Getting to Know: Katie Van Allen

What is your position at Campbell University? What does that position encompass? I am an assistant professor of psychology at Campbell. I also have the exciting job of being a “shared” faculty member, which means that I get to teach at Main Campus as well as at the extended campuses and online. Additionally, I am preparing to take on a new role as the online adviser for the new online psychology degree program.

How many years have you been with Campbell University Online? I have been with CU Online for three years now.

What is your favorite part about working with CU Online? One of my favorite parts of working with CU Online is that it never gets monotonous. There are always new and exciting changes taking place. Also, I love the creative outlet that it provides for me. I really enjoy the challenge and intellectual stimulation of developing new activities and assignments that mesh with the online platform, and I enjoy learning about and incorporating new types of technology.

Provide a brief background of yourself: Although I grew up in an Air Force family, we did not move around too much, and I spent most of my life in New Mexico and Virginia. I attended college at both James Madison University and George Mason University in VA, and I received my Master’s and PhD in social psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. After graduating in 2009, I taught full-time at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh for 1 year and then accepted a position at Campbell--where I’ve remained ever since. Currently, I live in Fuquay-Varina with my husband, Brian, and my three children—Mason (6), Paisley (4), and Piper (2), and they definitely keep me busy outside of work! As a family, we enjoy traveling, spending time with friends and family, and being involved with our church in Fuquay.

What are your favorite hobbies and places to visit when not working? When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time gardening and taking my kids to the park. Our family loves spending time outside! I also enjoy crafting and am a huge fan of Pinterest. Additionally, with all of our extended family living out of state, I do enjoy traveling to visit my parents in New Mexico and my husband’s parents in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Lastly, I am a self-described Disneyphile, and we do try to get down to Walt Disney World once a year, if possible.

6 Ways to Reach out to Your Students:

Announcements The announcements feature of Blackboard is a good way for instructors to communicate to their students in their course. The instructor can set the announcement to release immediately or at an appointed later date and time. Announcements are a good way to give a brief weekly overview for your online course.

Emails The email function in Blackboard allows instructors to communicate with their students from the course itself. The instructor may choose to email all students at one time or a select group or individual. The email function can be found in the Control Panel of the course or placed in a link in the course menu.

Rubrics Using rubrics in the Blackboard course is another great way to communicate to your students. Rubrics can be built in Blackboard that will enable you to present your expectations to your students for specific assignments. Rubrics typically lend themselves to written assignments including papers, assignments, or essays.

Discussion Boards Another way to communicate with students in your online course is to use discussion boards. One of the best settings for Blackboard discussion boards is the “Subscribe” feature. This allows instructors to receive an email when a student has made a comment on a particular forum or thread such as an, “Ask Your Instructor” forum.

Crocodoc feedback Crocodoc allows instructors to review and grade documents in Blackboard and also leave comments on the document itself. It is a virtual way to grade papers without having to print them. This is another good way to communicate with your students in your online course.

Google Docs Using Google Docs is a great way to communicate with students in an online environment as well. This is an especially good tool to use for group projects because it allows all parties to create and view comments on the project in real time. Instructors can also make comments throughout the process.
