tikkun olam and Jewish values – all are means for cultivating“spiritual fitness.” Would you consider yourself to bespiritually fit? Would you consider our congregation to be spiritually fit? Would you consider our society to be spiritually fit?

If the answer to any of these questions is “no” or “not yet,” then the appropriate response is not to belittle the conceptbut to see how it can be useful as a means for self-improvement. Our Temple can and should function as nothingless than a “Jewish Academy for Spiritual Fitness.”

Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi tells a story of when hebegan his career as a Chabad rabbi in New Haven, Connecticut. He started a little cheder (school for children) and had the chutzpah to call it a yeshiva. Of course, a yeshiva is like a graduate-level academy for Jewish studies; something much more advanced than a mere cheder. Consequently, some of the established rabbis in the area derided his efforts and complained to his superiors that he should not be allowed to call his school a yeshiva.

When a representative from Chabad eventually came to town, he responded to their complaints by saying: “Today gentlemen, I walked on George Street. And I saw on George Street there was a bus. And on the front of the bus, it said CHICAGO. I said ‘Ganef! Shaygetz! Ligner! (Thief! Vermin! Liar!) You’re in New Haven! Why does your sign say Chicago?’”

The rabbi paused, then added with a twinkle in his eye: “Ahh, but the bus is going to Chicago! And from this cheder, there is going to be a yeshiva!”

It is true that calling Temple Israel a “Jewish Academy for Spiritual Fitness” is audacious, but that’s basically what we are. It’s an idea that is entirely consistent with who and what we aspire to be. And putting it in these terms makes sense, even to those who would otherwise have no reason to join a synagogue.

Rabbi M. Thomas Heyn

RABBI’S MESSAGEA Jewish Academy for Spiritual Fitness?

I have an idea that some might call ‘audacious.’ That’s OK. I think it’s time.

Rabbi Rick Jacobs himself, President of the Union for Reform Judaism, used the word ‘audacious’ in his recent address at the URJ’s Biennial when he urged Reform congregations to practice ‘audacious hospitality.’ He said we can and should do much more to welcome newcomers into our community.

Benyamin Netanyahu used the same phrase in his address to participants at the Biennial. Via satellite, he described Israelas a place “where all Jews, including Reform Jews, experiencenothing less than ‘audacious hospitality’.” Netanyahu knew that the phrase had just been used repeatedly by RabbiJacobs, so he knew it was an idea Reform Jews were ready to hear.

Dr. Ron Wolfson, author of the recent book entitled Relational Judaism, also spoke at the Biennial and made use of the term. He explained that being ‘audacious’ with regard to hospitalityis not just about welcoming people at the door or sendingthem friendly letters. It’s about creating and multiplyingpersonal bonds between old and new members. It meansbeing willing to try something new.

So when it seemed that my idea was a bit audacious, Irealized it would be a good thing. It’s time for something new. It’s time to create and multiply personal bonds between Temple members, and my idea is likely to do just that.

My idea is to engage everyone in the work we have cometogether to do. That’s because we are here, as humanbeings on this planet, as members of a Jewish community and as members of Temple Israel, to cultivate what we might call “spiritual fitness.”

Much has already been said about the concept. Doing a quick search on the internet, one can find about a dozen books written over the past twenty years with “spiritual fitness” in the title. But the concept has never been used in a Jewish congregation. Yet, if you think about it, the term aptly defines our purpose.

Today, everyone knows what “physical fitness” is. Whether we choose to pursue it or not, we each have some notion of what the concept means. Hence, it’s not a stretch for us to consider the idea of “spiritual fitness.” What is it? And how we might cultivate it, both individually and collectively?

In a Jewish context, the practice of prayer, mussar, tzedakah, Continued on page 14

SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCESiri and the Breast-

Continued on page 14

This month we read Torahportions concerning the buildingof the Mishkan, the portable sanctuary in the desert, and the clothing of the High Priest – the turban, the ephod, and, especiallythe breastplate.

We often see representations of the breastplate on our Torah scrolls.

The breastplate is a grid of three columns by four. Each of the twelve elements is made of a semi-precious stone, perhaps with an inscription on each stone. The breastplate was worn by the High Priest when he entered the Holy ofHolies to confer with God on Yom Kippur.

This story begins with an archeologist who was playing with his iPhone, consulting Siri, plumbing the depth of her wisdom, learning her deepest capabilities.

He asked her the population of the United Kingdom. Sheanswered at once.

He asked her how to get to his favorite Cuban restaurant. She answered at once.

Then, he asked her, “How do I get to Jerusalem?”She said, “What part of Jerusalem?”

“To the Temple. To the Holy of Holies within the Temple.”

“That no longer exists,” Siri said. “But I could take you there at a time when it did exist.”

“Really?” the archeologist said. “I’d like that.”

“Turn around,” said Siri.

The archeologist turned around, and there he was, in ancient Jerusalem, in the Temple, just outside the Holy of Holies.

“What time is this?” he asked a nearby priest.

“You don’t know this is the afternoon of Yom Kippur?” the priest asked. “Any moment now, the Cohen ha-Gadol will be coming to enter the Holy of Holies?”

Just then the Cohen ha-Gadol, the High Priest, walkedforward in his full uniform – the turban, the ephod, and a jacket.

“Excuse me,” the archeologist said. “I’ve come a long way through space and time to be here, to see the breastplate. Could you show it to me? Could you describe how you use it to communicate with God?”

I just returned from spending four jam-packed days at the URJ Biennialincluding meetings, learning sessions, prayer, music and dancing, and a most beautiful Shabbat. Wow! It will take me a while to process this for sure. I was especially taken with the

camaraderie among all in the very full convention center. Strangers quickly became like family.

I think what struck me most was the deep experience ofintimate daily prayer in a room full of thousands of people. I found it so comfortable to pray in the midst of so many others feeling safe and joyful - so much so that there were many, many times when I just couldn’t stop crying. I was just touched so deeply by the presence of something so powerful and beautiful with my fellow Jews.

I was also inspired by the quality of learning sessions I was able to attend. I wished I could be at more of them, but it is indeed difficult to be at every single thing. I felt a responsibility toattend “administrative-type” workshops as Congregational President, and missed some of those that may have been more interesting personally. There were lots of NFTY kids in attendance which was terrific. You could really tell that these young folks were well positioned to take on leadership roles in the not-so-distant future.

I have been asked what the highlight of the conference was for me. Without a doubt, I enjoyed it all, but the Saturday morningShabbat service really took my breath away. The music, enriched by the presence of Dr. Alan Mason on piano, along with the superb cantor and choir, was just heavenly to me. I know that was such a one-time gift that I feel so fortunate to have received.

Some of the messages that stand out for me wereincorporated in the presentation by Rabbi Rick Jacobs. He encourages “audacious hospitality” throughout our local events, inclusion of all (including those with disabilities), youth engagement (especially in Tikkun Olam, NFTY and summer camps), social justice as core of Reform Judaism, and activities to embrace and support Israel as the homeland for the Jews. We were able to learn about some extraordinary social justiceactivities, we had a video presentation by Prime MinisterNetanyahu, a presentation by the Bar Mitzvah boy fromPortland who gave his D’var Torah on marriage equality, and some wonderful presentations by top notch rabbis andmusicians.

I would wholeheartedly encourage all to attend the nextBiennial which will be in our neck of the woods-Orlando- February, 2015.

Alan MasonDirector of Music and

Doctor of Musical Arts

I recently had the tremendousexperience and honor ofaccompanying Shabbat servicesat the Union for Reform Judaism National Biennial Convention in San Diego, California. There were 5,000 Reform Jews in attendance, packing the San Diego ConventionCenter, and services werebroadcast live on JLTV (Jewish Life TV), which also broadcast the 2013 Winter Jewish Music Concert last year.

What is Shabbat worship like at the URJ National Biennial? I have a great comparison: pretend it is Sunday morning, you are channel surfing on TV, you come across a huge Christian Crusade in a packed convention center, with great music on the stage, television cameras everywhere, dynamic service leaders, a 200 voiced choir, and a charismatic congregation fully engaged. Now in your mind make it Jewish, and that is what Shabbat worship is like at the URJ National Biennial.

The service leaders I played for are probably the two most significant Jewish clergy in the United States at this time: Rabbi-Cantor Angela Warnick Buchdahl, Senior Rabbidesignate of Central Synagogue in Manhattan, who currently serves the congregation as Senior Cantor, and Rabbi RickJacobs, President of the Union for Reform Judaism. Rabbi-Cantor Buchdahl is the first ever Asian to be ordained, and her newest appointment as Senior Rabbi designate ofCentral Synagogue in Manhattan has been publicized around the world.

The 2015 National Biennial Convention is taking place November 4-8 in Orlando, Florida, and I know many of us will take advantage of the close proximity and attend. It is a great way to meet 5,000 Reform Jews from across the country, and experience the newest and best offerings of the Union for Reform Judaism.

Education and Youth.........................................................................................................................................................................................

...........................................................................................................................................................................................

Religious School NewsOur 3rd and 4th grade classes discussed the concept of tikkun olam (repairing the world). They were asked: What does it mean to you, and why is it important? Should we donate money to Israel? Should we feed the homeless in Miami? Here are some of the amazing answers some of Wendy Saltzburg’s and Harriett Bulbin’s students came up with:

LAUREN HELLER:“I think it is important to help others because not all people are able to help themselves like us. It is important also because it is always good to give charity to other people, even if you don’t know them.”

JORDYN BUSHMAN“I think it is important because others may not have food, water or shelter to keep them safe. It also is important to help others because they don’t have to pay you back; you do it out of niceness.”

AMELIE CHASKES“It is important for us Jewish people to help others because you would not like it if you had to live in a box on the streets or if you only ate once a week. Why let people feel bad about themselves when you can help them feel good about themselves for once.”

ANDREW ARVIN“So the world will be a better place.”

BROOKE BELLINSON “We are just a little part of a very big world. We need to do what we can to make our little part matter. I have done several charity events over the last year including raising money for a dog rescue charity, bike riding for cancer and jump roping for heart disease. I also really enjoyed the tzedakah boxes that we used to raise money for trees in Israel. Our family tries to recycle and not use too much electricity and water.”

“It is very sad that the people in Israel have to be so cold especially those who don’t have the right clothes and warm homes.”

If this does not show you the true ruach of what we are instillingduring our teaching time, I am not sure what does! What greatanswers! We are beyond blessed to have a school that reinforces such great values and concepts for all of the world. Thank you Wendy Saltzburg and Harriett Bulbin!

We also had a fantastic program led by Rabbi Mitch called the “Beanbag of the Law” where we learned about the passing down of the Torah and its teachings generation by generation. A huge success!

We would like to thank the Ellenby family for allowing us to celebrate Tu BiSh’vat at their farms. Our Tu BiSh’vat Seder held at Ellenby Farms was incredible! We are so thankful to have been able to be one with nature celebrating the trees and all of G-d’s creations.

We thank you for your support, and as always, Donna and I are always available to each and every one of you and your children for anything throughout the year.

-Deborah Sherman Gorelick

Hello, I’m Jennifer Benrey, the new music teacher forTemple Israel’s incredible Sunday school. What an honor it is to teach the youth and future of Temple Israel! Music is such an integral part of my connection to Judaism, and my goal is to create that same sort of spiritual connection wrought from our rich musical tradition for our children. Here at Sunday school, we begin every week with tefillah, bringing together both parents and children to worship. Every week in tefillah, a different age group is featured and helps to lead. The children and I have been working on many traditional Jewish songs as well as modern settings of prayers. In music class, I am teaching age-appropriatemusic to the kids and relating what I teach them to the weekly torah portion and to Jewish holidays. The kids are responding so well to music and I am so thrilled. I know that I’m beginning to make an impact when I get requests from kids to sing their favorite Jewish songs that they have learned.

The kids have also been singing in our family Shabbats which I have had the privilege of leading as the cantorialsoloist. It is so important for our youth to be exposed to services and to be brought into the sanctuary. Thestudents have led the Shema and sung various other songs with fervor. If you have been to services, you might have noticed that these charismatic kids particularly enjoy singing into the microphone as well. Ultimately it is our goal at the Sunday school to make the students feel at home at Temple Israel. I want all of the kids to find their voice in both a meaningful and spiritual way. I couldn’t be prouder of the students for their hard work and accomplishments, and I hope that music can continue to flourish at Temple Israel. Please look out for upcoming Family Shabbats and help spread the word about this wonderful program that Temple Israel offers for our Jewish youth!

SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCEHe opened his jacket, and there was the breastplate, three columns of four, each element glistening with a semi-precious stone. Inscribed on the stones were specialsymbols. In the first column at the top, something that looked like the number 1. Underneath it, 4. Then, 7. And finally a six pointed star, not the Magen David, just three lines with six points. The second column had what looked like a 2 at the top. Then 5. Then 8. Then 0. The third, a 3 at the top. Then 6. Then 9. And then, the pound sign.

“I know this,” the archeologist said. “I’ve seen it before.”

“Of course,” said the High Priest. “Everyone knows it. The trick is how to use it.”

“How do you use it?”

“Well, I go into the Holy of Holies. There’s a strong wireless connection there. I dial 9-1-1 and I have a direct connection with God. I share with Him all the concerns of the world.”

“Wow, it’s that simple.”

“Not that simple. The connection is available only through me, at this place, at this time.”

“How does God answer?”

“God is always answering. God’s answer is for every person, and each answer for each person is unique.”

“How do I hear the answer?”

“Do you have a phone?” The archeologist displayed his phone.

“Does it have the image of a breastplate on it?” Thearcheologist showed the High Priest the dial pad.

“It’s this simple,” the High Priest said. “Whenever you get a call, it’s from God. It may sound like someone else, but it’s God speaking to you in that voice. Your challenge is to hear the Divine in what’s being said to you.

“Now, if you don’t mind, the time has come for me to go into the Holy of Holies. Let the angel Siri-el take you back to your place and time. Share the secret of the breastplate. The holy way of sharing is to send this story to 20 people, and have them send it to 20 people.”

© Mitchell Chefitz, with permission to share with 20 people.

For the coming year, our Temple will host a series of lecturesand programs around this theme. I believe it will expand and deepen our sense of purpose, both individually andcollectively. I hope you will help me to develop this audacious idea and see if it has the power to enrich your life and our congregation.

May God’s name be exalted and hallowed throughout the world that He created, as is God’s wish.May God’s sovereignty soon be accepted, during our life and the life of all Israel. And let us say: Amen.

May God’s great name be praised throughout all time. Glorified and celebrated, lauded and worshiped, exalted and honored, extolled and acclaimed may the Holy One be, praised beyond all song and psalm, beyond all tributes that mortals can utter.

And let us say: Amen.Let there be abundant peace from heaven, with life’s goodness for us and for all Israel. And let us say: Amen.

May the One who brings peace to His universe bring peace to us and to all Israel. And let us say: Amen.Zichrona L’vracha, May their memory be for a blessing.
