RABBI’S REFLECTIONS
T”u Bishvat and Blessing
T”u Bishvat is the fifteenth
day of the Hebrew month of
Shevat. In Hebrew, letters
also are numbers, so T”u,
tet, vav, is 9+6. We do not
use 10+5 since the Hebrew
letters yod and he together
form one of God's names.
In Leviticus 19:23-25, we
may not eat fruit from trees until the fifth year. We
may not use the fruit for the first three years. We
dedicate the fourth's year harvest to God. In the Tal-
mud Rosh Ha-Shanah 1:1, we calculate a tree's age
on the fifteenth of Shevat. Since all produce belongs
to God, only after we acknowledge God may we use
it.
A story: All sorts of bad things befall a man in a
short period of time. With nothing left, the desperate
man leaves town. Tired and hungry, he sees a tree by
the roadside, eats some fruit without blessing, and
Rabbi Michael Rascoe

(Rabbi—continued from page 1)
sleeps. He hears a voice calling, “Robber!
Robber!” He looks around, seeing nothing,
and falls back asleep. After two more
times, he realizes that the tree is calling him
a robber for taking its fruit and not thanking
God.
The Talmud, Ta'anit 5b-6a, has another sto-
ry about a tree and blessing. Rav Nahman
asked Rabbi Yitshaq to bless him. Rabbi
Yitshaq replies with a parable. A hungry,
tired and thirsty man traveling in the desert
comes on a tree with fruit and shade by a
stream. He eats, drinks, and sleeps. When
he awakens, he says, “O Tree, how shall I
bless you? If I say, 'May your fruit be
sweet, your shade pleasant, and you be by a
nice stream, all of this exists,' so I will say,
'May it be God's will that all the shoots tak-
en from you shall be like you.'” Rabbi Yit-
shaq blessed Rav Nahman similarly. Since
Rav Nahman had learning, riches, and chil-
dren, Rabbi Yitshaq blessed Rav Nahman,
“May it be God's will that your offspring be
like you.”
The stories about trees and blessing raise
some ideas. We should thank God for our
blessings no matter our straits. Riches are
not life’s only, or best, blessing; so are
learning and children. We do not wish for
what is, or to change reality, for it already
exists. We wish for a foreseeable, realistic
future. Then we help make this future hap-
pen, for wishing is not sufficient.
The final points I wish to make concern
continuity. Some say we live for ourselves,
and, maybe, our children. The first story
points out that without God, and someone
to plant, the future would not happen. The
second story teaches that continuity requires
children and grandchildren like us, living
with and committed to the values we hold
and imbue in them.
T”u Bishvat is a minor holiday, meaning we
can work on January 25, 2016. We do not
say tahanun, supplicatory prayers. We eat
traditional Israeli produce (wheat, barley,
grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and
dates, mentioned in Deuteronomy 8:8,) and
many add modern Israeli produce like or-
anges, from Israel when possible. Courtesy
of the qabbalists, some make a seder of it. A
new custom is to plant trees in Israel
(Zionism and ecology are important val-
ues.) Though a “minor” holiday, T”u Bish-
vat's ideas are major. Have a happy Jewish
Arbor Day.

Kol Nidre Appeal 5776
We continue to need our membership and friends to preserve the health and well-being
of our beloved temple. It is a tradition in congregations to estab-
lish a Kol Nidre Appeal Fund; at Temple Israel this fund is vital to
help supplement the dues and thus cover our operating expenses.
Therefore, we ask each one of you, if you have not already donat-
ed, to be as generous as possible, in order that our temple may
continue to meet the growing needs of the Jewish community.
Please forward your check, payable to Temple Israel Kol Nidre Fund, to: Temple Israel
of Riverhead, P.O. Box 1531, Riverhead, NY 11901. You can also pay online using
PayPal.
