3. I would say its essential to create a culture ofinnovation
in the school. Accept that there willbe many successes and some
failures, thosefailures will drive even more success. Have asolid
plan in place that involves all constituentsin the process, and
ensure the plan has clearlydefined outcomes. From a nuts and
boltsstandpoint I would say ensure the infrastructureis where it
needs to be. If teachers do not trustthe technology, it will not be
used.-Ryan Imbriale, Principal, Patapsco HighSchool

17. Successful principals focus not onlyon what needs to be
reformed inschools, but address how they goabout fostering and
leading changethrough a strategic process involvinggathering and
analyzing data todetermine priorities, explore possiblesolutions,
assess readiness and buildcapacity, create and communicate
theimprovement plan, implement theplan,, and then monitor and
adjust thepan when necessary.

26. The same technology leadersbelieve students should be
usingis banned at many schools. Tech-savvy leaders teach students
touse these tools safely andappropriately for their education.
28. Only about 18% of teachers feel comfortable withintegration
of technology.Approximately 82% are only moderately comfortableor
very uncomfortable with integrating technology.
29. Facebook Debate:I am really concerned that our kids will be
drawn into those criticalattributes in FaceBook that are not
related to the classroom topics. Our kids lack that personal
self-discipline.Our responsibility is to teach our students proper
etiquette andprepare them for their careers. Social media isnt
going anywhere. We need to teach not limit.Facebook is one of the
ways our students communicate. There is somuch to be taught and
supported- how to write appropriately, howwhat you write is there
forever, and how to manage emotions, at analready emotional time,
when consuming posts. When we "lock it out" because colleagues dont
want to police it ordevelop lessons on appropriate use, it doesnt
help us help ourstudents.
30. Leaders who Blog:Our school and classroom blogs serve as a
communication platformand digital portfolio. My personal blog links
media, technology andcurrent events. My school blog chronicles
school and school boardtechnology happenings. My blog shares ways to
integrate technology as well as myleadership thoughts and ideas. I
share my blog with our teachersand administrators. Often teachers
will ask me questions about atool or a way to do something with
digital resources, and if Ivewritten about it already or compiled
resources I simply link them tomy blog post or wiki resource page.
Having a blog and wiki saves metime in the long run and helps me
organize what I have alreadyresearched and wrote about.
31. Impact on School CultureExpanded the classroom walls of
learning. Students see technologyaccess as more than just gossiping
on Facebook or Twitter; they arebeginning to see the more practical
uses of social media forlearning. It has helped us create a student
centred school that allowsstudents to have choice and influence in
their learning. It has helpedus create real and powerful learning
experiences and connected ourkids with people all over the
world.Almost every teacher has an iPad and we have made it apart
ofevery staff meeting. We are steadily moving towards using
someform of technology in every classroom and building a
schoolstructure to promote tech in the classroom.
32. Impact on School CultureWe have gone from desktop, stand
alones to iPads and 1:1 in just 1.5years. Attendance is up 15%.
Discipline incidents are down.Graduation rate has increased.
Parental involvement has increased.Student pride and engagement is
up. Instruction and academicengagement is up.The biggest impact has
been with teaching students to be cognizantof their digital
footprint. This group of students has always knowntechnology; few
have other means to communicate. UsingFacebook, Instagram and
Twitter inappropriately have had negativeconsequences on some
students (bullying, difficulty securingemployment, questions from
college admissions).Integrating a viable online blog in ELA courses
has helped studentsself correct, monitor others writings, and learn
quickly from pastmistakes.
33. Positive School Culture Allows Leaders to:1. Be available
to their faculty to assist in improving instructionalstrategies
through spending more time in classrooms2. Serve as a mentor and
encourage the development ofleadership traits in
others3.Collaborate with other school leaders to improve their
ownprofessional growth and development4. Communicate openly and
honestly with all stakeholders andpromote the achievements of
students and teachers5. Problem-solve with other leadership team
members and keystakeholders throughout the community

35. Leaders can connect an entire learning community
fromstudent, parent, community, teacher, other leaders if they have
theright skill set and tools. Leaders can block or allow innovation
forthemselves and others. Budget cuts are everywhere. Tech support
isdown putting more responsibility on building principals. Even
more sowhen sole building administrator. Tech savvy amplifies
school basedefforts in many forms -instructional, managerial, PD,
secretarial, outreach, personal learningnetworks, and on and on.
Tech savvy helps leaders suck the bestresources from daily, local
and national conferences via backchannel.Tech savvy is a mindset
our kids already have. We must do our best tosee through their lens
each day. IMO (in my opinion) Tech savvy leaderstend to trust
students and teacher more. We need more trust inschools.-Joe Mazza,
