FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Several years ago when the movie “Julie and Julia” was released, Father Michael and I went to see it. While there are some great lines in the movie, one of my all-time favorites comes from the lips of Meryl Streep as Julia Child when she proclaims, “Happy Birthday to me!” While I love celebrating everyone’s birthday, I’d rather fly under the radar when it comes to mine. So that line in particular tickled me so much in the theater that I couldn’t stop laughing for a good fifteen minutes after it was spoken. Since then, Father Michael has used that line every year (using, of course, “Julia’s” voice), eliciting the same response.

It’s no wonder, then, that as we celebrate this Pentecost Sunday, the “birthday of the Church,” I’m tickled over and again thinking about the Universal Church saying, “Happy Birthday to me!” It’s that same kind of joy that is almost palpable in our church as we feel those drops (okay, waves) of water hitting us this week. But this sprin-kling this week is that final connection for this Easter season that reminds us of the joy of our baptism, our recom-mitment in the faith through the power of the Holy Spirit, and the countless blessings and graces that this same Spirit bestows on us. As I retire the broom for yet another year, we pray that the Holy Spirit doesn’t retire His ben-efits to us!

I’m looking forward to this year’s Confirmation with our young adults. As the age of Confirmation lowers during these next few years, I have to say that the insights I’ve read in the letters from these young men and women have been amazing. Unless they’ve learned only the terminology (which I strongly doubt), they have a grasp on the faith that is really gratifying. Of course, they’ve all promised to continue their journey in the faith through Mass attend-ance and service to the community. The proof will be in their follow through. I am confident that many of them will, indeed, continue to practice the faith because they have been doing so consistently with the support of their families. For those who have perhaps been more faithful to class than to the larger experience of the Church, I pray that they will really be empowered by the Holy Spirit to learn more and to become involved. In my experience, those who become active in the community of faith—even from a young age—are those who continue to practice the faith because the community becomes a part of the extended family. To our young people (and I know some of you are reading this because you’ve quoted things back to me), I encour-age you to become very involved in your parish and to, perhaps, serve as mentors for those who are still trying to figure out their place in the Church.

In just a few weeks, we’ll be putting out a call for new altar servers. As you know, we have servers of all ages—from young children through senior citizens. While I’m ready to welcome anyone of any age, I’m also relying on some of our children who just received First Holy Communion to consider this ministry. More than once I’ve looked at parents of servers as they process in and out of church, and what do I see? Pride in their children and pride in their participation in the life of the community. And the prize that tops all others is when I hear their par-ents say, “and I don’t have to force them to get up for Mass!”

So, if this is really the birthday of the Church, we see how the Church brings forth new life—in our children who are presented to us in baptism, in those who have entered the Church through RCIA, to boys and girls, teens, and adults who roll up their sleeves and say, “I want to be a part of this.” The Church is renewed in each and we are re-freshed knowing that the faith continues to be strong in the hearts of those who are willing to give of their time and energy to Christ.

Maybe today is not a “Happy Birthday to me!” day, but it is certainly a “Happy Birthday to us!” day. And if we’re truly willing to celebrate today, then be prepared for the gifts of the Holy Spirit beyond your imagining!

Until next week...God bless! Father Joe

REFLECTING GOD’S GENEROSITY

TO US

Offertory: $ 6,802.50 Online Giving: $ 3,979.00 Total: $ 10.781.50

Ascension (includes online): $ 653.00 Catholic Communications: $ 1,124.00

Thank you for your continued generosity to our par-ish. Our weekly budget for the parish is $11,900.

We took a rather serious “hit” this weekend with our collection. Can you help us to keep our budget in check? We’re starting to experience a confusing, and quite honestly, frightening trend. We are definitely tightening our belts, but there’s only so much “tighter” we can go.

If you are preparing to travel for the summer, won’t you please consider online giving so that we can re-main on target even if you’re away? Thank you!

SANCTUARY LAMPS

+Mary and Chester Sojka

Did you know that we have several opportunities for marking significant events and people with the candles in the sanctuary, near the statues of Our Lady, the Sa-cred Heart and Saint John Vianney? Would you like your intentions remembered at the Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa or Divine Mercy? Contact the office for more information at 603.882.7793.

SAINT KATHRYN RELIGIOUS GOODS

This week we decided to veer away from our custom of making sure everyone is informed about our newest book or the latest devotional item we have in the store. This week we would simply like to say “thank you” to each and every customer who has contributed to mak-ing the store in our parish such a success. Your com-ments and feedback have been most uplifting to every-one who is part of the ministry. Last weekend one of our customers made a special effort to let us know how helpful and cheerful our volunteers are. We are always gratified by comments about the variety of items we carry and will continue to try and satisfy as many needs as possible. Again, our parish family has been blessed by each and every person who has come in and supported the out-reach effort of the store. Without you we wouldn’t be here and would not be able to continue our work. God Bless.

FAITH FACTS

Do you remember all of the cool things you learned about the Holy Spirit when you were being prepared for Confirmation? Remember the seven gifts of the Ho-ly Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. Then there are the fruits of the Holy Spirit, which include joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Hmmm—on this Pentecost Sunday, maybe we really need to pray that we receive those gifts of the Spirit anew and that His fruits will be poured out on all the world! By the way, did you know that the cover of today’s bul-letin is one of our own stained glass windows? Look in the chapel vestibule and see this beautiful window!

UPCOMING JUBILEE EVENTS

There are many, many events in the near future to celebrate our Golden Jubilee as a parish. Today, there will be a Cham-pagne Brunch served after the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Masses in the parish hall; the Rosary, in collaboration with Operation Storm Heaven, will be recited on Friday, June 1 following the

And, of course, keep October 6, 2018 open. Bishop Libasci will celebrate the 4:00 p.m. Mass on that day to open our year of celebration for the Jubilee. You don’t want to miss that event! It’s going to be a busy summer with our regular schedule and Jubilee Events, so plan to join us for as many as you can!

PENTECOST SUNDAY

CONFIRMATION AT SAINT KATHRYN’S

Bishop Francis Christian will administer the sacrament of Confirmation to twenty-eight of our tenth graders and one candidate from another parish on Thursday, May 31 at 7:00 p.m. Please join us in praying for these twenty-nine young people that the fullness of the Holy Spirit will come upon them and empower them to con-tinue to proclaim the Gospel through their lives and words. Rehearsal for Confirmation will take place on Tuesday, May 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the church. Candidates and sponsors (or a proxy) are required to attend.

SISTER FERNANDE PERREAULT, P.M.

We are saddened to announce the passing of Sister Fer-nande Perreault (Sister Fern) on Wednesday, May 16. Sister Fern has been a “fixture” at Saint Kathryn’s and the House of Formation for the Presentation Sisters here in Hudson for many years. As you know, Sister Fern was transferred to the infirmary for the Sisters back in December. With hope and confidence in the resurrection, we com-mend our dear Sister to the Lord. May His words as she awoke to glory be none other than those of the Master: “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her!

DOINGS AROUND THE PARISH

There are many projects happening around the parish that we want to keep you aware of as we prepare for the summer. If you’ve used the restrooms in the church, you will have noticed that we now have commercial grade com-modes that are more water efficient and fill quickly. Ladies, after all you have endured over the last several months with the restroom, we have finally corrected the problem. The pump for the waterfall by the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes has been replaced by an industrial pump. The water is now moving much quicker, so please keep the children from playing in or near the fountain. Hopeful-ly, we will not need to replace this pump for many years. We expect (hope) that all of the classrooms will be painted this summer and perhaps (cost will be a factor) the addition of some window treatments to allow us to block some of the sun. So far, we have two thumbs up for our HVAC and fire suppression systems, the roof and lighting in the church and parking lot. Homeowners—we empathize!
