TechnoSAVVY Eighth Newsletter NATIONAL Institute of Technology, Uttarakhand Vol:8, Issue: MARCH 2014 Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony The Fondation Stone laying ceremony of National Institute of Technology Uttarakhand was held at Sumari, a village 22 kms away from Srinagar, Garhwal on the 19th February 2014 where the permanent campus of the Institute will be built extending over 300 acres of land. The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Shri Harish Rawat was the Chief Guest for the same. Satpal Maharaj, MP Pauri Garhwal, Harak Singh Rawat, Cabinet Minister of the Government of Uttarakhand, Ganesh Godiyal, MLA Srinagar, Garhwal presided over the session. Prof. V.K. Singh, Vice-Chancellor, HNB University, Dr. M.C. Pant, Vice-Chancellor, Uttarakhand Medical University, Dr. V.L. Jahangirdar, Principal, Medical College, Srinagar, Mr. Rajesh Arora, GM, NBCC also graced the occasion. The Director of NIT Uttarakhand, Dr. H.T. Thorat emphasized upon the self-sufficiency of the new campus in terms of electricity and water supply. Further, he highlighted that the construction of the boundary wall for the new campus will be started within 15 days of the inauguration of the foundation stone. The model of the institute campus has been prepared and the plan is to set up an eco-friendly campus soon. He congratulated the institute for making its proposed campus eco- friendly. The CM also expressed his gratitude to the people of Sumari and nearby villages for providing the land for the institute. Shri Rawat said that it is important to consider the connectivity constraint of the mountains if development is to be planned. NITUK Celebrates Institute Gathering The Institute Gathering, “Sparks”, was organized at NIT Uttarakhand between February 17th to 23rd, 2014. The institute gathering is an interdepartmental competition in which students from various branches participated in various events. The ceremony was inaugurated by Hon'ble Director of NIT UK, Prof. H.T. Thorat. The fun-filled week was full of competitions and the students enthusiastically participated and cheered for their respective branches. The event came to an end on February 23rd with the Electronics and Communication Engineering finishing at the top position while the Mechanical and Civil Engineering occupying the runners up position. The Institute Gathering provided a wonderful platform for the students to showcase their talents and helped to foster a sense of fellow-feeling and brotherhood among the studentsurged the students to maintain enthusiasm throughout the competition. The competition consisted of varied events namely, singing, dancing, sports events, debate, extempore, poetry, collage-making, stand-up comedy. NITUK Celebrated Women's Day with Great Fervour Organizing a one-day symposium on “Emancipation of Women” NIT, Uttarakhand celebrated the International Women's Day on 8 th March with great enthusiasm. Prof. Surekha Dangwal from H.N.B.Garhwal University, Srinagar, Garhwal and Dr. Chitra Joshi, Gynaecologist in VCSG Govt. Medical Sciences & Research Institute, Srinagar Garhwal were the chief guests for the programme. In their speech, both the guest speakers emphasized the importance of negating parochial thinking and raised the issue of the equality and security of women. Dr. Renu Bhadola Dangwal, Assistant Professor, Dept. Of Sciences & Humanities coordinated the programme. Dr. Saroj Ranjan De, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Sciences & Humanities and Dean Academics, presided over the programme. The teaching and the administrative staff members actively participated in the celebration of the Women's Day. Students showed their gusto in the programme with their poems, speeches and group songs etc. The programme was concluded by Dr. Ajay K. Chaubey, Assistant Professor, Dept. Of Sciences and Humanities, with his vote of thanks. DASA Admissions Meeting Dr. Saroj Ranjan De, Associate Dean (Academics) attended the DASA Admissions Meeting at NITK, Surathkal on March 14 th , 2014. The admission procedure of foreign students were discussed at the meeting.

Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony

DASA Admissions Meeting

Dr. Saroj Ranjan De, Associate Dean (Academics) attended the DASA Admissions Meeting at NITK, Surathkal on March 14th , 2014. The admission procedure of foreign students were discussed at the meeting.

World Quant conducted conducted an online test in campus on

February 23rd, 2014. Around 70 students appeared for the test for

Internship which was attended by 3rd

year Computer Science and

Engineering students.

Suncore Microsystems visited the institute on 7th

March, 2014 and

conducted their recruitment drive. Spectrum Planning Services (SPS)

visited our Campus on 8th

March, 2014 and completed their

recruitment process through various rounds like written test, group

discussion and Personal Interview. The drive resulted to the placement

of: Mr. Ujjwal Singh, Mr. Shubham Sinha, Mr. Rajesh Gupta, Md.

Azeem, Pankaj Kumar, Mr. Ankit Agarwal.

Mr. Apurba Mandal, Faculty Incharge Training and Placement Cell,

Mr. Chandramauli Singh, Mr. Ravish Pillai, and Mr. Sumit Dobhal

visited MNIT Jaipur for collaborating with the Recruitment Cell of the

institute.

Training Programme on Preventing Sexual Harassment at

Workplace

NIT, Uttarakhand has avowed to say big No to sexual harassment of women

following the government Act in this regard. To meet this purpose and

strengthen this policy, Dr. Renu Bhadola Dangwal, Assistant Professor, Dept.

of Sciences & Humanities and Dr. Gareema Sanaman, Assistant Librarian

attended a 2-Days' residential training programme on “Sexual Harassment of

Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013”

organized by the Institute of Public Administration in Bengaluru from 24 to

25 February 2014. In the training programme they were informed about the

ways such harassment cases occur at workplaces and the existing

constitutional safeguards to prevent such incidents. The chief speaker, Dr.

H.S. Rana discussed and elaborated the Act on Sexual Harassment, explaining

all the terms like 'aggrieved women', ' sexual harassment', 'employee', etc. The

most important part of the programme was how to constitute the Internal

Complaint Committee, how enquiry should be conducted by the members of

the Committee, and what are the important measures to be taken in such

enquiries. The organizers supplied all the participants a Manual Book (Act)

and other study materials containing the detailed history of the Act and past

cases of sexual harassment.

NITUK organizes Photography Workshop

NITUK organized a Photography Workshop under the direction of photography

expert Mr. Threesh Kapoor between 27th

February and March 2nd

, 2014. The

event was coordinated by Ms. Ghanapriya Singh, Assistant Professor, Dept. Of

Electronics. The workshop was inaugurated on Thursday, the 27th

Feb’ 14 by

Hon’ble Director, Prof. H.T. Thorat. The next day participants were taken to

Ganga Darshan spot where they clicked some scenic snaps of the rising sun. "An

open mind and calm hands are essentially needed to portrait nature's beauty into

a photograph” said Threesh Kapoor enthusiastically to inspire the young minds.

Later on, Mr. Kapoor also lectured on types of lenses, the camera body, their

protection, and their usage to capture the unique moments. On their trip to Khirsu

and Pauri, participants were guided to think open-mindedly and encouraged to

capture every possible glance of nature. Finally, 55 best photographs, which

represented the effort of the committed photographers of the institute, were

assembled after an explicit analysis. The workshop ended with an emphasis by

the expert on continuous and sincere practice.

Faculty Members attend 2nd

World Summit of

Accreditation

The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) organized the 2nd world summit

on Accreditation (WOSA - 2014) from 8th-10th

March 2014 at Hotel

Ashoka, New Delhi. The theme of this summit was “International

Recognition of Education Qualifications, International Recognition of

Professional Qualifications, Harmonization in Accreditation Practices,

Bridging Academia and Industry, Outcome Assessment Tools, Role of

Government and Public Policy in Accreditation”. The Key Speakers included

persons of eminence from India (IITs, and Ministry of Human Resources),

and abroad (Dr. Kai Sang Lock, Engineering Accreditation Board, Institute of

Engineers, Singapore, Prof. Krishna S. Dhir, University of Hawaii, U.S.A.

Prof. Jeffrey W Fergus, Auburn University, USA, and Prof. Martin Henson,

University of Essex). The summit was expected to strengthen India’s on-

going negotiations with the Washington Accord to acquire full signatory

status to help the engineering students and professionals of India to have a

global recognition. For a newly established institute like NIT Uttarakhand,

the accreditation program provided the necessary exposure to faculty

members for meeting the quality standard and designing outcome based

course content for B.Tech students.

Prof. Durga Toshiwal, Associate Prof, Dept. of Computer Science and

Engineering, IIT Roorkee, delivered a lecture on “Information Retrieval” on

20th

and 21st

of February, 2014.

Prof. R.K. Agarwal, Professor of Computer and System Science, JNU, Delhi,

gave a lecture on “Theory of Computation” on 2nd

and 3rd

March, 2014.

National Network Security Championship (NNSC) was conducted on 15th-

16th Feb, 2014 at NIT UK. In this workshop students were imparted

practical knowledge regarding networks, softwares etc. Overall it was quite

an informative and quintessential practical workshop.

Faculty Achievements

NITUK is proud to announce that Dr. Ajay K. Chaubey’s per-eminent work, VS

Naipaul: An anthology of 21st century criticism is being published by Atlantic

publications and Distributors, New Delhi.
