1.50 A European perspective in respect of two of the Key Challenges surrounding the roll out of Smart Grids• EU draft cyber security directive

- Increased IT expenditure: - Conflicting obligations: - Objection against mandatory reporting- Launch of Cyber Information Sharing Partnership (CISP)

• EU draft regulation to reduce broadband costs- Cost Controls- It is recognised that the largest single cost component is

civil engineering - up to 80% - Enhancing transparency and coordination of civil engineering

works;- Handling requests to rollout networks in a more efficient and

transparent way;- Ensuring the EU is ready for Next Generation Access

buildings; and- Making a better use of existing infrastructure, including

across utilities - Industry Thoughts

2.30 Introducing Project Falcon Project Falcon is a major LCNF project led by Western PowerDistribution. It aims to explore methods for coping withincreased demand for electricity. Traditionally, increaseddemand for electricity has been handled using reinforcement -essentially making the network stronger, for example withthicker cables. Project Falcon will test six alternatives toreinforcement• What we set out to do, challenges and lessons learnt• How a wireless IP communications network based on WiMax

has been designed to accommodate the differentrequirements including, monitoring, control and low latencyapplications such as tele-protection

• WPD’s future plans and what we think it’ll mean to otherDNOs

11.40 Using EE's superfast networks for smart grids and smart metering:• EE is uniquely positioned in the UK marketplace with our low

latency 4G network already available in many of our UK cities, reinforcing the widest reaching 2G/ 3G network. EE’scapabilities provide a wide and diverse spectrum allocation tomeet varying application requirements

• We're turbo-charging our superfast network to make it evenbetter. Later this year, we'll be able to offer top speeds of upto 130Mbps, and we will be regularly averaging 20Mbps.Industry case examples.

• Our ambition is to give our customers the best network, withthe capacity to deliver the best service, hence empowering allSmart Grid stakeholders to deliver to their customers.

• We are taking a partnering approach for utilities, where weactively foster ecosystems built on our networks. This meansthat we are able to quickly offer the reach and scaleability ofour network combined with the diversity of new technologiesevolving in the utilities arena.
