What is discrimination?
Discrimination, also called selectivity, is the coordination of automatic
protection devices in such a manner that a fault appearing at a given point
in a network is cleared by the protection device installed immediately
before the fault, and by that device alone.

Total discrimination:
Discrimination is said
to be total if, for all
fault current values,
from overloads up to
the short-circuit
current, CB1* will
open while CB2* will
remain closed.
Partial discrimina-
tion: Discrimination is
partial if CB1 will open
up to the selectivity
limit current, after
which both CB1 and
CB2 will open.
No discrimination:
You are not able to
know which breaker
will trip first; the
upstream, the
downstream or both
at the same time.
Types of discrimination
� Current discrimination:
� secures selectivity at the overload protection curve.
� selectivity is reached by differentiating between CB1 & CB2 trip units current.
� CB1 trip unit ( lower setting ), CB2 trip unit ( longer time delay ).
� as an example, in Merlin Gerin Compact NS, discrimination is ensured if the ratio between CB1 &
CB2 short-circuit thresholds is greater than 1.5 .
� Time discrimina-
tion:
� secures selectivity
at the low short-circuit
protection curve.
� discrimination is
reached by adjusting
the trip unit time delay
( solid state trip units
only ).
� Energy discrimination:
� secures selectivity at the high short-circuit protection curve.
� selectivity is reached by using two circuit breakers sensitive to the energy dissipated in the device
by the short-circuit, provided by the reflex tripping technology.
� in case of a high short-circuit, the energy dissipated in CB2 is not enough to trip it. On the other
hand, the energy dissipated is sufficient to trip CB1.
� as an example, in Merlin Gerin Compact NS, discrimination is ensured in the ratio between CB2 &
CB1 ratings is greater than 2.
� reflex tripping technology is only used by Merlin Gerin ( patent ) for MCCB type Compact NS.

o assure the protection of your motor starters, Telemecanique introduces GV2 motor circuit breakers. It complies to
IEC 947-2 & IEC 947-4 and has a wide range of accessories, all can be mounted on top, front or sides of the GV2.

� GV2-L ( magnetic 50 to 100 kA ) : these products are 3 poles devices
and provide short circuit protection. They are suitable for isolating
functions, however, for motor control, these units are generally used in
conjunction with a contactor and thermal overload relay.
� GV2-M ( thermal magnetic 15 to 100 kA ) with
a start stop push button operation: These are
normally used for local control of motors, but
may also be used in conjunction with a contactor
to provide a remote control function. These
products are ideal for controlling small, stand alone
machines such as wood working machines, ...etc.

with a rotary operation

normally used for

LT6
T6 is a multifunction protection relay.
It conforms to IEC standards. The LT6 :
� controls all types of
motors starting either
by local control or by
remote control.
� monitors the correct
operation of devices
controlling the motor
via discrete inputs.
� gives an early
warning of stoppage
by an alarm indicating
the thermal state of
the motor.
� communicates
using standards such
as UNI-TELWAY or
Jbus/Modbus, with
programmable
controllers and
supervisors for both
control and diagnostic.
Using the simple adjustment on the front face of
the relay, LT6 can be set to meet your needs and
assure effective protection against thermal
overload, abnormal temperature-rise, ...etc.
To adapt to your application, a configuration
software can be used to adjust and activate the
protection parameters.
ATV18
s a speed drive ( frequency inverter ) for 3
phases asynchronous squirrel cage motors, the
Altivar 18 incorporates the latest drive
technologies .
Robust and compact, conforming to international
standards, ATV18 is a universal product covering
from 0.5 to 20HP .
Varplus M
arplus M capacitors can protect against low
current faults by the over pressure disconnect
device, high current fault by HRC fuse, over
voltage ( voltage < 50V in 1 minute) by the
internal discharge resistance.

range covers a wide
range of network
voltages from 230 to
690V.
� M1 standard range
(400V): 5 to 15 Kvar.
� M4 standard range
(400V): 50 to 60 Kvar.

Tested Assemblies ( TTA ) and Partially Type-
Tested Assemblies ( PTTA ). Defines the Form
of construction ( i.e. level of security ): Form
1, 2, 3 and 4, where Form 4 is the highest level
of security.
