PRACTICE SCHEDULE

KICKOFF MEETING

Our first spring practice is scheduled for April 8th at the Milwaukee Yacht Club. We will continue to

practice every Wednesday at MYC until our last regatta of the season, which could be ICSA Nationals

at the end of May. Practice this semester will focus heavily on developing the skills of our competitive

sailors, with an end goal of competing in College Sailing Nationals. Wednesdays will be our main

racing-intensive practice days, and we will train from 2:30 p.m. until sunset. If there is bad weather on

a Wednesday, we will still meet at Milwaukee Yacht Club to breakdown scenarios and talk strategy on

the whiteboard. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons are also available for team practices; we will

gauge demand for these days during our kickoff meeting on April 2nd. Be there to voice your opinion.

Join us at our Spring Season Kickoff Meeting.

Social event to follow at Hannah's house.

Alumni and prospective sailors are welcome.

Embroider your gear with the UW-Milwaukee Sailing Team burgee! Just come to the Kickoff Meeting with your

gear. Embroidery is $10 per burgee per item, with an extra cost for names. We'll embroider it, then you can

pick it up near campus 2 weeks later. ‣‣Think t-shirts, sailing shorts, flannel shirts, board shorts, hats, baby

onesies, socks, sweaters, towels, buffs, hoodies, and more.

SPRING TRAINING RECAP The team spent week sailing with the dolphins on the Gulf of Mexico in St. Petersburg, Florida. We hired

a paid coach for the first time in team history; during the week, we spent a whopping 36 hours at the

Eckerd College Waterfront either racing or training. We made immense improvements on our boat

handling and team racing skills in Eckerd’s fleet of brand new FJs. Because of this extensive training,

we’re ready to compete in team race regattas this spring–that’s another milestone for the team. We

expect a competitive season, and we hope to qualify for College Sailing Nationals.

While we weren’t busy training, we watched the sunset on beaches, played volleyball and basketball,

explored St Pete area neighborhoods, fished & kayaked on our private lake, spent downtime in our rental

house, swam in the pool, had tooth brushing parties, ate Cuban sandwiches, napped in hammocks, made

homemade pizzas, played cornhole, checked out state parks, biked around Eckerd’s campus, and ate

seafood & ice cream around town. See Spring Training photos here: https://flic.kr/ps/2LnvPv

NELSON ROLTSCHE

INTERCONFERENCE RECAP

Cajun food, street cars, Bourbon Street and College Sailing:

The team kicked off the season in late February by travelling to New Orleans, Louisiana to sail in the Nelson

Roltsch Interconference regatta at Southern Yacht Club. The event was hosted by Tulane University Sailing

Team. This was our second annual trip to NOLA for this regatta. Alongside Notre Dame, UWM represented the

Midwest (MCSA) in a fleet with some of the top teams from the Southeastern (SEISA) conference. Capsizes were

common on Saturday when it blew consistently over 20kts and maxed out at close to 30kts. Sunday was lighter

and playing the shifts became more important to our success. Overall we had a great start to our spring season.

See the official scoreboard and recap here: http://goo.gl/PwcwvD

UWM raced to 2nd place overall: A-Division tied for 1st and B-Division placed 3rd.

ECKERD INTERCONFERENCE RECAP

We kicked off our Spring Training trip to Florida with the Eckerd Interconference regatta. 10 teams from

all around the nation (including fellow MCSA member, Notre Dame) made the trek down to warm, sunny

Florida to compete in the Eckerd Intersectional. Nine races were completed on Saturday in big breeze,

peaking at 14-16 knots. (You know it's windy in St Petersburg when you can see the kite boarders out

by the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.) The apparel of choice for most competitors was shorts and a tech t-

shirt. The weather on Sunday was just as beautiful, but the wind did not show. Racers left the dock at

9:45 to attempt a race. A northerly breeze teased competitors for about 30 minutes but no races were

attempted. Competitors headed back to the dock and spent the next few hours enjoying the sunshine

in postponement. Racing was called off at 1. Thanks to Eckerd Tritons for running a great regatta.

Milwaukee finished in 9th overall against 10 competitive teams, some with full-time

coaches on the water. Out 20 boats, Isak Peterson and Hannah Girard finished in 15th, and

Andre Deriaz, Hannah Noll & Brittni Begale finished in 18th.

2015 Tell Tale: Issue #1

The generous support from Lake Michigan Sailing Federation (LMSRF) and North Sails helped fund our Spring

Training in St. Petersburg, Florida. They covered part of the costs of coaching, boat rentals, housing, and

transportation. Because the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association’s waters are frozen for longer than the rest of

the country's waters, trips to open water during the early spring are crucial for Midwest college sailing teams.

Spring Training was a milestone for the team: Huge thanks to LMSRF and North Sails for getting us there.

Keep the breeze in our sails this spring by financially supporting the team. To donate, email

[email protected] or simply send a check made out to Milwaukee Sailboat Racing

Club to 2833 N. Murray Ave., Milwaukee, WI, 53211.

THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS
