Many people use the terms ‘teeth whitening’ and ‘teeth bleaching’ interchangeably but there is a subtle difference between the two.

• The term ‘teeth bleaching’ is used when the teeth are going to be whitened beyond their natural shade of white.

• Tooth whitening is a process that just brings the color of the teeth down a few shades to match or get as close as possible to the natural white of the teeth.

• Most teeth whitening kits, as well as dental tooth whitening procedures, generally involve the bleaching of the teeth.

• There are two types of liquids that are used in teeth bleaching: hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. The bleaching agent that dentists prefer is hydrogen peroxide because it’s much, much stronger and works much more quickly.

1. Teeth Whitening vs. Teeth Bleaching

4

• The tooth whitening kits that you can buy in stores however, use carbamide peroxide, which is slower and not as effective. Carbamide peroxide turns into hydrogen peroxide as it breaks down, which means that this process needs to happen first.

• Starting with hydrogen peroxide is about three times more effective than starting with carbamideperoxide.

mail: 3055 N. Pulaski Rd. Chicago, IL 60641phone: 1-773-823-0053email: [email protected]: www.TeethWhitening.BeautyDentalChicago.com

How much whiter your teeth will be after you whiten them is measured by shades. It’s said that your teeth can be whitened by as many as 9 or more shades when you whiten your teeth, but most people aren’t likely to see this dramatic of a result.

Those who get their teeth whitened in a dentist’s office are most likely to find that their teeth will be anywhere from 2 to 7 shades lighter, while those who whiten their teeth at home may be disappointed to find that they only get one shade lighter, or even less.

There is an actual measuring device used to measure how many shades lighter the teeth have become. These are called shade guides and are simply hand-held color palettes that have many different shades of white and yellow on them, grouped from lightest to darkest.

The dentist can help you determine what shade your teeth currently fall under on the guide, and will show you on the shade guide what you can expect after the treatment.

3. Different Types of Teeth Whitening Kits and Why You Should Be Careful

Many think that whitening their teeth at home is easier and just as effective as getting it done in a dentist’s office. Truthfully, neither is the case. The procedure in the dentist’s office is very easy, it does not take a long time, and it is painless. And whichever type of teeth whitening kit you buy, it’s not going to be as effective as getting the procedure done by a professional dentist.

6

• Teeth Whitening Tray Kits: These kits come with a tray and a tube of whitening gel. The gel is squeezed into the tray and then the tray is placed into the mouth, with the user biting into the tray to ensure that the whitening gel is covering all of their teeth. Trays come in one-size-fits-all and many users find it uncomfortable; those with a sensitive gag reflex will find these trays especially difficult to use. It’s also nearly impossible to do anything else while you are whitening your teeth.

• Teeth Whitening Strip Kits: The biggest drawback to teeth whitening strip kits is that they are only meant to be worn on the front teeth, meaning that your back teeth won’t get any whitening benefit, and your teeth may be noticeably different colors. Also, the strips will only work on the areas they touch.

• Teeth Whitening Gels come in a small tube that contains a gel with peroxide in it. The gel should be applied onto teeth, allowed to dry and then rinsed off. The biggest advantage the gel has over other some other types of whitening kits is that they can reach all areas of the mouth. However, this is still dependent on the user making sure that they have covered all areas of the teeth.

• Teeth Whitening Toothpastes: These days, just about every brand of toothpaste has one that they specify as having ‘whitening’ powers. However, if you’re looking for toothpaste to significantly whiten your teeth, it’s just not going to happen.

4. How is Professional Teeth Whitening Done?: 5 Steps

Many people are hesitant to even try going to the dentist to get their teeth whitened because they’ve been afraid of the dentist their entire lives. However, that’s no reason to stop you from having a beautiful smile and you’ll probably be surprised to find out that this visit will not be like your other dentist visits.

1. The process will begin with the dentist scrubbing and polishing the teeth with pumice. This is a grainy material removes any plaque from the teeth so that the whitening solution can work directly on the teeth.

2. After this polishing, gauze will then be placed in and around the entire mouth to keep the teeth dry during the procedure. Retractors or a dental dam may also be used to keep the lips, cheeks, and tongue away from the whitening solution. A barrier of some sort will also be placed along the gums to ensure that the whitening solution does not touch it.

3. The hydrogen peroxide whitening solution is then applied to the front of every tooth. Some products may need a laser or curing light to activate the solution while others don’t. The solution will then be left on for anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. Depending on the brand, the solution may have to be reapplied and touched up in timely increments throughout the process.

4. The dentist will then check back to see what shade the teeth currently are. The whitening gel is removed at the appropriate time by rinsing it off. A fluoride treatment may also be necessary, which helps strengthen the teeth after the whitening process.

5. The dentist will then instruct you as to how to properly care for your teeth to avoid re-staining. Highly pigmented foods such as red wine, tomato sauce and coffee, and tobacco products are to be strictly avoided for 24 hours while the enamel pores close, and should only be consumed in moderation after that time.

Getting your teeth whitened in a dentist’s office is definitely going to cost you more upfront than any over-the-counter teeth whitening kits. But, when you consider how much more effective this procedure is, and how seldom you’ll need to have it done, it’s worth the investment!

5. Professional Take-Home Teeth Whitening Kits

But they’re wrong! These kits are extremely effective at whitening your teeth and can be done with the professionalism of a dentist, but in the comfort of your own home.

They generally need to be used for one to two weeks and include a custom-fit tray, which will not only be more comfortable for all users, but will also make sure that there is very little contact between the bleaching agent and the sensitive gum area. But, even these kits often mean an initial appointment in the dentist’s chair.

The trays usually need to be worn for an hour every day over a two-week period of time. After the two weeks they can then be used for touch-up applications. Some trays have the ability to be worn overnight, which some think is more convenient. Also at this initial appointment, a follow-up appointment will be made so that the dentist can check to see the shade of the teeth, and can evaluate the effectiveness of the whitening process.

Contact your local dentist to find out more about the procedure and costs of these kits.

8

If you feel as though you really don’t have time to go to the dentist, or you just really hate sitting in that dreaded chair while he works on your mouth, you might want to speak to your dentist about professional take-home teeth whitening kits.

Many people think that these are the same type of kits that you’ll get in the drugstore, just that they’re much more expensive.

6. The Risks of Teeth Whitening

Sensitivity

Bleaching can sometimes cause teeth to become sensitive to touch, temperature, and pressure shortly afterwards. Although some may claim that this is most likely going to occur in a dentist’s office, because a higher concentration of bleaching agent is used, this is just not true. In fact, sensitivity is much more likely to happen with OTC kits because people tend to overuse the product, which breaks down the protective enamel on the teeth.

Irritated Gums

This is something else that is most likely to happen with OTC whitening kits. When the bleaching agent touches the gums it can cause irritation, inflammation, and sometimes a stinging or burning sensation. This is most likely to happen with OTC kits because it’s difficult for amateur users to be precise enough, and because OTC teeth trays don’t provide the limited room needed to ensure that the teeth can still be whitened without causing the gums any ill effects.

Technicolor Teeth

This can happen with either OTC kits or in a dentist’s office. Teeth may be slightly different colors after the teeth whitening process. This happens because some dental fixtures such as crowns, bonding, and veneers aren’t affected by teeth whitening products and so will remain the same color after the treatment. In order to get these the same color as your ‘new’ teeth, you’ll need to have these treatments taken out and redone.

9

Whenever you’re going to be placing potentially harsh chemicals in your mouth, there are some potential risks and side effects. However, you are much more likely to experience these with over-the-counter kits than you will with either a professional kit, or in a dentist’s office.

This is because dentists are much more trained in applying the whitening agent properly, and they also have the tools available to be able to do it. Still, here are some of the risks that you may experience with any type of teeth whitening.

7. 6 Common Questions about Teeth Whitening

Q: Is whitening permanent?

A: No. Even if you get your whitening procedure done in a dentist’s office, the effects will not be permanent. If you continue to consume highly-pigmented foods, you may find that your teeth begin to stain as quickly as one month after the treatment. However, if you avoid or reduce these types of foods after your treatment, the whitening effects could last as long as one year before a reapplication or touch-up is needed.

Q: Can pregnant women whiten their teeth?

A: It’s not recommended that women who are expecting whiten their teeth. There are certain chemicals in whitening and bleaching agents that may be harmful to the unborn fetus and there’s just not enough research available about the long-term affects.

Q: I have dental insurance. Will that cover the cost of my procedure?

A: No. In most cases, dental insurance does not cover the cost of teeth whitening procedures.

Q: Do teeth whitening agents cause the enamel on my teeth to break down more quickly?

A: Studies have been done on this and it’s been proven that the chemicals in teeth whitening agents do not cause any softening or wearing of the enamel on the teeth.

Q: Will teeth whiteners damage the current dental restorations I have in my mouth?

A: The chemicals in teeth whiteners are not strong enough to cause any damage to restorations like veneers, crowns, or bridges. However, these restorations also will not lighten, so may need to be replaced after the whitening procedure has been completed.

Q: Do teeth whiteners damage the nerves of teeth?

A: A lot of research has been done about the long-term effects of teeth whitening. Patients were studied 4-7 years after having their teeth whitened and results found that no patients needed a root canal within this period of time after the teeth whitening, and that no damage to the nerve occurred because of such a procedure.

10

Even when you make the decision to see a dentist for your teeth whitening needs, there are bound to still be a few more questions. Here are some of the most common questions and answers about teeth whitening!

8. 7 Questions to Ask Your Dentist Before Getting Your Teeth Whitened

Q: Should I get my teeth cleaned before I get them whitened?

A: Any dentist should recommend that you get a professional cleaning before having your teeth whitened. Temporary stains may be removed during this cleaning, and it will help the whitening process be more effective, as it will not just be cleaning the grit on top of your teeth.

Q: Do I need to get cavities filled before I can get my teeth whitened?

A: This is an absolute must! You need to get any cavities filled before getting your teeth whitened so that the bleaching agent doesn’t irritate the cavity. But more importantly than that, if you have cavities in your mouth, there are bigger issues your teeth are facing than stains!

Q: Will whitening work for me?

A: Some noticeably discolored teeth will not be affected by whitening agents, even if they’re not part of restorative work. Your dentist will be able to advise you as to whether the discoloration you’re experiencing will be helped by teeth whitening or not.

Q: What type of bleaching or whitening agent do you use and what are the side effects?

A: Different dentists will use different brands of whitening agents and it’s important to know which one will be used for your treatment. If a dentist tells you there won’t be any side effects, find another dentist! There’s always a chance for slight sensitivity afterwards and they should be upfront about it.

Q: If something goes wrong, am I responsible for paying to make it right?

A: You shouldn’t have to pay for anything that goes wrong during the procedure. However, ‘what goes wrong’ is open to interpretation. If it’s a simple matter that you’re not happy with the shade, you will most likely have to come back for another treatment – and pay to have it done.

Q: Can I pay in installments?

A: Having a teeth whitening procedure done by a dentist can be very expensive and not a lot of people have that kind of pocket money. Ask if you can pay in instalments so that you can still have beautiful, healthy teeth, but don’t have to sacrifice your savings up front.

Q: Do you have any before and after photos I can look at?

A: Because no dentist can give you a guarantee on how a treatment will work for you, asking to see before and after photos will give you a better idea of what you can expect.
