EmbracePortable Incubation BlanketJane Chen, Linus Liang, Rahul Panicker, Razmig Hovaghimianand Naganand MurtyIn 2007, a group of Stanford students sought to address high mortality rates among premature and low-birth-weight babies by designing a better incubator for the developing world. The invention, the Embrace infant warmer, was prototyped at TechShop San Francisco and is now saving thousands of lives worldwide. At less than one percent the cost of a traditional incubator, Embrace is more accessible to underserved hospitals and clinics; the warmer does not require constant electricity and is hygienic, reusable and portable. The award-winning product is now manufactured in India—one of the many countries where Embrace is making an impact. The Embrace team is now a part of international NGO Thrive Networks and is working to expand it’s line of innovative healthcare technologies.

DODOcaseTechnology AccessoriesPatrick Buckley and Craig DaltonDODOcase's handcrafted tablet and smartphone cases, laptop sleeves, wallets, folios and paper notebooks have the look and feel of luxury. DODOcase’s first product married the emerging iPad trend and the disappearing art of bookbinding to create a unique, beautiful case that customers loved. As a member of TechShop, DODOcase cofounder Patrick Buckley was able to utilize specialty equipment to produce a prototype for under $500. After winning Shopify’s Build A Business competition, DODOcase brought in $3 million during the first year in operation. DODOcase continues to thrive by aligning it’s products with cutting-edge technology releases, recently launching a pop-up virtual reality viewer.

We have our own office now, but we still come [to TechShop] to make

SUCCESS STORY

Oru KayakSporting EquipmentAnton WillisOru Kayak creator Anton Willis grew up in Mendocino County, CA, kayaking in the ocean and local waterways. After moving to San Francisco, he found that storing his kayak was problematic in his small apartment. Inspired by origami, he began folding paper with the idea to design a boat he could keep in the city. With paper models in hand, Anton joined TechShop in 2011 to make and test real prototypes. He then partnered with ArdySobhani and Roberto Gutierrez, fundraised on Kickstarter and Shark Tank, and earned numerous accolades for his lightweight, folding kayaks. Oru Kayak is now distributed internationally and sold by major retailers such as Amazon, REI and Backcountry.com.

In the process, his sketchbook models became the inspiration for a multipurpose, portable lamp that elegantly folds accordion style into what resembles a hardcover book. Max made use of TechShop hardware to prototype Lumio, bouncing ideas off other members, even taking pointers from the Oru Kayak team. Better Off WedPersonalized Wedding Cake ToppersTina Albin-LaxWith a New Year’s resolution to make something, Tina came into TechShop and took a laser cutting class. To practice her new skills, she cut out cake toppers for each of the children at her nephew’s birthday party that weekend. Without even knowing she had a business yet, Better Off Wed was born. As Tina says, Better Off Wed cake toppers are artisan tokens of love + affection—with reckless abandon. Tina is the creator of the original statement wedding cake topper. Five years after starting her company, her work has been featured in Brides, on The Knot, on Etsy and in The New York Times.

I would say that TechShop—rather than a person—has been most influential to my craft. I’ve always had tons of ideas, but once I had access to the tools I needed, I could turn my ideas to reality. TechShop has also been an

awesome place to share knowledge and collaborate with outside-the-box thinkers.

Outdoor enthusiasts and cofounders Alec Drummond and Jonathan Cedar built the first BioLite prototypes at TechShop in Menlo Park, CA. The two quickly realized the potential of their woodburning and electricity-generating technology to make a global impact by reducing harmful CO2 emissions and easing the lives of people who live in energy poverty. Now on a mission to “bring energy everywhere,” BioLite designs groundbreaking cooking, charging and lighting solutions that benefit avid campers and emerging markets alike. Brit+CoOnline Inspirational DIY ClassesBrit MorinAfter quitting her job at Google, Brit Morin knew that her dream was to start her own business. She wanted to return to the part of her childhood where she loved to just make and create, she found TechShop. Brit would go to the shop at least once a week to use the laser cutters, letter press, screen printers and sewing machines. Realizing there was a generation of women who had no idea how to cook, sew or do domestic things, created Brit+Co to make learning these skills more accessible. People now take classes on the site and Brit+Co supplies them with DIY kits and tools. Brit Morin was on the Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2013.

Boosted BoardsElectric Vehicles Sanjay Dastoor, John Ulmenand Matt TranAs a college student, John Ulmen longed for a way to get around campus quickly, efficiently and with minimal effort. He shared his idea for an electric longboard with fellow Stanford engineering students Sanjay Dastoor and Matt Tran, and so began Boosted Boards—the world’s lightest electric vehicles. At just 12 pounds, the board is capable of traveling up to 22 MPH and 6 miles on a single charge, braking and ascending even the steepest San Francisco hills. Before expanding to it’s own business space, Boosted Boards rented a small room at TechShop to store the tools and inventory, including it’s first functional prototype of the longboard. Since leaving the TechShop nest, Boosted’s business is thriving; the boards are available at major retailers like Amazon and regularly sell out.

Trusst LingerieSupportive BraLaura West and Sophia BermanCarnegie Mellon industrial design grads Sophia Berman and Laura West were tired of ill-fitting, unattractive bras that claimed to provide support but instead painfully dug into their skin. Together, they sought to design a beautiful, better-fitting bra for larger cup sizes. Inspired by the technology of the bridge truss (hence the name “Trusst”), they engineered a patent-pending support system that provides 80% of the bra’s lift from below, making the wearer far more comfortable. As participants in startup accelerator Alpha Lab Gear, Sophia and Laura brought their vision to life using CAD software at their local TechShop. To date, hundreds of women have tested and glowingly reviewed Trusst prototypes. Preorders for the first batch of bras have sold out and will ship in 2016. Next up for Trusst: expanding the line to include more bra styles and colors.

SquareMobile Payment DeviceJames McKelvey and Jack Dorsey (cofounder)Perhaps TechShop’s most legendary success story, mobile credit card reader Square got its start at the Menlo Park workshop in 2009. Jim McKelvey was a glass artist who had lost a $2,000 sale because he couldn’t take credit cards. With the help of his friend Jack Dorsey, founder of Twitter, Jim began to seek funding for his idea but was rejected without a prototype in hand. Undeterred, Jim joined TechShop and in just 1 month created the prototype that raised $10 million in their company’s Series A round. Square has since emerged as an innovator in payment technology for individuals and enterprises of all sizes, and now offers register service, small business financing, customer engagement tools, and even food delivery service from high-quality restaurants through acquired startup Caviar.
