Template for Department Profile
Name of the Department: Computer Science
1) From the Desk of Head in 200 words
Established in 1989, Department of Computer Science has a rich history of taking
lead in Research & Development in the state of art areas of Computer Science and
Technology. In view of the rapid rate of obsolescence of knowledge especially in the
domains like Computational Sciences, the department faculty strives their best in
keeping abreast with the technology. This has truly helped the department in
achieving many laurels and emerging on the national map of the country.
Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India has
recognized the department as a Centre of Excellence in Cyber security and Data
Science under the scheme Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission for
Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) with grants in aid of Rs. 7 Cr.
Our achievements so far:
• 3000+ teachers trained in Cyber Security and Data Science
• State of art laboratory in above thrust areas to ensure experiential teaching-
learning for all stakeholders
• Study material with appealing sense of readability
• Cyber Security and Data Sciences courses at all levels for all streams (arts,
science, commerce,engineering, etc.) – ready
• Training of lakhs of students in different digital security related courses in one
academic year – capability ready.
• Total number of students trained by these teachers by the next couple of years
50,000
Other achievements are:
• MoU with Google Inc in Android based development
• MoU with CDAC for R & D in big data analytics and internship of students
• MoU with Quickheal Foundation for training in computer security
All our above said achievements are leading to
• Becoming a brand – enhancing the employability of the students
• Developing into a Centre of Excellence for Cyber Security and Data Sciences
• Attracting more research students in state of art areas such as smart cities,
Machine Learning, Deep Learning, IoT, web and big data analytics.
• Becoming a hub for industry-oriented application research Opportunities exist
for students
• Cyber Experts needed globally by end 2019 – 60 lakhs
• Cyber Experts needed in India by 2025 – 10 lakhs
• Better employment opportunity for Cyber Security trained students
• Cyber smart employee – Need of the hour
For synergies in approach, seamless thought process and perceptible capability, we
are working with apex organizations like NASSCOM and CDAC. Besides the
academic and research achievements, the Department of Computer Science is proud
to be associated with MHRD, Government of India for the noble objective of Cyber
Security which has become synonymous with National Security.
Prof. (Dr.) R.K. Kamat,
Coordinator,
Department of Computer Science,
Shivaji University, Kolhapur
2) Brief History of the department along with present focus in academic & research –
150 words.
The Department of Computer Science was established in the year 1989. Academic programs
offered by the department are: MCA, MSc, DCP, M.Phil and Ph.D. The faculties have
expertise in various fields of research like machine learning, data mining, mobile computing,
soft computing, artificial neural network, Technology integration in pedagogy using LMSand
cyber security. Department has signed MoUs with Google, C-DAC, Quick Heal Foundation
and have organized various workshops for the faculties to bridge the industry-academia gap.
Currently the department is in forefront in conducting FDPs in Cyber Security and Data
Science under the ages of MHRD with grants in aid support of Rs. 7 Crore.
Department of Computer Science adopts innovative teaching-learning methods that involve
experiential learning with more focus on hands-on due to the inherent nature of the subject
itself. This is further augmented by providing industrial exposure to the students by the way
of „industry visits‟ and internship program with CDAC, Pune. Teaching-learning in the
department is synergized with adoption of ICT more specifically using MOODLE and
Google Classroom. Few courses in the department such as „web designing‟ are in great
demand by the students from other departments under Choice Based Credit System. The
faculty uses open source tools such as Kahoot and MOODLE for evaluation of the students.
The research conducted by the department faculty is applied in nature that addresses the
prevalent issues of the society. Alumni of the department are well placed in MNCs and blue
chip companies and they make it a point to give back to their alma matter by sharing their
rich expertise with students and arranging the placement camps. One of the alumnus has
contributed to start a lecture series on „Turing Awardees‟ which has become an annual affairs
strengthening the link between the present and past students of the department.
3) Vision
A globally recognized centre of excellence in all the facets of ICT in order to nurture highly
employable graduates having right skill sets towards entrepreneurship, continuous learning,
business intelligence and enriched with human values, ethics and vision for societal
upliftment.
4) Mission
