President’s Message Words from the Rabbi

The future... It's a concept with which we all have a unique relationship. There are many aspects of our lives which require us to "think about the future" - our children, our retirement, our planet, AND our Temple. The leadership members at Temple Emanu-El have been very focused recently on the future of Temple Emanu-El in two distinct ways. First, a "Visioning Committee" has been formed, led by Executive Committee member, Jim Heerwagen, and has met several times to begin the process of envisioning our community's future. Soon this group will begin meeting with some of you in our congrega-tion to join in on this conversation about what the future looks like in your minds - and in your hearts. Your feedback will be incorporated into the decisions we make about the direction of our programs and our infrastructure.

Secondly, the Temple's Endowment Committee, which was formed two years ago under the tireless leadership of Ruth Krandel, has recently come together again to review the pro-gress we've made in establishing this crucial component in the success of our future, and to forge a path ahead in grow-ing the base of this fund. Ruth's vision and careful guidance resulted in the creation of our Temple's Endowment Fund, housed at the Jewish Community Federation of San Fran-cisco. Over $150,000 has been raised to date and is being carefully managed by the investment professionals at the Federation. Ruth has now retired as Chair of the Endowment Committee after two years of superb oversight. All of us on the Board of Trustees want to extend our deepest gratitude to Ruth for her efforts. This project was truly a labor of love as I don't know that I've ever met anyone more committed to the future vibrancy of our Temple than Ruth Krandel. As we enter the next phase of growth for the Endowment, I am thrilled to announce that Marvin Fox has agreed to be the new Chair of the Endowment Committee. I'm confident that Marv's passion for Temple Emanu-El and its future will lead this committee forward successfully.

The legacy we as individual congregants will leave is depend-ent on the commitments we are all willing to make in this effort today. More information on how to make "Legacy Gifts" - gifts that come from estate planning and trusts, will soon be made available to all our members. This is one of the most significant gifts you can make to our Temple. Without these investments now, the future of our synagogue is left unsecured. We must all reflect on our commitment to the next generation - L'Dor V'Dor... All of us on The Endowment Committee (myself included) look forward to meeting with many of you personally to share with you about Legacy Giving and to provide resources to help you and your family make these important decisions.

-Jeff Hoffman

Have you ever sat in our Chapel? I

am sure you have sat many times in

our Sanctuary. Don’t worry, I am not taking role! Our Chapel has an energy about it that is like no other place in the Synagogue. It is a simple space, next door to my office. The wooden pews take me back to my child-hood. The wooden Aron HaKodesh (Holy Ark) is stunning. The energy in that Chapel feels to me like a mix of tradition and classical reform. I feel a sense of pride and of humility. The stained glass windows are actually from our original site on 3rd and San Antonio. I can only imagine how they must have looked in our original Synagogue, Bikkur Cholim, before our name changed to Temple Emanu-El.

Over the course of my fourteen years at the Shul I have found the Chapel to be one of my spiritual spots, a place to meditate and to reflect. And we have used the Chapel for small weddings and funerals as well as for our morning Holy Day services like Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Pesach, Shavuot and for our Yizkor services we have throughout the year. It is a truly holy space.

A few months back as you are aware we had the lighting on our Bimah of the Sanctuary re-done. We also repainted the ceiling of the Bimah as well as re-doing the “Ten Commandments” sculpture. Thanks to Sherman Zell, a devoted congregant who wanted to be able to see his wife Lois sing in the choir, we have new lights on the Bimah!!! But in doing the renovation on the ceiling of the Bimah we realized with the new color and the new feel that maybe we need a new Ner Tamid, eternal lamp. So with the help of Bob Hersch, a former president and lifelong member who was present at the dedication of our Sanctuary on University, we put together a mini committee to discuss our options. So with Bob Hersch we added Mort Berlant, Mark Atlas and Marvin Fox. We sat down and discussed what we thought. We learned that the Ner Tamid, like the stained glass windows of the Chapel, come from the original building on 3rd and San Antonio. So it hit us… maybe we should turn the Chapel into an homage to our original site of Bikkur Cholim. Put the Ner Tamid in the chapel, redo the flooring and carpeting, clean up the stained glass windows, redo the lighting as we are going to do with the Sanctuary anyway and create an historical area where we would have the picture of our original building and a brief history.

Our small committee has become excited about this potential but we have one more piece to do before we move forward. We need to hear from our congregants. What do you think? If you would like the opportunity to share with us what you think, to either support our idea of a Bikkur Cholim Chapel and putting in a new and modern Ner Tamid in the Sanctuary, or if you have some reservations about the idea, then please join us in the Chapel on Sunday March 10 at 11:30 so we can have an open discussion. If you are unable to attend feel free to contact me or any member of the committee with your opinion.

I hope this idea excites you as much as it does me!

Kama’s Corner

The first meeting I ever attended as incom-ing Executive Director of Temple Emanu-El was the Annual Meeting of the Board of Trustees in May of last year. It took place

in the Temple House. I was excited to meet so many of you for the first time and I was looking forward to learning more about the Temple from the presentations to be given that night by the Board. As the presentations began, I strained with all my might to understand what each speaker was say-ing into the microphone. Sadly, I didn't really hear much of what was said that night. I sat there thinking, "If I can help change just one thing at this Temple, it will be this sound system."

I soon met Sid Rosenberg and in him found someone deeply determined to improve the quality of sound in that wonderful space. Then I had lunch with Ruth Krandel and JoAnn Shank, and found two more congregants who couldn't wait another moment to see that problem solved. And then Marvin Fox and Rick Davis shared their concern as well and sud-denly, I had a "power team" of devoted members of the con-gregation who meant business in fixing the sound in our Temple House.

The rest, as they say, is now history. Please join us for Rock Shabbat on March 15 to enjoy the terrific improvements to the sound system and acoustics. I am so grateful to these members and donors for their commitment and their generos-ity. We will honor their contributions and dedication at the March 15 Rock Shabbat.

There's been a lot of talk around here about "Legacy" lately... What will future generations of Temple Emanu-El members find here when they look around 10, 20, 30 years from now? What will the legacy of today's congregants be? There are so many opportunities for long-term improvements and I hope many of you will be so inspired by one of these projects that you will jump in with both feet - as Sid, Ruth, JoAnn, Marv, and Rick did. I look forward to the next "legacy improvement" we take on together!

Congregational Second Night Seder

Moses Maimonides (1135 CE-1204 CE) Few have attained the heights of thought & scholarship scaled by Maimonides (Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, or Rambam, as he was called). His genius revealed itself in many fields of spiri-tual & scientific activity: in law, philosophy, medicine, astron-omy & logic. He wrote many extraordinary scholarly works, & was the acknowledged head of the Jewish Community in Egypt & the revered leader of all Jewry. His authority ex-tended as far as the distant land of Yemen. Maimonides was born in Cordova Spain on Passover eve, in year 1135. ( His father was a noted Hebrew scholar who traced his ancestry to the House of David). Due to severe Jew-ish persecution, the family of Maimonides left Cordova & wan-dered from land to land, finally settling in Cairo, Egypt. Dur-ing this period in Cairo, he composed his renowned 14-volume Mishna Torah, a monumental, comprehensive & sys-tematic code of Jewish law, organized & written in a clear, lucid style. Included herein, he also developed his famous 13 Articles of Jewish Faith, as well as enumerating & explaining the 613 Commandments, both of which were incorporated in orthodox prayerbooks. The greatest work of medieval philosophy is Maimonides’ “Guide to the Perplexed,” considered among scholars as the most influential (as well as controversial) Jewish books of all time. It is studied assiduously by Jewish, Christian & Muslim scholars alike. It served as the first liberal education to many a Talmud- weary -Yeshiva bocher (young man) of past ages. The book is an attempt to bring philosophy into harmony with religion. The first to: proclaim the sovereignty of reason, to explore the Bible with an open mind, to rationalize beliefs & practices which for a thousand years were obeyed blindly, to span a bridge between Moses & Aristotle, & between the bib-lical conception of God & the Universe. As the name implies, the “Guide” was designed to deal with the religious difficulties of the orthodox Jew who fell under the influence of the current philosophical ideas. To Maimonides, God is above human ken. Scripture pictures God in human form, & attributes (Anthropomorphic) to God the organic faculties & passions possessed by mortals. To Maimonides, the belief in God as a body is worse than idolatry- The only knowledge we may have of God is through God’s acts which are Moral & are for humans to imitate. Human’s Ethical perfection, one’s Character & Conduct, depends upon one’s freedom of action &, therefore, is responsible for one’s Deeds & Misdeeds. Maimonides, who conceived God ration-ally, demanded that the worship be Intellectual, instead of Emotional. The evil & suffering in the world seem to be in di-rect contradiction to Rambam, who proclaims God as the ulti-mate cause of all that exists. He circumvents this, however, by stating that Evil is not a Positive, but a Negative condition for which We All, not God, are responsible. Having acquired this knowledge (the development of one’s In-tellectual & Spiritual qualities), says Maimonides, we “will then be determined always to seek Loving Kindness, good Judgement & Righteousness, & to Imitate the ways of God.” The “Guide” breathed life into the old faith by introducing the scientific spirit into Judaism: he served as protest against the superstitions that corroded religion, by making Jews think more rationally about their religious tradition. At a UNESCO conference in 1985, honoring the 850th anniversary of his birth, a scholar, Shlomo Pines, summarized the conference, as follows: “Maimonides is the most influential Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages, & quite possibly of all time” (Time magazine, Dec 23,1985). As a popular Jewish expression of the Middle Ages declares: From Moses (of the Torah) to Moses (Maimonides) there was none like Moses.” - Sid Rosenberg, Ritual Committee

Brotherhood Blood Drive

Child Adovocates

On Friday, March 8 we will have special guest speakers from Child Advocates of Silicon Valley speak to our congregation during the Shabbat Service. We hope that you will attend and learn about the amazing work that this organization does and learn more about how you can get involved.

The mission of Child Advocates of Silicon Valley is to provide stability and hope to abused and neglected children by be-ing a powerful voice in their lives. Our vision is that every child has a positive view of the future and the opportunity to become a productive, healthy adult.

HISTORY OF CHILD ADVOCATES OF SILICON VALLEY

Child Advocates started in 1986 when the Santa Clara County Dependency Court Judge, Len Edwards, and a community vol-unteer, Nora Manchester, found that there was too little information about the children for whom the court was making life-determining decisions. Judge Edwards asked Nora to recruit volunteers who could become the eyes and ears of the court as well as friends of the children, so when these decisions are made an adult could be present who knows and understands the child and could make recommendations to the court about what is in the child's best interest. After serving more than 10,000 abused and neglected children since our beginning 26 years ago, this is the same mission Child Advocates performs today.

CHILDREN AND VOLUNTEERS

Over 50% of the children we serve in Santa Clara County are Hispanic/Latino. Child Advocates sup-ports the children through its Advocate volunteers. Child Advocate volunteers serve abused or neglected children who have become dependants of the state and are cared for within the foster care system. There are nearly 1,500 of these children in Santa Clara County ranging in age from birth to 19 years old. These children may be living in shelters, group homes, institutions, and/or foster homes. We match a caring, trained adult volunteer to each child on a one-to-one basis. The volunteer is sworn in as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and provides his/her recommendations about the child to the court, while providing a comforting and supportive relationship with the child. For the year ended June 30, 2012, the Agency served 569 chil-dren with 16 direct staff and nearly 500 volunteers.

And those we have lost in years past

Connor Jacob Turetzky, will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday March 16. Connor was born on February 3, 2000 and is currently a 7th grader at Bret Harte Middle school. Connor’s par-ents are Greg and Sharon Turetzky and Connor has a big sister, Kira. Connor likes spending his spare time gaming with friends on Skype, playing games such as Team Fortress II and Plague. Connor is also an avid reader, enjoys fishing, walking his dog, Dobby, and he enjoys scouting ac-tivities with his troop 274. For Connor’s Bar Mitzvah project Connor has devoted a lot of time establishing an anti-bully club at his school. Connor read about SVIC (Silicon Valley Interschool Council) in the local newspaper and contacted them to find out how to bring SVIC to Bret Harte. Though SVIC is only on High School cam-puses they agreed to a partnership to bring the OKC (One Kind Heart) to the first middle school campus. Thanks to Connor’s perseverance the OKC is now meeting every Tuesday and Thursday at Bret Harte. The school administration is giving Connor and the OKC their full backing and recognize that there was a need for this type of club.

To find out more information about the OKC or SVIC you can visit the following web pages;

MARCH into eScrip

eScrip marches to the beat of a different drummer. Why? A percentage of your purchases and dining go directly to Tem-ple. Now, isn't that different? Last year we earned $2,455.

If you are not already a supporter of our eScrip program, MARCH right over to your computer, sign on at www.escrip.com. and follow the prompts. When shopping at eScrip merchants you must use a registered card for Tem-ple to earn money. Temple's ID# is 136985180. Register your Safeway Club Card, and at least one credit/debit card. If you phone me I can register you from my computer. There's no muss, no fuss, no bother, no cost to you, so let's DRUM up money for Temple. Every dollar we earn is important.

Many thanks to our 295 shoppers and eaters! As I've often said, you are staying connected to our Temple family in a very special way.
