1Important FactsAfter the establishment of the People's Republic in 1949, China reorganized its science establishment along Soviet lines

From 1975, science and technology was one of the Four Modernizations

Declared essential by Deng Xiaoping

General Electric outlined plans to invest more than $2 billion through 2012 on China ventures focused on research and development, technology and financial services.

Rail Trains

WuGuang: worlds fastest train (245 mph)

A 969-kilometer line from Wuhan to Guangzhou

Cuts travel time from 10.5 to 3 hours

Technology used to make train similar to Japan and Germanys.

Enviro-friendly

Saves resources

Over the next five years there'll be more high-speed rail added in China than the rest of the world combined

3Internet

More users each year

Most users are company members

China censors Internet

Internet companies must go through censorship terms

In 2003, China became the third country capable of sending people into space.

China is able to send out space probes, shuttles, and satellites

In 2020, China plans to build a space station

7Cloned Pigs

With a population projected to grow to 1.44 billion by 2030 from 1.33 billion in 2009, according to World Bank figures, Beijing is hunting for cutting-edge technology to provide better quality food so they clone pigs."With this technology, we can import small numbers of pigs and mass produce them in China."

8Nuclear Technology

France announced it will sell $22.8 billion of uranium to China.

The deal expands on 30 years of nuclear cooperation between China and France, which gets about three-quarters of its electricity from nuclear power and has deep knowledge of the field.

France's Areva nuclear engineering firm said it would sell China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corp. 20,000 tons of uranium over a decade.

France will give more than 100 Airbus planes to China.

These models are A320, A330, A350 model10Rare Earth Elements

China now produces 90% all of the world's supply of rare earths, which are crucial for a wide range of technologies, including hard drives, solar panels, and motors for hybrid vehicles.

Rare earths are comprised of 17 elements, such as terbium, which is used to make green phosphors for flat-panel TVs, lasers, and high-efficiency fluorescent lamps.

Neodymium is key to the permanent magnets used to make high-efficiency electric motors.
