President’s Message (Pauline Mallory)

Hello Quilters! I’m back from Africa and what a wonderful time we had. Finally found a quilt shop, but alas, it was a half hour after closing time. I was able to pick up a few pieces of hand dyed batiks and a couple sweet small handmade quilts by two women from a village in Zimbabwe. So, it wasn’t all photo safaris for me. I heard the May party was wonderful and that there was a great pot luck dinner with a fun “flower pot walk.” Thank you so much to Cathy Starman and her committee for making it such a memorable time. Looking ahead to June and” What’s Your Bag?” Sounds like fun, doesn’t it? I have several bags waiting to be made – a true procrastinator! June also is time to form the nominating committee for 2017. May Program: Our May party was a huge success. Thank you to Cathy Starman and the party girls for a great spring party. The tables were so beautifully decorated with flower centerpieces and everyone took home an adorable flower pot pin cushion. And thank you to everyone who contributed to the Flower Pot Walk. The flower pots were wonderful and we earned over $500 for the guild which helps to balance our budget. Your support is appreciated so much.

June Program: What's Your Bag? What have you made to use for storing or carrying around your quilting treasures? Do you have a special overnight bag? Quilted tote? Handbag? Backpack? Sewing kit or project bag? Do you have something special for carrying your finished quilts? Bring your special bags to the June meeting and show them off. We would love to see your favorites. And please bring the pattern you used or the pattern information if possible. We will try to have a sit and sew for the bag that is voted viewers' choice. At the June meeting, I will also open up registration for the October class to be held on Saturday, October 22nd taught by Ellen Osten from Sulky. The class is Thread Sketching Free Motion Basics/Couching and Creating a Landscape.

Session One, students will learn cursive writing by machine - great for labels and signing quilts; basic free motion straight stitching techniques; free motion quilting techniques with different thread types; fill in stitching techniques and an introduction to Thread Sketched Portraits and Pen and Ink Tangles.

Session Two, students will learn basic raw edge appliqué; layer techniques; machine fed/free motion couching and more. Also, how to stitch down different yarns and/or grouped thread to create texture; take a rather plain fabric, add raw-edged piecing and then couch specialty yarns over it, creating beautifully textured fabric that can be used in endless creative projects.

The cost of the class is $50, which includes BOTH SESSIONS and a kit valued at $66.83. I need to get a headcount of people that will be attending because the kit fee must be prepaid in July. If you are not attending the June meeting but would like to attend the class, please contact me so that I can make arrangements for you. You can call me at 727-418-3180 or email me at [email protected].

President’s Message Cont’d.

I’m off to Vermont this month for our annual visit and fishing in Lake Champlain. This year I’ll be there during the Vermont Quilt Festival, so will be checking out quilts and gathering ideas for our very own quilt show. Happy Quilting!

Community Outreach (Gale Pittman)

Hello ladies! I am so impressed with the amount of quilts that have been donated over the last couple months. I made a delivery to my contact person of 4 large quilts, 12 small quilts, and 46 hearts for the months of April and May. That is extraordinary and I appreciate your efforts. They are so cute. Since this is an ongoing project and some members have asked me questions I will recap the projects. 1. We can still use a few more quilts size 46x58 to fit over the isolettes in the nursery to block out light from the room for the preemies. 2. We will continue to make the 30 inch quilts that are used for the babies for their tummy time on the floor to strengthen their muscles. 3. The heart project can be in cotton, flannel, or fleece. The hearts are for the babies who stay In the hospital but mom is discharged. Mom wears the heart next to her skin to get her scent on the heart. The hearts art put in the bassinet to help the baby bond with mom thru scent. I have the lovely Donna Tormino who is generously volunteering to help with these projects as long as I don't interfere with her vacation time! I am happy to have her help and ideas. In fact, Donna has more fabric than country quilts has in the shop and she is donating flannel for our floor quilts. We are kitting them up and will have them available for you to sew. They are very simple to make and all we need you to supply is the time and a 36 inch piece of batting. This would be a nice project to do at our August sit and sew meeting I think. We will be having you sign for each kit you take and if you can have them back in Sept I think that would be super. Another project we will do is to support the home for the veterans. Our 50/50 profits at the end of the year will be going towards the expense of getting a roof on their house. (We may be splitting this with the largo police bicycle program I'd their charity will be in need of donations). It has been suggested that we make some welcome baskets for those who may not have much and are coming to the house to live. These baskets would be in the form of laundry baskets filled with things that are needed to set up their room in the house such as detergent and cleaning supplies, personal care items, snacks, etc to help while they are getting on their feet. Our goal is to set up 10 baskets to donate. Every single item can be found at the dollar tree for $1 each. I will be sending around a list of items. If you can sign up for an item and commit to buying 10 of them we will have a project that will be appreciated. I think we can all remember how expensive it is to set up house once you move in.

SIT AND SEW – Saturday, AUGUST 20 from 9-3 at Top of the World in our regular room.

This meeting can be used to sew whatever you like. If you would like to work on a charity baby quilt kit that we have to give out then you will need to bring a 36 inch square of batting. Bring your regular sewing supplies. We will provide pressing stations. We will be collecting items for the veterans welcome baskets at the “Sit & Sew” and also thru the Sept. meeting.

As always, I am open to suggestions for these projects. You can reach me by phone or email. I do work full time and if you can help Donna and me that would be fantastic too. Gale Pittman [email protected] Home 727-546-1045 Cell 727-510-7559

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts on the campus of Florida Institute of Technology will open the new exhibitions Radical Elements and A View Within: The

Collaboration of Two Fiber Artists on Saturday, May 28.

Radical Elements is the newest fiber art show from Studio Art Quilts Associates. A signature exhibition for the international organization, it is the first show to embrace the newly expanded

definition of an art quilt. Each of the selected artists created a new work influenced by an element from the periodic table. The artists were also asked to move quilting beyond the usual

materials of fabric and thread, exploring the function and decorative properties of different surfaces and stitching materials.

“SAQA is very excited to present Radical Elements on Florida Tech’s campus,” said SAQA Executive Director Martha Sielman. “We think that the [Ruth Funk Center’s] audience, which combines an interest in science with a love of fiber art, is the perfect group to truly appreciate

this unique exhibition.”

In conjunction with Radical Elements, the Center is presenting A View Within: The Collaboration of Two Fiber Artists. Now in its sixth year, A View Within is the result of a collaborative project by contemporary artists Paula Chung and Karen Rips. The artists’

fascination with the human body, as revealed through advances in medical imagery, is the primary inspiration for this exhibition of tapestries.

Both exhibitions will be on view through Aug. 27, 2016

Carol Hemmingsen sent me the link below to share with you in the newsletter. http://www.thesplendidsampler.com/ Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson have created The Splendid Sampler.

“The Splendid Sampler is a yearlong 100 block ‘Epic Adventure’ of quilt making. We invited 84 designers we love and admire to join us. Fellow designers we admire and Industry Leaders that support us. They have designed blocks and are going to sew along with us. We then sprinkled a little magic dust on the whole Splendid thing and we are ready to go!”
