Goldberg machine n  Task of the machine: •  Pop a balloon

n Requirement: •  Creative and Fun

n  Technical Requirements: •  Start with a button •  End with popping a balloon •  At least FIVE (5) steps

1st semester, 2012 2 ENGG1015 Project

A Rube Goldberg Machine Step

INPUT n  Sensor: Light,

force, infrared

n  Switches: mechanical switches

n  Potentiometer

OUTPUT n  Motor n  Fan

n  Solenoid

PROCESS n  Relay n  Logic?

Two Required Steps

LAB 4 n  Ball counting Tunnel

LAB 8 n  Light Tracker

1st semester, 2012 ENGG1015 Project 4

Other Project Requirements n  Limited virtual budget n You may use materials not provided by us

if and only if they are free / reusable. n Example: •  a used water bottle – ok •  Your own mobile phone – ok •  A brand new mobile phone – not ok

n  (Of course, we cannot verify the cost of any extra material. But solving the problem by money is not the most creative solution we can imagine)

1st semester, 2012 5 ENGG1015 Project

Grading Criteria n  Functionality

•  It must be able to pop a balloon at the end •  We’d rather have a simple but functional solution

than a very complicated/fancy/elaborated design that does not work.

n  Creativity •  Once you have a functional design, we differentiate the

good from the best based on creativity •  Subjective measurement •  Fun factors count

n  Team work •  We will talk to each group during the final presentation

to see how the project has worked as a team

1st semester, 2012 ENGG1015 Project 6

Bonus Points n  There will be a final project presentation +

competition

n Winning on competition add bonus points to your project

n Competition items: •  Time preciseness – The team that can have

the balloon pop in exactly 1 minute wins. •  Most number of stages •  User’s choice – The favorite among spectators

1st semester, 2012 ENGG1015 Project 7

Rough Schedule n Before Nov 12, 23:55pm •  Form group, submit group name and group

member list online

n Before Nov 13, 5pm •  Put in your 1st equipment request

n Nov 14 – Dec 4 •  2-6 pm lab open for project construction

1st semester, 2012 8 ENGG1015 Project

Working on the Project

n The lab will be opened from 2pm to 5pm every weekday

n You may work on the project any time you want during that period

n Safety goes first

usual office hours to answer any questions

n Additional office hour planned

n See Piazza n Email the TA on duty AHEAD to book a 15
