Admission at NITUK 2014
A total of 281 students were admitted to the institute through the CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) between August 9th-13th, 2014.

Independence Day Celebration
15 August, 2014 marked the 68th anniversary of the Indian
Independence Day and was heartily celebrated by NIT
Uttarakhand. The event was inaugurated with the flag
hoisting ceremony and a choir performance of the National
Anthem.
The Director of the Institute, Prof. H. T. Thorat, in his
speech encouraged students to put their sincerest effort in
their respective fields in order to reach the pinnacle of
success and thereby take the country to unimaginable
heights.
The ceremony ended with the distribution of sweets and the
remembrance of those who have sacrificed their lives to the
cause of the nation.
Induction Program for Newly Admitted Students
The Institute organized an Induction Program for the first year B.Tech students to
familiarize the newly admitted students with the rules, regulations, academic structure, and
facilities of the Institute. The Program was attended by the newly admitted first year
students, parents, the deans, wardens, other faculty members, and the Vice President of
the Students’ Council.
The Director of the Institute, Prof. H.T. Thorat, initiated the Program by introducing the
newcomers to the freshmen, the team of deans, wardens, faculty and staff members
present on the occasion. In his presentation Hon’ble Director elaborately explained the
course and credit structure, facilities offered by the Institute, the future plans of the
Institute, and the expectations from the freshmen and briefed them about many other
aspects in a two hour long, almost all encompassing presentation.
Thereafter, the Vice President of the Council of Student Activities (CSA), Chandramauli
Singh, was invited on stage to welcome the freshmen on behalf of the senior students. The
Vice President of the CSA shared his experience at NITUK, encouraged the incoming
students to be pro-active, and encouraged them to thoroughly explore and utilize all the
facilities offered by the Institute.
Further, Dr. Ajay K. Chaubey, Associate Dean (Student Welfare) spoke about the existing
clubs and scope of co-curricular activities at the Institute. Dr. Kuldeep Sharma, Warden,
Boys’ Hostels, elaborated upon the Hostel facilities and accommodation at the Institute. Dr.
Renu B. Dangwal, Chairperson, Women’s Cell, sensitized the audience about the existence of
structures ensuring women’s security on campus and encouraged girls to actively report
matters of harassment meted out to them by anyone.
The Induction Program was rounded off by Dr. A.S. Dhundi, Dean (Academics) who ended
the proceedings with a tone of gratitude to the audience and wished the freshers the best
for their future endeavors.
Open Forum
The Institute reopened after the summer vacations on Thursday, 31st July. The same
evening, as is the custom at NIT Uttarakhand, an Open Forum was held in the Institute
Auditorium, where the Director talked about the facilities being offered by the
Institute, mentioned about the changes that happened in the recent past, introduced new
members of the faculty to students and also, interacted directly with students to know
about their problems and issues. Students of second, third, and fourth years attended
the Open Forum.
The Heads of Departments introduced the new faculty members of their respective
departments to the students. The Director also advised students to appreciate and
explore more and more open source operating systems and software because there is no
need to purchase license for open source wares. The students’ representative, the Vice
President of the CSA, raised some issues regarding academics, training and placement,
and facilities provided to students and made this interaction fruitful.
Expert Lectures at NITUK
Expert lectures on “Ethics in Teaching: An Attempt to Initiate Discussion” by
Prof. T. C. Kandpal, Professor, Centre for Energy Studies, IIT Delhi and “Use
of Tablet as Teaching Aid” by Prof. R. B. Deshmukh, Professor, Department
of Electronics Engineering, VNIT Nagpur were conducted on 9th August, 2014
at NIT, Uttarakhand. Prof. Kandpal recalled the qualities of his favorite
teachers, methods of transfer of knowledge to the students, ethics that a
teacher should follow, and the concept of morality. Further, he emphasized
upon having friendly relations with the students in today’s stressful
environment. Prof. Deshmukh delivered a lecture on use of tablet in teaching.
He also emphasized upon various teaching methodologies such as the use of
computer graphics, videos for the demonstration of concepts, use of power
point presentations, and use of internet to compliment and aid the learning
process. Faculty members were greatly benefited from these lectures and
vouched to incorporate the learned lessons in their teaching pedagogies.
Workshop on Open Source Software
An educational workshop on “Open Source Software - IT for you” was organised on 2nd
August, 2014 in NIT Uttarakhand at Srinagar, Garhwal. This workshop was arranged
under the Spoken Tutorial Project initiated by Ministry of Human Resource
Development, Govt. of India and executed by IIT Bombay. In this workshop, Ms.
Shyama Iyer and Ms. Akanksha Saini, experts from IIT Bombay, delivered lectures on
the use of non-commercial software. These software mainly contribute towards value
addition to class room teaching and training. In coming days, the students having the
knowledge of and expertise in these software will have very brighter job prospects.
About 400 students and 50 faculty members of NIT Uttarakhand participated in this
workshop. In next 15 days, NIT Uttarakhand will have liaisoning with IIT Bombay for
Spoken Tutorials, under this project. Mr. Krishan Kumar Assistance Professor in CSE and
Mr. Nitin Kumar HOD CSE and other faculty member of CSE department of NIT
Uttarakhand took special efforts to make the workshop a success.
News from the Training and Placement Cell
Amazon.com conducted an online test on 4th August 2014 for internship. 34 students
from Computer Science and Electronics department appeared for this test.
MU-Sigma conducted an online test on 8th August 2014 for recruitment and the
company shortlisted 26 students from the different engineering branch for interview.
NSE (National Stock Exchange) Infotech Services Limited, Mumbai conducted the
placement interviews in NIT Uttarakhand and has recruited three final year students,
Shubham Goel, Rajat Goyal and Shyam Choudhary.
BOG Meeting
The Sixth Board of Governance Meeting was held on 18th July 2014 at New Delhi. The meeting was attended by Mr. Bhaskar Bhat, Chairman,

meeting covered important issues like Approval of annual report 2013-2014, Constitution of special cell, Record Retention Scheme (RRS),
Nomination of Heads of the department, Deans and Associates Deans on senate, formats of Annual performance assessment report (APAR),
Approval for Institute Memento as Brahma Kamal and Chief Guest for first convocation of the Institute.

The fifth Finance Committee Meeting was held on 18th July 2014 at New Delhi. The meeting was attended by Mr. Bhaskar Bhat, Chairman,

attended the meeting as special invitees. The meeting covered important agendas regarding Annual accounts 2013-2014, Allocation of fund in
Budget head-Construction at temporary campus, Scheme of Student Medical Aid Fund (SMAF), B.Tech. fee structure for the year 2014-
2015 and Up-gradation of Institute fee account to online fee collection mode.
