Can You Imagine a World Without Enough Technicians? Shortly after Walter P. Chrysler and the Dodge brothers started rolling cars and trucks down assembly lines, there was a need for qualified Automotive Service Technicians – then simply referred to as “mechanics” – to keep America growing and moving on four wheels, preferably in Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep® and Ram vehicles.

Today, Technicians continue their important role by providing peace of mind for customers who know that if their vehicles need service or have an issue, their dealership’s Technicians are prepared.

These men and women also generate significant revenue and play a key role in keeping customers satisfied and coming back. With all that they do, can you imagine a world without enough Technicians to meet the needs of our customers?

Surprisingly we are facing this exact scenario now. Sales have been strong and if demand for new vehicle sales continue, our five year forecast projects a demand for over 5,000 additional Technicians to meet service and repair demands.

So, if you’re having trouble finding a Technician today, it will likely get worse in the years to follow – but there are solutions.

Anticipating the increased need for qualified Service Technicians, FCA Performance Institute has developed a suite of strategic recruiting and hiring programs. Starting with existing initiatives like the CareerBuilder Dealer Hiring Program and the longstanding Mopar® Career Automotive Program (Mopar CAP) we have added two new programs – the Mopar CAP LOCAL Program and the New Hire Technical Training Warranty Exemption Program – which together add greater flexibility to meet your needs.

While these are all important and effective efforts, it’s up to you to take advantage of these programs and be proactive in their implementation. This Dealer Kit includes the details, resources and tools to fully utilize each of these programs and to help you put a plan in place that ultimately improves your Technician-hiring practices.

This guide includes the details to fully utilize the programs offered by FCA to improve Technician hiring performance in your dealership.

Today’s Technicians are the lifeblood of after sales departments, generating significant revenue and keeping customers coming back. Spend the time necessary to recruit and grow the best team possible.

Programs to Help Improve Technician-Hiring Performance At-a-Glance

These four programs provide strategic support specifically to help you in your hiring efforts. They feature a variety of tools to engage, train and retain qualified Technicians that can be applied to meet your needs.

1. Mopar Career Automotive Program (Mopar CAP) – The original program has served the needs of dealers nationwide with a FCA-focused curriculum designed to thoroughly train Technicians. If you are not involved, and are experiencing difficulty in finding new Technicians, Mopar CAP is the place to grow your own Technicians.

2. Mopar Career Automotive Program LOCAL [NEW] – This hybrid program is designed for dealers who don’t have access to a nearby Mopar CAP school. It provides a basic curriculum that a local college or technical institution can easily integrate into their offerings. Like Mopar CAP, CAP LOCAL has no dealer enrollment fees and is a great way to establish your dealership as an organization that cares about its employees and the quality of their work through training and support.

3. New Hire Technical Training Warranty Exemption Program [NEW] – To recruit experienced Technicians from competitive sources (LOF techs, private fleets, etc.), FCA Performance Institute offers this program which allows Technicians to start earning immediately with a plan to complete training within a specified period of time.

4. CareerBuilder FCA New Hire Program – This unique partnership allows FCA dealers to access a special online job board that is dedicated to CJDR and FIAT dealers. You can post job announcements or review resumes of potential new Technicians.

Mopar® Career Automotive Program (Mopar CAP)Increasingly Complex Automotive Landscape Demands Knowledgeable Technicians – Mopar CAP is one AnswerThere was a time when the job of a mechanic may have been misperceived as a low skill, low pay, dead-end job spent in dark garages with a less-than-promising career outlook.

The image of today’s professional couldn’t be more different. Technicians are highly trained, well paid and are responsible to work on the advanced technology systems built into all of our cars and trucks.

High tech systems – many unheard of as few as 15 years ago – like stability and traction control, web-based infotainment, GPS, adaptive cruise control, stop-start engine technology, plus hybrid and electric vehicle configurations – to name just a few – are what Technicians face daily.

Technicians routinely use sophisticated, computerized diagnostic equipment combined with years of experience and training to solve complex problems on impressively engineered components. Of course, mechanical knowhow is also required to meet the ever changing service and repair needs of our vehicles.

Mopar CAP – Training for Today’s TechnicianWith advancing technology comes advanced skill requirements for Technicians and Mopar CAP is ready to meet their needs. For the past 30 years, Mopar CAP has helped dealership managers build and retain the best team of Technicians possible. With a proven track record of growing quality Technicians over time, this is a program designed to ensure quality Technicians for today and for the future.

Grow Your OwnMopar CAP is unique because it offers a systemic process to grow your own Technicians, custom-fitted to your needs, instead of the conventional hiring approach taken by many managers.

Today’s Automotive Technicians require advanced technical skills and knowledge.

Grow Techs with Mopar CAP

• Identify promising Technician candidate

• Grow through Level 2 and enjoy low turnover

• Repeat as needed

Conventional Hiring Approach

• Recruit Technician from other dealer

• Lose other Technician to another dealer

• Repeat because you think you have no option

If you’re not using Mopar CAP, you are missing an opportunity to add a factory-trained Technician to your staff. It’s time to stop the revolving door and start growing your own Technicians. Mopar CAP is one solution.

GET TO WORKUpon completion, Technician can be Level 2 certified plus knows your processes

WORK-STUDYStudent alternates between classes and working at your dealership with a mentor

Real-World FCA-Based CurriculumMopar® CAP is a winning program for many reasons. First, technical schools receive a FCA-based curriculum and benefit from the prestige of partnering with a major automaker that is dedicated to increasing automotive technical knowledge and expertise. This dedication includes significant investment in equipment for each school to use with students.

Second, students train on FCA products and equipment, providing experience on the right equipment and vehicles to make the transition to your dealership seamless.

Finally, future Technicians benefit from having access to courses that are based on real-world parameters. In the end, dealers gain the greatest benefit filling their shops with well-trained Technicians – all from a program that has no dealer enrollment fees.

Classroom and On-The-Job Training This program is best suited to dealers who are relatively close to an existing Mopar CAP School. Technicians attend school and work in your dealership further refining their knowledge of FCA products and learning your unique processes. By

completion, the Technician is ready to work at your dealership.

Students follow a FCA core curriculum that takes the student through to Level 2 competency.

The work-study format provides adequate time on the job. Plus, mentoring from a senior Technician adds invaluable experience to aid the student transition from student to professional.

Simple Approach Yields Impressive ResultsMopar CAP features a simple yet effective work-study approach that leverages knowledge learned in the classroom with the opportunity to refine skills on the job. The result is a work-ready Technician who’s trained on FCA products and knows your processes.

If you don’t have access to a Mopar CAP school, go to the Mopar CAP LOCAL section of this guide to start a program near you.

Mopar® CAP Curriculum Each Mopar CAP school has a set curriculum designed and developed by FCA. The curriculum includes a variety of self-study CAP web-based and instructor-led courses. Depending upon the school and interest of the student, the Technician can earn a one-year certificate or a two-year associate’s degree.

Levels Leading to CertificationThe Mopar CAP curriculum covers three levels: 0, 1 and 2. The levels move from basic to more advanced automotive technology topics. Following this approach ensures that students develop a solid foundational knowledge prior to progressing to the next step.

Level 0Level 0 provides the basics that every Automotive Technician needs to know, including their role in the dealership, how to access TechCONNECT and use diagnostic scan tools, plus vehicle prep instruction and a comprehensive review of electrical systems. Level 0 courses are self-study web courses and include the following topics:

• The Role of the Service Technician

• Introduction to TechCONNECT

• Introduction to Scan Tools

• Flight Recording

• New Vehicle Preparation

• High Voltage Vehicle Safety and Awareness

• Connecting with the Customer

• Flashing an ECU

• Introduction to Electrical

Level 1 and Level 2Levels 1 and 2 add increasingly more complex courses covering a wide variety of semi-skilled to skilled automotive technology topics. The major categories are listed below.

• Engine Repair and Performance

• Automatic Transmission

• Driveline

• Chassis Systems

• Electrical and Body Systems

• A/C and Heating

• Diesel

Ready-to-Work TechniciansUpon completion of Level 2 training the Technician is qualified to handle a significant variety of customer pay and warranty work. Because they have worked with a mentor Technician in your shop while attending classes, they can begin to contribute to your bottom line immediately – no new-hire training required. Technicians are encouraged to continue their education through Level 3 – the highest level of technical training offered by FCA Performance Institute.

Studies have shown that a training program with a defined curriculum that can be completed within a short, manageable timeframe increases completion rate and student success on the job – Mopar CAP is such a program.

Read What One Dealer is Saying About Mopar® CAPPete Martino, Service ManagerArrigo DCJR - Sawgrass Florida

“They do all the legwork and we just interview the kids to find out if they’re compatible with our operation or not. They (the program) primarily take care of all the screening.”

“It’s great to start a young adult who has some vocational training in the CAP program. They attend for two years; now they’re certified to work on cars under warranties. You put them with a mentor, and he turns out to be someone who’s loyal because you gave him a chance in life.”

“I haven’t found anything that’s not valuable that they’re teaching. FCA provides many tools, transmissions and engines. It’s a class operation. I think they’ve even provided a few cars for the students to work on. I think they’ve got all the training aids they need.”

“There are no negatives about the program. It’s just a good deal, especially when they take the time to screen them (the students) and make sure they’re prequalified to be a Technician, instead of just someone who wants a job.”

FAQs – Mopar® CAPIs there a cost associated with Mopar CAP?There are no enrollment fees for CJDR dealers, but it is recommended that dealers offer tuition assistance. Dealers must also cover salaries for the time that Technician-students are working on skill-appropriate work.

What if there is not a Mopar CAP school near me?It is possible for some dealers to be located too far from an approved school. For this reason FCA has launched the Mopar CAP LOCAL program to assist you. See the Mopar CAP LOCAL section in the guide for more information on how to start a program near you.

How do I start? The best place to start is by contacting the Mopar CAP school near you. They can identify current students who need a dealership placement. The MoparCAP.com website maintains an updated list of all schools. If you have questions they cannot answer, submit your inquiry via “contact us” at MoparCAP.com.

Where do I find student candidates? There are a number of sources to identify student candidates. You can sponsor a current employee who shows promise. Other sources include recent high school graduates or possibly family members of current employees. Recruitment is an important part of the process, so you should assign a dealership manager to lead the recruitment efforts. See the Recruiting and Promotion section of this guide for help in recruiting.

Is the mentor Technician required? No, it is not required, but we highly recommend assigning a mentor Technician to work with the student. The mentor plays an important role to acclimate the student to your dealership procedures and processes. A mentor is a very useful way to welcome and support new employees, contributing to employee retention.

Which program should I use to get the best performance? Each program has great value to dealerships seeking solutions to Technician hiring. FCA Performance Institute offers a suite of programs to help you custom fit a solution to your individual needs. It’s up to you which program is best for your circumstances.

IF APPROVED, IN-DEPTH ASSESSMENT IS CONDUCTED

SCHOOL COMPLETES SURVEY AND RESULTS ARE REVIEWED

DEALER MEETS WITH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR AND PROVIDES SURVEY FOR COMPLETION

Mopar® Career Automotive Program LOCAL Announcing a New Option for Dealers Seeking Local Technician Training We are proud to announce the expansion of our popular Mopar CAP initiative with the Mopar Career Automotive Program LOCAL version. Designed for dealers who do not have access to an existing approved school, Mopar CAP LOCAL provides a method to recruit and train future Technicians using the FCA technical curriculum in a format that is similar to Mopar CAP.

Partnering with Local Schools – Dealer’s ChoiceMopar CAP LOCAL provides the curriculum; the dealer (or group of dealers) chooses the school. Note: The school must meet specific standards. See below for more details. This provides a way for the dealer to establish the best fit possible with a school that is within close proximity. There are promotional tools provided in this kit to help you approach and review the LOCAL program with school administrators. FCA is also actively seeking out potential schools for use by dealers in the future. Check with Mopar CAP management when considering this option at [email protected].

Varied School Settings Provide Multiple OpportunitiesThere are a wide variety of schools with the potential to carry the Mopar CAP LOCAL format. These include local community colleges, technical colleges or vocational schools in your neighborhood. In some instances, high school automotive programs, provided in an adult education setting, may substitute for a college or technical school.

Must Meet Specific Standards While there are a wide variety of schools to choose from, they must meet specific standards to qualify for the Mopar CAP LOCAL program. Standards include criteria for facility and equipment suggestions.

Certificate or Associates Degree OptionsDepending upon the school and the program offered, the Mopar CAP LOCAL student may have the opportunity to earn a certificate or associate’s degree.

With this innovative program, you have a wide variety of educational venues to choose from. So, if you have always wanted to benefit from a program like Mopar CAP, now Mopar CAP LOCAL gives you an efficient and effective way to get there.

Included in this kit are promotional materials to review with school administrators. Go to the Recruiting and Promotion section of this guide for more details.

Mopar® CAP LOCAL Curriculum The Mopar CAP LOCAL curriculum is designed and developed by FCA Performance Institute to engage new Technicians and establish a base of knowledge needed to start a career in the field of automotive technology. The curriculum utilizes a self-study, web-based format that can be augmented with existing instructor-led courses available at the sponsoring school.

Training that Covers the Basics and MoreThe Mopar LOCAL CAP curriculum covers two levels: 0 and 1. The levels advance from basic to more advanced automotive technology topics. Following this approach ensures that students develop a solid foundational knowledge prior to progressing to the next step.

Level 0Level 0 provides the basics that every automotive Technician needs to know, including their role in the dealership, how to access TechCONNECT and use diagnostic scan tools, plus vehicle prep instruction and a comprehensive review of electrical systems. Level 0 courses are self-study web courses and include the following topics:

• The Role of the Service Technician

• Introduction to TechCONNECT

• Introduction to Scan Tools

• Flight Recording

• New Vehicle Preparation

• High Voltage Vehicle Safety and Awareness

• Connecting with the Customer

• Flashing an ECU

• Introduction to Electrical

Level 1Level 1 adds increasingly more complex courses covering a wide variety of semi-skilled to skilled automotive technology topics. The major categories are listed below.

• Engine Repair and Performance

• Automatic Transmission

• Driveline

• Chassis Systems

• Electrical and Body Systems

• A/C and Heating

• Diesel

NOTE: Curriculum details have been provided in your Dealer Kit.

Ready-to-Work Technicians Upon CompletionUpon completion of training, Technicians are qualified to handle a significant variety of customer pay and warranty work. Because they have worked with a mentor Technician in your shop while attending classes, they are ready to get to work immediately contributing to your bottom line. Technicians are encouraged to continue their education through FCA Performance Institute.

Studies have shown that a training program with a defined curriculum that can be completed within a short, manageable timeframe increases completion rate and student success on the job – Mopar CAP LOCAL is such a program.

Web-Based Courses Provide Flexibility and Targeted InstructionMopar® CAP LOCAL curriculum employs extensive use of web-based courses. These allow the student to review and complete courses remotely and – with the support of an instructor – identify key concepts required to become a successful FCA dealer Technician.

21

Identifying Local Schools The Mopar® CAP LOCAL program is ideal for a local college or technical school (if they meet specific standards). The curriculum is flexible and can be incorporated into existing local schools.

Look for schools within close proximity to your dealership. A school with an existing automotive technology program is an ideal setting to add the Mopar CAP LOCAL program because of existing equipment and faculty.

• Community colleges – There are over 1,600 community colleges in the United States. One may present an opportunity in your area. Community colleges often have an existing automotive program that can easily integrate the Mopar CAP LOCAL curriculum saving additional investment

• Technical schools – Technical schools can also provide a good opportunity to launch a Mopar CAP LOCAL program. These schools draw students who are interested in engineering and science-related curriculums

• Vocational schools – Offered by local high schools, this is also a potential opportunity. Schools must offer an adult education model and meet NATEF standards.

Experienced instructors share knowledge with the next generation of Technicians in a community college setting.

The Pre-Assessment Survey starting on the next page is required for any school interested in becoming a Mopar CAP LOCAL provider.

FAQs – Mopar® CAP LOCALIs there a cost associated with Mopar CAP LOCAL?There are no enrollment fees for FCA dealers, but it is recommended that dealers offer tuition assistance for students. Dealers must also cover salaries for the time that Technician-students are working on skill-appropriate work.

Is the mentor Technician required? No, it is not required, but we highly recommend assigning a mentor Technician to work with the student. The mentor plays an important role to acclimate the student to your dealership procedures and processes. A mentor is a very useful way to welcome and support new employees, contributing to employee retention.

How do you determine if a school meets Mopar CAP LOCAL standards?Potential Mopar CAP LOCAL schools must meet a specific set of standards. After an initial survey that the dealer requests from the school administrator, an in-depth assessment is conducted if the school is approved to move forward. How long it takes for a school to become certified depends on the assessment and what the school needs to do to meet those standards.

What is the best way to approach a local school? We have found that schools of all kinds have been very receptive to the Mopar CAP program. It enhances their reputation with support from a major automaker. Start by identifying the administrators of an existing automotive technology program and set up an initial contact (meeting, phone call). We have provided promotional materials to use with schools in this dealer kit.

Is there one type of local school that is better than another to approach? The best school is one with an existing automotive program that is willing to expand its course offerings to include Mopar CAP LOCAL.

DEFINE THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

Recruiting and Promotion (Students and Schools)Steps to Successful RecruitingMopar® CAP offers an excellent way to grow Technicians, but it’s up to you to start the process by recruiting potential students. This is an important effort, because the better the candidate selected, the better the long-term result. Managers should be consistently recruiting from multiple sources to ensure a steady stream of candidates. Follow the suggestions in this section to implement a recruiting plan.

36

Success Depends on Getting Good Candidates The profile of a future Technician has many of the same qualities that you see in successful Technicians today. When looking for candidates, keep these qualities in mind.

• Mechanical aptitude – Walter P. Chrysler started as a mechanic and attributed his success to his love of working with mechanical things. Look for someone who is passionate about cars and trucks and is driven to know how they work

• Hard worker – Being a Technician is hard work. You must use both your mind and your body to get the job done right. Look for candidates who don’t shy away from the harder parts of the job and can demonstrate a history of success at their current level

• Tenacious – Diagnosing a vehicle problem isn’t always easy or obvious. It takes time and dedication to seek out the cause of a problem. This is an important quality in any successful Technician

• Winning attitude – Attitude is everything in work and in life. You’ll know when you see it

Look for candidates who “Bring Their A Game” – Great Attitude and Aptitude

Leverage Mopar® CAP Website with Digitally Savvy Student AudienceFCA promotes the program on a national level through the MoparCAP.com website and can be a good tool to point out to potential students. Honing Your Message – A Good Deal for Dealers and Students Clearly Mopar® CAP provides benefits to dealers, but there are many for students, too. When talking to recruits, and possibly their parents, point out the value and potential of the Mopar CAP program – particularly on the primary benefits surrounding low cost and career potential.

Student Debt Continues to Climb, While a College Degree Doesn’t Automatically Ensure SuccessIt’s no secret that many college graduates today are saddled with high student loan debt and, if their degree is not in demand, they may experience unemployment or underemployment – forced to accept jobs that are out of their field of study.

In the long run having a college degree is a good thing, assuming that you work in an area that pays well and is hiring. But it’s not the only option. A program like Mopar CAP provides a firm foundation and real-world experience upon which to build a successful career in automotive technology without the added expense of a four-year degree.

Automotive Technology a Growing FieldIt’s important that prospective Mopar CAP students understand

that automotive technology is a growing field and demand for trained Technicians has no end in sight. Over the next five years, we forecast the need for over 5,000 Technician positions available nationwide. Plus, it’s a job that can never be outsourced to cheaper labor in other countries.

Value the Mopar CAP WayAccording to the Wall Street Journal, the class of 2014 is the most indebted class ever – with an average of $33,000 per student – and promises to increase for next year’s class. For some, this debt makes sense – assuming you can land a good paying job in a growing, in-demand field. For many others, that kind of debt does not make long-term sense.

In today’s economy, what a student studies ultimately matters a lot more than how long he or she studies it.

Primary Benefits At-a-Glance• Affordable, less of a need for massive student loans

• Trained Technicians are in demand NOW!

• Automotive technology is a growing field with significant future potential

• Potential career growth into service management

• Work with advanced technology

• Job cannot be outsourced to another country
