The technical elements of a campaign short film “Second a

Day”SAVE THE CHILDREN

Mise en scene• There are many locations used in the short film campaign such as the

Football pitch, playground and park. This is done deliberately to illustrate how the innocent young girls life turns into fear and misery. These locations are also used to connote how stress less her life was how ‘normal’ her lifestyle was, how a normal young girls life should be. This also makes it clear to the audience that the young girl is in primary school which also shows the importance of the Syria children at young ages dying from a disease, lack of food, loss of family members, violence from war etc. On the other hand the short film switches to more disturbing locations outside of her original home such as the explosion of the girls school, Outside in front of damaged buildings and lastly the hospital. They use the change of locations to indicate contrast between the two lifestyles of the girl, they want to show how any innocent young child could go through what Syrian children go through on a daily basis.

• In the short campaign film they use props such as the birthday cake, mask, lipstick, toys, recorder, helmet, books, bags, tablet, candles, medicine, bottle of water, a teddy, gas mask, food, and lastly birthday cake with one candle. They use these props deliberately to illustrate the girls lifestyle, the production team want to make the campaign short film realistic as possible they do this to

Camera

• The main camera technique they use is the depth of field: shallow focus: foreground girl. They do this to illustrate the innocent girls emotions towards the audience. It brings importance towards the Syrian children out in bad environments. • Close ups are used deliberately to emphasize emotions and for the

audience to feel connected to the girl and to also emphasize the change in happiness to sadness. Also it shows the rapid changes in location.• Static (tripod)/ handheld (pans) is used consistently to make you

feel as like you are actually there and when it is in handheld it emphasizes the environment the family is in.

Sound• The sounds used in the short film campaign is the Radio,

TV, this is diegetic and is synchronised. This connotes war is occurring as it is seen on the TV and heard in the background. They make it clear towards the audience as there is noise of explosives, and buildings crumbling, cars exploding etc. • They include enhanced sounds of the football, aeroplanes,

sirens to send shock towards the audience and the importance of the Syria corruption.

Editing

• Multiple different editing techniques are used in the short campaign film such as multiple cuts, the cutting rate. The cutting rate is very fast. The editor purposely cut each scene every second to connote each day and the build up of the change in her normal lifestyle being switched round to sadness.• Jumping cuts and different shots are used to emphasize each

segment of the short film so it remains in the audiences memory • Matched cuts and similar shots are put together to signify the

changes in story of the innocent girls life being turned around referring to the Syrian children in need
