINGS IN PAGOSA SPRINGS COLORADO

The hot springs at Pagosa Springs has a long history of disputed ownership. The Utes and the Navajos fought over territory for years and had finally come to an agreement that the San Juan River would serve as a dividing line between the two nations. The hot springs near the river was still a point of contention.

Legend tells us that to settle this dispute each tribe chose a warrior to represent them and they would fight to the death and the winner would own the spring. The Navajo warrior was a huge man widely known for his fighting ability. The Utes chose a white man integrated into the tribe thru marriage and he was given his choice of weapons. He was known for his ability with a Bowie knife and that was his weapon choice. As the struggle began, he quickly threw the knife and it was buried to the hilt into the heart of the Navajo. This is only legend but the Utes were the main tribe to use the hot spring.

In July of 1859, a group of topographical engineers discovered the spring and white men slowly began to discover the area and enjoy the healing warm waters of the springs. The Utes tolerated this intrusion in the summer time but refused to let them use the spring in the winter. The hot springs was the gathering place for the Indians in the winter.

In 1873, the United States acquired the land from the Utes with the Brunot Treaty. With this acquisition,

white settlers began moving into the area and soon disputes began over ownership of the spring. In 1877, an Executive Order by the President of the United States designated one square mile with the hot spring in the exact center as a United States of America town site. It was platted in 1883 and in 1885 building lots were appraised and patents sold to individuals. In 1881, Thomas Blair erected the first public bath house on the banks of the San Juan River and ditches were constructed to carry the hot water to the site.

In 1885, Archuleta County was created. Pagosa Springs was incorporated in 1891 and became the county seat. The hot spring was the focal point of the town and the hot spring was looked at as a possible site for a health resort for people with all sorts of ills. In the early days the healing properties of the springs were highly touted and in fact the water coming from the spring is highly mineralized and cannot be discounted as to having medical benefits. Hydrotherapy is the use of warm or hot water for recuperative and healing purposes. This is one of the oldest forms of medical treatment known to man.

Pagosa Hot Springs is the deepest hot spring in the world and no one really knows the actual depth. It has been determined it is at least 2500 feet deep, but the bottom has never been reached. The water comes out of the ground between 144 and 150 degrees and flows at approximately 700 gallons a minute. The hot water has been used to heat homes and commercial property alike for years. It has also given birth to an industry all it’s own for this little town. The Resort Industry. Pagosa Springs has several resorts that use the incredible waters of the hot springs. They range from full hook up RV facilities to luxury beyond your wildness dreams. They are a perfect compliment to Wolf Creek Ski Area just up the mountain. Ski all day and relax in the warm waters of the hot springs at night.

The beautiful aspen tree, although it grows in a number of states, seems to be very special to those of us who live in the state of Colorado. The quaking leaves of summer provide shade from the summer sun and provide protection for the state flower, the columbine. All who live here rejoice in the fall when the beautiful leaves turn their vibrant shade of gold but each has quiet reservations knowing that it signals the end of the glorious summer season.

It’s kind of guessing game as to when peak color will happen in late September in southern Colorado. It is always within a week one way or the other but you just never know. When it does occur it only lasts about a week or two before the inevitable cold front passes through with the wind that takes the golden color away.

The local folks that have lived here awhile have special patches of aspen that they watch each day to help make an “educated” guess as to when the best time for photographs, jeep trips or picnic lunches would be. There are hundreds of articles written each year about the best places to go to see the color. There are so many places around Lake City that are worth taking the time to see.

The drive up Slumgullion Pass is always spectacular especially looking over Lake San Cristobal. If the tops of the mountains behind the lake have a snow covering and the Lake has its incredible blue color of fall, you will never see a more beautiful sight. The drive toward Creede, at least as far as North Clear Creek Falls, is always beautiful. One little known drive is to take the Deer Lakes road as far as Cathedral and then take the little road to Highway 114. It is seldom traveled, but in the fall it is incredible! The drive to Sherman is always beautiful and continuing on to

American Basin offers awesome color, as well as, driving from Lake City to Capitol City. This drive is always splendid with the amazing fall color.

Statewide, a few of the more popular drives are the Dallas Divide and Lizard Head Pass (leaving from the town of Ridgway, located south of Montrose). Another popular drive is Kebler Pass (leaving from the town of Crested Butte). Gunnison County has done a great job on County Rd. 12. It is a comfortable and spectacular drive.

When the color of the glorious aspen is in full bloom, it is very difficult to find a drive in western Colorado that is not spectacular!
