• Kentucky is 46th in nation for broadband
• 23% of rural population has no access vs 1.5% of urban areas
• Only 30% eastern Ky households adopt broadband
• High speed internet by itself probably will not bring business to Ky, but it will level the playing field
• No incentive to bring Internet to underserved/unserved communities
The Current State
• “Middle Mile” project between worldwide internet and the “Last Mile”• Last mile = connects homes and businesses to the “Middle Mile”• Last mile happens via Internet Service Providers (Windstream,
TimeWarner, AT&T, etc.)
• All 120 counties
• 3000 miles of fiber optic cable
• Public/private partnership with Macquarie Capital
• $300 million project
• $50 million state bonds & government grants, remainder private investment
• Approx. 250 priority locations (including all of KCTCS)
• Eastern Ky is first stage
