TEMPLE BETH AHM YISRAEL VOL. LX NO. 1 FALL 2019 Elul 5779— Kislev 5780
S`lihot In Preparation for 5780
Saturday, September 21 at 8:00 PM
A Joint Program with
Temple Sha`arey Shalom
and the VAAD of Rabbis
for Union County
Hosted This Year at
Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael
On September 1, we usher in the new He-brew month of Elul, which officially begins the seasonal preparation for the High Holy Days that will begin one month later. To assist us in our preparation and process of introspection and review of the past year, the Shofar is sounded daily (except on Shabbat) after the morning minyan, it is traditional to visit the graves of loved ones and teachers, and recite the S`lihot prayers at the daily morning minyan service. In the Conservative movement we traditionally do an evening service the Saturday night the week before Rosh Hashanah. During this service the mood is set with the use of the melodies for the upcoming High Holy Days. It is also a tradition to a have a S`lihot pro-
gram that provokes our thoughts on the themes for this time of the year. Refresh-ments will be served.
This year we have added a new component to the event. It will not just be our congrega-tion and Sha`arey Shalom; it will include the member congregations of the VAAD (committee) of Rabbis of Union County. These congregations run the gamut from Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist and Orthodox. It will include a choir com-prised from the VAAD’s congregations.
Our program, “Choosing Your Own Jewish Adventure,” will be an interactive and fast-paced conversation about some of the most fascinating texts that teach us how we make choices.
We will then conclude with a massive sho-far blast – please bring a shofar if you wish join in.
Rabbi Mark Mallach

From Our Co-Presidents
Exciting Things Happening This Fall
We hope everyone has had a great sum-
mer and is excited to kick off the new
school year and Temple year. As Presi-
dents, it makes us so happy to share with
you the exciting things happening in our
community. We’d like to share a few spe-
cial things happening this fall.
As we wrote about in the last Bulletin, our
strategic planning process wrapped up in
June. We received extremely valuable di-
rection from our committee in the areas of
engagement, leadership and programming.
The most immediate plan relates to our
clergy. The committee has recommended
that we move into a search process for a
Conservative Rabbi who fulfills the fol-
lowing criteria:
• Inspirational across all demographics
of our membership
• A teacher more than a scholar
• Involved in Programming
• A community builder
• Able to lead regular shabbat services,
read Torah and Haftarah
• Execute pastoral duties
To lead this charge, we have appointed a
search committee whose members are
David Brooks, Chair, Aaron Adler, Rachel
Fishman, Brian Greenwald, Darren Korn-
span, Debbie Neher, Norton Scherzer and
Daniella Weinberg.
The Strategic Planning Committee also
recommended that we engage a Religious
School Director. We are thrilled to share
that we have Co-Directors for our Religious
School, Elissa Gorkowitz (our interim direc-
tor last year) and Michele Praport. Elissa
and Michele have been working together in
our Shorashim program for many years
and have great ideas planned for this com-
ing year. Elissa will be overseeing grades
K-3 and Michelle will be overseeing grades
4-7 as well as our Madrichim program and
Teen Institute.
Along the lines of our education program,
another change this fall is our revamped
Teen Institute. We now have students at-
tending every other Sunday from 11-12,
coordinating with their madrich duties. We
have different topics and teachers for each
pair of sessions.
Moving onto our lay leadership, we have
an updated slate of VPs. A couple of our
veteran VPs have taken on new portfolios
and our two new VPs are coming in with
fresh ideas.
Brian Margulies – Building and Grounds
Glenn Wohl – Membership
Lois Kaish – Fundraising
Faith Racusin – Education
Sharon Kornspan – Religious Affairs
And last, but definitely not least, as we are
writing this article, we anticipate that the
last phase of capital improvements, repav-
ing of the parking lot, will be completed by
early September.
As always, if there are any ideas you would
like to share, committees you’d like to be a
part of or any programs you would like to
launch, please contact either one of us.
B’shalom,

HEALING AND THANKFULNESS FOR HEALING SERVICE
Friday, September 27, 2019 at 8 PM
Our annual Healing & Thankfulness for Healing
Service is on Friday, September 27, 2019 at 8 PM.
If you are looking for a Judaism in which your per-
sonal spiritual connection leads to a life filled with
more joy and compassion, or if you are in need of,
or thankful for healing in either the physical or spir-
itual realms, then you are cordially invited to this
service during which we will seek out God togeth-
er, review our lives, consider possibilities of
change, and seek blessings for health and healing.
The service will include special musical vocal
presentations with accompaniment. As always,
each participant will have an opportunity to share a
direct blessing of healing with Rabbi Mark Mallach
beneath the Chupah Refuah – Canopy of Healing.
Please join us for a most memorable evening en-
hanced by beautiful songs and melodies of healing
and Shabbat. An Oneg Shabbat – Shabbat Re-
past of Joy, will follow.

• NEILAH TOP 10 LIST
• MAKE A LULAV SHAKE

What do the items listed above have in common? Almost all (except for the YOM KIPPUR MINHA & COMMUNITY YIZKOR) are catchy titles of programs designed to en-courage congregants to increase their level of ritual partic-ipation in synagogue life over the High Holy Days. The holidays targeted by these titles are Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simhat Torah, respectively. We offer them to you for your spiritual pleasure.
Sneak Into Shul: On Yom Kippur the Torah teaches that we are to “afflict our souls.” That is why we have pro-hibitions against eating and drinking, bathing beyond basic hygiene, and conjugal relations. In addition, we are not to wear leather-soled shoes. Leather shoes, once only custom made, were considered a sign of luxury. There-fore, in order to humble ourselves before God, to afflict our mortal souls, we don’t wear leather shoes. Originally, the intent was to come to services on Yom Kippur in one’s stocking feet. For many reasons, this is not practical or safe. The modern alternative has become to wear on Yom Kippur canvas athletic footwear, i.e. sneakers, hence, Sneak Into Shul.
Yom Kippur Minha & Community Yizkor We offer a Community Yizkor service as part of Yom Kip-pur as a service to our community. It is during the Minha (afternoon) service of Yom Kippur, Wednesday, October 9
at 4:45 PM. Please note the following about this service:
It is NOT the same Yizkor service recited earlier in the day for our Temple membership.
A special Community Yizkor Service ticket is required by non-members to attend this service. Members contin-ue to use their member tickets for Minha. The Com-munity Yizkor tickets must be obtained from the Tem-ple office in advance.
Make A Lulav Shake: Purchase and bring your Lulav & Etrogim to Sukkot Ser-
vices on Monday, October 14 at 9:30 AM, Tuesday, October 15 through Friday, October 18 at 6:45 AM, and Sunday, October 20 at 9 AM.
PLEASE NOTE: Erev Shemini Atzeret v`Simhat Torah: As a congregation in solidarity with Israel, we FOL-LOW THE ISRAELI LITURGICAL CALENDAR, hence, as observed in Israel, SHEMINI ATZERET & SIMHAT TORAH ARE COMBINED AS ONE DAY
Sunday night, October 20 at 6:30 PM – Erev Shemini Atzeret & Simhat Torah: Help us kick it up lots of notches for Erev Simhat Torah. Come dance with the Torah for Simhat Torah with our rabbi, hear Rabbi Mark Mallach read an entire Torah scroll in 18 minutes or less, and en-joy a candy apple. THIS IS NOT JUST FOR KIDS – ALL AGES SHOULD COME TOGETHER IN CELEBRATION OF OUR TORAH.

Welcome to another fun-filled year at the Early Childhood Program. I would like to welcome everyone back to another wonderful year at the Early Childhood Program. As we prepare for the new school year, the teachers have been busy clean-ing their classrooms, decorating the
bulletin boards and planning for the children to return. We cannot wait to welcome the children back and to say hello to our new friends and families. Together we will provide a positive and nurturing environment where the children can learn and grow as they explore and discover the world around them. Together we are partners in creating a stimu-lating curriculum that encourages the children to learn and develop at their own pace. I know we will provide the best learning experience possible for all our children.
We are excited about our new lunch program. Jerusalem Pizza in Elizabeth, will provide lunches for ECP. We have some fantastic options and cannot wait to see what the kids think.
September and October are very busy months. We will ex-plore the new classroom, new friends, new routines and new teachers. The children will learn about Rosh Hasha-nah, apples, Sukkot, fall, All About Me and so much more. I
am sure everyone will have so much fun exploring.
If your child is coming to Preschool for the very first time, it is always good to prepare your child for what to expect at school. Here are some helpful hints to get your child ready for the first day of school.
• Give your child a sense of what to expect. Visit the class-room to meet the teacher. Read some stories about the first day of school. • Come up with a good-bye ritual. Let your child know that you will be back to get him/her very soon. • Practice listening skills. Start asking your child to do a series of things, such as take his/her shoes to his room and put them in the closet, or to go to the bathroom and wash his/her hands, then come, and help you set the dinner ta-ble. • Read to your child every day. Read about coming to pre-school. • Use pretend play to explore the idea of preschool.
On behalf of the staff at the ECP, I wish you a happy and healthy new year.

⇒ If you would like to receive an aliyah on that day, please let us know.

What’s new at Shorashim: The Religious School at Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael? To begin, we are both so excited to be co-directing the Shorashim Program.
Morah Elissa Gorkowitz is coordinating the Lower School Program (K-3) and Morah Michele Praport is coordinating the Upper School Program (4-7), Madrichim and Teen In-stitute. We look forward to working along with our wonder-ful teaching and administrative staff to ensure a year of meaningful Jewish learning.
Our NEW Madrichim program (Grades 8-12) utilizes our teens' skills in a collaborative way to complement our Shor-ashim classrooms. In our new program, teens are men-tored by experienced teachers, and are able to share their talents, gain leadership skills, and be role models for our younger students.
Our Tichon-Teen Institute Program has been revamped. Our teen programming now takes place on Sunday morn-ings from 11:00-12:00. Our Tichon group of 8th and 9th graders and our Tichon group of 10th, 11th and 12th grad-ers meet on alternating Sundays. Our teens share their time on Sundays interacting with special speakers and par-ticipating in creative events where they explore their Jewish identities through topics such as Rock and Roll, Food Fun, Harry Potter, Current Events, and much more.
We look forward to beginning our Shorashim Religious School Year at our “Shorashim Meet and Greet Breakfast”. This will be a great time for students to reconnect with their religious school friends and welcome new friends to our Shorashim family. While the students enjoy their breakfast, parents are invited to our classrooms to meet with our fac-ulty. The teachers will share and explain the curriculum and goals for the coming religious school year. It is wonderful to have students, teachers and parents working together to make the most of our Shorashim Religious School experi-ence.
At Shorashim we are not only sharing the beginning of a new religious school year, we are also sharing the excite-ment for the new Jewish Year 5780. With Rosh Hashanah approaching, all our classes will be busy learning and ex-ploring the customs, traditions, laws, and rituals of these High Holy Days. Listening to the shofar, eating from a round challah, tasting apples and honey, and wishing each other a “Shanah Tovah U Metukah” will all be reminders of the new year to come.
From Rosh Hashanah through Shavuot we look forward to sharing an amazing religious school experience with our students and their families. We wish you all a “Shanah To-vah U Metukah-- A Good Sweet Year Filled With Health, Happiness and Love!”

The Congregational Nursing Project
Integral to the practice of Judaism is the mandate to pre-serve life and to care for one’s self. These values have profound implications for Jewish perspectives on issues of health and healing. To this we add the goal “the best possible quality of life as chosen by the patient.” This project, established twenty years ago, a model in the nation, is still working. Our nurses respond to the unique needs and priorities of all ages. There is no fee for ser-vice.
Your program director’s spiritual training was from the URJ. Interdenominational training was from Conserva-tive, Reconstructionist and Orthodox rabbis and the Health Ministry Association – a National group of De-nominations that partner with the American Nursing As-sociation. The professional association is FAITH COM-MUNITY NURSING; it used to be known as Parish Nurs-ing. The original funding for our group was from the Healthcare Foundation of NJ and the Wallerstein Foun-dation. Synagogues provide financial support as origi-nally agreed upon. We are still strongly connected to MetroWest. Our program includes the Orthodox, Con-servative and Reform Springfield congregations; they all signed the original contract.
A FAITH COMMUITY NURSE functions as an educator, a counselor, a referral agent and as an advocate. Strong clergy support is essential; strong rabbinic support is present. In complicated situations in this program, with patient permission, each case has a team consisting of at least the rabbi, nurse, the patient’s own physician and a counselor or social worker as needed. We spend a lot of time on the telephone. Telehealth has become im-portant in our way of work. Just taking blood pressures is not enough. People need to be listened to when it comes to matters of their health and the health of loved ones. If there is or could be a need for rapid response, we call 911.
Weekends are important; typically hospitals now dis-charge as many patients as possible before the week-end. Congregants call Saturdays and Sundays. They need to know what “is wrong” with their family member,
if it is normal, and if the patient needs to be brought back to the hospital. Sometimes a simple suggestion and a call back in an hour is all that is needed. Some-times an explanation of test results is needed. Often new medications have unexpected side effects or are taken at the wrong times. Sometimes family and friends are alarming. Often nurses can get immediate medical guidance. Sometimes nurses visit. Often families need help in formulating questions so as to receive useful an-swers. Most often families just need reassurance that they are doing the right things. “A visiting nurse will come next week” is not comforting at the time.
A few stories: A nurse once answered a rabbi call at a home at 10 pm. She sent the sick caretaker off in an ambulance, and at the caregiver’s request, hired a live-in for the patient be-ginning that night. It took all night for other family mem-bers to get to the home. Other times we visited at 7 am for a day or a week and stood by while a frightened mom became confident enough to comfortably give her child insulin by injection. Several times we have re-ceived calls from a distance. Someone is sure some-thing is wrong. We call and go to the home. As above, sometimes it is the caretaker who has a problem. We report to family members, make arrangements as re-quested, wait for family or the arrival of a new caretaker, lock the house and leave.
Every time we are with congregants, we get questions. Often we observe clinical things and because of our unique practice, we can approach the topic and register concern. We provide professional support and encour-agement.
Be thankful for this service and use us.
Have training and want to help? Call. No training and want to help? Call. Need help or have ideas? Call.

Women’s League of TBAY is gearing up for another fun, active and productive year. Our “Opening Event” of the new year is a compli-mentary brunch on Sunday, September 15. Then we will hold our Annual Paid Up Mem-bership Event on Wednesday, October 16,
which will include wine and hors d’oeuvres in TBAY’s beau-tiful Sukkah, and the dinner in the Ballroom. And on Thurs-day, November 21, WL is having a cooking demonstration to help our members prepare for Thanksgiving!
For more information about our programs or fundraising efforts that enhance and support our TBAY community, contact Jane Lakritz at 201-826-8930 or Susan Teller at 908-233-0092.
Please participate in our Gift Card Program, which is a great way to raise money for the Temple, and an easy way to earn Donor Credit. Gift cards for supermarkets and many
other retail stores (including Costco) can be purchased through the Temple office, or by contacting Lynn Haliczer at 973-943-7611 or Irene Goldie-Petras at 908-964-0998.
We are also selling Forever Stamps at a discounted price. Save now, and support Women’s League in this TBAY fundraiser. Stamps are available in the Temple office during regular Temple hours or on Sunday mornings.
Also, please visit the Women’s League Gift Shop, off the Temple main lobby. The gift shop has much beautiful Juda-ica, as well as jewelry and other items. The Temple office staff can help you with any purchase.
Thank you for your interest in Women’s League!
