Dec. 2017 & Jan 2018 Kislev/Tevet/Sh’vat 5778 Vol. 165, Number 7 and 8 Dec. 2017 & Jan 2018 Kislev/Tevet/Sh’vat 5778 I write this as we and families throughout the country prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for gathering with friends and family to partake in the blessings for which we have been so fortunate to share. And of course, we should never forget those that are less fortunate than we and do whatever we can to help those in need. This past Sunday was the annual joint Thanksgiving service with First United and the Church of the Ascension. For the first time, the service was held on Sunday afternoon and I was very pleased with the attendance. The reception was beautiful as always and I would especially like to thank Aimee Harris and her committee for everything they did to make this service so special. Chanukah is just around the corner and I have the privilege of telling the Chanukah story to about 60 first graders from Montgomery Academy on Wednesday November 29 th . Also, we will have our annual Chanukah service and dinner on Friday December 15 th . Services will be led by Turia Stark Williams and reservations will be required. It would be wonderful to have an outstanding turnout for this service and I encourage you all to make an effort in being there. I do want to keep you aware of the efforts of the Rabbi Search Committee chaired by Diane Weil and Charlotte Mussafer. We have received 6 resumes to date, equally split between men and women and a variety of ages. We have conducted two Skype interviews and will be having two others in late November. This process is a very deliberate one and takes a great deal of time so I do ask you to be as patient as possible, knowing that the committee is diligently working toward bringing the best rabbi possible to Beth Or. Last, I want to share with you that our wonderful music coordinator and cantorial soloist Turia Stark Williams will celebrate her Bat Mitzvah on Saturday January 6 th . This will be a beautiful occasion and I hope that you can all attend. And since we have decided to have bulletins every other month, I will close with good wishes for a happy and healthy new year. I cannot begin to properly express how much your support during these difficult months has meant to me. And as I often do, I hope that you will make attending services a part of your weekly plans. Your friends and family are stepping up to lead the congregation in worship and prayer and it would be meaningful to see you all in Temple. NEEDED: Volunteers to be bimah guests. If you would like to or are willing to be a bimah guest for a Shabbat service please call or email Diane Weil

([email protected] or 279-6211).

There is NO speaking involved!

BEDTIME BUNDLES For the 10th year we will be collecting bedtime items for Child Protect during November and December. Please put your purchases which must be new and unused in the playpen in the Temple lobby beginning in early November.

After coming to Child Protect because they were abused or molested,

these boys and girls go into foster care, often with nothing to call their own, according to Director Jannah Bailey. Please be generous for these unfortunate children, who are mostly ages 6-12.

Items wanted are pajamas, pillow cases, socks, underwear, bedtime stories, journals and writing implements, sketchbooks and coloring pencils or crayons, toothpaste and toothbrushes, washcloths, fleece throws, slippers, dolls and toys, combs/brushes/hair ornaments, and anything else you can think of.

If you don't want to shop or are unable to do so, please send a check to the temple office earmarked "for bedtime bundles" and we will be glad to shop for you! Thank you!

SISTERHOOD Our Joint Thanksgiving Service with First United Methodist Church and the Church of Ascension was held Sunday, November 19th and was wonderful! Aimee Harris, Lynne Ginsburg, Marlene Beringer and Peggy Mussafer did a spectacular job with an array of food, tablescapes and Bimah flowers. Many thanks to all who helped with this annual function.

We look forward to an equally wonderful and fun Chanukah experience, chaired by Jenny Ives and Karen Lieberman on Friday, December 15th. We hope all will come and share in this Festival of Lights celebration.

Sisterhood will be hosting the

Sisterhood Shabbat Service on Friday, January 26th. Turia Williams has been planning the music for this event for months. It will be something you will not want to miss. Our guest speaker will be Janna Bailey from Child Protect. Please plan to join us on this special evening.

As we move into January, we will begin thinking about new Sisterhood Officers. It’s hard to believe that my 2 years are almost over. I have had incredible help and support from my board, our membership, Marlon and Gina! I hope you will consider taking a leadership role in Sisterhood. Sisterhood provides a great deal to the Temple and we want this tradition to continue.

Susan Finklestein Sisterhood President

SOCIAL CONCERNS

Thank you everyone who participated in the High Holiday Food Drive/Fund Drive. We raised $1,500 for the Montgomery Area Food Bank! MAFB provides vital services to our area, and so I was thrilled that our participation exceeded last year's drive. THANK YOU!

In the past few months, Social Concerns has sent funds to help with relief after Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Our current project, headed by Louisa Weinrib, is the collection set up in the Temple lobby for Bedtime Bundles. This is a collection for the agency Child Protect, which is dedicated to helping child abuse victims throughout Montgomery and the River Region. We will be collecting items throughout December. You can read more about what items are needed on page 2.

TBO Annual Food Festival February 25, 2018

February 25th seems like a long way off but Food Festival preparations are just around the corner. Soon the baking committees will begin scheduling their cooking dates for January and February.

We very much need help during morning hours during the week of February 20 -24. If you are available during those times, please let us know. Because Steve Schloss begins working on ordering and picking up supplies well before the food festival, he also needs help on some specific dates prior to the week of the 20th. Please email him at [email protected] or call him at 281-8354.

The Treasure and Collectible Market is collecting items now! We are looking for “gently loved” treasures that we might sell. You may drop off at the Temple any Tuesday – Friday. Marlon will gladly help you unload at the Temple.

Please contact me at 546-2521 or email [email protected] or Karen Goldstein at 265-1145 or [email protected] to volunteer.

When scheduling calendar events involving the Temple it is

important that you check dates with the Federation and the Temple for potential conflicts within the Jewish community. Their number is 277-5820, and you can view the community calendar at www.jewishmontgomery.org.

NEED HELP GETTING AROUND

DURING SERVICES? A wheelchair and walker are stored in the coat closet and

are available to members and guests during Temple events.

If you have accumulated unused Temple Beth Or

donation envelopes please feel free to drop them off at the Temple office so they may be

reused.

We would like to know. Please call the temple office when a family member is in the hospital or ailing. Too often we find out about illnesses, crises and hospitalizations long after they occur. This is a missed opportunity for the calls and visits the rabbi would like to share. Please let the temple know if there is a

concern in your family or another congregation family (with their permission). We need your help in order to offer ours.
