Pride Lift Chairs are equipped with six types of scissor mechanisms: two-position, two-position (GL555), three-position, three-position (KD), infinite position, and the TMR575 (footrest extension). These take the chairs throughvarious degrees of recline. Two-position mechanisms raise the footrest and recline the back to a 45 degree angle atthe same time. Three-position scissors allow the footrest and the back to work simultaneously until the footrestreaches its ultimate height, where the back will recline to approximately 65 degrees. Infinite position scissormechanisms let the footrest and the back work independently. The TMR 575 has an extended footrest to accommo-date taller users. The footrest can raise without any back movement, and they also allow the back to recline thechair into a virtually horizontal sleeping position. See figure 33 - 39.

The lifting mechanism is comprised of a low voltage electric motor and a control box/transformer that transformsthe high voltage (120VAC) to 24-30VDC. Internally there is an acme screw/worm gear system that pushes thechair to the lift position and pulls it to recline. The motors are equipped with an integrated battery backup systemto assist the user out of the chair during a power failure. Pride Lift Chairs made after January 2004 have externaltransformers and low voltage heat and massage. See figures 40 through 43.

If the lift chair has no power, try the following steps to identify the problem.

Check the power source. Follow the cord to the wall outlet and make sure that it is firmly plugged into theoutlet. Test the outlet with another appliance or a multimeter to ensure the outlet is active.

If the motors on the standard, dual, or infinite lift chairs are not working properly, start with the electronics assem-bly/transformer.

1. Check the motor voltage. Unplug the hand control from the control box or transformer. With a multimeter setto 200VDC, place the RED lead into pin 1. See figure 44.

2. Place the BLACK lead into pin 2. The meter should read 38VDC +/-10%. See figure 44.3. Next, place the BLACK lead into pin 3 and take a reading. The meter should also read 38VDC +/-10%. See

figure 44.

The meter reads_________volts.

To test the old style control box and standard external transformer (no heat/massage):

1. Disconnect the control box from the transformer. Set the multimeter to 200VDC.2. Place the BLACK lead onto pin 1 and the RED lead onto pin 3 of the transformer. The meter should read

38VDC +/-10%. See figure 45.

To test the heat/massage external transformer:

When the heat/massage external transformer is plugged into the wall outlet, the green power light will be on. The redlow battery light will flash when no batteries are in the transformer, or when battery power is low.

If the reading is not 38VDC +/-10%, replace the electronics assembly/transformer.

The meter reads_________volts.

If the reading is not 38VDC +/-10%, replace the electronics assembly/transformer.

Examine the power cord from the control box to the wall outlet for crimps, cuts, or cracks. If the CORD is damaged, replace the cord or the external transformer.

If the lift chair is plugged in and the lift or recline functions are not operational, check the following steps toidentify the problem.

1. Examine the physical appearance of the motor. Unplug the power cord and flip the chair onto its side or back.Check the bottom clevis (rear motor connection at the base of the lift frame) for breaks. If the clevis is notbroken, check the top connection of the motor shaft to the upper portion of the frame. Make sure that the pin isattached firmly.

If this reading is outside tolerance, replace the motor.

The meter reads_________ohms

2. Examine the stroke tube for cracks and breaks.

Replace the motor if the clevis is worn, cracked, or broken.

If damaged or broken, replace the motor.

3. Return the chair to the upright position, plug into wall outlet, and listen for clicking or humming noises comingfrom the control box.

4. Unplug the chair from the power source and disconnect the 2-pin motor plug from the control box or Y-cable.Take an ohm reading across the two pins of the plug. With the meter set to a minimum scale of 2 Megaohms, put the BLACK lead on the blade prong of the plug and the RED lead on the small circular pin. The readingshould indicate approximately 1.2 Megaohms or higher in this direction and zero ohms with the leads reversed.See figure 48.

The TMR 540 dual motor system may be malfunctioning because themotors are out of time.

1. Unplug one of the motors from the control box.2. Disconnect the stroke tube from the top of the frame.3. With the hand control, run the connected motor up or down until

the heavy weight pivot bar is parallel with the lift frame.4. Now, disconnect the remaining motor from the control box and re-

connect the motor that was removed in step 1.5. With the hand control, run that motor to where it will hook back up

with the top of the frame.6. Plug both motors back into the control box and test.7. If the motors do not stay in time, replace the motor assembly.

Dual motor systems (models GL545, GL555) may be malfunctioningbecause the motors are out of time.

1. Activate the hand control on the lift chair. If there is no movementin either direction, check if the motors are out of sync and that thepressure-sensitive safety switch has been activated. Out-of-sync mo-tors will show one motor extended farther than the other and apinched safety switch. See figure 52.

2. If the motors are out of sync, disconnect one of the two red safetyswitch plugs from the motor control box. See figure 53.

3. Press the hand control in the UP position until the chair reaches thefull lift position. This will reset the motor position and correct thetiming. See figure 54.
