D.O. Bierzo
HistoryThe first written reference to the Bierzo region, whose name derives
from the pre-Roman city of Bergidum, is from Pliny the Elder.
The Romans developed agriculture, introduced new crops including
Vitis vinifera vines, and new technology such as the Roman plough.
However, the greatest expansion of viticulture was related to the
growth of the monasteries, especially the Cistercian order, during
the Middle Ages. After centuries of production and after having
achieved a good reputation in the markets of Galicia and Asturias,
the Bierzo vineyards suffered a terrible blow in the 19th century
when the phylloxera plague practically wiped them out.
There was a severe economic crisis which forced many people
to emigrate. Production was slowly re-established thanks to the
technique of grafting onto new world rootstocks and wine
production gradually recovered to assume the significant
economic role it had played in the past. In 1989 the
Bierzo Denominación de Origen was officially recognised.
Grape varietiesThe wines produced under the Bierzo DO must be made only
with the varieties that are authorised by the Consejo Regulador
(Regulatory Council).
Red grapes: Mencia, Garnacha Tintorera,
(experimental: Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon)
White grapes: Doña Blanca, Godello, Palomino,
(experimental: Malvasía, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer)
The experimental varieties can only be used for crianza and
reserva wines, and may not comprise more than 15%.

HistoryFounded in 1975, our Bodega is located in Villadecanes, a village
situated in the geographical heart of the “Bierzo” European Protected
Designation of Origin, to which it belongs from its foundation.
El Bierzo, a natural region of Castilla y León, occupies the
north-western of the province of León and is considered one
of the optimal zones for the production of wine in the Iberian
Peninsula due to its climate conditions (Mediterranean microclimate
with softer temperatures that in the bordering zones ) as well
as for the peculiarities of its soils.
Our wines (Godellos whites and Mencías reds) are commercialized
exclusively under the “Viñadecanes” and “ Tres Racimos” brands.
La BodegaThe Bodega cultivates 28 Has. of the Mencía variety,
the autochthonous grape of our region. This variety of grape is almost
solely cultivated in El Bierzo.
Our vineyards, all of them of more than 60 years old, are perfectly
situated to guarantee the exposure to the sun. The resulting fruit
provides us with a high alcoholic degree, good extract,
ideal acidity and an intense aroma.
In our Bodega, with capacity to elaborate 400.000 quality bottles, the
stainless steel deposits for controlled fermentation are combined with
others made of concrete re-dressed in epoxi resin, destined to store
the wine when in rest with a stable temperature. The process is
completed with wooden deposits and casks made of French oak.
