ISRAEL AND THE WESTERN WALL

In all the years I have been involved with AIPAC I don’t remember an incident when the heads of AIPAC made an emergency trip to Israel to see the Prime Minister not to show their support but to express their concern about the direction that he and his government are taking. At the same time, The Jewish Agency’s Board cancelled a dinner with him, and a Miami Jew asked for a million dollar refund on a recent Israel Bonds purchase.

50 years ago, in June of 1967, the Israeli army, in one of the bloodiest battles in the history of our homeland, took back the Old City of Jerusalem from the Jordanians. The highlight of this victory was reclaiming The Western Wall, a remnant of the Second Temple that was destroyed almost 2,000 years ago, and has become the holiest place for Jews all over the world.

However, it seems like the Western Wall has been taken away from the majority of the Jewish people. Not by the Romans, the Crusaders or the Arabs but by a minority of Ultra-Orthodox Jews. They did not do it by military force (remember, they don’t serve in the army), but by manipulating the fragile Israeli political system to fit their contempt and exclusion of the Jews who don’t practice the way they do. The painful irony is that the Jews who have been struggling with the Ottomans, the British and the Arabs in the past centuries against their own exclusion

by Rabbi Alon Levkovitz

from the Western Wall are now, when in control of it, using their power to exclude women and Liberal Jews. No one challenges the gender segregation at the Wall, but even in the tiny section that was allocated to women, they are not allowed to wear a Tallit, to sing out loud or to read from the Torah. After successful appeals to the Israeli High Court of Justice, the government decided to designate a new section of the Western Wall in which people will be allowed to worship in the way that suits their tradition. Unfortunately, last month, the Israeli government voted to suspend the expansion of a non-Orthodox prayer area at the Western Wall, and if that was not enough, they also gave Israel’s Chief Rabbinate sole authority over official Jewish conversions performed in the country.

The cabinet decision to repeal the resolution creating a state-recognized egalitarian prayer section at the southern end of the Western Wall put an end to dreams of the Reform and Conservative movements for a site for their worshipers at the heart of the Jewish people. The conversion law will now continue on to the Knesset and, if enacted, will revoke all state recognition of Reform and Conservative conversions for the purpose of registration with the Interior Ministry.

This decision means that the State of Israel does not recognize Liberal Jews as equal and denies access to our ways of worshiping at the holiest place for the Jews. It is not simply an internal Israeli issue, it affects the vast majority of American Jewry who identify themselves with the Liberal movements. This means the State of Israel recognizes and supports only the Orthodox way of Jewish life.

The major American Jewish organizations have been putting out statements that denounce the Israeli government for destroying the fundamental principle that Israel, our Jewish homeland, is a place where all Jews can and must feel at home.

After 2,000 years, we finally got back our Jewish State. It became evident from the very first day of Israel’s establishment that her neighbors will do all they can to destroy her, but they failed. Israel’s survival is a result not only of the Israeli Defense Force’s strength, but because Jews all over the world were united in supporting what they perceived as the national home of the entire Jewish people. The Government of Israel's decisions has a real potential to divide the Jewish people, and as our history taught us—when we are divided, we lose.

As a Reform Rabbi, I am worried that Israel does not respect the version of Judaism that I love and respect, and is allowing hate and unacceptance to overpower the love that Judaism is all about. As an American Jew, I am dreading the rift that such moves will bring about between the Jews of Israel and the Jews of the Diaspora. As an Israeli, I cry for my homeland, that sacrifices its Democratic-Jewish nature for short-term political gain. Rabbi Alon Levkovitz

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

As we start our new fiscal year at Temple Beth Am I would like to welcome our new Directors, Marjorie Nagrotsky, Kerrie Rhodes, Jason Rogers and Orin Shakerdge who have joined the board, as well as welcoming the rest of the Directors back. I would like to thank everyone who volunteers, but especially these members who give of their time on the board to help guide the Temple as we continue along our path. Last year at this time the Synagogue was going through its rebirth with construction going on throughout the building. Though we had our hiccups, today construction is complete and we have an amazing facility for our expanding Jewish Community to pray, learn, celebrate, practice our traditions and help repair the world. These are all things that are important to me and my family, and I’m sure to most of you reading this article. With that said, we’d like to ask you to get more involved with some of the programs we have at TBA, and join in volunteering. We have many committees that could use your help. Each of you have expertise that could be shared

to make us even more successful. Membership, Social Action and Caring Community are just some of the committees that we need help with right now, and I would appreciate you contacting me to let me know which one(s) you would like to get involved with. The list of committees we have at the Temple are listed on our website, www. templebetham.com/about/committees.

I would like to mention and thank Rabbi Alon, Cantor Jessica and Rabbinic Intern Brett who have already been working tirelessly on the High Holy Days Services over the summer (member’s tickets will be mailed to you prior to the beginning of the High Holy Days season). In addition, Paula Deakter, Alissa Frankel, Danna Cohen, and Amanda Feld, directors of our education departments and their staffs have been working diligently to be ready for the beginning of the school year to provide the best educational programs possible.

I would like to invite you to our OPEN HOUSE, Sunday August

by Bruce Cohen

13th from 11am to 1:00pm. Please feel free to bring your friends to see and hear about all the programs going on at TBA. Tours of our schools will be given, and auxiliary clubs and committees will all be there to let you know more about what they do and how you can get involved. And yes, there will be food and fun things for our children to do while we meet new and old friends. The Board of Directors and I can’t wait to welcome you back and if this is your first time visiting the Temple, please make sure we meet.

Thank you,Bruce [email protected]

SISTERHOOD SCOOPby Lois RemickSisterhood members, put on your party sandals and join us for lunch on Tuesday, August 15, at Waterway Cafe, PGA Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens.

This monthly lunch will start at noon and we will celebrate Sisterhood members whose birthdays occur this month. There is one requirement however, you must RSVP to Carole Levine at least one day prior to the lunch as we must tell the restaurant the number of people attending. Carole's number is 561.339.3909 and her email is [email protected].

Those celebrating a birthday during the month of our luncheon will be Sisterhood's guest for lunch. All others will be responsible for what they order and will receive a separate check. Whoever said that there was "No Free Lunch," obviously was never a member of our Sisterhood celebrating her birthday.

Please note that there will be no Sisterhood Board Meeting in July, but there will be a meeting on Tuesday, August 1 at 1:00pm at TBA. We invite all members to attend the Board meetings. Going forward this fiscal year, open Board meetings will be the first Tuesday of the month, and monthly get together luncheons will be the third Tuesday of the month.

We thank the following members who helped get the Sisterhood Membership mailing out in June: Toby Dubrow, Gayle Laurene, Dotty Wisch, Barbara Seltzer, Shelly Kissil, Debbie Schmidt, Linda Wolfe, Janie Meyers, Marsha Levinson, Rena Mittenberg, Barbara and Jerry Rosman, Robbin Etchells, and CK Tenenbaum.

If you have not received your membership mailing, please contact Maril Levy (561.249.6046) or [email protected].

Members Barbara Rosman, Robin Etchells, Robin's guest, Joy, and Lois Remick enjoyed a happy hour painting party at Uptown Gallery Art on June 21. While munching treats and enjoying their favorite BYOB, the ladies painted a picture of their choice and were given some ideas on how to get the best results. To say it was a wonderful new experience is a vast understatement and if members are interested in a repeat of this event, please email Lois Remick at [email protected].

Come to Sisterhood's annual Lunch & a Movie at TBA on Sunday, July 30 at noon. The film, Every Time We Say Goodbye, stars a young Tom Hanks, and takes place in Jerusalem in the early 1940s. He plays an American pilot, flying for the RAF, the son of a Methodist minister. He meets and falls in love with a Sephardic Jewish woman whose family has lived in Jerusalem for more than 400 years. Of course, their relationship is forbidden....

We'll be serving an Israeli-themed lunch, and movie snacks too. This event is open to all TBA adults. Cost is $10 for Sisterhood members and $15 for guests. Please use the form on the opposite page to RSVP with your check (payable to Sisterhood of TBA), or, you may phone Deb Schmidt (561.789.0044) or Sharon Rosen (561.371.3321) to make your reservation and pay by credit card.

Like the Army, We are looking for a Few Good Women! The Board of Directors is seeking 3 women

who would like to serve on the Sisterhood Board. The requirements are that You are Able to Leap tall buildings with a Single bound, Fight truth and justice the American Way....Oops, I got momentarily confused with What the Men's Club requires. Joining the Board only requires your willingness to promote Sisterhood by attending monthly Board Meetings and helping to plan, organize, and celebrate Sisterhood. All members who are interested in Board positions are asked to contact Maril Levy at [email protected]. .Last on my list is the need for Sisterhood volunteers for the TBA Open House on August 13 from 11:00am to 1:00pm where we will welcome perspective new members to our Temple. A Sisterhood table will be set up with information about our activities and we hope you are able to sign up for a shift in either the morning or afternoon. Please contact Maril [email protected], to sign up for either 10:00am to 12:00pm, or 12:00pm to 1:00pm.

See you at either the August Board Meeting on August 1 or the August get together lunch on August 15 at the Waterway Cafe.

B'shalom,Lois Remick

Since the last edition of your Temple Beth Am Scribe many projects have been completed and the “club” is well on the way towards another successful year beginning July 1. A new slate of Directors and Officers was elected/appointed for the TBA fiscal year beginning July 1, 2017. The seven-person board also appointed Officers for the coming year as follows: Harvey Silverman, Director and President; David Elias, Director and Vice-President; Robert “Bob” Hochman, Director and Treasurer; Melvin “Mel” Wolfe, Director and Secretary/Scribe Contributor; Jack Tenenbaum, Director; Bruce Cohen, Director; and Joseph “Joe” Meshil, Director.

June also was the start of the Men’s Club’s Summer Dining Out Program. The summer dinners were “kicked off ” by our very own Biker-Man David Elias. As always, a large group of members, their meaningful others and friends enjoyed the fresh and wonderfully presented sea food delights at Schooner's Restaurant. Thank you David! Jack Tenenbaum was the coordinator for our second Dining Out and did a wonderful job picking Portobello Cucina Italiana Restaurant and thirty-five attendees enjoyed an excellent dinner at a reasonable cost with delicious wine. Kudos to Jack who also greeted us at the door (truly a mench!). The July dinner was held at the Juno Beach Fish House. Edward Hochman was the coordinator. He arranged a wonderful early (aka low cost) menu for the attendees to enjoy delicious sea food entrees at reasonable prices in our own reserved area of this fine establishment. As Ed had a previously scheduled vacation to enjoy, Mel Wolfe assisted with collecting the RSVPs.

MEN'S CLUB HAPPENINGSby Harvey Silverman & Mel Wolfe

Harvey is hinting at a re-visit to our exciting 50/50 raffle program as a highlight to occur between our main course and desert time. Bob Hochman, with the assistance of Nanci (she has the connections) will again host our members, their guests and families at Brio Tuscan Grill on Saturday, October 21 at 6:00pm, located at the Gardens Mall (also in a private section of the restaurant) and maybe a re-do of the 50/50 raffle. This will be an evening not to be missed.

Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017 will bring a Business Networking Event for all TBA Congregants. AUGUST MEETING: Monday, August 7th at 10:30am at Temple Beth Am BOOK SELECTION: TO THE END OF THE LAND LUNCH: To Be Announced

David Grossman - In this stunning, bestselling novel—and an NBCC Award finalist—David Grossman tells the powerful story of a mother’s love for her son. Just before his release from service in the Israeli army, Ora’s son Ofer is sent back to the front for a major offensive. In a fit of preemptive grief and magical thinking, so that no bad news can reach her, Ora sets out on an epic hike in the Galilee. She is joined by an unlikely companion—Avram, a former friend and lover with a troubled past—and as they sleep out in the hills, Ora begins to conjure her son. Ofer’s story, as told by Ora, becomes a surprising balm both for her and for Avram—and a

mother’s haunting meditation on war and family.

SEPTEMBER MEETING: Monday, September 11th at 10:30am at Temple Beth Am BOOK SELECTION: MAKING TOAST LUNCH: To Be Announced

Roger Rosenblatt - When his daughter, Amy—a gifted doctor, mother, and wife—collapses and dies from an asymptomatic heart condition, Roger Rosenblatt and his wife, Ginny, leave their home on the South Shore of Long Island to move in with their son-in-law, Harris, and their three young grandchildren: six-year-old Jessica, four-year-old Sammy, and one-year-old James, known as Bubbies. Long past the years of diapers, homework, and recitals, Roger and Ginny—Boppo and Mimi to the kids—quickly reaccustom themselves to the world of small children: bedtime stories, talking toys, play dates, nonstop questions, and consequential thought. Though reeling from Amy's death they carry on, reconstructing a family, sustaining one another, and guiding three lively, alert, and tender-hearted children through the pains and confusions of grief. As he marvels at the strength of his son-in-law, a surgeon, and the tenacity and skill of his wife, a former kindergarten teacher, Roger attends each day to "the one household duty I have mastered"—preparing the morning toast perfectly to each child's liking. With the wit, heart, precision, and depth of understanding that has characterized his work, Roger Rosenblatt peels back the layers on this most personal of losses to create both a tribute to his late daughter and a testament to familial love. The day Amy died, Harris told Ginny and Roger, "It's impossible." Roger's story tells how a family makes the possible of the impossible.

Our next Soup Kitchen will be Monday, August 21st. We need your help.

If you can spare some time, kindly contact us to add your name to our volunteer list. Many of our regular Temple Volunteers are away for the summer months, so your help is greatly appreciated and needed.

Dear Friends,

We are re-introducing Lotsa Helping Hands to Temple Beth Am’s community. Lotsa Helping Hands is a web-based volunteer organization platform that we use to alert our core of volunteers when the need arises. At this time, we are using it to offer support to families who are going through a rough patch, like health crisis (but not only!), by providing dinners for a limited amount of time.

If you wish to participate, and help out by making and delivering a meal, you can sign up for Temple Beth Am’s Lotsa Helping Hands community. Please send me an email at [email protected] so I can send you an email invitation with easy to follow directions.

If you cannot reach me, please contact Carol Sleeper at [email protected].

Thanks for lending a hand,

Gali [email protected] P.S. If you feel that your family could benefit from this communal service or you know of someone in our Temple Beth Am community including The One School, please also email either Carol or me. We all go through rough times. We don’t have to do it alone!

Honor the Memory of Your Loved Ones

Yizkor Book Deadline: August 31, 2017 FIRM

During the High Holy Days, and especially at the Yizkor Service on Yom Kippur, we remember family and friends who have passed away.

It is customary to make a contribution to tzedakah in honor of those for whom we say Yizkor. One opportunity for honoring the memory of loved ones is to include their names in our annual Yizkor Book, which also includes prayers, poems and readings.

We must receive your Yizkor form by August 31 to include your listing. This is a FIRM deadline. The Yizkor Book is sent out for printing the next day. The Yizkor Book form is on page 21.

Grab your blanket and picnic dinner and join us for our annual Rosh Hashanah tradition, as we let go!Free yourself of the wrongs you don’t want to carry into the new year, by taking part in the Jewish custom of casting them into the sea.

Come together with the Temple Beth Am community for this informal ritual at Ocean Cay Park (Marcinski Road and A1A). We’ll have a short meaningful Service and bid farewell to the year with moments of personal reflection, as we toss bread into the water and watch the waves carry it away. Following, we’ll hang out on the beach with new and old friends! Children are invited to join Youth Director, Amanda Feld, for sandcastle building and beach games.

Beach attire recommended.

BAT MITZVAHOF SHIRI BEN ISRAEL

With great love, pride, and joy, we announce the Bat Mitzvah of our daughter, Shiri Hanna Ben-Israel on August 5, 2017 at Temple Beth Am.

Shiri is entering the 8th grade at Independence Middle School, where she is enrolled in the Sci Quest Academy. In addition, she has been inducted into the National Junior Honors Society.

Her special interests include playing the flute in the honors band class. She worked very hard to earn first chair, which means she’s the leader of her flute section. Shiri also practices Tae Kwon Do and has earned her red belt this past year. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her friends.

Shiri’s love of music inspired her to volunteer for the Grace Notes Foundation with her friend, Josephine. This organization, in memory of Makayla Joy Sitton, provides music scholarships for underprivileged children. Shiri and Josephine participated as musicians and helpers at various fundraising events. They also raised money for the foundation by having a yard sale and collecting aluminum cans. Shiri plans to continue participating in future fundraising events.

Shiri is looking forward to sharing her special day with friends and family. We would like to extend our gratitude to the Temple Beth Am community. Special thanks to Rabbi Alon Levkovitz, Rabbinic Intern Brett Tancer, Cantor Jessica Turnoff Ferrari, and all the Hebrew school staff (especially Terri Berryman) for teaching and inspiring Shiri since her days as a preschooler at Temple Beth Am.

BAR MITZVAHOF BEN SHAINMAN

It is with great pride and joy we announce that our son, Benjamin Lee Shainman, will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Temple Beth Am.

Temple Beth Am has been a second home for Ben since preschool. We still have the rocking chair made by his class from when he was a Turtle. This fall, Ben will be an 8th grader at Bak Middle School of the Arts continuing in the Communications program.

Ben loves using his feet in more ways than one. After playing recreation soccer for many years, he just joined the Jupiter United travel soccer team. He was motivated to tap dance on his own and has been taking tap lessons for three years at Jupiter Dance Academy. In those rare moments when he slows down, you can find Ben in front of his computer watching soccer highlights or playing Minecraft.

Ben's Bar Mitzvah project grew out of his love of soccer. On July 9, he hosted his own soccer tournament to benefit Charity Ball, an organization that provides soccer balls to children in impoverished countries around the globe.

Ben is excited to share this special day with his sister Brooke, his family and friends. Heartfelt thanks to Rabbinic Intern Brett Tancer, Rabbi Alon Levkovitz, Cantor Jessica Turnoff Ferrari, and Sherrie Kesselman for all their support and guidance.

BAR MITZVAH OF HAYDEN DEITCH

It is with great love, pride and happiness we announce that our son Hayden will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at

Temple Beth Am.

Hayden has the biggest heart of gold you could ever imagine. He is bright, friendly and always available for a hug.

He has studied at Meyer Academy since 2013 and will be beginning 7th grade this year at Jupiter Middle School.

In his free time, Hayden enjoys sports, spending time with his friends and, of course, anything to do with the Internet.

We are very much looking forward to his simcha and couldn't be more proud of his achievement.

We would like to thank Rabbi Alon Levkovitz, Cantor Jessica Turnoff Ferrari, Rabbinic Intern Brett Tancer and all of Hayden's teachers for all of their support

Stephani and Andrew Deitch

MAZEL TOV!BAR MITZVAH OF HUNTER KRIEGER

With love and happiness, we are proud to announce the Bar Mitzvah of our son, Hunter Lucas on August 26, 2017 at Temple Beth Am.

Hunter is a seventh grade honor student at The Benjamin School. Hunter enjoys playing football, basketball, soccer or any other sport that comes his way. As an avid athlete, Hunter is always willing to take on any new sports challenge but football and basketball are his true passions, both on school teams or in pick-up games. Hunter watches, plays and breathes sports. Hanging out with his friends, going to North Carolina for camp, and attending all the Canes football games as a season ticket holder are all activities that Hunter enjoys outside of his school day.

As his mitzvah project, Hunter has chosen to collect school supplies for the children of JAFCO. JAFCO is an organization within the Jewish community that cares for abused and neglected children and those with developmental disabilities. We are truly pleased with Hunter’s choice.

Many thanks to Rabbi Alon Levkovitz, Cantor Jessica Turnoff Ferrari and Rabbinic Intern Brett Tancer for their time, encouragement and dedication in helping Hunter prepare for this special time in his life. Hunter’s sisters, Madison and Bryce, along with Hunter, can’t wait to celebrate this occasion with family and friends.

Social-Emotional Skills

Seeds for children’s future are planted very early. Research has shown that preschoolers’ social-emotional skills are more predictive than literacy skills for elementary school success. Kindergarteners who are not socially and behaviorally ready for school are more likely to be retained and suspended by the time they reach fourth grade. Social-emotional readiness in five year-olds also predicts long-term outcomes. Socially-emotionally competent five year-olds achieve more college degrees, have higher level employment, less criminal behavior, substance use and mental health problems, and safer sexual behavior. Social-emotional skills include:• Recognizing and managing emotions and behavior• Focusing attention and listening• Being assertive• Demonstrating caring and concern for others• Establishing positive relationships• Handling interpersonal conflicts

Beginning this September, The One School is excited to introduce a curriculum teaching social-emotional skills to our Shining Stars classes. The program is called The Second Step Early Learning Program. It was developed by the award winning Committee for Children in Seattle and is endorsed by the world’s leading organization, The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). In early September, The One School’s VPK teachers will be trained to teach this 28 week program by Dr. Myles Cooley, a Palm Beach Gardens psychologist.

Health Forms:Please be sure that your child’s current immunization and medical evaluation

records have been submitted to the school office as soon as possible. The Health Department mandates that every child MUST have these up-to-date forms on

file as a part of their school file in order to be in attendance. Any child for whom we do not have State of Florida health forms on file by the first day of school, MAY NOT ATTEND SCHOOL UNTIL THEY ARE SUBMITTED. We appreciate

your cooperation with this matter.

The Garden Awaits:Planting season is almost here, so if would like to help us get the garden cleaned up and ready for the new school year, please let us know. The garden clean-up

date will be announced as soon as it is confirmed.

Children will be taught a different skill each day in a 5-7 minute “lesson.” Lessons will correspond to one of five themes: Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotional Management, Friendship Skills & Problem Solving, and Transition to Kindergarten. The daily lessons involve stories and discussions, practice exercises/role-plays, puppet scripts and songs. Take home activities will allow parents to see and reinforce what the children are learning each day. You can view the entire curriculum, weekly themes and activities for the program at: http://www.cfchildren.org/second-step/early-learningWe anticipate beginning the program in mid-late September. I welcome your feedback as the program unfolds.Written by Myles Cooley

A Summer Like No Other:This summer, our One School campers were on the go, learning something new and making friends every day. Together, we celebrated Shabbat each week and the 4th of July, had a visit from our friends at Busch Wildlife Sanctuary and the Palm Beach County firefighters, visited the bounce house, rode the ponies, ate

snow cones, danced with Ms. Yael, practiced our yoga and gymnastic moves, had fun at water play and that is not all! We’re sorry to see the summer end, but we

have so many wonderful memories of fun days at summer camp!
