The Methodist Hospital Foundation’s 21st annual Crystal Ball 2010, with the Beach Boys was held Sat-urday, Oct. 16, at the Pasa-dena Convention Center for an intimate crowd of about 1000.

Mike Love and Bruce Johnston were on top form Saturday night playing a relatively long set of their hits over the past 5 decades. From such classics as God Only Knows to Help Me Rhonda and Fun Fun Fun, the legendary band did not disappoint the $350 a plate dinner guests. Of course, when the Beach Boys played The Little Old Lady from Pasadena, they brought down the house. Bruce Johnston encouraged the audience on to its collective feet to hit the dance-floor.

Leader and front man Mike Love is one of rock’s foremost songwriters. With his cousin, Brian Wilson, Love wrote the classics “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “Cali-fornia Girls” and the Gram-my-nominated “Good Vi-

Perhaps it was the rain, perhaps it was the celebra-tion at the Buc but the coun-cil chambers was not at ca-pacity for the initial part of Tuesday evening’s special water meeting.

It’s not exactly Dick-ens but the deep division among residents who braved the elements to at-tend council Chambers Tuesday evening was ro-bustly evident. One side deeply believes that the city failed to notify the citizens legally about the potential water rate hike claiming a violation of Prop 218. The other side, if you will, be-lieves the city has the best interest(s) of the citizens in mind and agree that the city’s infrastructure of aged pipes need replacing and that a water rate increase is not only necessary it is vital to helping the city keep the quality of Sierra Madre wa-ter.

The Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley in partnership with the City of Monrovia is hosted the 20th Annual Make a Dif-ference Day, Saturday, Oc-tober 16, 2010.

Make a Difference Day is a national day of volunteering that matches local residents with com-munity service projects. In a single day, over 350 lo-cal volunteers completed projects for the Monrovia community through paint-ing, planting, organizing and cleaning. National Knock Knock Joke Day

I love it when events trigger memories. I watched a little 6-year-

old giggle uncontrollably today. It reminded of a column I wrote about when my friend Louise and I lost control :

They say laughter is good for the soul. My soul must be in very good condition today though it possibly should be a little embarassed.

My friend, Louise, and I went to the theater last night. We sat in the third row from the front, a high-ly visible position.

The play was a com-edy/mystery. It had some funny lines but it wasn’t hysterically laughable. In fact, it was a little slow at times. Louise and I were dead tired and laced with a glass of wine. We were on the let-down end of a treadmill kind of day.

In the second act I no-ticed one of the most som-ber characters had a glob of something stuck on his left leg just above his knee. There really was nothing funny about that but I felt an irresistible urge to be sure Louise saw it too.

I started to whisper in her ear. I got tickled. Totally, uncontrollably tickled. I began to giggle. WE began to giggle. It was awful. Awful, awful. We could not stop. One would gain control and the other would lose it.

We tried painfully hard to be quiet but we kept emitting these strange little squeally, gurgly-like sounds. Titters, tee-hees and teeth-clenched snick-ers. I kept thinking, ‘Dear God, please don’t let me snort.’ I tend to do that when I get really tickled.

The mystery was solved and the story was getting serious. Struggle as we might, we could not. Silence would prevail for a few seconds until one of us would feel the other shak-ing and we were off again. Tears were rolling, noses were running, legs were crossed and sides were hurting.

Finally we both gained control. The shaking stopped and we were quiet. Louise wiped her mascara streaked cheeks. I blew my nose. In the middle of the blow, I lost it again. It was not a pretty sound.

Curtain call drowned the second snort and we were able to sedately walk up the aisle. In the lobby, we passed the owner of the theater. He said, “I’m really glad you ladies en-joyed the show so much.”

We both lost it again. WE WERE NOT 6.

about the all class reunion especially the photos. I wanted to add my thoughts about the reunion:

WOW!!! A day in San Diego aboard the museum aircraft carrier MIDWAY. Thanks to Jim Reagan, his commitee and the MAD class of 1950, a great one time only all class reunion was recently held. The ship was toured from bow to stern and top to bottom.

Over 350 classmates and friends attended. This included special invited guests of Marine DIs from MCRD San DIEGO. A buf-fet dinner followed by mu-sic and entertainment of the 40s. The evening climaxed with a fireworks display off of the ships bow.

Al in all, a great time was enjoyed with friend and class mates of years gone by.

alleging the city misled the public, spoke at the special meeting Tuesday voicing their concerns with the city attorney and city manager on the matter of Proposi-tion 218, proposed rate hikes as well as the Bond indebtedness.

At the meeting Tues-day, City Attorney San-dra Levin fortified the city against Crawford and Zim-merman’s accusations that the process violated Propo-sition 218.

A total of 1,719 valid protests were received against the original pro-posed rate hike, which is 129 short of the 1,848 need-ed for a majority to defeat the proposal.

Dixie Coutant and Pat Birdsall spoke in favor of a water rate hike and pro-posed some potentially sound conservation mea-sures residents could imple-ment to conserve water.

Meanwhile, Faye An-gus got up to the podium and demanded to know the exact Bond amounts the city owes. Mayor Mosca said the council would give the figures later, but Angus was insistent that she couldn’t intelligently discuss the mat-ter at the podium without having those bond figures. Visibly irritated with Mayor Mosca, Angus left the po-dium and said “Lighten up Mr. Mayor.”

Throughout public comment there was a series of applause. Both sides of the issue seemed to have equal support. Mayor Mosca asked the public to refrain from applause until the end of public comment out of respect for those who may want to speak on the issue, few took notice.

One resident , Paul Hovsepian, got up and spoke about conservation measures and the impor-tance of the looking at the facts and not accusations of impropriety. When he left the podium he passed by John Crawford, who is a staunch opponent of all but one on the city council,

and said “ Grow up “ to Crawford’s face. Presum-ably, this was a reaction to Crawford’s blog and its supporters who vehement-ly oppose the majority of council.

After public comment City Council directed staff to bring back new propos-als for a potential water rate hike including ones that dis-tribute an increase evenly over a period time. Council asked for the proposals for next city council meeting.

Councilwoman Mary-Ann MacGillivray said she was opposed having a tiered structure since many residents claiming that resi-dents in the city are already conserva t ion -minded. MacGillivray also said that residents should be given an opportunity to protest the new proposal pursuant to Proposition 218 proce-dures.

According to City Manager Elaine Aguilar, The City’s outstanding wa-ter fund debt as of 6/30/2010 is as follows:

1. 1998 Water Reve-nue Refunding Bonds $4.5 million ; 2. 2003 Water Rev-enue Parity Bonds $12.6 million. Plus there’s one loan: San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District Loan $1.5 million.

The next City council meeting is Oct 26.

As you know judges cannot comment on any elections save those that directly affect the judiciary and this includes making endorsements and recom-mendation regarding judi-cial candidates. Here are my picks for the upcoming election.

The some of the Cali-fornia Supreme Justices and several members of the Court of Appeals are up for retention. I may not agree with all the decision made by these jurists, but none of them have acted in such an egregious manner as to justify being removed from office.

Three Superior Court races appear on the ballot. In one case, that of Judge Amy D. Hogue, she ap-pears on the ballot without any designation (job title) or opponent. Her name appears because someone has filed to run a write in campaign against her. I know of no reason to oust this judge. She is a sitting judge and I have been un-able to find out who is op-

posing her. I suggest that she be reelected. This is for office 136.

The other two races were open seats, i.e. one for offices with no incumbent. In the primary last June neither office has a clear victor with 51% of the vote; hence the run off. I stand by my recommendations in the primary. For once the Los Angeles Times and I are in complete agreement. They endorced both the candidates I did. My rec-ommendations are in bold face. The qualification rat-ing is from the Los Angeles County Bar Association.

Talk about enthusiasm. Pasadena Symphony’s got it: plenty of it. With Satur-day’s season opener with two performances—at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., there is a new venue, the Ambassador Auditorium, a new conduc-tor, Artistic Advisor to the Symphony, James DePreist, and a soloist, Anne Akiko Meyers, the violinist whose as modern as you can get given that she accepts club dates as well as full-scale clas-sical gigs.

You probably already know about Pasadena Sym-phony—that it is starting its 83rd season; and that its professional corps contain first rate classical musicians, many of whom are on the A-list for studio calls. You may or may not remember that Jorge Mester is not conduct-ing this year, but rather a season-long guest conductor list will lead this prestigious band with the lead-off leader James DePreist, currently Director of Conducting and Orchestral studies at the Jul-liard School in New York. Although DePreist may be a senior citizen (he’s 74), a number of principal posi-tions in the orchestra have gone to the next younger generation of musical sec-tion leaders, all of them fa-miliar faces in the orchestra. Andrew Pickens is now prin-cipal violist; Andrew Shul-man, principal cellist; Drew Dembowski, principal bass-ist. Aimee Kreston remains the concertmaster.

But I want to talk about the music program and es-pecially the violin soloist, Anne Akiko Meyers. She recently gave up her old Stradivarius which hailed

from 1730 and acquired, at bid auction, a 1697 Strad for a world-record setting price of $3.6 million. She will bring with her the 313 year-old instrument she says is full of “power, feel and range of color” to the Ambassador Auditorium to perform Sam-uel Barber’s Violin Concer-to, a work composed by the American in 1939. The 22 minute piece with Myers will be a knockout. With that new Stradivarius, it should be dynamite.

Like so many of our musicians of note today,

Meyers is right up there performing not only on the concert stage, but on some occasions, in clubs. She per-formed earlier this month at Yoshi’s, a Japanese res-taurant and jazz club in San Francisco. On Nov 4 she will return to the Fillmore

St. establishment with one of Southern California’s note pianists, Kevin Fitz-Gerald has her accompanist. Her new CD “The Seasons…Dreams” is already a popu-lar success. The 40 year-old Meyers is married and has a young child.

Other music on the lively program includes Rossini’s “La gazza ladra” (The thieving magpie”) and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.

Imagine driving your car though town with-out a fuel gauge. At

some point, you will try and estimate when it is time for you to put fuel in your tank. Sometimes you will over estimate and the fuel will over flow and sometimes you will under-estimate and find yourself stranded. Realistically, this is how your body responds to food and calories.

There is no mystery to losing weight, no magic for-mula simply calories in ver-sus calories out. If you do not know how many calo-ries you are taking in or ex-pending, how can you pos-sibly be expected to lose weight efficiently? I know keeping a food journal and reading labels or wearing a heart rate monitor might be an inconvenience, but you would not drive to Las Vegas with the just the hope that you put enough fuel into your car. We tend to eat the same things and do the same exercises regu-larly so once the habit of monitoring calories in and calories out is established, you tend remember the calorie content by heart.

Invest in a heart rate monitor with a calorie counter

Knowing how much energy you are expending during exercise is the first step to deciding how many calories you need to cut back on to lose weight. For

the last few weeks , I have worn my monitor through-out my regular exercise and here is the calories ex-penditure:

1 hour hill bike ride burned 350

40 minutes on station-ary bike at level 20 burned 250

50 minute Plyometric class burned 210

6 hour beach bike ride burned 1880

2 hour sprint bike ride burned 1100

I used this informa-tion to plan my meals and snack for the days that I do a particular activity. Also, it helped with time man-agement as I now know that if I only have an hour, the hill ride burns more calories than the Plyomet-ric class.

I could easily eat the same things every day so I got to know the calorie count for my regularly eat-en foods, so this made jour-naling less tedious. Write down the foods you eat every week and learn their caloric values:

Knowing how many calories you burn during your exercise and how many calories you need to further deduct from your daily intake will give you the magic num-ber to aim for every day. Choose foods that fill you up with less calories like whole wheat bread over crackers, for example.

The Pasadena Play-house rang the bell and opened its doors last week after a 9 month period of rebirth, if you will.

The opening play is a production featuring Ed Asner as one of America’s most beloved presidents, FDR.

Ed Asner, 81, not only is Franklin Delano Roosevelt -- he is also the show’s director, looking properly presidential, filled with the passion and perse-verance which made FDR such a grand and powerful president. I took my wife and mother in law Terry Mackenzie (who lived through the FDR years and whose family voted for FDR) to opening night last week.

She was awestruck by Asner’s ability not only to become FDR but how he remembered so many lines with historical accu-racy. “I can barely remem-ber where I left my tooth-brush” she quipped.

We were enthralled by his astonishing perfor-mance, enunciation and eloquence in the way he delivered the lines. With-out a doubt a terrific story, presented with such gusto and passion that perhaps only Ed Asner could do justice. You could feel the genuine passion this Presi-dent had for his country and fellow man channeled through Asner.

I feel drama crit-ics such as Los Angeles Times’ Charles McNulty, perhaps, needs to revisit the play

Aside from panning Asner’s performance in a recent review with nasty notes such as “monotonous rhythms” and stating that there were far too many

M o s t i n t e l l i g e n t theatre go-ers long for such illustri-ous perfor-mances. The h i s t o r i c a l significance of which is perhaps all the more ju-dicious with Tea Party republicans attempting to “take back” the country in the con-tentious mid-term elec-tions.

D o e s McNulty ex-pect dancing girls, ala Vegas and per-haps a 500 piece orchestra playing the French Na-tional anthem while the girls strip down to nothing. Now, while that would be lively fare indeed, but it’s not classic theatre as we know it.

Critics like McNulty seem to have lost the point. It is precisely plays like this that create and inspire. In-spire more study and per-haps more actors to tackle such a demanding role.

I left the theatre want-ing to learn more about FDR and his cabinet but also more of his opponents, “Martin, Barton in FISHH-HHHHHHHH…” As As-ner pronounced the names of the three politicians who would do anything to undermine FDR during his time in office. Each time Asner mentions their

names Martin….Barton….and FISSSSSSSSSSSH, with more passion than the previous recitation, the audience’s collective

laughter could have blown the roof off the historic the-atre. Martin, Barton and Fish were, of course, three Republican opponents of FDR’s New Deal policies

The play charts Roo-sevelt’s rise from a self described “Polio-inflicted upside-down turtle” to an extremely popular, four-term President of the Unit-ed States.

The work covers a lot of ground: from the elec-toral wars with opponents like Wendell Willkie and Thomas Dewey, to FDR’s perseverance of not allow-ing his illness to cripple him, his strength and guid-ance leading the country out of the Great Depres-sion, and his reaction when Japan bombs Pearl Harbor in 1941 where the famous words “A day that will live in Infamy” were born.

Critics such as Mc-Nulty said “When Asner isn’t mumbling or slipping into lethargic tones -- which happens too often -- he can

be quite commanding.” McNulty, if ever there was an understatement, this is it! Asner was unassailable.

Fittingly and simply called FDR, the play tells the story of the former pres-ident’s life and his time in office relayed through a se-ries of personal anecdotes. Ubiquitous humor and in-finite humanity, the script explores FDR’s battle with polio, his journey to the presidency, the contro-versial packing of the Su-preme Court, his marriage to Eleanor ( Babs ) and his affair with Lucy Mercer, the manipulation of Con-gress to get the draft, the courageous determination to break the Neutrality Act, and, of course, Pearl Harbor.

The role of FDR seemed tailor-made for Asner. As a long time po-

litical activist who jokingly refers to himself as “Hol-lywood’s resident com-munist,” Asner has spent a good portion of his life,

not unlike R o o s e v e l t , struggling for human rights.

The set is simple yet el-egant. While the 83-year-old Playhouse -- the second-oldest re-gional theater in the U.S. -- Sheldon Epps, artistic director since 1997 should be delighted with not only the perfor-mance but the patrons’ response to the Playhouse coming back to life. The play will run

through early November...Throughout Asner’s

long career, the actor has garnered a collection of industry trophies, includ-ing seven Emmy Awards,

five Golden Globe Awards and induction into the TV Academy Hall of Fame. Some Emmys were won for the dryness of his co-medic touch in Mary Ty-ler Moore shows. Others were earned through tack-ling the role of the morally conflicted slave trader in “Roots,” and, of course, perhaps his most well-known role of the cantan-kerous newspaper manag-ing editor in “Lou Grant.”

While I firmly main-tain I am no theatre critic, I know what I like in Live Theatre. Witnessing Asner as FDR is , without doubt, a must do experience.

Winning student exhibitions were on display for the presi-dent, who congratulated the students and handed out awards for their work. The Fair kicks off a week that will culminate with the USA Science and Engineering Festival on the National Mall and in 50 satellite locations, which is expected to engage more than a million people nationwide.

Local Girls Scouts Robotics Team visits President Obama

Over 100 local area se-nior citizens attended a lively and important lecture on the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease recently at the Mon-rovia Community Center, led by nationally recognized bioethicist, clinical professor of neurology, psychiatrist, author, and radio host Dr. Vincent Fortanasce, M.D.

The author of the best-selling book The Anti-Alzheimer’s Prescription, Dr Fortanasce talked about his own father’s slow and difficult decline into de-mentia, which sparked in him a deep desire to find a treatment that was effective. While there is still no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, Dr Fortanasce has developed

an effective 4 part plan to prevent the debilitating dis-ease, and/or slow its devel-opment. The better part of his 60 minute discussion was about a simple exercise regimen, the importance of proper rest, fun brain exer-cises, and daily diet recom-mendations.

Attendees were eager for the information and many found it helpful and easy to follow. At one point Dr Fortanasce had everyone in the audience following along with muscle-firming isometric exercises they could perform right in their seats.

Afterward, the doctor stayed to sign books and answer questions from at-tendees. Proceeds from the book are donated to charity,

“Ninety years is quite an accomplishment for any business, let alone a non-profit foster care organiza-

tion,” said Ralph Ramirez, Board President for Rose-mary Children’s Services. “But we could not have done this alone. It takes the local support of our com-munity to help our Agency withstand the test of time and strive.”

Guests in attendance were greeted by members of the Key Club of the Rosemary School, and were shown “A History of Car-ing,” a mini-documentary chronicling the 90 years of history of Rosemary Chil-dren’s Services in the com-munity. Acclaimed singer / songwriter Chelsea Nichole performed the “Rosemary Anthem,” a touching song that captures the essence of the mission of Rosemary Children’s Services. Greg Wessels, Executive Director for Rosemary Children’s Services, provided a “State of the Agency” address, out-lining the progress and goals

of the Agency.“With thousands of chil-

dren and youth entering into the foster care system every year, it is agencies like Rose-mary Children’s Services that are vital to providing the quality care and services to these ‘at-risk’ youth in our communities,” says Wessels. “As part of our strategic plan, we hope to expand programs and services, in-cluding mental health ser-vices within the community, as well as increase revenue streams to help support and fund these programs.”

Guests were able to tour the Cottage, Rosemary Children’s Services’ oldest residential group home for teenage foster girls, built in 1928, and previewed the Cottage Youth Fitness Cen-ter, an on-grounds fitness facility used to educate ap-proximately 150 teen foster girls annually in matters of health and fitness.

Despite a blistering first place finish by sopho-more Eryn Blakely (19:03) and a solid 2nd place fin-ish by senior Audrey Davy (21:51), the Jaguars Varsity cross-country team lost to San Gabriel Mission 28-60 at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl course. San Gabriel Mission’s top 5 runners finished 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th and 8th. The remainder of Alverno’s top 5 runners finished 16th (frosh Jessica Lopez), 20th (sophomore Ashley Haylett) and 21st (frosh Francesca Rueda).

Blakely, who has been dominating the Ho-rizon League competition since her freshman year, improved on her winning time (20:12) of two weeks ago in League competition against Holy Family at the 3-mile Rose Bowl course by 1:09.

Volunteers gathered for Make a Difference Day at Library Park and spread out on their appointed rounds.

The Monrovia Week-ly caught up with some of the volunteers working on renovating a home on N. Alta Vista where a resi-dent had signed up for as-sistance from the program. Scores of people painted, removed carpeting and cleared the back yard as part of the community project.

To celebrate 100 years of boy scouting in the Unit-ed States, the San Gabriel Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America will host a Cen-tennial Gala on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at The Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena. The Gala will feature a dinner, live and silent auctions, a centennial video and award presenta-tions. Proceeds of the event will fund the Council’s on-going programs supporting youth in the San Gabriel Valley. Distinguished Eagle Scout Sherwood Simpson will be recognized at the Gala as a 2010 inductee to the Boy Scouts Hall of Lead-ership.

The San Gabriel Valley Council serves more than 25,000 youth in 32 cit-ies in the San Gabriel Valley. The Boy Scouts of America prepares young people to

make ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of citizen-ship to improve our com-munities. The Boy Scout program offers opportunities for high adventure, camp-ing, achievements, leader-ship, service and citizenship. Boys can participate in Cub Scouts (grades 1 through 5) and Boy Scouts (grades 6 through 12). Girls and boys ages 14 to 20 participate in the BSA Venturing pro-gram. More than one in 10 boys (11 percent) in the Unit-ed States is currently a Scout. By the time boys reach adult-hood, 54 percent have been in a Scouting program at some time in their youth.

All Proceeds Will Benefit YWCA “WINGS” Domestic Violence Service

As millions of people get ready to participate in this week’s California Shake-Out practice drill, Southern California Gas Co. (The Gas Company) is reminding cus-tomers to prepare in advance for when the next real “Big One” hits.

The Gas Company of-fers these safety tips to help reduce the chance of injuries or property damage from the next quake:

Before an earthquake:• Securely strap water

heaters to prevent them from moving or toppling over. The water heater should be fastened securely to the wall studs in two places -- the up-per and lower one-third of the tank -- with heavy bolts and metal straps.

• Replace semi-rigid (aluminum or copper) gas appliance connectors with ap-proved connectors made of corrugated metal. These are less likely to crack during an earthquake. Connectors and water heater strapping kits are available at most hardware and home improvement stores.

• Know where the natu-

ral gas meter is located. Gas meters are commonly lo-cated above ground next to the home on the side, front or back, but may also be in a cabinet or below ground level.

• Have a 12-inch or larg-er adjustable wrench handy to manually turn off the gas meter should it be necessary if a gas leak is suspected after an emergency.

After an earth-quake:

• Do not turn off the gas meter after an earthquake, unless there is a gas smell, the sound of gas escaping, or other signs of a gas leak such as dirt, water or debris being blown into the air, or a fire near a pipeline. Once the gas has been turned off, it may take The Gas Company sev-eral days to restore service, depending on the magnitude of the emergency. Do not turn the gas back on yourself.

• If an appliance ap-pears to have a leak, turning off the valve between the ap-pliance and gas line may stop the leak. If not, shut off the gas at the meter.

• If there is an apparent

gas leak, remain calm. Do not light a match, candle or cigarette, and do not turn electrical devices – not even a light switch -- on or off. From a safe location, call The Gas Company at 1-800-427-2200 or 1-800-342-4545 in Spanish, 24 hours a day, seven days a week; or call 911.

• If a gas leak is sus-pected and it is safe to do so, turn the gas off at the meter. Using an adjustable wrench, make a quarter-turn of the valve, moving it from a ver-tical position to a horizontal position. This will shut off the flow of gas. (A diagram and instructions for turning off the gas meter are printed in the “Survival Guide” section of most telephone directory white pages and is also avail-able at www.socalgas.com).

• If the gas is shut off at the meter, do not turn it back on. Call The Gas Company to turn the meter back on and check your natural gas piping and equipment for safe op-eration.

The San Gabriel Val-ley Council, Boy Scouts of America, is proud to be honoring Mayor Mary Ann Lutz of the City of Monrovia with the Dis-tinguished Citizen Award on October 29, 2010 from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm at the DoubleTree Hotel locat-ed at 924 W. Huntington Drive in Monrovia.

The Distinguished Citizen Award is intended to honor prominent area leaders who have a wide influence in the commu-nity, while serving as ex-emplary role models for our young people. Mary Ann Lutz’s contributions to the quality of life in our community and her com-mitment to the values of Scouting make her a very deserving community lead-er and honoree.

In 2009, Mary Ann Lutz was elected as Mayor of the City of Monrovia having served as a City Council Member since 2003, after a long history of volunteering within her community. Mary Ann attended Boise State Uni-versity. Mary Ann is the owner of Lutz & Company, Inc., a court reporting con-sulting firm, in Monrovia.

Mary Ann is the Chair of the Los Angeles Region-al Water Quality Control

Board, an appointment by Governor Schwarzeneg-ger.

Mary Ann has been awarded the Iris Award (Monrovia Citizen of the

Year), California State Assembly Women of the Year and most recently the Monrovia School Dis-trict Administrator Asso-ciation’s Golden Apple Award.

Proceeds from the award dinner will help fund scouting programs of the local communities.

The San Gabriel Val-ley Council currently serves the communities in the San Gabriel Valley East to the 57 freeway, South to the 60 Freeway and west to La Canada. The Lucky

Baldwin District serves the cities of Monrovia, Arca-dia, Bradbury, Duarte, Si-erra Madre, Temple City, Azusa, Irwindale and Bald-win Park.

The potential for pro-viding a positive program to boys in our community is limitless. Too many of our youth are spending time alone with electronic gadgets without socializ-ing factors that generate greater appreciation for teamwork, leadership and friendships. Many of our youths would never have had the chance to experi-ence the great outdoors without active involvement in Scouting. Monies raised from the dinner honoring Mary Ann Lutz, Mayor of Monrovia, will be used to meet our goals in reach-ing youth and providing increased opportunities for outdoor learning.

Boy Scouts Honor Her Honor

In an effort to provide assistance to the 12 million Pakistanis rendered home-less or needing urgent assis-tance due to extreme flood-ing, the Arcadia Rotary Club embarked on a fundraiser last month to raise funds to provide temporary housing and other emergency sup-plies through the ShelterBox program.

“The news reports that a shocking 20 million people have been affected by the flooding with 10,000 schools leveled and 500 hospitals gone,” said Arcadia Rotary president-elect Dr. Brad Miller. “We set out to raise $5,000 and met the challenge with contributions from indi-viduals, The Rotary Founda-tion and the Arcadia High School Interact Club.”

According to Miller, “the Arcadia club challenged local Rotary clubs who usu-

ally work on their own proj-ects to work together to help save lives overseas.”

“Sierra Madre and Mon-rovia are working together to raise $5000 and Pasadena Rotary has pledged support for a third $5000,” said Mill-er. “For the $5000 raised by our club alone, the Founda-tion and our Interact mem-bers, matching grants from Rotary International and Dis-trict 5300 will raise the total to $17,000, enough to buy 17 ShelterBoxes that will shelter 170 people upon delivery.”

“We set out to raise $5000 and send five shelter boxes to Pakistan,” said Ar-cadia Rotarian Eric Barter. With donations from the other clubs, and additional matching grants, to be able to send 51 ShelterBoxes shows the power of Rotary at work! It is amazing!”

Inside each ShelterBox

is a tent that can house up to ten people for temporary shelter during disasters such as earthquakes or floods. ShelterBoxes also include items such as thermal blan-kets, cooking equipment and other lifesaving and comfort items, depending on the nature of the disaster, along with food and water purifica-tion supplies for up to three weeks.

“The Rotary Clubs of Rawilpindi and Islamabad in Pakistan are working with our clubs in the San Gabriel Valley to oversee the deliv-ery and installation of the ShelterBoxes,” added Miller.

Arcadia Rotary Spearheads Pakistani Flood Victims Drive

For the period of Sun-day, October 10, through Saturday, October 16, the Police Department respond-ed to 1,007 calls for service of which 134 required for-mal investigations. The fol-lowing is a summary report of the major incidents han-dled by the Department dur-ing this period.

Sunday, October 10:Around 9:42 a.m., offi-

cers detained a man by CVS Pharmacy, 188 West Las Tunas, for possibly stealing liquor from the store. The manager advised that two male African-American sus-pects were inside the store attempting to steal bottles of alcohol. The suspect’s vehicle was located and 15 bottles of stolen liquor were recovered. The 45-year-old suspect was taken into custo-dy for commercial burglary, receiving stolen property, and felony parole violation. The second suspect was not located during an area search.

A bicycle versus auto accident occurred at the in-tersection of Las Tunas and El Monte around 12:44 p.m. A 20-year-old male bicyclist rode through a red light and was struck by a vehicle. The bicyclist sustained head trau-ma and a laceration to his neck and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Monday, October 11:A traffic stop was con-

ducted in the 700 block of West Fairview around 2:28 a.m. for a cracked wind-shield. Two female and two male Hispanic occupants were contacted, and a con-cealed blade was found on one man and a sawed-off shotgun was found on the floorboard. Investigation re-vealed that the suspects were burglarizing vehicles, and a set of stolen golf clubs and computer equipment were recovered. The suspects, be-tween 19 to 32 years of age, were taken into custody for auto burglary, receiving sto-len property, and conspiracy to commit crime. One man was also charged with posses-sion of a knife and the other man with possession of a weapon.

Between 12:15 p.m. and 2:40 p.m., a residential bur-glary occurred in the 2300 block of Ivyland. Unknown suspect(s) entered the home through an open window and stole Louis Vitton ac-cessories, cash, and men’s watches.

Tuesday, October 12:Two female Hispanic

suspects were detained by Claire’s employees for theft around 6:15 p.m. at Westfield Mall. They were seen selecting merchandise and then concealing them in their pockets and purses. Private persons’ arrests were made, and a 14 and 20-year-old subjects were taken into custody for commercial burglary. Additional stolen property from Sanrio was also recovered.

Shortly before 10:00 p.m., units responded to the 600 block of South Second in reference to a domestic dispute. The victim advised that during an altercation her husband slapped her on the side of her face and then pulled out a machete from the closet. Fearing for her safety, she fled the house and contacted police. A 31-year-old male Hispanic was located and arrested for inflicting corporal injury to spouse and an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.

Wednesday, October 13:A residential burglary

occurred in the 700 block of Fairview between 8:25 a.m. and 1:20 p.m. Unknown suspect(s) pried open the kitchen door to gain entry into the home. Once inside, the suspect(s) ransacked the house and stole a laptop computer and a $1,900 bottle of whiskey.

The school resource of-ficer was called to Foothill Middle School around 3:30 p.m. regarding a student on campus with a knife. Inves-tigation revealed that the 13-year-old male Hispanic student brought a knife to school and had brandished the weapon on a dial-a-ride bus on October 8. The boy was arrested and later cited and released.

Thursday, October 14:Shortly after 10:00 a.m.,

officers were dispatched to Abercrombie & Fitch regard-ing a theft that occurred on October 7. The regional loss prevention manager was re-viewing security video foot-age from the Arcadia store and discovered that two male Hispanic suspects removed numerous shirts from a dis-play table around 2:00 p.m. One of the suspects returned several hours later and stole additional property.

Units were called to the 100 block of East Grandview in reference to a residential burglary. The reporting par-ty advised that he was driving

by his daughter’s home that is under renovation and saw two male Asian suspects car-rying a large appliance from the house and into a blue van. Further investigation re-vealed that the suspects stole a new stove, bathroom sink, and faucet for a loss of over $5,600.

Friday, October 15:A victim came to the

station around 11:10 a.m. to file a grand theft report. She was reviewing her checking account information online and discovered unauthor-ized transfers from her ac-count on September 27 and 28 for a total loss of over $6,650.

An auto burglary oc-curred in the 2400 block of South Baldwin between 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Un-known suspect(s) smashed a passenger window and stole a purse containing currency, checks, and camera for a total re-ported loss of $1,260.

Saturday, O c t o b e r 16:

Units respond-ed to Holy Angels Church, 370 Campus, around 4:30 a.m. in reference to an indecent exposure incident. Two fe-male janitors found a male Caucasian, in his 40’s, sleep-ing on a bench inside the church. He exposed him-self to the women when he was asked to leave. An area search was conducted, but the suspect was not found.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., loss prevention personnel from JC Penney advised that they had detained a woman for theft. She took numer-ous jewelry items and baby clothing into a fitting room and then concealed them in store bags. A private person’s arrest was made, and a 39-year-old Hispanic was taken into custody for commercial burglary and receiving stolen property. When officers’ searched her vehicle, they found ad-ditional stolen property from Macy’s and a bag filled with numerous fashion jewelry items.

Monrovia PDDuring the last seven

day period, the Police De-partment handled 541 ser-vice events, resulting in 94 investigations. Following are the last week’s highlighted issues and events:

Vehicle BurglaryOn October 7 at 12:47

p.m., an officer went to a residence in the 100 block of West Colorado regarding a vehicle burglary. The victim reported that his company’s vehicle was broken into sometime during the night. Investigation continuing.

Vehicle BurglaryOn October 7 at 3:20

p.m., an officer went to a park in the 1200 block of North Canyon on the report of a vehicle burglary. The victim parked his black Toy-ota Highlander in a lower level parking lot and went for a hike in the park. Upon his return, he found the pas-senger window broken out on his vehicle. His property was stolen and the investiga-tion continuing

Mental EvaluationOn October 7 at 9:31

p.m., an officer was dis-patched to the 100 block

of West Foothill re-garding a subject who wanted to

harm himself. A male sub-ject riding as a passenger in his moth-er’s vehicle had begun

stating he want-ed to harm himself

by ending his life. He was detained and taken to a hospital and held for mental evaluation.

Filing a False Police ReportOn October 7 at 11:38

p.m., officers responded to a location in the 200 block of Aspen regarding a subject attempting to repossess a ve-hicle when another subject exited the residence with an assault rifle. Officers arrived and detained the involved parties. The officers investi-gated and discovered there was no brandishing of a rifle. Officers interviewed the par-ties and the investigation is continuing.

Domestic Violence - Suspect Arrested

On October 8 at 12:55 a.m., officers responded to the 100 block of West Colorado on the report of a female stating she had been struck by her boyfriend. During the investigation, of-ficers discovered a battery had occurred and they ar-rested the male subject.

Traffic CollisionOn October 8 at 4:39

p.m., police received a call

reporting that a vehicle had ended up in the wash in the 1600 block of South Moun-tain. Monrovia Fire Depart-ment personnel responded and used a ladder to have the driver climb out of the wash. The driver was not injured. Los Angeles County Flood Control and tow ser-vice were notified.

Auto Burglaries / Search Warrant - Sus-pect Arrested

Since last May, there have been several auto bur-glaries in the 1200 block of North Canyon at the park. On October 7, officers were sent to the park regarding a suspicious vehicle. An officer located the suspicious vehi-cle and identified the driver. No crime was known at that time. Just after the subject was sent on his way, a call was received reporting an auto burglary at the park. Af-ter the investigation was con-ducted, it was determined that the person stopped by the officer was the suspect. Enough information was ob-tained for a search warrant. A search warrant was served on October 9, and items were recovered in the search that link the suspect to sev-eral burglaries. The suspect was taken into custody.

Grand Theft Auto Re-covery

On October 5, a 1994 Acura Integra was stolen from the 1300 block of South Alta Vista. On October 10, an officer patrolling in the 400 block of Genoa located the vehicle parked on the street in front of a residence. The stereo had been taken from the vehicle. Investiga-tion continuing.

Mental EvaluationOn October 11 at 11:56

p.m., a female subject came into the police lobby, cry-ing and asking for help. She stated her live-in-boyfriend of many years was acting crazy and was possibly sui-cidal. She said that when she left her residence, he was attempting to light things on fire in the rear yard. Of-ficers responded and located the male subject in the rear yard. He had started a very small fire on top of a wood-en table. Officers detained him and determined he was not mentally stable. He was transported to a hospital, where he was held for men-tal evaluation.

day, October 10th, to Satur-day October 16th, the Sierra Madre Police Department responded to approximately 352 calls for service.

Sunday, October 10th: 07:09 PM- Residential

Burglary, False Imprison-ment, 300 block W Sierra Madre blvd. A man broke into his ex-wife’s home and held her against her will. Of-ficers worked with the Glen-dora Police Department to find the suspect and later arrested him. The man was booked at the Pasadena Jail for burglary and false impris-onment.

Monday, October 11th:08:38 AM- Grand

Theft Exceeding 400 Dol-lars, 60 block Suffolk Ave. Suspect(s) entered an un-locked car garage and stole four tires mounted on Infin-ity alloy wheels.

Tuesday, October 12th:09:28 AM- Theft,

300 block, Foothill Ave. Suspect(s) entered a resi-dent’s garden and stole four buckets of oranges and one bucket of lemons from 3 fruit trees.

Wednesday, October 13th:01:22 PM: Embezzle-

ment, 700 block W Sierra Madre Bl. The case in-volves the victim loaning her vehicle to her boyfriend. The victim made multiple requests to her boyfriend for the past days to return the vehicle. The boyfriend agreed to return the vehicle.

09:06 PM- Battery/Against Current/ Ex spouse/Cohabit—non cohabit. 30 block W Sierra Madre Bl. The Police Department received a 911 call regard-ing an argument. Officers determined that a domestic battery occurred between a man and a woman, and arrested the man domestic violence.

Thursday, October 14th:09:56 PM-Petty Theft,

400 block W Highland Ave. Suspect(s) stole a seat cush-ion and pillows from two wooden chairs on the front porch of a residence.

Friday, October 15th: 08:06 AM- Property

Lost/Stolen, 100 block Esper-anza Ave. Suspect(s) stole a resident’s rear license plate to a vehicle. The owner had been shopping at Wal-Mart in Duarte where the theft may have occurred.
