Birdee GolfA lot of us go out in the backyard with a wedge and chip some balls around. A few of the more excitable among us can’t resist taking a full swing. A fine idea if you don’t have any neighbors or care much about your lawn. That is until BIRDEE GOLF launched onto the scene late last year being featured in the Best New Product Zone at this years National PGA Show in Orlando and being voted Best New Product in the most recent Minneapolis Golf Show by TwinCitiesGolf.com. BIRDEE GOLF consists of 2 target nets (no assembly and sets up in seconds!) and 6-patented birdees (golf ball/shuttle combo) and a nylon-carrying bag for easy storage and portability. BIRDEE GOLF’S flexibility allows you to not only play a very exciting full swing golf game but also makes for a great limited flight training aid. The patented birdees hit and react just like a real golf ball allowing you to fine tune your accuracy on a variety of wedge shots at varying swing speeds and the one piece molded design won’t break apart like other models.
Whether on the beach, in the yard or tailgating BIRDEE GOLF allows you to have fun, work on your game and satisfy that urge to reach back and crush it!

First Tee offer all this and more, while teaching kids the great game of golf.
During 2012, Tee Times Press is running a series of articles focusing on the many organizations, both public and private, that support the growth of golf in Minnesota. The organizations being
Minnesota Woman’s Golf Association, the EWGA and the Fairway Foundation.
THE MINNESOTA MINORITY JUNIOR GOLF ASSOCIATIONOne of the best ways to grow the game of golf is to demonstrate the game’s gifts to a youngster at an early age. No one takes this idea to heart more than F. Clayton Tyler. This Minneapolis attorney gained so much from his years caddying at Minneapolis public golf courses, that he took it upon himself to develop a program designed to instill the values he learned from his childhood golf experiences.
LEARNING FROM A LEGEND
American quarterback and a player on the Gophers’ national championship team. Arising at 6 a.m. to caddy for the college Hall of Famer taught Tyler about the importance of commitment. Also, the money management skills that became necessary with newfound caddy income
people Tyler met at various golf courses, proved to be an early lesson in networking to which Tyler adheres today.
The Minnesota Minority Junior Golf Association is the legacy spurred by Tyler’s positive experiences as a caddy. In 1987, the MMJGA began as a charitable organization designed to support minority junior golf and create opportunities through the game. In 1999, the organization evolved into its present form when its caddy program took shape.
“I wanted this program to be so much more than just teaching a child how to play golf. I felt MMJGA should be about life lessons on issues like integrity, discipline, learning responsibility, earning money, and the value of hard work. Caddying teaches a youngster all these things,” Tyler said.
CADDY SUCCESS STORIESTyler was asked if there were spontaneous offshoots of the program that surprised him. Tyler recalled attending a scholarship banquet at a Minneapolis church. The banquet had nothing to do with golf. Much to Tyler’s delight, an impromptu MMJGA testimonial came out of
through our program. He got up in front of the people assembled and said he wanted to thank me and our Executive Director Jackie Cherryholmes. He said our caddying program taught him so much about perseverance and hard work. This young man said that the traits he

parents are involved, too. The encouraging nudge that a parent provides helps greatly with a child’s overall commitment. There are positives across the board when the parent becomes involved and the child starts earning money through the game of golf. We’ve had many parents tell us about the difference our program has made in their lives,” Tyler said.
THE FIRST TEE – LEARNING ABOUT LIFE THROUGH GOLFThe First Tee is a national junior program with local ties that is also helping youngsters grow through golf. According to First Tee of St. Paul’s Executive Director Brian Simpson, golf is a tremendous vehicle for teaching a child core personal values. “Honesty and Integrity are the keys to success. Golf

Ask any pro and they’ll say it’s great to teach someone before bad habits are ingrained. What’s interesting is that the key strategies consistently practiced by the best golfers apply perfectly to success in life. “As a youngster nears the completion of our program, they’re expected to give back. The participant is given the opportunity to either help a newcomer to our program or volunteer in the community. This is a wonderful chance for those who’ve been helped to help others,” Simpson explained.
First Tee of St. Paul will work with 1,000 youngsters in 2012. In addition to St. Paul, there are four other Twin Cities locations from which to choose. Simpson noted that through donations and grants, St. Paul’s Highland Park Golf Course is opening a new kids’ learning center on their golf range. Another exciting development is that family members of military personnel get free golf and life lessons through First Tee.
Simpson echoed the beliefs of MMJGA’s Clayton Tyler when he shared the silver lining to the First Tee program. “We’re focused on breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for kids. We’re also all about seeing kids achieve their dreams,” Simpson said.

The overriding philosophy of this book is: The most controllable goal you can have is to hit every shot with total commitment. Go after each shot with a complete sense of purpose. If you share this idea with your playing partner (the guy who stands over the ball for an eternity,) you’ll both have more fun.

Author Pia Nilsson (Annika Sorenstam’s coach) believes a thought plan should be determined prior to setting up to the ball. Once you step up to the ball, you should have already committed to your plan, and all that’s left is to swing.
Any indecision should occur prior to address or when you’re in what Nilsson calls the Think Box. Once a golfer enters the Play Box you make your grip, aim your clubface, align your body, make a connection to your target, and swing. Decide, commit, and swing. It’s as simple as that.

without even realizing it. Even our very own Kim Benjamin, editor of Tee Times Press, shows off her Loudmouth skirts any time she has the opportunity! Loudmouth Golf, which was founded at the turn of the century in 2000, is taking the fashion side of golf to a whole new level, even more so than guys like Ian Poulter and Rickie Fowler. No more plain khaki, grey, or navy: featuring a lineup that balances classic looks from decades past with a bright eye for the future of the sport, Loudmouth golf makes a statement that sets the brand apart from any others in the industry.
Founder and Chief Designer Scott “Woody” Woodworth started the company because “golfers used to dress like this in the Seventies. We all remember that, or if you’re too young you’ve seen pictures of it. The standard joke is that golf and fashion don’t mix; the [conventional] pants are almost a joke in themselves. I started the

Pornanong Phatlum, from Thailand, wore Loudmouth threads when capturing a victory on the LPGA Tour last month as well. “We’ve got a lot of ladies, plus a lot of
The leading Loudmouths, Woody and Larry, disagree on which is the best way to wear your Loudmouth gear. Woody offers the suggestion of only wearing a solid colored golf shirt (black looks good with virtually ALL Loudmouth pants) to really let the pants stand out and

throwing on the full Loudmouth is a lot of fun, and it is eye opening. For a TOUR player, they’re almost always going to want to throw a solid shirt in there, but with everything else having a Loudmouth pattern, that’s going to look good and loud and still not fall into the crazy category.”
Loudmouth golf also makes special pants for special events, based on timing and inspiration. For example, for the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont, Loudmouth designed the “Oakmont Houndstooth” pants to pay homage to Johnny Miller, who wore that same look during his
partner at NBC, Dan Hicks.

We are now designing specialty pants and shorts with corporate logos and colors so companies can brand themselves in interesting and exciting pants rather than just doing the same old things for their golf tournaments, sales meetings, giveaways and other things. We have done specialty pants with Home Depot, Pabst Blue Ribbon and several charities. Creating specialty pants for corporate branding is a very big future opportunity for us.”
If you’ve never heard of Loudmouth before, or are even aware of the brand but have never given it a try, go get a pair! The styles are plentiful (not to mention, obviously, colorful), and can inject

Do you suggest static stretching before I play golf?
By Matt Just - PGA Golf Professional
Golf Fitness Instructor, Life Time Fitness, St. Louis Park“Hey Pro,
If you don’t believe me go ahead and Google “Rickey Fowler golf warm up” and you will find Fowler and his personal trainer warming up with techniques known as dynamic warm up. As you watch, think of these warm ups as stretching your muscles by moving them, not the traditional static stretching that is proven to have little benefit and many even do more harm than good. When most people think of stretching they think of toe touches, quad stretches, and other techniques that isolate an individual muscle in a lengthened position for 10 seconds. Golf fitness and Titleist research shows that stretching doesn’t reduce injury risk and may actually hurt performance, holding a stretch will activate a protective reflex that temporarily weakens muscles. Don’t get me wrong, stretching can increase flexibility but it doesn’t boost muscular efficiency. Still confused… think of the analogy this way, when you just stand there and statically stretch it’s kind of like you purchased some empty land, and forgot to develop any real estate. Dynamic warm up is development of real estate.
Dynamic stretching accomplishes two main jobs; recruits the major
the cold muscles. Examples of dynamic stretching would be arm swings, arm circles, leg swings, walking lunges, and arms crossed
practical note, I try to always have my students warm up in a dynamic way; in my opinion I think dynamic stretching tricks the nervous system into relaxing.
In closing, here’s a tip from the top: never force cold muscles to move in unnatural ways. If you
recommend that as a warm up, all you have to
warm up! It’s that easy.
PRO: Shocking answer but the research says NO! Many top athletes and trainers argue that static stretching is ineffective and potentially unsafe.

The weekly series “Beyond the Ropes” has been providing a peek into these players’ lives and passions outside of golf and showcases personal stories of the professional golfers not seen before. This weekly series of more than a dozen segments is featured on the U.S. Women’s Open Facebook page at www.facebook.com/2012uswomensopen.
“These women are incredible athletes and they have devoted their lives to the pursuit of excellence in this challenging sport,” said Jim Richerson, group director of golf for Kohler Co. and general chairman of the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open. “But there’s a lot more to them than golf, and I think this video series shines a light on other important aspects of their lives and helps us all to get to know them better as individuals.”
Among the professional golfers featured in “Beyond the Ropes” are USGA champions Cristie Kerr, Morgan Pressel, Lexi Thompson, Yani Tseng, Christina Kim and Laura Diaz.

For professional golfers, a good match can make for a nice payout, but for Cristie Kerr, every birdie she makes lightens her wallet a little bit. That’s by design, however, because through her foundation, Birdies for Breast Cancer, Kerr has vowed to contribute $50
toward breast cancer research for every birdie she makes on tour. Kerr became a passionate breast cancer activist after watching her mother, aunt and godmother battle the disease. She has raised more than $2 million for breast cancer research and treatment, and in 2010, she opened the Cristie Kerr Women’s Health Center in Jersey City, N.J.
She was ranked number one in the world three times in 2010
in LPGA events. She won the U.S. Women’s Open in 2007 and captured at the 2010 LPGA Championship by an unprecedented 12 strokes. Kerr has participated six times in the Solheim Cup and in 2011 she became the top American money winner in LPGA history.

there’s the approach shot to #9. Talk about beautiful! The Lake nine states its own case with
redesigned $5 million dollar clubhouse. Finally, the Canyon nine raises its hand, and we call to the forefront holes like the (personal favorite) 1st, with its crossing creeks and stone
With so many strong holes on each nine, it’s no wonder that it’s essentially fruitless to ask any of the staff members which nine to play. “All of them.” Is really the only correct answer. The Wisconsin Dells has many good golf opportunities, and a few great ones. Trappers Turn is well worthy of all the acclaim it receives from around the state and country (4.5 Stars by Golf Digest). They know what the golfer is looking for, and the interactive General Manager
provide the greatest dining, entertainment, and golf. In this town, once known merely for its waterparks, we make the strongest possible case for golf.”
There are some great stay and play package opportunities at the Kalahari Resort, with its indoor and outdoor waterparks, theme parks and activity hubs. Since Todd Nelson took over seven years ago, he and his company have provided affordable luxury for the golf traveler in the state of Wisconsin. There’s certainly a lot to do in the Wisconsin Dells, from riding motorized birds (ducks) to eating fudge and sundaes. But if golf at Trappers Turn isn’t on your “to do” list, you’re missing the cherry to top the proverbial sundae. And we can’t have that.

He didn’t have to convince us. We’ll be back. The Castle Course may very well be the most entertaining round of golf in the state of Wisconsin. Whistling Straits may be the most

While some are fortunate enough to travel the country and experience the courses to which the Castle Course is attributed, the rest of us can embrace a short car trip, and no baggage fees, instead. Not only can we each take our own shot at mimicking history, but we can love the heck out of the other 11 holes as well. In the days before the iPod, if you listened to music outside you had a “ghetto blaster” sometimes referred to as a “boom box”. Swaney, whose family lived on Hastings CC, grew up on the golf course. From an early age he eagerly waited to play a few holes with his dad after supper. He spent hours on the putting green chipping and putting and learned to compete beating the bigger kids out of nickels and dimes.

tournaments, he many times made unforced errors. He tried alcohol and an occasional joint to keep himself calm. He was always looking for the answer.
When I got the pairing sheet for the annual Hildebrandt Invitational Tournament, at Hastings Country Club, I was happy to see that I was playing with my old friend Greg

The lie was okay, but Swaney was forced to play his bread and butter shot, the power fade, around a big tree on the far side of the pond. Swaney and his club caddie were standing on the sliver of land that extended into the pond. The relaxed Swaney said to his young caddie, “Son, I am going to cut this one right around that big tree. So watch it close,
placed the bag on his shoulder, ready to go.
The “relaxed” Swaney was getting nervous and twitchy. He took two big practice swings, the divots landed far into the lake. With all eyes on the ball, Swaney made perfect contact, his ball made the right turn around the tree toward the green. Then we heard a scream,
into the lake; he went deeper as the slippery mud bottom sucked him in.
We spent the next ten minutes and used all of our towels cleaning up Swaney’s clubs, bag and caddie. And bowed our heads to honor the end of Swaney’s boom box! Swaney is now playing the big golf course in the sky and God is watching his power fade. Every member of Hastings CC has a Greg Swanson story, he left his mark!

After the coin toss to determine which unlucky two had to share the third bedroom (and listen to the other snore and fart all night), the four amigos were off to attack the challenging Black Brook. The worms seemed to be everywhere, on the ball washer, on the greens, even on the cart seat where Mr. GQ sat on one and got a slimy green stain on his white Tommy Bahama shorts. Coach commented that the worms had eaten some of the leaves off a few of the bushes along the cart path. The worms were even present as they grilled steaks, drank more beer and watched the spectacular sunset over the dead sea.

Tell us what you do during the golf off-season. I’m a full time grad student, taking classes at the U of M in the program of Physical Therapy.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in “beverage distribution” at your golf course? I really enjoy the game of golf; I absolutely love the outdoors and socializing
with other people; there is no better job in the summer than bev cart!
What’s the best tip you have ever received from a golfer...monetarily or other? I sold a diet coke for $2.50, a lady gave me a $20 bill and said keep the change. I asked, “Are you sure?” and she insisted.
What’s the funniest thing you have ever seen on the golf course? I saw a guy tee off, almost whiff and the ball ended up somehow hitting his ankle. Looked like it hurt, but pretty funny.
What hobbies do you have away from the golf course? Anything outside on
just hanging out with my friends.
What is your favorite drink? Blended strawberry daiquiri. It’s a good thing we don’t have blenders on the cart or no one else would get served.
Do you play golf? How well? Yes! I grew up with it; golf is a part of my family. I played all throughout high school and one year of college. I’m okay, but not as good as I want to be. Story of a golfers life.
When your “career” as a beverage cart girl is over what are your goals in life? Well, I hope to graduate in 2 years with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy; ideally I would love to work in a sports therapy clinic, rehabilitating athletes.
