BETWEEN YOU AND MEM’shaneh makom, m’shaneh mazal.

If you change your place, you change your luck.~a loose translation of a Hebrew proverb

When we go somewhere for the first time, whether a class or a service or a waiting room or a meeting, we look around and select a place to sit. We don’t mean to formalize it for all time, but often that’s what happens. When we go back to that location the next time, we often sit in the same spot. We are creatures

of habit, and we like to establish routines. We sometimes go months or years repeating the same patterns without any specific intention or thought. Have you ever decided to (or been forced to) sit in an entirely different spot in the room on one of those return visits? Have you noticed how many new things you see and experience? New people, new artwork and surroundings, a different energy – all of that emerges naturally from a new seat. The world looks really different when you sit in a different place. Of course, the saying is intended, I believe, to address more than where we plant ourselves in a room. It applies to life. When routine turns into grind, change is what we need. It doesn’t have to be huge change, but stepping outside of established patterns is often the best medicine, and it can help us recapture gratitude and joy in the routine. The summer is, for many of us, a time of change, of breaking normal schedules, of rethinking our lives and coming up with new ways of looking at things or doing things. For our children, it’s a break from school and a chance to have different kinds of learning experiences outside the classroom. For adults, it can be a time to breathe and reboot, maybe take a vacation, enjoy times of day we don’t usually get a chance to see because of the late sunset, or simply take a dip in a pool. Those unique feelings reenergize us. Change in these instances is not scary. It’s a welcome new dynamic in our lives that helps us plug in more successfully to our established routines and priorities. This summer at Temple Israel is full of this kind of change. We are so excited to welcome to our team Abbie and Rabbi Feivel Strauss in June and Rabbi Bess Wohlner in July. These individuals share deep-seated values, experiences, and vision with Temple Israel. And they also will bring a fresh perspective and energy to our place. The Hebrew proverb reminds us that change can be a friend, supporting us as we shape our future.L’Shalom,Rabbi Katie Bauman

TEAM READIn learning you will teach,

and in teaching you will learn. ~Phil CollinsWith Betsy Saslawsky leading the way, Temple Israel launched Team Read, an exciting, new, and ambitious initiative designed to help address illiteracy in Memphis. Using a proven, step-by-step curriculum, 39 volunteer coaches (including substitute coaches) from Temple Israel taught sight words (also known as Fry words) to second-graders at Wells Station Elementary School, Temple’s Adopt-A-School. One hour each week, Temple coaches met with two children in 30-minute individual sessions. Students and coaches benefitted greatly from the program. “The enthusiasm the students and volunteer coaches had when working on literacy skills was infectious!” Betsy said. “Throughout the academic year our students gained important reading skills and academic confidence, and our coaches received the best return of all – the knowledge that they made a positive difference in their students’ lives. We already are planning for the 2015-2016 school year and welcome new volunteers to join this meaningful program.” Temple coaches during the inaugural year of Team Read included Stacey Alpert, Sharon Berman, Irma Binder, Mary Blair, Marcy Blen, Francine Brown, Stacy Canales, Jeanne Danziger, Jane Eckstein, Louise Ellis, Cindy Finestone, Elaine Fox, Janet Freeman, Sheila Hahn, Stacy Hutt, Phyllis Kaplan, Cathy Kessler, Richard Kessler, Judy Korones, Leslie Landau, Debbie Lazarov, Penny Lewis, Betsy Libby, Carolyn Mizne, Phyllis Niegelberg, Barbara Ostrow, Shelly Pierce, Gerri Provus, Jan Reisman, Janice Ringel, Judy Ringel, Judy Royal, Paul Royal, Betsy Saslawsky, Mildred Schwartz, Nancy Sissman, Vickie Starr, Lynn Susser, and Patti Weiss.

Measures of success of this year’s program include:54 students went through the program.Last fall before coaching began, 37% of the students were reading above the 200 Fry word level (grade level is considered to be words at the 101-200 level). This spring after coaching, 91% of the students were reading above the 200 Fry word level. We logged 948 coaching sessions with every student receiving an average of 16.3 sessions. The average increase was 314 words. Without Team Read, students typically would gain only 100 words in an academic year.6 of our students post-tested at 900 or above (there are a total of 1,000 words).

To sign up to be a Team Read coach during the 2015-2016 school year or for more information, please contact Betsy Saslawsky, 901.682.1238 or [email protected]. Team Read is made possible by the generosity and vision of Judy and Nick Ringel, their children, and grandchildren in memory of Ernestine Greenberger.

I believe that our children should love coming to Temple and to religious school. While many in previous generations may remember “suffering” through Hebrew school on Sunday mornings and weekday afternoons, I hope our current students do not have the same

experience. When our students feel comfortable, happy, and a sense of belonging at Temple, they are much more eager to learn and to remain engaged with Jewish life.

To ensure that we give our students the most positive Jewish experience possible, the Wendy and Avron Fogelman Religious School is constantly growing and changing. While our teachers and education team regularly evaluate our programs, the most helpful feedback comes from each of you.

For the past few months, I have met with many of our religious school families, either one-on-one or in small groups. We have talked about your ideas for making religious school even better and your hopes for your children’s Jewish learning. Each conversation has taught me something, and I have learned that while every family is unique, there are some common thoughts and ideas that most of our Temple families share:

We want our children to feel connected to their Temple community. Whether our children have been coming to Temple since preschool or moved to Memphis last year, we want our kids to have a relationship with other Jewish people their age. We want our children to feel connected with the greater Jewish community. It is important that our kids know and understand Jewish stories, traditions, prayers, and basic Hebrew so they can participate in Jewish life wherever they go.We want our children to engage in active, relevant Jewish learning. Our kids love hands-on activities and opportunities to make a difference in their community. We want to know what our children are doing and learning in religious school. Communication from teachers to parents is very important so we can continue these Jewish conversations at home.We want to celebrate Shabbat as a family. While Friday nights may be busy, they are a “Jewish time,” and we love coming together with other families to celebrate.

As we plan for next year, we will consider all of the ideas that you have shared – both big and small. Your feedback helps to make education at Temple even more powerful, enjoyable, and meaningful, so please stop by any time to share your thoughts. I look forward to even more learning and growing together in the year to come.

The time to register your child for summer enrichment activities has arrived!

The summer sessions at our nationally accredited and beloved preschool will be wonderful. Children enjoy getting wet and messy, and incorporating these types of active learning experiences into the classroom means children are highly engaged and have an opportunity to explore their world.

This summer, the children in our Noah’s Ark Toddler program will participate in a variety of hands-on and active learning activities including water-play, and music and movement with Ms. Kathlyn, and music with our new Music Director, Abbie Strauss.

For our preschool-age children, ages three to rising first graders, the teachers are proud to debut a winning collection of brand new camps. Also included in the summer curriculum will be water-play, music and movement, and music and Hebrew.

Check out these awesome weekly sessions:June 1-5: Wacky Water WeekJune 8-12: Amazing ArtistsJune 15-19: Summer S.T.E.M.June 22-26: Dancing With The PreschoolJune 29-July 2: Top Chef CookingJuly 6-10: A Trip to IsraelJuly 13-17: Weird ScienceJuly 20-24: Truly TropicalJuly 28-31: Sports and Games

We believe that you will find our summer program to be specifically designed to offer your child a full range of activities which cater to his or her own personal interests. The Barbara K. Lipman Early Learning Center Summer Program welcomes current, new, and prospective students, as well as guests. We look forward to spending the summer with you! “When God finished creating the world after those six days, He left a lot of unfinished business…you and I have the power to do God’s Unfinished Business.”Those inspiring thoughts from Temple Israel’s own Rabbi Harry Danziger are as true and meaningful today as they were in 1983 when he first spoke them. Over

the years, this notion of helping to do God’s Unfinished Business has grown from a noble concept to a wide range of services provided by volunteers.Today, when we refer to God’s Unfinished Business, sometimes affectionately referred to as GUB, we are talking about ways we all can help others by performing acts of loving kindness, or loving deeds. You will see the following quote from Ethics of the Fathers as you leave the everyday entrance to Temple Israel: “The world depends on three things: on Torah, worship and loving deeds.”We are commanded to help others, and we have a great opportunity to do so with GUB. There are a number of different ways you can help, and you do not need any formal training. All you need is to realize that your acts of loving kindness will make a difference to those you help. By getting involved with GUB, we not only are fulfilling one of the three pillars of meaningful life by performing acts of loving deeds, but we also are showing what we mean when we say that we are a “warm and welcoming congregational family.”

COMPANIONSHIPFor those who have little or no family in Memphis and are lonely or are homebound, a visit from a caring Temple member is appreciated. Upon request, volunteers also visit those in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

CONDOLENCE PHONE CALLSWhen there is a death in the family, support from someone who has faced a loss may be consoling. Calls are made throughout the first year after their loss, if the need arises. Through this, the mitzvah of nichum avelim (comforting mourners) is fulfilled.

HOSPITAL LUNCHESVolunteers prepare a buffet five times each year for family members of ICU patients. By doing so, members of Temple Israel help nourish the spirit and body of those in need.

MEALS FOR THE SICKAfter GUB is notified, volunteers will prepare and deliver meals to Temple members who are ill or just home from the hospital. These meals follow Biblical tradition. The visit from the volunteer is often as important as the meal itself.

MIFA MEALSMembers of Temple Israel deliver meals five days a week, year round, as part of the MIFA Meals program.

MOVING ON...LIFE AFTER LOSSSharing emotions after the death of a loved one is an important part of the grieving process. This is done in a confidential and supportive group led by licensed health care professionals.

PHONE CALLSWhen GUB is informed, our volunteers call congregants upon discharge from a hospital stay. We offer moral support, rides to medical appointments, and meals. Having a caring and engaging conversation with those in need is a meaningful way to help.

TRANSPORTATIONWhen someone is unable to drive, basic errands become impossible. Volunteers help by providing transportation to places such as the doctor’s office or the pharmacy.

If you need a service provided by God’s Unfinished Business or know someone who does, please call Nadine King, GUB Volunteer Coordinator, 901.763.0940.

If you would like to help provide the services GUB offers, please fill out this form and return it to:Temple Israel, Attn: God’s Unfinished Business, 1376 East Massey Road, Memphis, TN 38120-3299.

NEW CCAR PRESIDENT GREW UP AT TEMPLE ISRAELIn March, Rabbi Denise Eger was named the President of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. Rabbi Eger is a cherished alumna of Temple Israel’s Confirmation and High School Graduation class, and was a leader in MeFTY, a camp counselor at Jacobs Camp, and a childhood friend of many current Temple members.Rabbi Harry Danziger, who attended her installation and was Denise’s childhood rabbi, recalled an anecdote from her youth.“In those days, we had very formal Confirmation services — organ, choir, the works,” he said. “Her classmates came to me and asked, ‘Could Denise play the guitar and sing something at our Confirmation?’ So she was a groundbreaker then as she is today.”Rabbi Eger called Rabbi Danziger an “extraordinary role model in the rabbinate.”

“We moved to Memphis when I was young, and we joined Temple Israel,” said Rabbi Eger. “We regularly attended Shabbat services, and the Temple became the center of my life.” Rabbi Danziger served as President of the CCAR from 2005-2007, and now another rabbi from Memphis, Rabbi Eger, succeeds him some 10 years later!
