Expert Review Group – Report A summary of the ERG Report into the standards of student achievement at Upper Swan has been published on the Schools Online website. To access a copy of the report, follow these steps. 1. Go to the Schools Online website - http://www.det.wa.edu.au/schoolsonline/home.do 2. Enter Upper Swan into the Find a School section. 3. Click on List Schools – Upper Swan’s page will come up 4. There is a menu bar on the left hand side. About half way down the menu it says Expert Review Report. 5. Click on Expert Review Report and it should download for you.

Report Findings The report has nine findings. They mostly centre on the following points: The school has a positive image in the community. Parents appreciate the work that has

been done with the social and emotional well being of students. Standards of student achievement need to improve, particularly in Reading and Writing. There needs to be more effective processes in place to enable teachers to fully

understand expected standards of achievement processes that enable consistent whole school approaches to be in place from K to 7.

We need to have more effective change management processes. The school’s vision needs to be translated into classroom action. The quality of teaching in Science and Society and Environment needs to improve. There needs to be more effective processes in place to meet the needs of students at risk

and talented students. Teachers and students need to make greater use ICT.

Prescribed Improvement Strategies The ERG has listed seven non-negotiable improvement strategies. All seven strategies link to the findings. The report informs the school of what has to be done. It is up to the school to plan how things will be done.

There is a two year implementation timeline that is approximately as follows: 6 weeks (end of September): Draft 1 of our improvement plan is presented to the District

Director 3 months (end of November): The improvement plan is finalised and presented to the

District Director. Parts of the plan may have been implemented. 6 months (~March 2013): The improvement plan is fully operational. 2 years (~August 2014): The ERG returns for a one day visit to determine if the

improvement strategies have been successful.

The report has made all staff aware we have some complex challenges to tackle as we strive to transform our school from good to great.

Year 1, Room 7 Assembly Congratulations to the marvellous year 1 students from room 7. We enjoyed listening to their entertaining poem and song about dragons. At the end we got to see the fabulous dragon puppets the children had made. After the assembly parents and family members joined in some games and activities with their children. More photos can be found on the school website. http://www.upperswanps.wa.edu.au/

Does Your Child Need Medication? For the safety and well being of your child, schools have procedures to follow when administering medication to your children. Whether medication is required for one day, week, month or year; there is a form that parents must complete before staff can help with giving the child their medicine. Please read the attached information. Open up the forms then save them to your computer so you have them on hand if you ever need them. They are available from reception. Correction to Faction Cross Country Results My apologies for making a few errors with the results of the faction cross country.

Faction Athletics Carnival – 14 and 21 September This is a reminder that jumps, throws and some longer sprint races will be held throughout the day on Friday, September 14. Traditional team games, relays and individual races will take place from 9:00am on Friday, September 21. The canteen will be open to parents for morning tea and their will be a special lunch order available as well.

Room 15 “G” Day: 28/8/12 Today was “g” day in the room 15 kindy class; where children learned all about the letter “g”, the sounds it makes and the words it is in. Being Mr G, I had the great opportunity to visit your children and share a well known Mem Fox story called “Where is the Green Sheep?” I was most impressed with the listening skills and excellent manners your children displayed.

Assembly – Room 10 The year 5/6, room 10, assembly has been postponed until Friday, 7 September. Healthy Living / Healthy Lifestyle Day at Upper Swan Primary, Wednesday 26 September Keep you eyes open for information about the healthy lifestyle day we’re hosting on the 28 of September. A wide range of activities will be held throughout the day for parents and students. The whole idea of the day is to promote the value of healthy eating and having an active lifestyle. Please keep the day free. We would love to see you there. Class Photos – Thursday 2h September Please be aware this is our photo day. I would like to see all children wearing their best school uniform; this is their red shirt, blue “bottoms” and the school jumper or jacket if it’s cold. Year 7’s should wear their graduation shirt as their group photo will be taken on this day. They should also have their red shirts, as there are two photos taken, a formal and an informal.

Dear Parent/Carers: We would like to seek your assistance in establishing a process for managing the administration of medication to students when they are in the school’s care. Except in an extreme emergency, e.g. unexpected anaphylaxis, medication can only be administered by school staff if appropriate documentation has been completed by parents/carers. This applies to both prescribed and non-prescribed medication.

Short Term Use of Medication (up to two weeks) For administration of short term medication such as a course of antibiotics, our school requires written authority from parents/carers. This authority can be provided by completing an Administration of Medication form. These forms can be obtained from the school administration office or downloaded from the school’s website. Alternatively, parents/carers may complete the attached form. Note:

• The medication must be clearly labelled with the child’s name and provided in packaging from the pharmacy or the manufacturer.

• Documentation must be signed and dated by a parent or carer and provided to the school with the medication.

Long Term Use of Medication If you require the school to administer medication to your child for a period of more than two weeks, and if you have not already done so, you may need to complete a Student Health Care Summary and a Management/Emergency Response Plan for your child’s particular health need. In most instances, this documentation will have been completed when you enrolled your child or as part of the school’s process for updating student health care records. If this is not the case, please discuss with the school administration office. Thank you for your help. Yours sincerely PRINCIPAL (see form next page)
