The Tanakh: New Perspectives
Instructor: Michael Satlow, Professor of Religious Studies and Judaic Studies at Brown University
How should we read the Tanakh? Is it a source of ethical behavior and Jewish law? An accurate history of ancient Israel? A political document created to give authority to certain interest groups? A myth? A literary ction?
This course will explore these, and other, approaches to the Tanakh, highlighting the diverse ways in which this pivotal text has been, and continues to be, read throughout history.
Space is limited, so register today!www.teprov.org/Institute/DelveDeeper

M E R C I F U L C O N V E R S A T I O N S O N R A C E
Temple Emanu-El, in co-operation with the Rhode
Island State Council of Churches, will hold a series
of conversations on the dynamics of race in our
culture. Merciful Conversations on Race explores
how white privilege functions in society and in
religious communities, and the ways that it negatively
impacts people of color. The course seeks to create a
positive and trusting space to explore why race
conversations can be a struggle, provide help for
overcoming this challenge, and opportunities to
further racial reconciliation on both personal and
systemic levels.
These conversations will be based on a curriculum
developed by the United Church of Christ, with
materials adapted for conversations in a Jewish
context. Rev. Betsy Aldrich Garland and Pastor
Chontell Williams of the Rhode Island State Council
of Churches, along with Rabbi Wayne Franklin, will
guide the discussions.
These conversations will beheld at Temple Emanu-El,

In addition to his enduring contributions to science and government, Benjamin Franklin also managed to influence Jewish thought and practice, a feat he accomplished posthumously through his famous autobiography and its Art of Virtue, which found their way into Eastern European rabbinic circles in the early nineteenth century. Join Providence author Shai Afsai — whose writings have been published in Anthropology Today, Journal of the American Revolution, Reading Religion, Reform Jewish Quarterly, Rhode Island History, Rhode Island Jewish Historical Notes, and Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies — at the Rhode Island Jewish Museum/Sons of Jacob Synagogue for an exploration of this intriguing subject.

On Friday, October 19, 2018, the Brown University Library will host the Ungerleider Haggadot Symposium, drawing on material from the Dr. Steven Ungerleider Collection of Haggadot. Free and open to the public, the symposium will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Digital Scholarship Lab at the Rockefeller Library. A kosher reception will follow the discussion.
Whether artistically elegant or plainly made, the Passover haggadah encapsulates much more than the simple retelling of the Biblical story of Moses leading the Hebrew people out of Egypt to the Prom-ised Land. In its inculcation of scholarly commentary and its embod-iment of ritual performance, it has provided a “mirror to Jewish his-tory” for generation upon generation of Jews, all within the context of familial life. In this symposium, moderated by Adam Teller, Brown University Professor of History and Judaic Studies, three renowned scholars of Judaism and material culture will discuss aspects of the haggadah and how it was shaped to respond to the varied needs of ritual life across time and the Jewish diaspora.
