Objective 1: What is President Theodore Roosevelt's view on the role of Government?

President Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909)- progressive president, 1st Pres. to stand up and regulate trusts, sided

w. people over business, not corrupt!!!

Theodore Roosevelt –was Vice president became president when Pres. McKinley was shot

Pres Roosevelt- willing to compromise rather than achieve nothing

• View of Government- Pres. should lead (Congress was slow)– 1st Modern Pres. (most

powerful man in America)• View on business- felt that when

they became monopolies, business’ exploited (cheated) the public

• *TR wanted regulation (rules) to prevent abuses

» Coal Strike- TR worked with labor (workers) and owners to establish better hours and pay for coal miners

– What would happen if Roosevelt did not interfere the coal miners strike and it went through the winter?

– When should the Gov. interfere with business and set rules?

Pure Food and Drug Act- forbid the sale of mislabeled or un-pure drugs (medicine still did not cure people yet people made false claims their medicine did, also all drugs were legal- cocaine, heroin, marijuana) What could happen if a person took the wrong medicine?

Meat Inspection Act- set rules for sanitary (clean) meat (grade A)

Roosevelt Protects the Environment

• Conservation- TR loved the wilderness and wanted to preserve certain areas for the future– What was the attitude most Americans had then (and even today)

in regards to nature and the wilderness?• National Parks- set aside land not to be developed (Yosemite)
