WHEN COMEDY STOPS BEING FUNNY

Larry David’s segment on Saturday Night Live reignited the debate over whether there are topics that are inappropriate for comedy. Humor has been essential to the survival of the Jewish people, and we are rarely shy about pushing the envelope. However, this time it hit too close to home, when David joked about concentration camps. I cringed when I watched and found it unfunny, hardly able to see the segment to the end. At the same time, I must admit my personal biases and sensitivities when it comes to the Holocaust.

Gallows humor is essential in some situations. It treats serious, frightening, or painful subjects in a light or satirical way. Anyone who served in the military is very familiar with the concept, as are medical professionals and others

by Rabbi Alon Levkovitzwho frequently brush with death, chronic illnesses, and other life-threatening situations. Joking under these conditions is not a sign of lack of caring or disrespect. It serves the psychological need to reduce pressure, to establish intimacy among those who are involved, and enables the professionals to keep going under the toughest situations.

As a rabbi, I witness gallows humor quite often. When family members and close friends gather around their loved one reaching the end of her or his life, or after their death, it is rather common for someone to crack a joke. Some may roll their eyes, sigh and even condemn the one who told the joke and his co-conspirators who laughed at it. However, for the most part, the temporary relief following the laughter is welcomed, if not essential. It helps everyone to remain sane in an insane situation.

So what is my problem with Larry David’s joke?

Many groups develop a backstage language not meant to be understood nor shared by outsiders. It is how we talk when it's “only us.”

It can be a family around a Shabbat table or teachers in the teachers’ lounge. I have been in the company of Holocaust survivors who reverted to humor when describing indescribable situations from their past. It made sense only at that place and time. If anyone else outside of this group would use that kind of humor, it would be extremely rude and disrespectful.

And that’s exactly what Larry David did. Despite being Jewish, he is not a Holocaust survivor, and neither is his audience. He was talking to millions of people, some of whom are even Holocaust deniers. In the medical field, bioethicists consider gallows humor moral and appropriate only when it is contained to caregiver professionals. It is categorically unethical, even harmful, when directed at the patients and their families.

I usually love Larry David’s comedy, but for me, Holocaust jokes cross the line. We Jews have ample and better material for his self-deprecating humor.

B’shalom,

Rabbi Alon Levkovitz

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where, according to historical accounts Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. As we approach Chanukah this year and think of its meaning, I find myself thinking about how far we have come as a Synagogue. 34 years ago a small group from the community decided that the north county should have a Synagogue and a place for Jews to be able to attend Services, educate their children and a place to celebrate life cycle events.

by Bruce Cohenrenovated building and as we worship in our beautiful Sanctuary, I am struck by the tremendous effort, cooperation, thousands of hours of time put in by our Chidush team and everyone involved, and of course, none of this would have been possible without the amazing financial support we have received. The entire congregation is invited to join us on December 15th starting at 5:30pm for an Adult Cocktail Party as well as a separate Mocktail Party for the kids followed by a Menorah Lighting, Shabbat Service, & Temple Rededication at 6:30pm. We welcome and encourage you to bring your family’s menorah for the lighting ceremony that will occur at the Service. Our Chanukah Party will begin after the Service with Latkes, Sufganiyot (Jelly or Custard Doughnuts) desserts and many other wonderful surprises. I hope to see you there.Happy Chanukah to all,Thanks,Bruce [email protected]

For almost 20 years this small group met in churches, banks, homes, a storefront at 759 Parkway Street in Jupiter, then to a configuration of trailers on the site of the existing Synagogue. About 15 years ago the Synagogue had to build a building because the trailers were only a temporary structure that had to be replaced. You might think that the foresight of the members back then to build that wonderful 30,000 square foot building was amazing. They obviously felt the 250 families that made up Temple Beth Am back then would grow as it has but who would have imagined the building would have to be reconfigured and renovated as we have been doing with our Chidush Project over the last few years. But change was needed - and this December 15th as Temple Beth Am celebrates our annual Chanukah Festival we will commemorate the REDEDICATION of our second Temple at this location. We are so appreciative of the tremendous participation of our congregants to help Temple Beth Am achieve this milestone. As I look at our

We received many compliments for meaningfully using the Jerusalem motif in the Frankel’s Sanctuary and The Cohn Family Welcome Center. After reviewing many options for The Donor Recognition Wall, it became obvious that nothing will be more appropriate (and beautiful) than keeping our 3,000 year-old motif.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the donors and invite you to come and find your name on the Wall.

I also want to remind you that we designed the Recognition Wall with additional room for future donors at all levels. See Debbie Baseman or me for dedication opportunities.

Thank you,Mark Slifkin

The last 45 days have been a particularly busy and exciting time for Men’s Club.

On October 21 over 40 guests attended our “Annual Kick Off ” for the year dinner at Brio Restaurant in the Gardens Mall. Bob and Nanci Hochman made all the arrangements for this event, including an excellent sheet cake for dessert and the restaurant kicked in with a gratis service of Coffee/Tea. Thank you Bob and Nanci. Everyone left with a big smile on their face after spending a wonderful evening with old friends and making some new friends.

The next day, Sunday morning, Mark Slifkin hosted a lox & bagel “Sports” breakfast for 50 attendees at TBA featuring Guest Speaker Barry Weinberg, Sr. Medical Advisor for the St. Louis Cardinals. Barry discussed his career beginning with working for Bobby Knight at Indiana University, then minor league baseball, followed by a long stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals. That was followed by lively and pertinent questions from the attendees. Thank you Mark for bringing this event to fruition and Thank You Barry for a very interesting, cogent, and entertaining presentation.

Finally, on October 25, Men’s Club hosted its first Business Networking Event with Mel Wolfe coordinating the committee. Attendance at this event exceeded our expectations by a wide margin, as more than 85 TBA members and others joined together. Thank you Mel. Some attendees are already reaping rewards.

Mel prepared an “after the event” report, and I am taking the liberty of “borrowing” excerpts from that:

MEN'S CLUB HAPPENINGSby Harvey Silverman

“….our experience working together to achieve what was truly a wonderful 1st Business Networking Event has made us more than fellow Congregants of TBA, but truly friends.”

“….one of the more successful events in recent years.”

“Several persons have already inquired about our "next one."

“….special thanks are due Chef Eric and through him to each of his helpers, to my wife and BFF Linda for acting as a Greeter with very little notice and to Amanda Feld, with help from some of our children and grandchildren, who helped Eric produce and serve an amazing array of finger foods and beverages, and to Mark Slifkin who kept the room at a very comfortable temperature during the entire evening as well as to Brett Tancer who saw that we had two working microphones.”

I would be remiss in not noting the many volunteers who worked with Mel, including Bob Hochman, Mary Elias, David Elias, Joe Meshil, Jeff Klatzko, Kerrie Rhoades, M Dental (Karen & Ken Meinbach), Vargas Orthodontics (Ellen & Al Vargas), and finally our sponsors whose commitment and dedication helped to make the event a financial success: Gordon & Doner (Scott Fischer), Jeff Klatzko (with Merrill Lynch) as well as M Dental (Ken Meinbach, DDS) and Vargas Orthodontics (Al Vargas, DDS). Our deepest appreciation to you all!

Coming up on January 21 is a “Meet the Rabbi & TBA President Breakfast” giving all an opportunity to ask Rabbi Alon and our TBA President Bruce Cohen about our Temple, questions about

Judaism, or whatever else you'd like to ask, except no political questions.

On March 17 get ready for our always popular “Progressive Dinner” event where a number of our TBA members will open their homes for dinner, after cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at TBA, followed by dessert back at TBA.

On May 6, Men’s Club is holding the TBA Golf Tournament, at Sandhill Crane Golf Course. We anticipate a great fun time event. Non-Golfers are welcome to enjoy the post round lunch and festivities (fun for all). There will be numerous prizes and sponsorship opportunities.

Reserve the date now on your calendars.

Men’s Club can always utilize more volunteers, so….if you have the time and the desire to “give back” to our Temple, come join our Volunteer Group. I am sure you will find us friendly, and I can guarantee a “fun and personally rewarding” experience as you make new friends and your services contribute to the success of TBA. Just “shoot” us an email at [email protected] or call me at 561-758-1293.

Men’s Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:00pm in the Temple, generally followed by an informal dinner at a local “pub” for those who wish to join. Come to our meeting, you will be warmly welcomed and have an enjoyable evening.

Email [email protected] for reservations.

Dear Friends,

We are re-introducing Lotsa Helping Hands to Temple Beth Am’s community. Lotsa Helping Hands is a web-based volunteer organization platform that we use to alert our core of volunteers when the need arises. At this time, we are using it to offer support to families who are going through a rough patch, like a health crisis (but not only!), by providing dinners for a limited amount of time.

If you wish to participate, and help out by making and delivering a meal, you can sign up for Temple Beth Am’s Lotsa Helping Hands community. Please send me an email at [email protected] so I can send you an email invitation with easy to follow directions.

If you cannot reach me, please contact Carol Sleeper at [email protected].

Thanks for lending a hand,

Gali [email protected] P.S. If you feel that your family could benefit from this communal service or you know of someone in our Temple Beth Am community including The One School, please also email either Carol or me. We all go through rough times. We don’t have to do it alone!

For centuries, soup kitchens have been a way for local communities to offer a way of support, both nutritional and emotional to their less lucky neighbors.

Volunteers from Temple Beth Am provide over 200 hot, healthy dinners to the needy at St. George's Episcopal Church, in Riviera Beach, the 3rd Monday of each Month.

The meals will be prepared on the 3rd Sunday of the month in the kitchen at TBA. If you would like to help Chef Eric cook the meals or can drop off boxes of penne pasta or elbow macaroni, please contact ERIC WEINER at [email protected].

We would like to give a special thanks to Judy and Jim Bloom for their generous donation to help buy the food for the Soup Kitchen for the next 12 months.

Thank you to our October and November volunteers.

Our next soup kitchen will be December 18th, 5:00pm to 6:30pm. Contact Lauren Weinstein at [email protected] if you can volunteer!!

Thanks to all who came out for our first book club meeting of the 2017-2018 season.

We had a lively discussion of The Bridal Chair by Gloria Goldreich and then a lovely and relaxed lunch at Sinclair’s at the Jupiter Beach Resort.

Our next meeting will be on Monday, December 4 at 10:30am at the Temple. The book is:

BOOK CLUBTHE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS by Rebecca Skloot - Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.

We will meet afterwards for lunch at Vic and Angelo’s, 4520 PGA Blvd, Palm Beach Gardens.

As I will be out of town that day, CK Tenenbaum has graciously agreed to facilitate the book discussion. Please let her know whether you will be attending the Book Club and/or the luncheon afterwards. ([email protected])

MAZEL TOVBAR MITZVAH OF DYLAN SCOTT RICHMAN

With great pride, love and joy we announce the Bar Mitzvah of our son, Dylan Scott Richman on December 2, 2017 at Temple Beth Am.

Dylan is one of four brothers, so as everyone can imagine, he is an avid sports fan and enjoys

being part of a busy household. Basketball is Dylan’s favorite sport, and he began dribbling a basketball as soon as he could hold it.

Dylan is a seventh grader at The Benjamin Middle School. He enjoys studying history and journalism. He is also very interested in world events and politics. Dylan has discovered that he loves traveling, and is excited to visit Israel this coming summer.

When Dylan’s grandmother was ill this past year, Dylan noticed that many of the elderly people in the hospital and rehabilitation facility were lonely and lacked visits from family and loved ones. Dylan was inspired to visit with the elderly and discovered that he learned from their life experiences as well. Dylan’s loving and compassionate nature also inspires him to care for animals, and he has accordingly volunteered time at animal shelters. For Dylan, life is a mitzvah project, and he enjoys finding ways every day to make a difference in someone’s life.

Dylan is very excited about his Bar Mitzvah and is working very hard at his Torah portion. He is looking forward to celebrating with his friends and family, many of whom are coming from New York and Pennsylvania. Dylan is truly grateful for the help, guidance and support that he has received from his Temple Beth Am family, including Rabbinic Intern Brett Tancer, Rabbi Alon Levkovitz, Cantor Jessica Turnoff Ferrari, and the Hebrew School staff.

BAR MITZVAH OF ZACHARY DAVID THOMAS

We are proud to announce our son, Zachary David Thomas, will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on December 16, 2017.

Zach is in the seventh grade at Jupiter Middle School, where he’s managed to make the honor roll every quarter.

Atop of his studies, Zach enjoys playing football and baseball. In his spare time, Zach is fishing, hanging out with his buddies at the beach, or flying his flight simulator.

The mitzvah project Zach has chosen is spending time with the elderly in our community. He has a fondness for their wisdom and a desire to make sure they’re not forgotten.

Our family is so grateful for the love and guidance that Rabbi Alon, Cantor Jessica, Brett Tancer, and the entire Jewish community have given our son over the years.

Risa and Francois Thomas

The Miracle of Chanukah

Miracle: 1. An extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs. 2. An extremely outstanding or unusual event, thing, or accomplishment. Merriam-Webster Dictionary The Torah is full of miracles. Jewish history is dependent on miracles, and of course, the story of Chanukah is replete with miracles. There is much debate about which is the true miracle, but ultimately for young children, finding the true miracle is not the most important quest. The book of Maccabees details the struggle between Antiochus, the Greek ruler of Syria, and the Maccabees-Jews dedicated to God and to the preservation of Jewish life. In 168 B.C.E. Antiochus decreed that all the people under his rule must Hellenize; that is, adopt the culture of the Greeks. That meant practice of Judaism was outlawed. When Antiochus’ soldiers came to the town of Modin, in Israel, they set up an altar in the Jewish temple. They commanded the Jews to sacrifice a pig on the altar to demonstrate their loyalty to Antiochus and the Greek god Zeus. Mattathias and his five sons retreated to the hills with their army and fought back. With the leadership of Judah the Maccabee, they defeated the Greeks. During the fight, they missed the eight-day holiday of Sukkot. They cleaned and sanctified the temple and declared a better-late-than-never celebration of Sukkot. The Rabbis, writing some 500 years later, barely mentioned the battle between the Maccabees and the Greeks. Instead, they focused on the sanctification and the rededication of the Temple. This is the story of the one small cruse of oil which was only supposed to last for one day and lasted for eight. The next year they ordained these days a holiday, as it seems the rabbi did not want to stress the role of the battle, but rather, the role of God over the strength of people. To this day, many modern versions combine the story of the battle with the story of the miracle of the oil! For young children, so many things throughout the day are awesome, incredible and even miraculous. We as parents and teachers have that opportunity to foster this wonder and support the discovery of daily miracles. Chanukah can set the tone for the rest of the year, training children to be miracle seekers. Once we have learned about the miracles of Chanukah, the question becomes, “Are there any miracles today? From the birth of a new sibling, to the creation of a new friendship and to a beautiful flower on a tree or bush, children will recognize miracles in their daily life. And their personal miracles will take place alongside all those miracles of the old days, like the creation of the world, and the crossing of the Sea of Reeds. No one will be concerned with which miracle is the true miracle. The more miracles, the better! Fill your homes with all the wonderful smells, sounds, sights and tastes of Chanukah that you remember as being special. Remember that young children learn through their five senses and be sure to include children in holiday preparation for a complete learning experience. Expose children to the beauty and warmth of our faith not only on Chanukah but also on Rosh Hashanah, Sukkot, Tu B’Shevat, Purim, Pesach, and weekly on Shabbat. Parents are Jewish children’s most important role models. So enjoy all the miracles!

Thank you to this year’s PTO Scholastic Book Fair Chairs, Kate Alvarez and Anna Roffer, for coordinating our PJ Day Kick-off and Book Fair event, and to all of the parents who volunteered to work during the fair. MISHPACHA FAMILY CENTER NEWS

“Childhood is something precious to be celebrated and shared. You'll be amazed to see your child's individual journey of discovery and learning.”

A big Thank You to Dr. Heidi Cherwony for her very informative workshop on The Kindergarten Dilemma at the Temple Beth Am Mishpacha/Family Center. Dr. Cherwony stressed that as parents we can often be overwhelmed by all the schooling choices in our area. She focused on the importance of looking at “the WHOLE child” and the options for schools that would provide the best environment for YOUR particular child. Most importantly, remember that children need to be children. Read to them and allow them to use their imaginations and be creative in their own way! www.mindandbodydoctor.com
