Halftone Process 1870Halftone was first printed in 1871 in Canadian Illustrated News PrintsHalftone was printed in American newspapers in 1880Photographs are made up of a continuous tone of colorThe Halftone process prints dots of various sizes to create different tones and shadows. The picture to the right shows how an area of continuous tone would be displayed in halftone. Allowed for photojournalists to have their images published in newspapers.

Roll Film 1888Invented by George Eastman. It was actually a camera that was sold with film within the camera. The film consisted of 100 exposures and when all 100 exposures had been used, the camera was sent back to the company where they developed it and then sent it back to the customer.Eastman had said You press the button, we do the rest. Roll film allowed for photojournalists to take more than one picture before having to develop them.

Graflex Camera 1914Graflex is the combination of the words graphic and reflex.Includes a mechanically moving curtain to allow a brief period of light exposure to the film. This became known at the focal-plane shutter.Focal-plane shutters continue to be used today. Allowed photojournalists to keep up with increasingly light sensitive film.

35mm Color Film 1936 Color photographs were possible before color film but the process was lengthy and involved dangerous chemicals.Color film sped up the developing process and made it easier for photojournalists to get their color photographs in hand. Color film was referred to as KodachromeThe image to the right shows the different layers of color film resulting in the multitude of colors seen in a color photograph.

Changing the coloring of photos, adding elements to photos, cropping photos and many other things.Allowed photojournalists to edit their photographs the way they wanted too.Photojournalists no longer had to leave the editing of their photographs up to the discretion of someone else.
