I. Introduction

The primary goal of the Teens and Twenties Committee is to educate young people at high schools, colleges, and universities. The committee connects with staff to plan classroom outreaches, staff tables at health fairs, and teach about food addiction and FA’s solution. We are not recruiting students or staff through our efforts, but instead focusing on education and outreach. The Teens & Twenties Committee meets at 9:45 am EST in person at the monthly Eastern Area Intergroup meeting, usually held on the first or second Sunday of the month in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. We encourage and welcome any FA member who can’t attend EAI in person to dial in to the committee meeting each month. The conference call information is below: Dial-in: 605.475.4700, Access Code 293738 # Here is a list of the dates when EAI meets: https://www.foodaddicts.org/eastern-area-intergroup [updated regularly] Committee members spend 45 minutes reviewing our literature, discussing our progress on scheduling outreaches, and checking in on streamlining and fine-tuning the processes, procedures, and documents available for assistance. This kit is intended to help FA members plan, organize, and execute an outreach at a high school, college, or university. The procedures are based on feedback from participating FA members, school staff members, and students. We encourage and consider any recommendations, feedback, or tips from anyone involved in the outreach.

II. Sample Scripts for Contacting High Schools, Colleges, or Universities

These sample scripts are guidelines and do not need to be read exactly as written. The purpose is to help FA members who wish to reach out to local high schools, colleges, or universities to discuss opportunities to educate students and staff about food addiction and the FA program.

When making a phone call to a school contact, start by introducing yourself as a member of Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous (FA), a Twelve-Step program for food addiction. Ask them if they have time to talk with you about learning more about the program and how FA can help educate their staff and students.

If you sense your contact is interested in learning more, be patient and continue to reach out. Persistence pays off and there is no rush; these conversations can take place over days, weeks and even months.

If you sense your contact is not interested in having FA members come in person, ask if they are receptive to receiving literature about our program in the mail. This is a nice way to start a relationship and continue the conversation later.

A. Phone Call Scripts

Hi. My name is __________ and I am a member of a Twelve Step program called Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous.

● If you have a direct contact at the school, you can start with: I’m calling to ask if you’d be interested in having members of our Twelve-Step program come and speak with your students or faculty about food addiction.

● If you don’t have a direct contact at the school, you can start with: I am hoping to speak with someone who might be interested in learning more about food addiction and our program of recovery; perhaps a health teacher, someone in the health or fitness department, a counselor, nurse or addiction specialist.

General background to share: FA is a Twelve-Step program for people who have problems with food and weight. Some of the symptoms of food addiction include obesity, bulimia, binge eating, and obsession with exercise or body image. FA is a non-profit organization based on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and is entirely free. Our website is WWW.FOODADDICTS.ORG if you’d like to learn more on your own.

Are you familiar with FA or AA? (Discuss briefly how FA is based on the Twelve-Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous, except we focus on addiction to food, specifically flour, sugar and unmeasured quantities.)

Members of our program are available to speak with health and addiction classes in high schools and colleges to educate those in their teens and twenties about food addiction. We want to do service for the community by educating youth and educators.

It has personally helped me tremendously to do this volunteer work. (Continue as you feel comfortable to tell a small part of your story of food addiction and how FA has helped you.)

Is this something that your school might be interested in learning more about?

● If they say yes – you could say: I will send you some informational literature to review and share with faculty and students. Can we organize a time for some of our members to come and speak with your students and faculty, perhaps in a classroom, at a health fair or in an assembly setting?

● Get pertinent information to mail literature and stay connected: o Contact’s full name and title/position o Mailing address (ask if there is a room number or “attention to” name) o Contact’s email o Contact’s phone number

● Provide the contact with your information (name, email, phone) ● Suggested materials to send to your contact after initial conversation:

o Food Addiction: There is a Solution (pamphlet) o Teens and Twenties (pamphlet) o Letter or note from you to your contact saying thank you and mention that you’ll

be in touch again soon. ● If they say no – you could say:

Is there another department in the school that might be interested? Do you have contact information for that person or department? Would it be OK for me to send you some free literature about our program and food addiction? You can look over it and share it with your staff. Some schools choose to display the literature in their health department or counseling offices. Thank you for your time.

B. Email Template Subject: How can Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous be of service to your school? Dear [Contact Name], I am a member of a Twelve-Step program called Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous (FA) and I’m reaching out to offer educational information about food addiction to your staff and students. Most people are familiar with the concept of alcoholism and drug addiction, but the idea that certain foods and quantities of foods can be addictive is only slowly gaining acceptance. The FA program is based on the Twelve-Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous and offers a long-term solution to addictive eating. FA members are people of all ages from all over the world. Some of us have been obese; others have been undereaters, bulimic, or so obsessed with food or weight that we could not freely live our lives. We welcome the opportunity to provide information to your staff and students about the nature of food addiction, its various manifestations, and how the program of FA can help. Our main purpose is to educate, not to recruit or diagnose. The program is entirely free. We can be of service to your school by

● Sending free literature about food addiction and FA’s solution to read and share with staff and/or students

● Speaking to a group of staff about food addiction and FA’s solution ● Speaking to a group of students in a classroom setting about food addiction and our

personal stories of recovery ● Speaking to a larger group in an assembly setting about food addiction and our personal

stories of recovery ● Setting up a table with literature at a school health fair ● (Only for campuses with on-campus housing) Speaking with Residential Assistants on

campus about food addiction and FA’s solution If you would like more information about our program, please visit www.foodaddicts.org. My email is [email address] and my phone number is [phone number]. I am more than happy to answer any questions you might have. Thank you for your time, [First name last initial]

A. FA Member Sign-Up Sheet for Classroom Outreaches

The FA member(s) organizing the outreach will use this form to track which FA fellows are available to attend. The organizer can solicit fellows by phone or by passing this sign-up sheet around in person at a meeting, business meeting, LSG meeting or at EAI’s monthly meeting. The Teens and Twenties Committee suggests that all participants have at least 90 days of continuous abstinence. At least one of the fellows attending should have at least two years of abstinence and have completed an AWOL. The organizer(s) might want to consider the demographics, personal experiences and recovery of the members they are asking to speak. For example, any member can speak to a group of students and share their own experience. However, the organizer(s) may want to get diversity in stories for the students to hear (members who were overweight/underweight, struggled with over-exercising, had bariatric surgery, etc.). F. Classroom Outreach Format

Hello! My name is _______and this is ________, and we are members of Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous, or FA as we call it.

FA is a fellowship of individuals who, through shared experience and mutual support, are recovering from addictive eating. We welcome all who want to stop hurting themselves with food. It is a self-supporting program (that means you don’t have to pay any fees) and it is not religious or political. FA is for anyone who has a desire to stop eating addictively.

People who come to our program have an unhealthy relationship with food and body image. Some come in needing to lose weight, some need to gain weight, and some just had a lot of mental obsession. There are many people who can lose weight by simply cutting down portions, choosing healthier options, using willpower or following a diet like Weight Watchers. Many of us have tried these things. We may have found some success, but it was only short term. Other individuals, in extreme attempts, have resorted to not eating, vomiting, excessive exercise and laxative abuse.

How many of you know something about Twelve-Step programs? (pause and discuss) FA is based on the same principles and guidelines of other Twelve Step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous.

FA has developed this definition of food addiction: Food addiction is a disease of the mind, body and spirit for which there is no cure; but it can be arrested one day at a time, by our adapting to a disciplined way of eating and using the Twelve Step program of FA. When we abuse food by using it as a drug, our lives become unmanageable. Food addicts have an allergy to flour, sugar and quantities that sets up an uncontrollable craving. The problem can be arrested a day at a time by weighing and measuring our food, and abstaining completely from all flour and sugar.

In FA we follow a food plan given to us by a sponsor, and in addition there are several things we do on a regular basis which help to make it easier for someone to keep away from addictive behaviors.

I would like to share with you a little about what it was like for me before I found the program, and then finding FA, how I came to understand that I am a food addict and how the program helps me. Both of us will tell you about our own experiences.

First Speaker (10-15 mins) Second Speaker (10-15 mins)

Are there any questions? (Please leave at least 15 minutes for questions)

We want you all to know that FA is available to anyone that has a problem with food, and it is easy to contact someone. We have a website (point out the name of the website is foodaddicts.org, NOT foodaddicts.com), we have meetings listed on the website, and contact numbers for each meeting.

Thanks for your attention!

G. Best Practices for Classroom Outreach These documents provide general guidelines for speaking to students in a classroom setting, either at a high school, college, or university.

● Remember that our goal is to educate, NOT to try and identify who might be food addicts in the group or to recruit people to the program.

● Avoid talking about God in a school setting. Using the phrase “Thank you, God” is common and appropriate, but we want to avoid talking about specific religions or the concept of “turning our will over.”

● Consider using language such as, “This may not apply to you. We are just here to provide information about food addiction and tell people about the solution that the FA program offers.”

● You may want to begin the outreach by asking if anyone has heard of FA, or if not, Alcoholics Anonymous. AA can be used as a reference point when discussing FA.

● Please focus sharing to the age level of the group. ● Use a relaxed, relatable tone. Try minimized FA program “jargon.” ● Please dress becomingly, but in approachable, comfortable attire. ● Remember to share from your own experience, focusing on the structure of the FA

program and your personal recovery from food addiction. ● Sometimes, people who see the 20 Questions can get upset or confused. Point out the

small print underneath that states “you may” be a food addict. ● Bring your photos, but do not display them. It has much more of an impact when you

personally share your pictures. ● Do not share your phone number with students.

F. Best Practices for Health Fair Outreaches These documents provide general guidelines for speaking to students or faculty in a health fair setting occurring at the high school or university level. Due to the age and the setting, FA members interacting with students must be careful of certain language, religious or spiritual topics and sharing personal contact information, including, but not limited to, phone numbers, email addresses and social media accounts. Suggested attire: Dress becomingly and bring your pictures

Setting up the table when you arrive:

● Please set up behind the table, as opposed to in front or to the side. ● Please do not stand in front of the table or around the area passing out tri-folds. If you

need to speak to someone more privately, step to the side of the table, leaving the front open and inviting to others.

● Display the FA literature, banner and tri-folds neatly on the table. You may use literature racks if they are available.

● If you have your pictures available, do not display them on the table or on billboards. It has much more of an impact when you personally share your picture.

● Have one person behind the table at all times. When covering each other for meals, please eat away from the table.

● Please turn your cell phone off when you are sitting at the table. If you need to make or take a call, please step far enough away from the table so your conversation cannot be overheard.

● Refrain from comparing or mentioning other Twelve-Step programs for food. Talk from your own experience using “I” instead of “we” about food addiction and FA recovery.

● Try to keep a simple list/tally of how many people stopped by the table. Helpful Hints:

● FA members should try to initiate conversation with individuals who come to the table. Often people are reluctant to talk about their own issues around food but might feel more open if you share your experiences.

● You can ask if they have ever heard of FA to engage them in conversation. Or ask if they have ever heard of Alcoholics Anonymous and use AA as a reference point.

● Sometimes, people who see the 20 Questions can get upset or confused. Point out the small print underneath that states “you may” be a food addict.

● If you participate in a health fair that has low attendance, know that your time spent there has still made an impact. You are educating others and building awareness about FA and food addiction. The few people you come into contact with may tell other

people they know about FA. Also, you can visit the other tables and speak with those people to tell them about the program and give them literature.

● Remember that our goal is to educate, NOT to try and identify who might be food addicts in the group or to recruit people into the program.

● Avoid talking about God in a school setting. Using the phrase “thank you God” is common and appropriate, but we want to avoid talking about specific religions or the concept of “turning our will over.”

● Bring your photos, but do not display them. It has much more of an impact when you personally share your pictures.

Dear <COLLEGE> Counselors & Healthcare providers,

[YOUR STORY. See one example: During my college years at UCI my struggles with food skyrocketed due to the stress and pressure I put on myself to succeed. I wasn't alone. Conversations among fellow students about food and their weight were common. I hoped things would change for me but they worsened. Fortunately, a few years after graduation, I heard about a Twelve-Step program that helped me lose over 70 pounds and keep it off for the last 20 years. I finally found peace and a life that I had never dreamed possible. I want to share this free resource with other UCI students and alum in hopes that they might be spared years of needless suffering.

Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous (FA). FA is for anyone who suffers from overeating, under eating, bulimia, or obsession with food, weight or body size. There are no dues or fees, and meetings are open to anyone who wants to stop eating addictively.

Attached is a Healthcare Professional brochure with more information for your staff. Additionally, to help students learn about FA, please add www.foodaddicts.org to your counseling, health, or community resources webpage(s).

As you may now be planning for the YEAR National Eating Disorder Awareness (NEDA) week, I wanted to make you aware of some of the resources we can provide to colleges during NEDA week and throughout the year. There is no cost involved.

● Local members can come to your campus and speak with your students or staff. ● Local members can set up a table or provide literature for a health fair or event. ● Local members can be invited into one of your classes discussing eating disorders to

share their personal stories and experiences with food addiction. They can also be available for a Lunch and Learn event, panel or counseling center workshop.

● We have a generic article/fact sheet attached to this email which can be used as the basis for an article about food addiction in a student newsletter/publication or circulated to students in hard copy or email form.

● You can post www.foodaddicts.org to your Health and Wellness, Counseling Center, or Community Health Resources website pages, especially those relating to addiction, recovery, mental health, or eating disorders.

● A copy of our FA book and some of our FA pamphlets geared towards young adults can be sent to you to give out as needed.

Please let us know if you are interested in any of the above options or if we can be of service in any way. We can be reached at [email protected]. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.
