Rabbi's Message
Rabbi Randi Musnitsky
Pesach has not yet begun, yet already people are asking ''When does Passover end?" It doesn't!
Yes, the matzah boxes will be emptied and the seder plate will be packed away for another year, but the concept of Pesach will always be with us. As in most Jewish holidays, the rites are but a minor part of the celebration. Passover is a commemoration of the release from slavery and the beginning of freedom.
It is difficult for us, free men, women and children to understand the meaning of slavery. It is a condition we can define, but thank God, we do not know how it feels.
As we gather around the Seder table, we act out through prayer, song and the observance of ritual, our people's movement away from slavery and toward freedom. But, we need to be aware that there were millions ofJews who were unable to make this journey.
Exodus, the central symbol of Pesach, is an event which occurred in our ancient life as Jews. Exodus is a modem event as well. Exodus is a continuous movement of all Jews, in all times, in all places, toward freedom. Exodus is an act of faith in the future, in the name of human dignity. Exodus, like Passover, is not over until all Jews everywhere have all the choices that we have this holiday season.
In gratitude for our blessing of freedom, may we so help other Jews to recognize their dream

May your Pesach be a good holiday and a time for you to do some good!

• PRESIDENT'S COLUMN •
By Alldy Weiner
With this issue of the Light, we are inaugurating some new features which I hope you will find both informative and enjoyable. First is this column, which I will utilize each month as a vehicle to share my thoughts concerning Temple Emanuel.
To keep you abreast of what the Board of Trustees is doing, we will also include a brief synopsis of the discussions and decisions of the Board of Trustees at their monthly meetings. Speaking of the Board, meetings are normally the second Monday night of every month. Congregants are welcome to attend.
This coming year will be the most exciting in Temple Emanuel history. With the influx of many new members, I do not want to lose the intimate feeling that we presently enjoy. If you believe that there are other actions that we can take to maintain a strong and cohesive congregation, please feel free to contact me or any other member of the board of Trustees.
Last, but certainly not least, the answer to the question: that I hear every day is, "Our new building will be ready for the High Holy days this year."
Board of Trustees March Meeting Synopsis
By Denise Weinberg, Secretary
• The new staff of the Pr~~School at Temple Emanuel is hard at work planning the curriculum, interviewing teachers and responding to inquiries. A lovely new brochure describing the programs and philosophy of the school, including registration information, is now available.
• All indications are that the new building project is on time (for early September) and on budget. Building committees continue to meet, including the newly formed Dedication Committee, in charge of planning the many exciting kick-off events. Openings are still available on this committee.
• Temple Emanuel's Social Action Committee is working on a brochure highlighting all the community service projects sponsored by the Temple. It will be mailed to all Temple members in the fall.
• After carefully reviewing the proposed 1992-93 Temple Emanuel Budget, the Board moved to accept it as is and recommend it to the Congregation.

Opportunities Needed for Soviet Emigres
The Russian emigre population in our 'community is continuing to grow. They are anxious to be acclimated to our American culture and workplace . . . professional job placement, however, is proving to be most challenging.
The Russians are eager to be independent and employment is the key to their futures . They need empathetic employers who will give them the opportunity they need.
Our community is rich in resources (employment resources!) and we are asking for them to be tapped. The urgency of this situation requires your help in employing the "New American" population.
Among the emigres currently looking for full time employment are computer programmers, electronic and computer technicians, maintenance workers, a chemical laboratory technician, drivers, and people searching for miscellaneous employment such as warehouse, stockroom, mailroom, assembly line, retail or general office work.
Funds are available for training in any skilled or semiskilled environment. Additionally, a tax credit may be available for hiring individuals from this specific target group.
You will find the emigres to be hard working and loyal employees. Many are willing to change careers in order to start their new lives in America. If you have any open positions or job leads, please call Debbie Oppenheimer, Job Developer for Soviet Resettlement, at the Jewish Family Service, 662-8611.

Questions and Answers About Passover (passover begins on Friday evening, April 17 -First Seder)
Q. What does the name mean? A. Pesach, translated Passover, comes from Exodus, the second Book of the
Bible, where the 10th Plague is described. It is stated that God saved the Jewish people by passing over their houses as He smote the houses of the Egyptians.
Q. What is the significance of Passover? A. Around the 13th century, B.C.E. (before the Common Era), the Jewish
people were living in Egypt. A new Pharaoh ascended the throne and engaged in a series of wars with his neighbors. Fearful that the Hebrews might join his enemies, he enslaved them. Forced to make bricks for the tremendous pyramids that were being built, the Jews led a bitter life, until they were rescued by Moses, who led them out of Egypt. The Passover holiday commemorates this delivery.
Q. What does the word Seder mean? A. Seder is a Hebrew word meaning order of procedure. On the first
evening of Pesach, a special order of service known as the Seder is conducted. When our ancestors left Egypt they celebrated their freedom with a special ceremony. Ever since then Jews have been observing this ceremony, and it has come to be called the Seder. The Seder is not merely a dinner. It is a celebration.
Q. What does Haggadah mean? A. It is a Hebrew word meaning The Story. It is also the name of the book
from which we read the service for the Seder. The New Union Haggadah is highly recommended. It is easy to read and beautifully illustrated. Sufficient Haggadahs should be on hand so that everyone can participate.
Q. What does Ma nishtana mean? A. These are two Hebrew words meaning "why is this different?" The four
questions the youngest child asks at the Seder start with "rna nishtana." The narrative is the reply.
Q. Why do we eat Matzah instead of bread on Passover? A. When our ancestors left Egypt, the Bible tells us, they had no time to
bake their bread in an oven, so they took along dough and baked it in the sun while traveling. The matzah reminds us of the bread of affliction or suffering which our ancestors ate in Egypt and of their haste to flee from the land of slavery. The meaning of the Hebrew word Matzah is
"unleavened. "

Youth Group Update By Sandy Umansky
Silly Riddle #3: 185 hairdressers went up to a bar. The Bartender said, "I,m sorry, we're closed. 185 hairdressers looked at their watches and said, liSa soon. II
Silly Riddle #4: What's black and white and red all over? An embarrassed zebra?, a newspaper??
Answer: Anyone reading these silly riddles!!!
You ask what is happening with Youth Group? Well, the answer is simple-everything!! This year's Purim Carnival on March 15th was as much fun for the SHOMRIM and TEFTY members who ran it as it was for the Sunday School children who attended. A huge thank you to each and every one of you who helped. TEFTY -lIES also volunteered for NCJW'S Canteen for the Differently Abled. Our teens learn how much more they get back when they give of themselves. Socially, IEFTY is planning their own Comedy Club Night on Saturday, April 25. Set aside the date now and plan to be here at Temple Emanuel for the most hilarious show yet!
SHOMRIM members also have an April social event in the works: a trip to New jersey's new Aquarium. Flyers will be in the mail real soon.
We have a very enthusiastic group of 5th and 6th graders (Tween Canteen) this year. Our movie night to see 'Wayne's World" was a lot of fun. Everyone enjoyed the movie and Haagen Dazs sundaes for dinner!
It's never too late to join any of our Youth Groups-so if you are in 5th through 10th grades, we have a place for you. Please call me if you would like more information on any of our activities or just how you can get involved and have fun with everyone. I can be reached at 429-6227.
Our Students Express the Meaning of Tzedakah
By Lisa-Joy Cohen In a continuing effort to encourage our children to be
active members of the community, Susan Greenberg organized a successful Tzedakah Food Project for her Tuesday and Thursday Hebrew School classes. On February 20, in the kitchen at Temple Emanuel, Mrs. Greenberg extended an invitation for her students to join together to prepare meals for the less fortunate in our area. Under the supervision of Lynne Snyder, the more than 25 fourth grade students participated in the planning and implementing of a nutritious menu for a food bank as well as contributing money for the needed ingredients.
When asked why they were willing to give up their usual activities to chop up onions, grate cheese or wash dishes, the students agreed it made them feel important to help others. Hillary Lutz said, "It makes me feel special to help others who don't have all the things that I do. I guess that is the true meaning of Tzedakah."
We are proud to have such special students at Temple Emanuel!
