ARCHITECTURE
"Architect" comes from the latin word architectus which comes from the Greek ἀρχιτέκτων (architéktōn).
Architéktōn is composed of two parts: ἀρχι (archi: to be the first, who commands) and τέκτων (tecton: mason, builder, creator). That is, the chief who sends the masons
WHAT IS ARCHITECTURE?Architecture is the science and art of designing buildings. These buildings/ structures can be houses, schools, places of worship, libraries and office buildings.
People who practice architecture are called architects. Architects express an artistic vision through the size, shape, color, materials, and style of a building’s elements.
Architecture can be about small designs, such as a garage, or large designs, such as a whole city.

- Architects draw buildings in many different ways using technical drawings. - Elevation, plan, and section are three types of technical drawings that architects create when designing a building. Follow
the instructions below and draw the bell pepper in each type of drawing. - When finished, use the back of this sheet to draw your home in each style (and enjoy your pepper as a snack while you do!).*

Technical Drawings
Draw a floor plan of your house or apartment - draw the floor plan of your house/apartment, using the blank plan* on the following pages. Use pencils, colored pencils, markers or crayons. Be sure to label each room: kitchen, living room, bathroom, your bedroom, and any other rooms you have.
If you have a second (or third!) floor in your house/apartment, draw a separate floor plan for each floor. Not all rooms are perfectly square or rectangular, so draw the rooms true to their shape. It may help if you sit in the middle of each room and can see how all the walls come together. Make sure you include doorways and windows!

Draw and elevation plan of the front of your house/apartment - Use the elevation plan* on the following pages to draw an elevation of the front of your house or apartment, complete with doors, windows, steps and any decorations that may be on the front of it. Is there a garage attached to your house? Is your house/apartment made of brick or wood or stucco? Include as many details as you can that make your house special.

When the building formerly known as the Sears Tower was completed in 1973, it was the tallest building in the world. It held that title until 1998 when the Petronas Towers in Malaysia were completed, which led to controversy about which one was technically taller. In 2016, with taller buildings being constructed all over the world, The Willis tower lost its place in the top 10 tallest buildings in the world..
