ForewordBy Musn Simon Jolly BMus(Hons) Band of the Irish Guards

Good, better, best; never let it rest until your good isbetter and your better is best

As I write this foreword, I recall the words of many apast teacher. The difference between an amateur and aprofessional; amateurs practise until they get it right, professionals practise until they cant get it wrong and

so forth.Technical Studies for Advanced Playersprovides the ideal

accompaniment to any advanced players daily routine. Thetechnical studies in this book are derived from each key,

working through major, minor, diminished, dominants, whole tones and chromatics, the essentials of music

making. For many years, many players have used many study books

looking for the perfect exercises to improve thefundamentals of their playing; as an advanced player itis equally important to maintain these fundamentals to

the highest standard. Technical Studies for AdvancedPlayers is a unique book providing the opportunity to

practise these fundamentals in only 8 studies. As I was growing up, learning to play, my teachers spenthours drilling into me the importance of learning my

scales and key signatures and practising each aspect ofmy playing. As a working musician it is not always

possible to practise each fundamental in detail each day,Technical Studies for Advanced Playershas a unique Tech

    Ex Light

    (a shorthand of each exercise)

which can easilybe carried by any player and used anywhere required;ideal for the working musician.

Technical Exercises for Advanced Playershas become anindispensible part of my daily routine and any advanced

player should make it part of theirs.

    Introduction

I have been teaching for a number of years now and havealways had a good selection of trumpet methods from which tochoose for my pupils, some of them I learnt from as a student, others I have been introduced to by colleagues and friends, yet more I have found in music shops and online. There aremany excellent methods out there and I dont feel I haveanything to add to that field just yet!

I did, however, want to add something to the vast library ofmaterial out there for Trumpet players and our Valved Brasscolleagues.

    And here it is...

A book of technical exercises (Etudes, Studies, Drills, whatever you like to call them) derived from the types ofscales which many of us learnt in the course of doing ourAssociated Board exams. It is not the number of exercises youplay, or the number of times you play them, which improveyour playing, attention to detail and honest self-reflection(criticism and praise) are what pushes you forward. So, withthis in mind there are only 8 exercises - one exercise foreach type of scale but every key is covered!

    Nick Jolly

A note on layout the book has been formatted so that each exercise covers a double page inorder to minimise page turns during exercises. There is only one in the whole book!
