Synoptic assessment sat May 2021

Synoptic essay based on all 8 units

All content covered across both years of the course

A01, AO2, AO3

Assessments which will be given greater weighting:

December PPE examinations, based on Unit 1-4 and unit 5 and 7 content.

Units 1-4 and Unit 5-7 sat as two papers in December as a mock exam.

Material taught during Year 12 and Term 1 of Y13.

A01, AO2, AO3

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

Chosen assessments (except for Dec 2020 mock paper) used AQA November 2020 assessment

materials which are secure and assess the full breadth of the course taught and assessment

objectives. However, 7402/1 Q4 was not included as we have not done this practical, 7402/2 Q4.2

and 4.3 and Q8.1 and 8.4 were omitted as these topics had not been studied. Otherwise, the use

of AQA papers in full from last year’s exam series provided validity and robustness on the content

taught, all of which was taught in school or as live lessons during the national lockdowns. All

assessments were done under high control conditions.

Assessments which have already taken place

Unit 1 Internal Assessment Sept – March 2020 Learning Aim A completed prior to LD1. Centre Assessed Grade Claimed for this Unit in Aug 2020 based on expected outcomes from evidence of completed Learning Aim

Unit 2 External Assessment Sept – March 2020 This was an external unit that was due to be sat in June 2020. Content being delivered up to LD1. Exam board allocated grade in August 2020

Unit 3 External Assessment Sept 20 – January 21 External Exam – sat by all students in January. Externally marked by Pearson.

2

Grades awarded March 2021.

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

The Extended Certificate is made up of 4 units – 2 internally assessed and 2 externally assessed. Students must sit all of these unit to achieve their certification.

Students had two units (Unit 1&2) claimed as Centre Assessed Grades in 2020 following Lockdown One. They had completed one full learning aim of Unit 1 and were given predicted grades for the exam unit.

Students then completed the external exam unit 3 for year 2 in January 2021 and the internal coursework unit 8 by May 2021.

Where students were isolating, they were able to join the lessons via Teams and were given appropriate extensions for any coursework.

Assessments which will be given lesser weighting: Assessment 3: Paper 2 Assessment taken 13/5/21

Paper 1 from summer 2018

Sept 2019 to March 2021

AO1, AO2, AO3

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

This Computer Science group are taking the course as an addition subject in period 6 lessons. Initially in year 10 they had one lesson a fortnight which increased to one a week in year 11.

The GCSE is made up of 2 papers which are normally taken at the end of year 11. No assessment was taken in year 10.

Students had completed most of the content for paper 1 by the time of the PPE in November of 2020. The paper they were given was the full 2018 paper 1 with the exception of a couple of questions that had not yet been covered.

During lockdown most of the remaining theory was covered. The main exception was some aspects of programming including use of lists, text files and SQL. In addition testing was only lightly addressed.

The two additional assessments covered all aspects of papers 1 and 2 with exception of the topics not covered.

Assessments Component 3: create a Media Product in Response to a Brief

This is an exam in which student develop a media product in response to a brief.

Students were introduced to the limited version of this assessment in the week before the assessment took place. They had covered the content while completing components 2a and 2b from September 2020 to April 2021.

Students will sit all assessments.

• 27/4• 29/4• 30/4

They were asked to complete the following parts of the assessment. Activity 1 – Ideas Log Activity 2 – Planning Material (1 document only)

Coursework Component 2: Developing Digital Media Production Skills

2a Students develop skills in designing and making a media product 2b Students repurpose an existing media product for s different audience 2c Students evaluate their product

Component 2a was started in September 2020 and worked on until the end of November, it remains incomplete. Component 2b was started in November in PPE week and is still on going. Component 2c has not been started

Most of 2a with exception for the final development of the product. Most of 2b the final product will be partly developed.

Coursework which has been claimed: Component 1: Exploring Media products

Internal Assessment September 2019-April 2020

All and unit banked with exam board in August 2020

7

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

This BTEC is assessed via three components. All students complete all three components.

Students banked component 1 in 2019-20. They completed this internally assessed coursework unit and were awarded a teacher assessed grade.

Component 2 is an internally assessed unit that was started in September 2020 and remains in complete now. I have agreed with the external verifier that he will provide feedback on a sample of Learning outcome 2 for this component. This is also incomplete but does provide evidence for all of the assignment objectives.

Component 3 is an externally marked exam that would be completed under controlled conditions in class time. To provide a sample of this work students will complete the first task and part of the second over 3 lessons during 1 week.

Subject: BTEC Tech Award in Performing arts (Drama)

Assessment type Assessment description

Approximate dates in which the content was

covered during the course

Assessment objectives covered.

Assessments: Component 3 – Responding to a Brief (40%)

This was originally an external assessment. As these are now not taking place, we are focusing on completing a more condensed version of the content and skills needed. The assessment consists of an ideas log, a skill log, a final performance and an evaluation.

This was covered from September 2020 – students learnt the skills needed and focused on initial planning. Since returning to school in March 2021, we are in the process of completing a condensed version of this component.

AO1 Understand how to respond to a brief AO2 Select and develop skills and techniques in response to a brief AO3 Apply skills and techniques in a workshop performance in response to a brief AO4 Evaluate the development process and outcome in response to a brief

Assessments which have already taken place:

Component 1 - Exploring the performing arts (30%)

Internal Assessment October 2019-March 2020

Learning Aim A - Examine professional practitioners’ performance work Learning Aim B was not finalised – Centre assessed grade based on evidence completed so far and what was thought they would achieve if it was a final product.

12

Component 2 - Developing Skills and Techniques in the Performing Arts (30%)

Internal Assessment Not covered – Centre Assessed Grade given.

Not covered. However, a centre assessed grade has been awarded for this looking at other evidence that support the learning aims. For example, for Learning Aim A students are asked to Develop skills and techniques for performance. Lesson workshops and previous written work that students have produced supports this criteria.

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

The BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts (Drama) is made up of 3 components. All students take the same units as each other across this course and these are all core components set by the exam board.

Students had 2 components banked from 2019-20. Both of these were internal units. Component 1 had been started and some evidence was produced – the centre assessed grade for this component was based on the evidence that had been produced so far and what the students would have achieved if the component was complete. Component 2 was due to be complete between April and July 2020. We were not in school at all during this time and therefore, a centre assessed grade was given based on various aspects such as previous evidence produced, workshops and performances.

When we returned to school in March, students have focused on the final component. This was originally the externally assessed unit. However, due to this being cancelled, the exam board have advised to still teach the skills and techniques needed for this component. This allows students to cover more learning aims and therefore, their teacher assessed grade to be robust.

Where students were isolating, work has been set and time has been allowed for students to take assessments when they returned to school so that they were not at any disadvantage.

14

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

Assessments all draw on AQA papers. December PPE used November 2020 papers, modified to account for fact the ‘The Kite Runner’ had not yet been taught. Instead students made use of chosen text in both Sections B and C. The remaining assessments make use of the assessment materials provided by AQA. All AOs are covered in each of the tasks undertaken and the quantity ensures the robustness of grade. All assessments (except NEA) were completed under high control conditions.

AO1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

Assessments all draw on AQA papers. December PPE used all November 2020 papers which were the most recent available online, secure and unseen. Where AQA questions had been used as a teaching resource, a comparable question was created. Paper 1 assessments use AQA papers. Paper 2 assessments follow the same format and wording as AQA papers. These assessments assess the full breadth of the taught specification. The range of questions ensure the range of content taught for Paper 2 is assessed. The choices provide validity to each assessment and for the assessment portfolio as a whole. All assessments (except NEA) were completed under high control conditions. NEA topics were chosen by students to suit their individual areas of interest and expertise.

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

Assessments all draw on Edexcel papers. December PPE was the Paper 1 issued by the exam board in November 2020. Paper 2 was again the November 2020 paper (Theme D) has been omitted from assessment as National Lockdown prevented it from being taught in full and assessment would have been unfair. The choices provide validity to each assessment and for the assessment portfolio as a whole. Students completed extensive work in their exercise books which will be used as evidence to support their PPE’s. A01 1,2,4,5,6

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

Assessments all draw on AQA papers. December PPE was the Paper 1 issued by the exam board in November 2019, with the exclusion of question 3 as we had not covered it sufficiently at that stage and to assess students using it would have been unfair. The exam uses the most recent AQA published exam - November 2020. Paper 2 (A03) has been omitted from assessment as National Lockdown prevented it from being taught in full and assessment would have been unfair. The choices provide validity to each assessment and for the assessment portfolio as a whole. All assessments were done under high control conditions and all assessments were marked and moderated in-faculty.

These assessments assess the full breadth of the specification and cover all Assessment Objectives. This provides validity to each assessment and for the assessment portfolio as a whole. All assessments were done under high control conditions, excluding the ‘substantial pieces of classwork and homework’. All assessments were marked on moderated in-faculty.

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

Assessments all draw on AQA papers. December PPE used the published ‘compulsory’ paper re-structured to support the change in specification (removal of 19th century novel) for this year only. The remaining assessments were selected from AQA assessment materials. These assessments assess the full breadth of the specification and cover all Assessment Objectives. This provides validity to each assessment and for the assessment portfolio as a whole. All assessments were done under high control conditions. Assessments in Summer complement December PPE; each assessment covers a different aspect of the course and we have maintained a broad and balanced offer.

Assessments which have already taken place

Component 1 Internal Assessment Sept – March 2020 Learning Aim A completed prior to LD1. Centre Assessed Grade Claimed for this Unit in Aug 2020 based on expected outcomes from evidence of completed Learning Aim

Component 3 External Assessment Jan – March 2020 This was an external unit that was due to be sat in June 2020. Content being delivered up to LD1. Exam board allocated grade in August 2020

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

24

The Tech Award is made up of 3 Components – 2 internally assessed and 1 externally assessed. Students must sit all of these unit to achieve their certification.

Students had two units (Component 1 & 3 ) claimed as Centre Assessed Grades in 2020 following Lockdown One. They had completed one full learning aim of Unit 1 and were given predicted grades for the exam unit.

Students then began the theory for Component 2, following a return to school after lockdown one. Students were given their task to complete however, the January lockdown in 2021, pushed the submission date into March. This has been shared with BTEC and approved as part of their moderation process report. Students finish completing this full unit May 2021.

Where students were isolating, they had work set via the school classcharts system, and lessons on theory took place during TEAMS sessions in Lockdown.

A01, AO3, AO4

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

The chosen assessments used were the November 2020 assessment material published by AQA as well as the 2021 assessment materials, which were kept secure by the exam board and were designed to assess the full breadth of the course and assessment objectives. The assessment objectives (A01 : listening / AO3: Reading / AO4: writing) were all assessed during students’ examinations. However, 2 sub-themes of theme 2 (social issues and global issues) were not assessed as they had not been studied. Questions based on these 2 sub-themes were therefore removed from the 2020 assessment materials. It is worth noting that as some vocabulary from the

28

global issue sub theme had been studied during live lessons during the national lockdown, some words from this sub-theme were therefore kept for the translation to English and the translation to the target language. Otherwise, all other themes had been studied during the course of their studies in school, and the key vocabulary and skills revised prior to each assessment.

The speaking endorsement was assessed in line with the JCQ requirements, using 2 tasks on 2 different themes (a photocard on theme 1 + general conversation on theme 3).

These materials, together with the 2019 examination series used for the mock examination in December 2020 (which were given a lesser weighting in the final grade), were assessed against the grade descriptors published by the JCQ, but were also compared to the grade boundaries set by AQA in 2020 and in 2019 as a proportion of the marks set in order to provide an additional check. These marks were moderated between three MFL teachers, and were then externally verified by a MFL department at another school (Ralph Thorsby).

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

Students are only been assessed on the areas of the course which they have been taught either in school or remotely. Assessment 1 was conducted as part of whole school timetabled PPEs in November/December 2020 and was based on the summer 2019 paper. All questions were based on topics students had been taught up to this date.

All subsequent assessments will be conducted in exam conditions during students timetabled Geography lessons. Assessments 2 – 4 are all questions taken from the November 2020 paper, again questions that students have not previously answered. It was determined that by using questions students had not previously seen, would provide strong robust evidence and support the awarding of accurate grades to students. To also support the accuracy of the grading system standardisation occurred prior to the marking of the cohort, followed up by internal and external moderation.

Component 2 – Health and social care services and values

Internal assessment N/A due to LD1 Exam board allocated grades in August 2020 based on evidence from component 1.

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

Students completed learning aim A of component 1 assessment prior to lockdown. This was assessed and internally moderated. This was used as evidence to award centre assessed grades for the remaining internal assessments students were unable to complete due to school closure and exam board regulations.

Component 1 has been externally moderated by the exam board this year with agreement from them on awarded grades.

The final component is an external exam normally taken in Feb 2021. Due to lockdown 2.0, and exam cancellation, students have had an extended period of time practicing the content and have sat 2 controlled assessments which will be used to award Q-TAGs. Students were notified in advance of this and exam concessions were awarded for those eligible.

Component 3 lessons/resources were made available on ClassCharts for any students self-isolating between Sept – Dec 2020 and students were all given a content handbook to support with learning.

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

Evidence has been collated from the units which have been taught within school, covering a broad range of content across all 3 papers and all 4 AO’s within the exam framework. We have continued to refrain from teaching the American West – Paper 2 section B – as there was the concession made by Edexcel exam board.

In November 2020, all students sat a Paper 1 assessment, in line with the school’s PPE timeline. Students will then have the opportunity to complete another Paper 1 assessment towards the end of their course, to help provide a holistic view of how students have progressed throughout the duration of the course. With assessments taking place in lesson which are a shorter time than the examination, this assessment has been split so students will have the opportunity to complete the full paper.

Section 4 of Paper 3 (Weimar and Nazi Germany 1918-39) was not fully completed in teaching therefore little assessment covered this section and required the adaptation of any past papers to create a hybrid paper for paper 3 to include only what the students had covered in school.

Paper 2 is due to be completed in May 2021 in a single lesson to add validity and authenticity to the in-class assessment. All assessments have been completed in high control conditions.

Independent coursework researched and written by the students.

June 2020 – April 2021 AO1, AO3

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

39

Evidence has been collated from the units which have been taught within school, covering a broad range of content across all 3 papers and their NEA, which covers all 3 AO’s within the exam framework.

In November 2020, all students sat a Paper 1 and Paper 2 PPE, in line with the school’s PPE timeline. Students have had the opportunity to sit further Paper 1 and Paper 2 assessments in the remainder of this academic year. With assessments taking place in lesson which are a shorter time than the examination, their assessments have been split so students will have the opportunity to complete the full paper.

Students have also completed an NEA throughout this year and have completed this independently, by researching and writing their responses to the questions they developed. This has been marked internally and moderated, this will be used to help support the formation of the students’ holistic grade.

Within Paper 3 students did not complete a breadth topic, but have had the opportunity to complete one of the two breadth topics. They will be completing assessments based on the studied breadth topic only and this will still enable them to demonstrate the relevant AO’s. They have sat assessments throughout this period which will assess the full coverage of the paper.

However, 1350/2A Q2, Q5 and Q7 were not included as the content had been assessed in other assessment questions, 1350/2A Q3 was not included as confidence intervals had not been studied, and 1350/2A Q6e&f were not included as the content was not taught in enough depth for students to have gained a true understanding of the topic.

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

Chosen assessments used Edexcel October 2020 assessment materials which are secure and assess the full breadth of the course and assessment objectives. The use of Edexcel papers in full from last year’s exam series provided validity and robustness on the content taught; these papers were split into shorter assessments which were each completed in normal lesson times. Consideration was given to content learned during the summer lockdown (parts of Mechanics and Statistics); this was included in the assessments because students performed well in these areas in the November PPE (a full set of Edexcel AS Papers) and this content was prerequisite to the successful learning which took place in subsequent live lessons, hence it was reinforced and extended in these lessons.

All assessments were completed under high control conditions.

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

Six assessments of 40 minutes duration were required to ensure a broad range of knowledge was assessed spanning the full duration of each student’s GCSE Maths course.

Topics taught solely during the lockdown periods were not included as we believed this would not provide a true representation of each student’s mathematical ability.

All assessments where designed to represent the current GCSE distribution of questions for the Foundation tier, i.e.: 50% AO1; 25% AO2; 25% AO3 questions.

All questions used in the assessments were sourced directly from the exam board (Edexcel) from a range of past papers and including the new material supplied in 2021.

Topics covered in the assessments were re-taught during lessons and intervention periods before assessments were sat to ensure all students had the same level of preparation before sitting the assessments and additional support was provided on our online learning platform (Hegarty Maths) were students had relevant topic videos and quizzes assigned before each assessment.

All assessments were completed under high control conditions.

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

The chosen assessments used, where possible the November 2020 exam papers which are secure from public access and unseen by the students. Unit 1-5 were assessed using the full November 2020 AS papers which cover all the material studied in year 12 across two 90 minute papers. This ensured that the questions used had not been seen before by students during the teaching of or assessment of the content covered therein.

Unit 6 to 8 have been assesses using the appropriate questions from the November 2020 Paper 1 (6.1- periodic motion) and Paper 2 (6.2 Thermal physics, 7 Fields and 8 Nuclear Physics). To more fully assess these areas, which have been significantly impacted by COVID restrictions, additional

51

questions from previous years exam papers were added. These have been carefully selected to avoid those used in previous assessments or routinely as models and exemplars during teaching.

Brief rationale for using these assessments:

53

The qualification is not run any differently to normal, we have completed the projects, portfolios have been submitted and marking will be completed by the project supervisor in the same way it would in a normal year. The only change to the assessment is that there is no nationalised sampling in the same way as ‘normal’.

All chosen assessments used AQA published assessment materials from the years 2017-2020, most of this material was available on the AQA public website which students could access but they were not directed to prepare any specific questions. We used a replacement mock exam purchased from Tutor2U, and appropriate for AQA Psychology, for the Research Method assessment 2 as this gave students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a novel, unseen context. Overall, the material used assessed the full breadth of the course taught, the three assessment objectives and the research methods element of the course which is considered essential to assessing breath. Question styles represented the true nature of A Level Psychology questions, consisting of a range of MCQs, short answers and extended writing opportunities in the form of short and extended essays. Whilst we aimed for assessment breath, some Paper 2 topics (issues and debates and aggression) were not included as we had not taught these topics in sufficient depth for assessment to be deemed appropriate and/or fair.

The assessment conducted provided validity and robustness on the content taught, most of which was taught in school or as live lessons during the national lockdowns. All assessments were done under high control conditions and students who are entitled to exam concessions had these facilitated in all instances.

57

global issue sub theme had been studied during live lessons during the national lockdown, some words from this sub-theme were therefore kept for the translation to English and the translation to the target language.

These materials, together with the 2019 examination series used for the mock examination in December 2020 (which were given a lesser weighting in the final grade), were assessed against the grade descriptors published by the JCQ but were also compared to the grade boundaries set by AQA in 2020 and in 2019 as a proportion of the marks set in order to provide an additional check. These marks were moderated between three MFL teachers and were then externally verified by a MFL department at another school (Ralph Thorsby).
