II.- European Union

III.- Objectives

IV.- Evaluation criteria

I.1.- LOCATION

Europe is between the Atlantic Ocean and the Artic Ocean and between Asia and Africa.

Europe has an area of 10’4 millions of Km2

I.2.- BORDERS

The borders of Europe are:

· In the West: The Atlantic Ocean

· In the East: The Ural mountains, the Ural river and the Caspian sea.

· In the North: The Artic ocean

· In the South: The Caucasus mountains, the Black sea and the Mediterranean sea.

I.3.- RELIEF

The relief of Europe is varied:

· In Northern and Central Europe are the very old mountains.

They are in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Scandinavian peninsula ( Scandinavian mountains), Germany and France ( the Massif Central).

· In Central Europe is the European Central Plain. It has a triangular shape, from the Atlantic Ocean to Ural Mountains.

· In the South, there are the young mountains: The Alps, Betic systems, Pyrenees, Carpathian mountains and Apennines. The are very high mountains.

I.3.1.- Rivers and Lakes

In Europe there are a lot of rivers. The most important are the Danube and the Ural.

· The main river of the Artic watershed is the Northem Dvina.

· The main rivers of the Atlantic watershed are the Vistula, the Elbe, the Rhine, The Seine end the Tajo.

· The main river of the Mediterranean watershed is the Ebro.

Ebro river

· The main rivers that flow into the Black sea are the Don and the Danube.

· The main rivers that flow into the Caspian sea are the Volga ( the longest river in Europe) and the Ural.

· The most important lakes in Europe are the Ladoga and the Onega

I.3.2.- Activities

1.- Draw a map of Europe and draw the borders, the oceans and the seas that sorround them.

2.- Write one peninsula in the North of Europe and two in the South.

3.- Observe the map and write five islands of the European continent.

4.- Draw two straight lines: the first line is from Cape North to Cape Matacan ( South of Greece), and the second line is from Cape Saint Vicent to Ural Mountains. What reliefs ( mountains, plains, plateaux, rivers, etc.) cross each line?.

5.- Write two European rivers of the Mediterranean watershed and two of the Atlantic watershed.

I.4.- CLIMATE

I.4.1.- Cold climates

► Polar climates (with permanent ice).

· Location: The north of the Artic Circle. Europe has a very small area with a polar climate: Northem Russia and parts of Scandinavia.

· Temperature: Always below zero, at times can reach minus 50º C.

· Precipitation: Always in the form of snow.

► High mountains climates

· Location: The Alps

· Temperature: Low

· Precipitation: Increases with the altitude

I.4.2.- Temperate climate

Europe is in the temperate climate zone, but has a variety of climates.

► Mediterranean climate

· Location: Mediterranean countries

· Temperature: No extremes winter and in summer it is warm and dry.

· Precipitation: Irregular and low, falling almost always in winter.

► Oceanic climate

· Location: The majority of Europe: The North and the West.

· Temperature: Mild throughout the year due to the effect of the sea.

· Precipitation: High (more than 800mm) and regular throughout the year.

► Continental climate

· Location: Inland and eastern Europe.

· Temperature: Long, cold winter and brief and warm summer.

· Precipitation: Moderate: less than 600mm and falls almost always in winter

I.5.- VEGETATION

There is a large variety of vegetation throughout Europe:

I.5.1.- In the areas of cold climates the characteristic vegetation is the Tundra, and consists of plants adapted to the cold such as moss and lichen.

I.5.2.- In the areas of Mediterranean climate the vegetation consist of Mediterranean forest with Evergreen trees like holm oak, olive tree, rosemary, lavender, etc.

I.5.3.-In the areas of oceanic climate, there are mainly deciduous forests with plants such as oak trees, beech trees, chestnut trees, etc.

I.5.4.-In continental climates, the most common vegetation is rockrose and grassland

I.5.5.- Activities

1.- Find on the map of the world the latitudes of the warm climates.

2.- Complete the chart by filling in the blanks.

3.- Analyse the following climatic series and say which types of climate they are.

Remember you must analyse the climatic series with the next model:

In this climate the annual temperature is_____________

The coldest month is_____________ in (season)_______________

The warmest month is_____________ in (season)______________

The biggest amount of precipitation is in _______________, in (season)____________

The driest month/months is/are _______________________, in (season)____________

So, I think this climate is in the_____________ zone (climatic zone) and it could be a________________ Climate.

4.- Draw a map showing the vegetation formations of Europe.

5.- This is a group activity, and it consists of doing “big posters” of:

· Climate…………. A map of climatic zones

…………. Different graphics of different kind of climates.

· Relief

· Vegetation……….. A map with vegetation of Europe

Important:

Every poster will have a key (colours, symbols, etc.), and a little comment about the subject ( you can find the information inside the unit).

II.- EUROPEAN UNION

In this part of the unit we will use an internet page, where you can find everything about the EU.

http://wizard.4teachers.org/builder/worksheet.php3?ID=43697

II.1.- Activities

1.- Make a poster with a map of European Union specifying years of incorporation of each country (use the same colour for countries that belong to EU from the same year).

2.- Make a poster with a timeline of EU with the most important dates.

3.- Make a poster with the European Union’s Institutions.

· To learn the variety of climates in Europe

· To acknowledge the European vegetation

· To learn the difference between maps of Europe and of the European Union

· To make a map which can be considered a cross-curricular activity as it can be linked to other themes and subjects.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

The student should:

· Create in groups:

· A climate poster with the climatic zones in Europe and with graphics of the

· different kinds of climate.

· A poster of the European relief.

· A poster of vegetation in Europe.

· A poster of the Europe Union with flags, coins, languages and population of each country.

IMPORTANT

Every map or poster will have a key and a brief comment about the subject.
