1 Overview Continuity testing is the act of testing the resistance between two points. Through the use of a Digital Multimeter, if there is very low resistance (less than a few Ohms), the two points are connected electrically, and a tone is emitted. If there is more than a few Ohms of resistance, than the circuit is open, and no tone is emitted. This test helps insure that connections are made correctly between two points.

2 Summary This Technical Bulletin will direct the Technician where to test Continuity for Constant Power, Ignition Sense, and Chassis Ground for the following WS850 Cables:

• Ignition Sense – Auxiliary Power Cable (PN 840-00204) • OBD II Vehicle Bus Cable (PN 840-00216) • J1939 – 9-Pin Vehicle Bus Cable (PN 840-00217) • J1708 – 6-Pin Vehicle Bus Cable (PN 840-00218) • HD OBD – Volvo Vehicle Bus Cable (PN 840-00229)

4 Conclusions The WS850 recommends that both the Vehicle Bus Cable and the Aux Power Cable be used simultaneously to aid in tamper resistance. With a device P/N 900-00099 REV A or newer versions, the Aux Power input can be connected to any convenient power source, as identified in the most recent WS850 Installation Manual. Use of this Technical Bulletin will aid the technician to properly troubleshoot and diagnose power related issues.
