Temperate Forest

The temperate forest can be found in North American, Europe, Little of Austria, and some parts of Japan and asia.

Average Annual Temperature The average annual temperature for the

temperate forest is 50°F. The temperature in January might drop

to 10°F. In summer, it might be as warm 81°F.

Common seasons

The commons season that are experienced in the temperate forest are summer, winter, spring, and fall

Mountain The Appalachian Mountains are found in the

temperate forest. The Appalachian Mountains was formed in the

Paleozoic era millions of years ago. The Appalachian Mountains are found in north

eastern North America . Mt. Mitchell is the highest mountain in the

Appalachian Mountains. Its elevation is 6,684 ft. The mountains makes the temperature colder on

the other side of the mountains because the air rises over the mountain range gets colder and drops.

Earthquake

8.9-magnitude earthquake hit off the east coast of Japan on March 11, 2011 which is part of the temperate forest.

Soil

Soil: The soil in the deciduous forests is quite fertile, since it is often enriched with falling leaves, twigs, logs, and dead organisms.

The soil also supports the environment with its population of different trees and scrubs.

Growing season

Growing season is a period during which plant growth takes place.

It takes place during the summer and spring months.

Latitude

Some temperate forest can be found at 25° and 50° latitude in both hemispheres.

Page 12: Temperate Forest

Earth’s axis

The temperate forest receives less sunlight in the winter months due to earth’s axis and then allows the temperature to drop.

Since less sun is received, the summer months don't stay warm for long period of time and you see more of the colder temperature.

Natural resources

natural resources including, iron, coal, limestone, shale, oil, gold, silver, copper, lead, and marble are mined out the Appalachian Mountains.

This is a big profit to the owners of mining business and helps the economy a great deal.

What types of pollution effect a temperate forest? Temperate forests are most commonly effected by air

pollution. Gases from factories released into the air go into the atmosphere and when it rains, the rain is acidic. That “acid rain” creates bad water and goes into the soil killing roots of tree’s and other plants.

Page 16: Temperate Forest

What human activities endanger or damage areas of of the temperate forest?

People cut down many tree’s in the temperate forest for paper, and to make space for homes and agriculture. They will burn the area which creates even more pollution. The cutting down of tree’s also destroys the living environment for a large variety of species. This is called deforestation.

Page 17: Temperate Forest

What natural disaster's endanger or damage areas of this biome? If you think about the natural ecosystem in this

biome, you can guess that there are three common natural disaster’s in the temperate forest. They include: Tornadoes, Hurricanes, and Floods. The result of these natural disaster’s is usually fallen tree’s, wet land, and a very scattered misplacement of the biome.

Page 18: Temperate Forest

What sources are there for drinking water?

The temperate forest is a fresh water biome. Inside the forest can be found many streams, and occasionally rivers, ponds, and lakes. Although it is fresh water, and can be used to drink, it is also affected by polluted run-off and may not be suitable for consumption.

What are some of the plant, animals, and other living things in the temperate forest, how do they differ in country to country and from continent to continent?

Page 20: Temperate Forest

What are some of the plant, animals, and other living things in the temperate forest, how do they differ in country to country and from continent to continent? The temperate forest is home to many small variety’s of

life. The rich soil allows the growth of many tree’s/plants like the Pine Fir, Hemlock, Spruce, and Sequoias. Some small plants include poison ivy, and the commonly known “Jagger Bush”. There are mostly mammals, the temperate forest is home to bob cats, and snow leopards which are more near the south. Also, white tailed dear, squirrels, raccoons, and many birds including turkey, pheasants, and robins. The farther west you go, and north, the animals become larger bring in bears, elk, and wolves. There is not much difference between countries/continents because the temperate forest is mostly found in north America and Russia. In Europe new species can be found such as boars and badgers.

Page 21: Temperate Forest

What fruits do the plants bear? Can the plants be used for medicine? The plants bear loved food like walnuts,

apples, mushrooms, raspberries, and maple sugar! One example of a medicine plant is the Taxol from the fruit of the Torreya tree, it is useful in the treatment of certain cancers.

Page 22: Temperate Forest

What are the largest plants and animals? The smallest? The largest plants of the temperate forest

make up the 3rd level are include tree’s such as maple, oak, birch, magnolia, sweet gum and beech hardwood trees. The smallest plants are the moss, ferns, and wild flowers found on the ground level. The largest animals include bears, wolves, mountain lions, coyotes, and hawks. The smaller animals, or prey are the squirrels, raccoons, opossums, porcupines and small birds such as cardinals.

Page 23: Temperate Forest

Are any of the plants or animals considered rare or endangered?

There is almost no level of rareness or endangerment. Most of the animals/plants in the temperate forest flourish. Only Giant Panda’s in the Asian temperate forest are considered endangered.
