Working party's concerns

Establishing competencies

Mapping them on to existing educational frameworks

Should BALEAP create a qualification for EAP?

This could be in portfolio form – developmental as much as a 'passport' to employment

September 2005 Pilot survey of experienced EAP practitioners

Partly informed by European Profile for Language Teacher Education (Kelly et al)

15 respondents commented on the desirability of 62 competencies in: Education & Experience

Academic Knowledge & Understanding

Linguistic Knowledge & Understanding

Attitudes

Approaches

Skills & Abilities

March 2006 survey of EAP practitioners

Similar format to pilot survey with respondents commenting on descriptors

91 respondents from 38 HEIs with a wider range of experience

Quantitative data: competencies as ‘essential for all teachers’, ‘non-essential’ or ‘dependent on the teaching context’

Qualitative data: comments in each category

Autumn 2006 Reformulation of the core competency framework

Competency levels: induction, post-induction

Knowledge & Understanding vs Ability to …

Extra ‘Evidence’ column

New sub-category areas: (see new draft doc)

April 2007 Joint paper at Durham – BALEAP conference

Where we are now … and where we would like to be …

A description of ‘good practice’ could contribute towards the accreditation of EAP teacher development programmes or provide a series of reference points for individuals building up their own EAP portfolios

Spring 2008 Competencies published

Trial run of how BALEAP Accreditation Scheme criteria fit the TEAP Competencies in BAS inspections Summer 2008

May 2009 Training for Assessors in BALEAP Accreditation Scheme
