Background

• San José lagoon has 4.52 km (2.81 miles) of longitude, 2.2 km of width.

• Born in San Juan Bay and connects with Martin Peña Chanel, and the Torrecillas Lagoon by the SuárezChanel

• The northwest section of the lagoon is referred to as the Laguna Los Corozos.

Background

• The decades of 1950 to 1960,

– Dredged to depths of up to 11 meters,

– Impacting the recirculation of water that means the SJL began to change its morphology;

– About 90 percent of the watershed area of the lagoon is urbanized (USGS, 1983).

Justification and data description

• According to the SJEB Program the results ofwater monitoring shows that its waters hascontaminated– lack of oxygenation,

– coliforms fecal, fecal enterococcus,

– high turbidity by Secchi Depth

• Degradation of ecosystems in particular habitatdestruction of organisms.

• Water Quality Grade = C.

Objectives

• Describe the chemical parameters of quality water existing data in the SJL.

• Evaluate the relation between the chemical parameters of water such as Dissolve Oxygen, Turbidity, and Coliforms Fecal and qualification index of SJL.

Page 7: Team Water Quality Model in San Jose Lagoon Pre-proposal Presentation

Hypothesis

• H0: The Water Index to SJL does not change respect to the year.

• H0: The Turbidity Variation of SJL is the same for each year of the study period of time.

• H0: The month proportion of Dissolve Oxygen in SJL is random.

• H0: The amount of Coliform – Fecal does not affect the Classification Water Index in SJL.

Methodology

• Prior information will be provided by SJEB Program.

– Standards: The San José Lagoon components of theestuary are classified as SB waters – coastal andestuary waters intended for use in primary andsecondary contact recreation, and for propagationand preservation of desirable species

Methodology

• Each one of the hypothesis can be resolve using a statistical framework and the data collected by the SJEB Program.

• In accordance with the Water Quality Classification Model of in the estuary of the Bay of San Juan to establish inconsistencies in definitions and descriptions of the parameters.

San Juan Estuary Bay Program Model

• Scope = the numbers of contaminant that exceeded the PR Water Quality Standard.

• Frequency = the proportion of samples for each contaminants that exceeded PR Water Quality Standards.

• Amplitude = the amount by which the samples exceeded the PR Water Quality Standard.

• Index: 100 – (square root (scope2 + frequency 2 + amplitude 2)/1.732
