TellTales Attention Members: We will be changing the galley minimum end dates to the 15th of the month for those members whose last names begin with A – L, effective for July 2018. For those affected the date range for the minimums will be from the 16th of one month to the 15th of the next month. Other clubs have successfully implemented this practice, so we don’t anticipate any procedural issues moving forward. The goal is to spread out the use of the galley & bar throughout the entire month. Historically, the club experiences overwhelming volume at the end of the month which has resulted in long wait times, inconsistence food quality, over worked staff and disappointed and/or angry members. This change should enable the galley & bar to operate more efficiently. There will be no alteration to the billing cycles as everyone will receive an invoice at the close of the month as usual, payable on receipt; the only change is the end date for the galley minimum for those last names beginning with A – L. V. Commodore’s ReportEric Kolts

It seems history has a habit of repeating itself. Below is a TellTales arti-cle from 1994…

“This is an article that shouldn’t need to appear in Tell-Tales. lt has to do with respect, manners, and common courtesy. Ninety nine percent of our members (and their guests) don’t need to be reminded of these issues; we learned about them when we were young, we expect others to treat us courteously, and we are courteous to others.

Unfortunately, a very small minority of our members and guests occa-sionally “forget” these basic rules of human behavior. lf you fall into this category, here’s a not-so-gentle reminder: EVERYONE at this Club de-serves your respect and consideration, including our CIub employees. ln the last few weeks, there have been several demeaning actions as well as unacceptable language towards bar and galley personnel. These ac-tions obviously reflect badly on the members involved, but in addition, they reflect badly on the Club as a whole.”

Please help in keeping the yard up by picking up trash and storing your equip-ment. Have you notice the whale in the yard? This special area, in memory of the late and missed Karen Guidi provides life jackets for anyone who needs one, just re-member to return it after using it. Special thanks to the Leitner family for donating the dock box for storing the life jackets and to the talented Krista for creating such a unique piece for us.As I have shared before, one of our big projects for this summer is doing some much needed repair on the bulkhead. We are beginning the evaluation of this proj-ect and I will use this forum to keep you posted as work progresses. We have been advised that nothing should be stored long term within 15 feet of the bulkhead unless it is on a concrete platform. We will be re-organizing the yard slightly in light of this. Transient use of the area for load-ing and unloading boats, and using the crane is fine. That’s all for now, I wish you all a wonder-ful sailing season.

A Tribute in memory of the sadly missed Karen Guidi

May is upon us, the Club is official open for the season, and slowly but surely the mooring field is filling up. Many thanks to Anne Myer and everyone who helped for getting us started with a successful launch.

Michael Lusty, Race Chair, has set us up for a fun and competitive season of racing. If you have not checked them out already, please review the Notices of Race on the Racing page of the website. Please note, the events are also posted to the website but the NORs contain the official start time for each race. We are also trying out a new App for the scoring of club races, which should make the posting and calculation of results much more efficient. After racing on Wednesday Nights results will be sent to the Skippers Group as soon as they are completed and posted to the website within 24 hours.

Many thanks to Mark Daddino, Hydee and Pete Teresi, Krista McCaffery and Mark Rebovich for their help in installing the pri-vacy slats along the back fence. Additional thanks to the Yard Birds, Hydee and Krista, for all the work they have done in planing flower and making the yard look beautiful.

Spring Lighthouse Regatta

ESCAPADE 1stThere was no second!

A Drifter to say the leastSix boats unable to finish the

Spring Lighthouse Race

The Spring Lighthouse Race at RYC proved to be a light air wake up call for seven RYC racers at the beginning of this sea-son. This 25.5 NM course offered, as BlueNote Skipper Gary Nackman commented, an unpredictable ebb current due to re-cent rains at the start, with no wind. Heading to Great beds. Anthony O Sullivan of Starry Night commented “forward mo-mentum was as much dictated by the outgoing tide than by any breeze”.

Eventually the racers made their way to Romar Shoals with the fleet split between “southerly approach… and the more direct route closer to the middle of the Bay” explained O’Sul-livan. Al Rothschild of Escapade commented “the middle to a bit north seemed to have the most live spots and filled in first”. as they headed to Romar A blast of a storm then hit the fleet with gusty winds and a heavy downpour that lasted about 15 minutes according to Anthony aboard Starry Night.as he approached Romar. Escapade, seeing the storm approaching took down their jib and were prepared for the squall as they sailed towards West Bank.

Several boats at this point decided to call it a day. As de-scribed by Gary Nackman racing on BlueNote, “a challenge from Romar to West Bank against a 1 knot current and only 4 knots of breeze”. They, like most others decided to call it a day. When asked of Escapade; Where there any thoughts of giving up? Al’s answer “Nope, my crew would have thrown me over-board and continued without me”.

A notable race for Escapade, as even when approaching the finish and not knowing that others had dropped out “we were still looking behind to see who might be catching up” as they drifted across the line al-most 8 hours after the start.

Pease visit page 7 for more detail of Escapade’s day written by Alan Rothschild.

(This modifies rule 7.4 in the General Sailing Instructions)

Then the breeze began to gradually fill in ahead, getting to us first, enabling us to build on our lead as Godoy continued his excellent helming and gleefully rounded first T, then Great Beds, then Z. Then, with me on the helm for the final leg, the wind began to die as we fought a strong current out of the Arthur Kill. Within 300 yards of the finish, the wind went dead and we were actually getting swept backwards! Trying every sail combo possi-ble, we finally got a wisp of wind, managed to get Escapade drifting in the right direction, and barely crawled across the line at a speed of 0.5 knots. Our elapsed total time was 7 hours, 44 minutes, 43 seconds - the best time by far since we later discovered all other boats had withdrawn and motored in. Nevertheless, a win is a win is a win! It was a great day on our high strung, but magnificent Escapade!

Escapade & The Spring Lighthouse

By Al Rothschild...Skipper of Escapade

“Opus took the lead after a confusing start, with Poppy, Hornet, and Escapade not far behind. Up went the spinnakers since the wind was mostly from the north - though quite light - around 3 or 4 knots.Magic got the worst of the confusion at the start, but slowly worked themselves up into the pack during the leg from Great Beds LH to T, while Opus now lagged after going a bit more south and losing whatever wind there was. Meanwhile, the rest of the fleet - Gyre, Blue Note, and several others struggled to even reach Great Beds. After mark T, Hornet turned on the jets - or at least found bet-ter wind - and built up an impressive lead as they began to work the south side of the bay along with Poppy and Magic. Opus and Escapade seemed to see better pressure in the middle of the bay - and though there were some disheartening lulls, our new spin-naker enabled us to work with what little breeze there was. We gradually pulled away from Opus and slowly made up ground on Hornet, Magic, and Poppy. By Romer Shoals LH, with Mike Lusty at the helm steering precisely toward patches of breeze, and Dafydd Chandler meticulously playing the spinnaker, we had built up a lead of more than a mile. After rounding Romer Shoals LH, a strong squall blew thru with gusts of 20+ from multiple directions. Fortunately, we had seen the storm coming and Andy Englebrecht, our intrepid foredeck man, and Dafydd had efficiently ripped down the jib just as the winds built. After the squall, the winds went light and fluky before finally settling in mostly from the southeast, enabling us to re-hoist the jib, round West Bank LH, and start sailing slowly toward T and RYC, with Magic now as our closest competitor - though still about a mile behind. With Mike Godoy now on helm, we kept a loose cover on Magic, who seemed to be maintaining the gap - but not catching up - as Andy and Dafydd and Lusty enthusiastically struggled through multiple sail changes to work the variable winds to best advantage”. !
