Domestic violence is a behavior used by one person in a relationship to control the other.

Partners may be married or not married.

It affects people of all genders, races, class and sexual orientation.

Page 4: Team powerpoint 2

Domestic violence only happens to poor women and women of color.

Domestic violence happens in all kinds of families and relationships. Persons of any class, culture, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, age, and sex can be victims or perpetrators of domestic violence.

Domestic violence is a personal problem between a husband and a wife.

Domestic violence affects everyone

Alcohol, drug abuse, stress, and mental illness cause domestic violence.

Alcohol use, drug use, and stress do not cause domestic violence; they may go along with domestic violence, but they do not cause the violence. Abusers often say they use these excuses for their violence.

Generally, domestic violence happens when an abuser has learned and chooses to abuse

Domestic violence is rarely caused by mental illness, but it is often used as an excuse for domestic violence.

If it were that bad, she would just leave.

There are many reasons why women may not leave. Not leaving does not mean that the situation is okay or that the victim want to be abused.

Leaving can be dangerous. The most dangerous time for a woman who is being abused is when she tries to leave.

About 1 in 3 American women have been physically or sexually abused by a husband or bofriend at some point in their lives.

In 1996, 30% of all female murder victims were killed by their husbands or boyfriends.

If there is a fire arm in the house and there is probable cause of domestic violence the weapon can be temporarily seized.

A cop can arrest the abuser even without a complaint from the victim.

Child Protective Services’ primary objective is to keep children safely within their own families. CPS works cooperatively with parents to make

that happen. Child Protective Services is a program that seeks to help families by strengthening the ability of parents, guardians or custodians to provide good care for their children. The program tries to balance the

legal rights of parents and the needs and rights of children to live in a physically and emotionally healthful situation ("Arizona Department Of

Economic Security ", 2012).

A man comes into a domestic violence center and reports that his wife has been throwing things at everyone in the house and calling everyone names (including the children). He also reports that his wife has hit him a few times and that he is worried that she will hurt the kids. The center offers to find the man some shelter but the man refuses and goes home. As he walks out you hear one of the kids say they don’t want to go home because they are scared of their mom.

A woman calls a domestic violence hotline because she is scared of her husband. She tells the hotline that she can’t leave because she needs his help to take care of herself. She is very depressed and needs someone to talk to so the hotline sends out a team to talk to her. When the team gets there she has to yell to tell them to just come in because she can’t get out of bed. While talking to her the team notices that it appears she has not taken a shower in a while. The husband returns and tells the team that they must leave because he is her guardian and he doesn’t want them there.

A woman attends a domestic violence support group and in talking to the other members she talks about how her husband threw her up against the wall the night before. The group members urge her to leave the house but she decides not to.

“Federal laws on child abuse and domestic violence fund services and shelters for victims, but there is no comparable federal law on elder abuse.” (American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging, 2005 p. 1)

It is estimated that only one in every 10 cases of elder abuse is reported.

("Meapa: Area Agency On Aging", 2012).
